Set some time in the distant future, Geneshaft takes place in a world where genetic engineering is widespread. One of the things it is used for is to ensure the women:men ratio in the world is at an "optimum" 9:1... for no good reasons that I can fathom. Of course, not only are the women genetically modified to be clever, but also good looking. Now, from this setting, you can probably guess the kind of anime this is gonna be. Yep, premises wise, this puts Geneshaft squarely in the middle of Vandread territory. But whilst Vandread just about succeeds at what it does, Geneshaft falls flat on its face.

So why is Geneshaft so much worse than Vandread? The difference is that Geneshaft tried too hard to be some thing that it's not. Given its ludicrous settings, let's not pretend it can be much more than a shallow show aimed to satisfy the fantasies of male otakus. But this didn't stop Geneshaft from trying. From the pretentious heavy guitar music to the pitiful attempt at constructing a serious sci-fi storyline and convey across some deep and meaningful message about love, it failed miserably on pretty much all counts. On the music front, it tried to do something similar to what was done in Trigun... and it failed. Trigun just about got away with it because it oozed style. Geneshaft is severly lacking in the style department. Trying to be cool and failing is worse than not trying at all. Then there's the sci-fi story they tried to build up. They set up the whole thing well enough, giving the viewer enough questions to chew on (though I wasn't too interested in chewing it since the anime failed to pique my interest in the first place). Problem is that they seem to have forgotten all about it half way through, because by the time Geneshaft ended you suddenly realise that the story is shockingly incomplete, answering hardly any of the questions posed in the first half. This is probably because towards the end they were too busy trying to force some generic "love conquers all" message down the viewer's throat, and... you guessed it - it failed. From my personal experience, emotional messages works out only after the anime has already won over the viewer with its characters or story. Geneshaft's emotional messages were founded on hot air - it might have worked had I cared for any of the characters... but I didn't. The main protagonist was forgettable; the girl who was supposed to be genetically engineered to be perfect was such an idiot that it was laughable she managed to get anyone to believe that she was perfect at all. The male captain was one of those emotionless people. It was obviously intended to make him "cool" and "mysteriously interesting". It failed. On both counts. He was so boringly cliched that I couldn't give a rats ass about his story. Ok I'll stop ranting on about the characters now... but only because I can't even remember any of the rest of the cast :P

Geneshaft is quite a distance from being good, but then again, I can't honest say that it's incredibly bad either. It simply falls into that worst area of mediocrity that makes an anime bad enough not to be taken seriously, but not bad enough to be funny. It's the kind of forgettable anime that makes you wish it was worse, cos then it would have been more entertaining than the yawn-inducing series it ended up as. Vandread flaunted its appeal to its targeted audience, and never tried to be anything other than the shallow fanservicey harem that it is, and as a result turned out half decent. Geneshaft, on the other hand, floundered hopelessly against the limitations that it shackled itself to with its hilariously bad background, and ended up failing to the extent that I am reminded of a motto on one of those demotivational posters:"Incompetence - when you earnestly believe you can compensate for a lack of skill by doubling your efforts, there's no end to what you can't do".

This sci-fi mecha/space/futuristic anime tracks characters as they embark on a ship built on alien technology that is far ahead of Earth's technology (of course) attempting to stave off a villian who blames humanity for all of the Earth's problems and wants to wipe out all of humanity for that reason (Hello, every Gundam series ever).

The plot's main themes include the limitless possibilities of humanity and the idea that love is an inherent and incredibly potent emotion that can overcome even genetic manipulation and emotion-controlling drugs.

The anime takes place in a world in which, due to either a feminist's wish to control the evil and aggressive men or a pervert's wish to get lots of hot women, the ratio of men to women is 1:9. (All the women are, of course, genetically engineered to be busty, good looking, and thin)

The story itself is full of plot holes and we are left with many questions after the end of the anime (What happened to the Council of Elders? Why was "Bis" the dog even introduced? How did the moon of Jupiter get an atmosphere or whatever at the end? What exactly are the rings or the giants? and many more questions) In fact, at the end of the anime I was left wondering what exactly was accomplished over the course of the anime, and wondered why I even watched it.

