| This is a rather disappointing title. Animation is fairly low quality per se (given what Gonzo has done elsewhere), and it's made really awful because of too many cheap 3D effects and lousy character design.
The music, save for the main title, is fairly boring and of relatively low quality (think of mid-80's synth music).
Scenario is weak for the most part. Though funny during the first couple episodes, it gets quickly boring because it's so predictable and self-repeating, save for the end of the series. Characters' personalities are somewhat funny and entertaining, but some of them are really boring, even more because of the weakness of the scenario. In the end, the only worthy episodes are probably the last 5 ones, in which the whole story actually happens.
To sum it up, this series should probably have been a 13-eps instead of a 24-eps one. But even then, it would probably have been average. Definitely not one of those I'd like to watch twice or more.
I've seen *much* better stuff coming from Gonzo. This compares to eg. Vandread (and Vandread is already better), but has absolutely nothing in common quality-wise with eg Samurai 7, Hellsing or Bakuretsu Tenshi...

| Another gem made by Gonzo Studio.
This show features some of the coolest animation I've seen in a while. All the special effects, fights, motion and even water reflection is just so clisp and clear. The character designs are superb, like always, from the Gonzo Studio.
The music was cool as well. Gatekeepers doesn't suffer from anything in the technical department.
The only downside was the story. The story had a lot of potential but a lot of stuff was unexplained in the end. However, I do give them credit for being more than just a typical kid's show. The drama and the revealed truth near the end will have you at the edge of your seat...if you could make it that far. The enjoyment of the story will really depend on the people's tastes, since this show does seem childish in some ways. The dialogue could've been better, but its simplicity was aimed at younger audience after all.
The characters really made this show good. Although they felt like cardboard cut out characters, they do suit this type of show. If your expectations aren't that high, they really make the show fun. A lot of humor ensue from their interaction, especially when the girls are fighting over the main male lead later on.
Nice rewatch value, good for once in a while viewing. Recommended.

| Very good character designs and art direction, and better-than-average animation overall, make what could have been a thoroughly mediocre show a lot of fun to watch.
The love story aspect of the plot--the oblivious, crude but effective boy, and repressed overachiever girl (his childhood friend, naturally) who ostensibly hates him--is deeply formulaic, and obvious enough to be seen from space. By mid-season, when this tired old setup becomes a quasi-harem, the formula becomes all the more blatant and garish. But if you like that sort of thing, particularly when it's just a bit of window dressing on a pretty good action-adventure show, it's far from offensive.
The Invaders our heroes must battle are probably the coolest part of the show -- the fusion sequences in particular are visually creative and really fun to watch. The late-60s art direction is also a treat, although the ridiculous hi-tech anachronisms were a little much.
Overall, not worth buying, but certainly worth watching.

| I dont think I'll ever forget the animations drawn when the characters opened up their gates (the stuff with their eye). The animation style is quite eye-catching.
I started to watch this awhile ago, and I never managed to finish it up. Two things about this. 1) I'm not bothered about not watching it because it is not THAT addictive 2) I remember that it was very enjoyable to watch.
This was one of my first anime and I thought how it was so cool to have a super power that made you charge up like that.
The characters are quite neutral in terms of personality. He doesn't seem quite human in terms of emotions but he has all the usual power up feelings that many animes contain. However, there is nothing annoying about him. The story too is quite neutral. It takes a middle pathway which can't be too disappointing yet can never be interesting and intriguing enough.
If you look at this anime as one of those entertainment only types, I think it does a good job. The focus point is on saving the world. The mechanism of achieving this is through two characters who have relatively unexplainable, unrealistic, and excessive powers. One of those blow them up animes which I probably wouldn't like now due to my tastes for more mature plots, but used to like when I was younger.

| It's an overall average story. I wasn't in awe at it or anything. I mean, don't get me wrong, it's best described as "decent". The animation and sound is good, as expected from a Gonzo anime. Then OP is really catchy...although sounds a bit bad when they make an attempt at singing in English with a horrible Japanese accent. I wasn't too impressed with the story...however, if you're planning on watching "Gatekeepers 21" (which is ALOT better), you should watch this one first since it'll make you go, "oh cool" if you've already seen this and recognize the things that they bring over to the sequel.

| I would normally try to advoid shows like where people with special powers goes on to save the world and such but I quite enjoyed watching Gatekeepers. It isn't a show that I would watch over and over again but the animation was decent and the character design wasn't bad(besides for the large, round eyes which I quickly got used to). Although I couldn't find some of the characters to my like, it was nice that they all had different personalities that every show needs. The sound wasn't any good but it wasn't bad either. It was just there and nothing more. Perhaps I might save few episodes to rewatch from few years from now for small entertainment but I can't find anything more from this series.

| At first you make think that Gatekeepers is just one of your typical romance, schoolkids, comedy, and save-the-world anime. But hey, think again. Gatekeepers revolves around the lives of the schoolboys and girls who have the ability to open a dimension or gate. This then serves as a powerful weapon against the growing population of the "invaders". Ikusawa Ruriko, the first gatekeeper discovered, and Ukiya Shun, who was at first unaware of his powers and soon became captain, are two important characters in the said series. These two people both share a secret mutual feeling for each other though they try to deny it. It was just in their final test that they unconsciously showed their feelings. The anime, if you look deeper into it, actually tells us that if we love somebody, we must fight for him/her. Just as the Gatekeepers loved the Earth, and just as Shun loves Ruriko, he would fight everything just to protect her. On the later part of the series, you will find touching scenes and dialogues. What they are, it's for you to find out.

