I have never liked light sodas. I like sugar. It tastes better. It isn't artificial. I don't like Petopeto-san either. It's artificial. Like a light version of Kamichu.

Like Kamichu, the appeal of Petopeto-san depends how adorable you find the characters and the surroundings. Otherwise it's a quite weak slice-of-life romance story. There's no spark between the main characters Petoko and Shingo and following through their school life started to feel pretty boring after a couple episodes. For entertainment the series counts on "monster" concept to make things fun. Monsters are humanlike creatures with strange powers. Petoko is one and her powers include occasionally getting glued to people who touch her. Other monsters include people with kappa properties, shapeshifting abilities or just having no face. They're moderately fun, especially the shapeshifter with her little sister, but mostly they don't take the full potential of the comedy possibilities and people just converse as usual. The sharpest characters are the kappa sisters but what comes to their family troubles I was just baffled at their reasons and how the argument was finally resolved. The series also takes a few attempts to comment on discrimination and rasism, but I felt these attempts were quite weak and didn't bring any substance to the series.

Getting back to Kamichu comparison, its best part was the beautifully animated fantasy world. Petopeto-san is much weaker on this side and the animation quality is rather unimpressive. I didn't like the character designs much. They were nice and roundish and potentially cute but ultimately bland. The sound wasn't impressive either and I found the opening and ending mostly annoying. Voice acting was better since some of the actors had a nice accent to their speak.

Well, I didn't have much to say about this. Basically after seeing Kamichu, Petopeto-san felt a really dull and unimaginitive way of telling a similar story. This is due to lower production values and bland characters. I'm not saying you can't enjoy it but for me it was something that's only strength could have been cuteness but failed in that too.

Notes: I disagree about remarks of this being "harem" or "ecchi". There are maybe two scenes that can be considered ecchi, there are approx. the same number of guys as girls, and only two of them like the main character. Continue... :)

A simple anime that revolves around the concept of monsters, or to be "politically correct", specified-races and how they coexist with humans in a school environment. The main character is Shingo, a guy who gets a first-hand experience with the new student, Fujimura Hatoko (nicknamed Petoko), a Petopeto monster.

What is a petopeto monster? They're supposedly an "ero-ero-monster" who stalk humans and stick to them in order to trap them and the rest can be imagined to be ero-ero. The thing is that Petoko has no way of controlling it, and all she can do is blame herself when it happens as in the case of the show's first incident. Not only that, but the only way to get unstuck is to fall asleep.

While this may make it seem like the point of the show is to be ecchi, it really isn't. That first incident might be considered a bit ecchi, but overall, the show is really quite innocent and enjoyable.

On the surface, Petopeto-san seems like your harmless loli cutesy harem anime. All the girls are in middle school, and this anime makes this huge emphasis on 'Younger Sisters' from the fact that there is a 'Young Sister' contest to how the town that they live in - every household has a younger sister. But then, something interesting comes in - not everyone is human. For some reason, some of the girls have special (unique/odd) abilities that seem to make no good use. As a result of these demon bloodlines, some of the girls get discriminated against by the humans and thus begins our journey as one normal boy and a bunch of girls try to make their place in the world.

To make a long story short, Petopeto-san's only noteworthy aspect is the freshness of its characters and some comedy (about one funny event every two episodes). Because these demon girls have really odd powers, we end up having pretty humorous situations. My favorite being the girl who is a wall and communicates by having her forehead imprint words. The characters are pretty cute b/c they're in middle school and the designs aren't too bad. A bit simplistic but gets the job done.

However, when one looks at the story - one can't help but to feel disappointment. On paper, it is about how a young girl who has experience numerous hardships and discriminations in her past manages to become part of normal society with the help of bunch of her friends. She is a bright and cheery girl, but her family is poor and humans hate demons. However, she goes to school, makes friends with various people, and ends up having some sort of job. Sounds interesting right? It is, but the focus is mostly on the harem and the 'fun' make friends part - which is fun only half the time. So by the end, we get thrown this quick wrap up and things end. Yay.

