| Black Cat is the kind of anime that one would wish they'd stopped it sooner than when it finished. The first few episodes show such promise but then we're introduced to other characters and two other story arcs that seem unnecessary to rest of the story. While the animation can be a bit lazy at times and the music can be enjoyable. In the end, Black Cat is just your average bounty-hunter themed anime. Outlaw Star and Cowboy Bebop did it better and first.

| I was reading the reviews off this site and I almost never watched this show...which I guess only goes to show that not matter what people say or how many people say it, it's really up to the individual and that person's preferences. Needless to say my review will probably be taken as a dissenting opinion from the majority who have given this show a medium to low score. Black Cat is not a bad show and it's not really a disappointing show either....only to those who selected this series with the expectation of finding the next Holy Grail of an anime, i.e., Cowboy Bebop or Trigun.
If you decide to pick this series to watch, then judge it on it's own merit and you will enjoy it a lot better. There's a nice mixture of funny and sad moments [expect some characters being killed off], there is some dramatic tension and a decent climax. Again, to me this was not such a horrendous story and I don't see where the big disappointment is. So I guess it would be best to say that this is the type of show you are going to have to watch and then formulate your own opinions about it.

| Chronos is an organization determined to maintain world order. The one maintaining that order is an eraser called Black Cat. Whoever they deem as a threat to the world, Black Cat will be there to exterminate them. This was his way of living, until he encountered two people; Eve and Sven. Their destinies were intertwined when a mission was sent in by Chronos to Black Cat to destroy Eve; a bio weapon whose powers may even rival Black Cat's. The three become a trio of sweepers living a struggle to find huge bounties to pay off their myriad of tabs and debts. However, because of Black Cat's resignation as an eraser, the balance of powers started to shift as his former partner Creed Diskenth formed the Apostles of the Stars destined for world conquest. Black Cat's former group, the Numbers, get involved too.
The first couple of episodes are a bit confusing. The story telling is structured in a weird but unique way. It's as if it's expecting you to know what is already going on. Despite that, the introduction was still bearable to watch and does accomplish what it's meant to do; establish the setting, characters, and the roles of those characters. From that point on Black Cat just keeps on getting better with great fights and an even better musical score of some of the best battle music you'll ever hear.
There are basically only two things wrong with this anime. It's short for a shounen, and to make it worse, there are some rather unnecessary fillers in the way. It's so blatantly obvious what is filler and what is not. There's even an episode dedicated to a mysterious woman living in the mountains that may even have a show of its own. Later on when you think back to why these fillers even exist, you just shake your head and wonder how much better Black Cat could have been, and I'm fully aware of the whole "catching up to manga" phase. The fillers could have at least been better.
I'm really confident that if Black Cat was an 80 episode anime, it could rival the current big three shounens of today; One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach. This is truly one of GONZO's better works, and it unfortunately ended sooner than it should have. There are many unanswered questions that could have materialized into great and juicy story arcs.
Fortunately, with what we were given, it's fully worth investing your time into. The story isn't really anything deep, and it may even have borrowed some things from other animes (cough End of Evangelion cough). However, like mentioned before, the story structuring in Black Cat is really unique and offers a fresh new way of story telling. Sometimes when it's in the middle of a heated battle, it'll show glimpses of the aftermath, when the battle is resolved. There are other methods Black Cat uses to tell its story, but to tell it would be spoiling its riches.
Best of all, the productions are just astonishing. GONZO has a history of creating great productions that aren't congruent to the feel of the anime. Finally it scores big time with Black Cat. You'll never hear better battle music that compliments a fight so well than in Black Cat, and what's even better is that there are a handful of battle themes instead of one. The battles are also filled with great dynamics that will most definitely please your eyes.
I was wary of Black Cat at first because it was based off of a manga (I've tried to stay away from these because I'll eventually run into the inevitable filler), and because it was produced by GONZO, but while the former one came true, the latter was made up for it and really proved me wrong. The unique blend of story telling, characters, and productions, make this a great anime watch. Take away it's two biggest flaws of length and fillers, and you have a shounen anime that is up there with One Piece, Naruto, and Bleach.