| The animation was nice. The sound was unmemorable. The story was your typical hero must save the world. No real twists or anything. The characters for the most part are kind of flat. They all have a tragic past which should at least give them some depth but they really don't seem to. I did not really enjoy this anime and would not recommend it. It was a bit too kiddish for me and it annoyed me the way everyone was in love with the main hero like he was the only guy in the world. I really do not like harem style anime but if you are into that you might like this. Love Hina wasn't bad but the guy in that was much more likable. Ukiya is really annoying and so is Rumiko.

| The absolute best part of Gatekeepers is the relationships. The characterization is very rich and you wonder under the very end who will end up with whom!
Animation was wonderful until somewhere in the middle where it seemed a different team was running the show. For the last six episodes the animation returns to the level that it was at the start but it's still enough of a skip to bring the animation grade down a notch.
With the mix of action and relationships Gatekeepers has something for everyone. Definetly a worth see!

| When I first started watching Gatekeepers, I was quite disapointed. Each episode was quite repetitive, it went 1) find a new gatekeeper each episode 2) The previous gatekeepers didn't have the ability to destroy the current enemy 3) the new gatekeeper would be the only one who could destroy the new enemy and they would kick the shit of the enemy and everyone would be happy. Yeah... that didn't quite cut it for me. As the series went on, I actually found my self enjoying it. It was still the same repetitious stuff, but it just didn't seem bad anymore. The thing that keeps this series alive is the characters. This anime has a really cool cast. So if your looking for story this is definitely the wrong anime. If you enjoy simply watching character relations, then I would recommend this to you. Overall I would say its a quite enjoyable series.

| One of my favorite anime series, period.
Extremely entertaining characters, zippy story set with nostalgia in the 1960s, amazing animation (really, really good), great music score performed by a real orchestra, and just plain lots of fun. These guys know how to write episodic TV. Some of the episodes are just amazing.
The ONLY drawback is that Pionner only put 3 episodes per DVD. However they're now re-releasing them in their "Signature Series" at a much lower price. Worth every cent.

| My first impression about this show is that it was completely ridiculous. Stupid story, stupid enemies. But soon I realized (after watching ep 1) that everything was a parody. Yes, Gate Keepers is a parody about old sci-fi shows with some "power rangers" effect. And the result is just wonderful. The anime gets more and more serious as the story goes on, though. I loved the characters and their powers (specially the main character's) and their designs. I got totally hooked and was dying to watch it all. I even became totally excited about the end, even though it was predictable, I just couldn't stop. It's been a looooong time since an anime made me feel like this. One of the most enjoyable shows I've seen. So simple and, at the same time, so good. I will definitely buy this on DVD.

| Gatekeepers struck me as a vaguely mahou-shojo show (without the outfit transformations) blending mecha and sci-fi elements. A strange mix, coupled with a semi-cheesy plot and aliens who look like they just jumped out of an old sci-fi B-flick (well i guess this fits the 60s theme nicely).
The characters and magi.. err, i mean gate powers are actually pretty interesting, the romance part of the show done to good effect with Shun and Ruriko. The initial alien-of-the-week format later converges to a central plot and conclusion. Overall, Gatekeepers is rather fun to watch. Not one of Gonzo's best, but good entertainment as long as youre not expecting anything too serious.

| Gatekeepers is one of my new guilty pleasures. With the character designs being done by Keiji Goto (Nadesico), and animation by Gonzo (Blue Sub #6, Vandread) you know that the visual quality is going to be good. The story however was fairly uninteresting, though its 1960's setting is pretty damn cool. Gatekeepers however doesn't rely much on its story, but instead on the characters. Thankfully the majority of the rather large cast is interesting, though I do wish a couple of the characters had gotten a bit more screen time. While Gatekeepers isn't the greatest anime to come along, it is a fun, though rather shallow, series. Oh, and it's got lots of cute girls.

| How should I put this? Hmm...Gatekeepers is one of those anime that's doesn't take much brain to understand. The plot is very generic and pretty simple: "A group of teenagers must save the world from world domination." But hey, as long as it's fun to watch, it's all good ^_^.
The story is about a group of high-school teenagers who possess the special ability to open a "gate" to other dimensions and actually harness special powers from them. They defend the earth from the mysterious enemy only known as the "invaders" Assinged the codename "Gatekeepers" they are recruited by an organization known as AEGIS, who monitors all invader activity on earth.
This anime could be categorized as an action-comedy, although there is a small romance element in the story that involves some of the main characters. It follows a simple "monster of the week" format, where they fight a unique boss invader in each episodes. Some couple of the episodes (probably 2 or 3) are just cheery filler to lighten up the series a bit. There are some times in the anime when things get very emotional and serious, but overall it's a cheerful series that anyone can get into.
This is the very first GONZO anime I've watched, and I've been watching many of their works ever since. Gatekeepers is simple, but an anime that's very easy to get into. Check it out if you like action that doesn't get overly serious like Evangelion or Gundam Wing.

| GONZO was formed out of GAINAX employees who split from the group. They evolved techniques they didn't employ at GAINAX. GATEKEEPERS, the animated version of their PlayStation game, was one of their first attempts at TV. And, incredibly, this first attempt made them hit gold. What's astonishing is that VANDREAD was also being planned while they were producing it. Beginner's luck? Maybe, but it is so cool.