Overall, this is probably favorable for those who like young girl characters. Maybe appealing for those who like Ichigo Mashimaro and harems mixed together. There are some pretty funny scenes every so often, but everything else is just so cheesy. Due to the lack of any brilliance, in the end, Petopeto-san is just not worth it. Another run of the mill anime series reliant on imouto-complexes and such.

Petopeto-san... a short and quirky 13 episode series about the racial divide that`s prevalent in a society with youkai (monsters) and ningen (humans). Think Kamichu! without the god, but with the same age of the characters dealing with everyday problems.

Animation: The budget for this anime wasn`t very high, and it shows. Some panning here and there, and low framerates of some of the scenes make me dock 2 points off. It`s not BAD, per se, but the animation could`ve been done a lot better. Episode 10-11 suffered a lapse in character design consistency, as all their faces look distorted. Great backgrounds though, and the last episode brought the animation up a notch.

Sound: Brilliant opening/ending combo. When I first heard the opening, it sounded very hoary, but it gradually sticks on to you. The ending song is a peaceful ballad sung by the same singer as the opening, and fits the theme well. Sprinkled background music throughout, and a great use of enka (old style music) to convey a feeling of poverty for the Fujimura family. All in all, music added to the experience, and didn`t distract from it.

Story: A great start with a slice of life opening and a brief explanation of the world Shingo and Petoko lives in. The first episode might seem ecchi, but it`s actually a very innocent show. The Little Sister Heaven ruined the story though, since it brought the anime off focus and into the bizarre. Satisfying ending that gives to open interpretation and goes back to the story`s monster racism roots.

Character: The characters made this show. From the monsters Petoko, Jeremy, Sekiya, Kugugu and Chochomaru, along with the humans Shingo, Yuri-sensei, Petoko`s father, all of them were very memorable. YUG`s character designs shine here, and they`re all drawn very distinctively. Petoko is a ero-ero monster, and Kuguru and her sister are Kappas. Sekiya is an undead samurai, and Jeremy is a faceless monster. A bizarre cast, but one that meshes very well.

Value/Enjoyment: Petopeto-san is a good short anime series which caters to the moe crowd. (Note the awesomely cute designs of the concrete sisters, Konuri and Nuci-chan). There`s also a little romance sprinkled in, so fans of that genre will find what they like here. I also enjoyed this anime tremendously, having fansubbed its entirety.

BASED on all the eps (1-13), which previous probably didn't see all if they watched it through fan-subs as i did since 13 was released late june '06

good shoujo but a bit perverted at times which messed up the atmosphere I thought it was aimed toward the young audience but maybe not.

Definitely something fresh if you're sick of those generic harems or ecchis or whatever

Great visualizations and concepts by Kimura Ko. The animation style is very good. There are many detail character designs of different "specified races" they range from the eroero to the kappa.

Shingo is like a Charlie Brown of anime but this Charlie Brown gets all the attention of the girls at the school, he doesn't really want that attention it's just in his nature and when he tries to help, he tends to get sucked up into the problem with "specified races" abilities.

Like I said Kimura Ko has a uncanny vision, it uses elements from other inspirations of course but the bottom line is it becomes it's own vision because of Ko.

Now the the soundtrack is just fitting for this series, it's comedy, fantasy and school kids so it reminds me of the good aspects of Gakuen Alice but without the classifications of that series.

Finally, why should you watch? Because Petoko will stick to you and you'll be wondering out loud, "Now why am I watching this? But it's interesting so who cares, right?" This season aside from One Piece, Naruto, Monster, Bleach, FMP:SR and Konjiki no Gash Bell does not have a strong Shounen lineup in it. You could argue and say Trinity Blood (Trigun + Cowboy Bebop mix) is interesing or that Eyeshield 21 just because in North America it's football season, is interesting but not against OP, Naru, Monster, FMP:SR and Bleach.
This season is a Shoujo season. Luckily for me I'm a fan of both.