| Black Cat is a very interesting anime. It starts off pretty good, but then however the story just completely change. It takes awhile for the story to kick in.
Each character has their own unique fighting abilities which makes the battles interesting at least. Well there's a lot of action in Black Cat so that's one good pointer.
Well there are many disappointing factors of Black Cat. We got Train or aka Black Cat whose a member of Chronos. Yeah I'm an assassin for 3 episodes. Now I'm a free stray cat hurray. I can learn how to talk and have emotion all of a sudden. Hey at least he's got a cool gun made of orichalcum. Well mostly i see Train becoming so weird from talking and being emotional is because he kept hiding from himself from the truth. And that girl made him realize the outside world. However she dies and gets mad at Creed for killing her. So after he leaves Chronos, he becomes Black Cat the stray cat that wanders. What's next is from assassination he becomes a sweeper.
Everything was good from beginning to where they get eve and Trains precious or first/best friend dies. Here we get the idea of Tao. A powerful drink that makes you powerful. Except you can die from it if you're not worthy. Here i suppose this where the story starts. During these events we get good fighting scenes. That's what kept me entertained the most. And some comedy areas as well. However what was bad was the transition. The series was good until it got towards the ending. Last 3-4 episodes. I mean what the heck? I was like um what just happened? How did it get from here to all the over there. So transition not good.
Hey the OP music was neatly done. It's been a while since i heard and saw a good opening. Great combination of music and animation. Voice actors now. Solid nice work with the characters. However what's weird is we got dark Train and now light Train. That was pretty bad transition.
Now i can say this could or should have been a 52 episode. Why i say this? Because it can help develop and tell the story more clearly. I mean the ending was kind of a cliff hanger. Well last episode the fighting was a big question to me. It was just a terrible ending.

| This is an alright anime. It just lacks a good grip for most viewers to actually enjoy the anime. There's too much fillers, and lost its track on the main story of the anime.

| This is the most boring anime goonzu has ever produced. It is only action based and by 10 eps the plot is still not clear. Not only that, the action scenes are not really that good.

| In a world of assassins and bounties, a world of an imprecise timeline where the old meets the new and where gigantic organizations control the fates of all, secrets are left to be unfold as the world is recreated for us, the viewers. Believable it may not be, but interesting it most certainly is…as long as you don’t take into consideration one small, yet important detail:
This is a Gonzo anime...
Not wanting to sound like I never gave this anime a fighting chance, I actually sat down to watch it with great hopes in mind and even the idea that this may be that second Gonzo masterpiece, alongside Last Exile, since the anime had been recommended to me. And for the first few episodes…it was good, I was pleased with what I was seeing.
The world of the anime is a wonderful joining between old fighting techniques and rituals and modern industry and technologies. I admit I always had an affinity for such worlds and this came up my alley quite nicely.
And thus, I gained hope for the anime, especially since the characters were so fine at the beginning (not original I assure you, but they were great). But all good things come to an early end, especially when we talk about this WONDERFUL studio named Gonzo. What seemed at the beginning to be a reinvention of the studio’s tried and, more often than not, missed formula managed to be nothing more than a shining example of that decaying formula. Nothing that was to be interesting managed to survive, nothing that was good about the characters remained, not even the production values weren’t even as high as I usually expect from these people…the anime is a cliché action series with little substance...unexpected, no?

| A typical sloppy manga to anime conversion that could've done with more episodes or a better use of time. We have like, several dozen totally awesome fighters each with their own unique style and moves, most of which we see fighting for just a few seconds, and even the fights of the main character, Train himself, don't make much sense.
The series sort of makes up for it by having some seriously cool characters (yay! Sven!) some very nifty music (although Iwasaki Taku can do a lot better than this; see Getbackers and Witch Hunter Robin for that) and a very cool (if feeling somewhat rushed) final few episodes.
I still think a massive action series with the amount of characters of Black Cat simply NEEDS more episodes to really fleshen the fights out though.

| Normally, I would throw out anime that showed a human jumping 3 storeys high aside. But, Black Cat's inhuman physics actually made the series fun to watch.
I've enjoyed this anime, but, not really for its consistency character development. I favour it more for some of the moments they display.
Its too bad some of the transitions are not well linked in it. It becomes a case of you using your imagination (to convince yourself). Certain things are not explained too. So yeah, use your imagination again.
I would have preferred them to include more episodes to make some of the transitions smoother but that might be at the expense of many fluffs.

| Based on the first 13 episodes:
Black Cat was quite promising at first - very entertaining supernatural action scenes that were very flashy and energetic. Furthermore, the story and the characters didn't seem too shabby. Although not much had been introduced about future conflicts, I found each character to be somewhat interesting as their fates entwined around each other. How would they meet? How would they get together? I couldn't wait to find out.
But too bad I never did - right after the characters all got together, it instantly went on a huge gap to "6 months later" where they're all buddy buddy and Train has a completely altered personality with absolutely NO explanation. Furthermore, I got tired of Sven's personality. At first, he really seemed to change the environment around him - with his nice guy stuff - but soon he just became some comedy figurehead where his actions made absolutely no real dent of the situation around them. No, this was all left to Mr. 'I always leave randomly' Train/Black Cat and a very cute but quite useless Eve.
The story also took a huge nose dive after all the characters got together in this Sweeping/Bounty hunting business. I don't really care that it wasn't much about Chronos or the whole underground mafia controlling 1/3 of the world's resources. But at least make it interesting. Have some interesting character dramas or some cool storyline. Nope. Instead, we have these characters wandering aimlessly trying to make money for their next meal , meeting lots of new people (who also do random things with our main characters - fire breathing school girl, anyone?) who put our main characters even MORE into the background.
Really, after 13 episodes, I could tell this anime was not going to go anywhere. Even if it did, Train's behavior is just that of some angsty teenager kid who suddenly one day woke up and found out that he could talk and express emotions. Too bad he hasn't been doing that all his life and he ends up being some sort of random ass character whose behavior is random and too convenient (for the storyline).
Whatever Black Cat tried to do, it failed at doing it. The great action scenes and character potential in the beginning soon waned as its horrible HORRIBLE storyline took some huge turn for the worse. It is safe to say that this anime is not for those who want something substantial in their watching. Want a nonsense story and unrealistic/inconsistent characters? Black Cat will open the gates of pain for you...

| Black Cat is terrible in nearly every aspect. From atrocious animation, to non-sensical story elements, Black Cat is one continuous crime against artistic merit. The only redeeming quality is that the main characters are likable and the comedic moments might put a smile on your face.
And yes I gave the animation a 1. I think it's well deserved. The grading criteria for animation should NOT be coolness or reputation of producers. It SHOULD BE FLUIDITY, ARTWORK, and APPROPRIATENESS.

| Black Cat is somewhat strange, it tries to do a mix of several situations from other animes in one show but it fails to impress with what it tries to acheive.
Case in point, the show is a mixture of Getbackers, Cowboy Bebop and Trigun. What with the unique powers of different characters, the 2-buddy cop system, and the 'i dont want to kill attitude because a girl convinced me' kind of character that train shows. From this, Black Cat still manages to create a show for itself despite being 'copy cat' on other action shows. From this, i mean the villain, Creed, who just oozes of badass evilness , one whcih i havent seen before since i watched Shaman King last year, aside from being somewhat truly evil (til the very end), he is also gay for Train, which makes the show even more entertaining as the show goes onto a somewhat wacky trip on making Creed and Train love each other... sort of.. :P
Anyways, connected the characters, the main characters like Train and Sven are almost too generic to take into consideration, Eve on the other hand is a beauty with a nice nanotech ability which makes her a killer weapon and shows great usage in her battle against Leon, who is part of a super band of special-move elitists.. and with this group, in comes failure, their unique abilities aren't superb or totally unique but at leats fun to watch and a few of the characters are suppose to have developed backgrounds (Leon, Echidna, Charden etc) but were never given any.
I guess far too many characters and nto enough episodes, with only 23 episodes, this show is very fast-paced.. and when i meant fast.. i mean really fast. At the last twist towards the end, the anime had only 2 episodes to tie it all together, comapred with say the many episodes required for the main story of the anime. Not enough budget? Maybe, but the point still stands. The aniem moves at tremendous pace, which kind of suits the character abit but totally leaves the viewer wanting more and expecting alot more... especially with 23 episodes.
Overall, Black Cat is a good show which happens to fail because of its length, far too many characters and bad story direction.

| Black Cat is a very underrated anime, in my opinion. I watched it very pleasantly myself and I found it brilliant. I didn't get bored for even a second and I loved every little bit of it.
First of all, Black Cat is mostly an action series. It's also very fun sometimes, breaking the ice of the 'dramatic' part of the series. I think that Black Cat majesticly succeeds in this part.
The story is not the most original you've ever seen, but it's fair enough, I'd say. It spins off an once cold killer guy with the nickname Black Cat that finds out that the world he was living in was a locked cell. He didn't have command over himself and he was a mere puppet. So some day he quits and wants to start his own live the way he wants to. And that's just the beginning.
The action of Black Cat is very well put and I find it great. I would not call myself an action series fan, but Black Cat is something more than the usual. I don't agree that it is cliche or anything.
I should also mention that the animation is top class. I personally think that the animation and character design is something more than a section someone can judge with his personal opinion. It's good or it's bad. You can like some style more or less, but that has little effect on the outcome mark. And I say that comparing Black Cat's average animation mark compared to other totally overrated anime at least on the animationa and character design field.
Anyway,
The characters are all great in their own way and their design is very very pleasant, I love it.
Concluding, Black Cat is a very entertaining series that will surely get you. Watch for yourself. If you're an action fan, you're gonna love it.

| The Black Cat anime made a fatal mistake, and that was to stray from the focus on Chronos. Chronos is like the backbone of the setting of the world in Black Cat, because it is this 'syndicate' that shapes the characters and their roles. And more importantly, Chronos is cool, along with an interesting bunch of assassins called Chrono Numbers at their beck and call. However, the anime chose to set the scene for a storyline with great potential and then completely abandoned it in favor of something shockingly crude.
The rest of Black Cat was too loosely focussed on the 'rivalry' between Train and Creed (as well as the Taoshi powers), however, this story was not very engaging because it was underdeveloped. All we learn is that Creed admires Train (to a point of insanity) and wants him to help accomplish his evil goals, yet the motivations that drive Creed so insane are unknown.
Creed just turned out to be a ridiculously lousy villain (pathetically mental and annoying) who was just used for some fanservice scenes that were an attack to my senses. Too many characters are annoying and 'hateable' and sometimes even stupid. For example, Creed's allies are stupid for following him even though they KNOW he thinks they're just dirt, and Eve is very annoying for always just bringing everyone so much trouble and always getting herself kidnapped, for heaven's sake!
When the Creed saga was over, the story felt so incomplete and then suddenly these new villains pop out of nowhere and dominate the last four episodes or so with their 'evil scheme'. The inconsistency in the storyline is fatally blatant, and the only consistent thing seems to be the fact that visions of Saya keep recurring.
The characters in Black Cat were a mixed bunch, because some were cool and impressive while some left no impression and others were just...hateable. I liked the loyal Chrono Numbers because as a group they give off an unstoppable and powerful aura of professional mastery. On the other hand, those Apostles of the Stars seemed so disorganized and chaotic and the Eden Project villains had such a stupid, stupid plan (you don't even understand why they would even WANT to do something so stupid in the first place). The storyline gets progressively weaker and eventually the events start seeming forced. You start realizing that the bad guys are getting out of hand and just keep on getting more severely insane.
Being an anime of 2005, some of the only things I liked about Black Cat except for the loyal Chrono Numbers would be the good animation and some good songs. The storyline was really disappointing and disjointed. I wish I just stuck to the first few episodes.

| It started out good, but ended the other way around. The manga was amazing but the anime is a bit of a dissapointment. Since i have already read most of the manga, im trying not to be comparing the both in this review. The animation for this anime is average, nothing special, although i think they could have improve it a bit. The only good thing i found is the sound and the characters(even though i found a few changes in the anime, the only thing i couldnt stand is how weak No.I seems to be in the anime, but the others was fine). The story was quite good at the first few episodes, but then the end was horrible. The ending seemed to be rushed. The OP and the ED matches the anime, it was really well done.
I wouldnt recommend this to someone who is looking for a good/indepth storyline. It has decent actions and thats about it. Even if you are a fan of black cat, you might become disappointed after watching this.

| When I started writing reviews, I promised myself that I wouldn’t judge a series by comparing it to another series/manga/novel. With this in mind, I vowed not to read the manga until I’d finish the anime because I knew it would influence my opinion. It didn’t work out the way I’d planned. Even though I haven’t touched the manga, everyone had already told me how the anime couldn’t even come close to it.
If Black Cat had been an awesome anime, then it wouldn’t have mattered because I would have just applauded their efforts. Similarly, if it had been an awful anime, I could’ve just written it off and put it in my reject pile. The problem is that Black Cat falls into the average category. I liked the characters’ backgrounds but I didn’t like how they were developed. I liked the premise of the plot but I didn't like how it played out. Basically, I liked the idea of it all, but the execution left a lot to be desired. If that’s the case, the credit for this should go the manga because I’d assume that that’s where they got the ideas from.

| *sigh.... i'm sorry if i'm going to offend anyone, but i'm going to be honest about my opinion:
i have the say that the Black Cat animation was a BIG let down.....but then again, if i haven't read the manga beforehand then i wouldn't have bother watching black cat at all....
Compared to the manga, the overall plot just crashed before it even lift off!! throughout the whole thing i just kept slapping my forehead (until it was red) and going WTF!?!?!
since the animation was by Gonzo, as usual they did a great job, but there is just SOME parts i can't tolerate. eg, the beginning when Eve was injected with that liquid....then she turned YuGiOh (physically) on me. OMFG!!!! then the damage is done and the following eps i had her YGO face in mind when ever she appeared....its a nightmare! (Kyouko, Greed, Train....-_-')
the plot....the plot...*sob
ah....*i mourn for you.....
compared to the manga.......lets just say after watching this I brain washed myself by re-reading my Black Cat manga.....
Overall, I'm so critical of Black Cat anime was because i've read the manga before hand...i guess its a good anime for those who haven't read it, though i would recommend you to read it afterwards just to compare the feel of the story. and just for the record, i would give the manga 10 out of 10 for everything!

| Summary: starts good, wobbles, crashes.
There's a whole lot of good things in Black Cat. I liked the characters for example. Train introduces himself as a nice brooding assassin who meets a nice girl. Very good chemistry between them and I was eagarly expecting where things would lead to. You also got a lovely gothiloli with snappy comments and generally a very huggable appearance. Got a worried father figure. Got a cute girl. Got tons of different enemies with various skills and some even with a back story to flesh them out. Got a maniac of grand scale. All of them work together so damn well. But the story...
The huge potential is wasted with badly disjointed story that never flows properly. The three main segments are Saya arc, Creed arc and Eve arc. As ideas they are all very good and connected logically. Unfortunately logic isn't enough. There's a big black box between the first two and last segment came out like from behind a tree. I can see the cause and the effect but the how is either lacking or too sudden to feel comfortable. The best part is the first where the characters are introduced and Train is seriously developed. The middle suffers from filler episodes and some characters that feel too extra. This part is all about revenge and desire and I had hard time to concentrate on their everyday life. It would've been better to shorten this part and add episodes to the last that suddenly introduces a new enemy and takes up plot that was abandoned a long time ago. After the rather climatic middle part I couldn't bother yet another dramatic event even if it featured a huggable gothiloli. More or less the feeling that I received was that the producers had to do something with the last episodes and hacked something together.
Animation doesn't help the incoherent story. It's flashy alright but too much is too much. Sometimes I couldn't follow what was happening because there was some fancy effect that made everything look like a mental patient's daydream. Sometimes it worked but mostly I hoped for a bit orthodox style. BGM is appropriate for the sudden mood swings the series has from action to comedy to brooding. The opening song is very catchy piece but I didn't like the ending songs much.
Because of my oversized ranting over the story, Black Cat may sound a worse series it actually is. The first segment good and the second one has some nice episodes too. The fights are impressive when the animation doesn't get in the way. The series sometimes has an air of incredible coolness around it. The problem is that never I felt that the series knew where it was going with all the plot twists and fillers. Average fun for one-time viewing pleasure.