Also, the use of the malfunction OS 5 times every episode in attempts to create suspense during battles got old extremely quickly. Even in the final episode there are problems with the OS. I kept wondering whether or not they would find another way to build suspense during battles, but, alas, the writers never introduced anything new.

The only really interesting aspect to this anime was the use of DNA to designate "classes" of individuals based on the "color" of their DNA. Apparently some people's DNA was better than others, which made for some conflict. (Of course, this isn't really explained either: we never find out what "Skills" really consist of, or what the different colors really mean, or how exactly they are tested for these things, or why everyone has different Skills or DNA in the first place if some are better than others; Why not make everyone perfect?)

The contempt of the people of the 23rd century for humanity of our time was also interesting, and really betrays the contempt with which the writers/authors of this series feel about modern humanity.

The characters were fairly simplistic; the insecure girl with hidden potential, Mika, the aristocratic haughty blond girl, , the hyper-intelligent and high rational "Register", Beatrice, the "big-sister" type character,Sofia, and the childish Tiki, the playful playboy Mario, the insane violent Jean, etc. My favorite character was the hard-working, slave-driving young programmer, the "Pupeteer", Dulce. I thought she was a truly unique character who was truly interesting and enjoyable to watch.

The conflicts and development between characters were a bit contrived and trite: the short length of the series may have hampered the development of the many characters which were introduced.

The animation isn't too great; overuse of CG, reuse of the same combat animations, and the battle scenes just weren't exciting because of the lack of fluidity. The soundtrack was also fairly pathetic, and the op/ed were not enjoyable. The voice actors were decent but nothing too special.

This anime is extremely similar to Vandread, so if you want to see a more serious version of Vandread, a version without the many silly filler episodes and brain-dead female characters, Geneshaft is the anime for you. If you want a complex plot, characters with a lot of depth, or unpredictable plot twists, don't watch this anime.

I wasn't very impressed with Geneshaft; it was too trite, as were the characters. The music was horrid, there were too many plotholes that you just couldn't overlook and the ending was unsatisfying.

Basically there are much better sci-fi anime out there, but rather than say steer clear, I'd just say don't expect too much and you may not be too disappointed!

I like this series very much. It’s got beautiful and clear animation, interesting plot and well described characters.

Although in general the plot may not look very original, it’s still good and amusing and I enjoyed it a lot. The unhealthy proportions of the society, I meant the ratio men-women, messing with human DNA and so on. I like the episode in which the men from the past learn how much the humans had changed. It seems that only they are aware that in the chase of creating the best society, the human kind kind of forgot what it means to be a human.

Characters are cool! I feel sympathy towards Mika, Tiki, Mario… They are really nice. Besides, I love the way Beatrice changes under Mario’s influence and how we get a chance to look at the reasoning that pushes Mir to certain things. I pretty disliked her at the beginning, but in the end she became one of my favorite ones in the show.

And one more person, who I find the most, most interesting and unusual. Of course I mean Jean. I can’t say anything about this character because everyone will get one’s own opinion, but nonetheless Jean is the most fascinating, disturbing person in Geneshaft in my opinion.

The music wasn’t very impressing but I like the opening, that is really good. I had some difficulty with accepting the ending song but maybe some people actually enjoyed the vocal. Well, in the end I came to accept and even like it somehow, but certainly not “enjoy”.

Overall, this anime is wonderful and you should give it a chance! That’s a great mix of comedy, drama, light romance and mecha and you won’t regret watching it.

Some of you might hate this since it end short and presentation of the scenes looks kinda weird. I know you guy hate the idea "let's wipe the human race cuz we're scum of the universe" but the chars developing in this series really make me smile. It didn't cross my red line on how human should be or need to be.

Interesting things happen when Mario starting to teach everyone what's love is :) thanks to him our beauty register Beatrice finally learned how to love other human being. Really touching if you into the soap or romance stuff. For thouse of you who thing its pathetic, stop reading this review and pretend you never heard of this anime before. Rest assure, no one will mention it name for very long time. The only things that should've done but doesn't do is show more of the characters connection between our main lover(Mika and Hiroto). Atleast they could have done something extra like season 2 or more oav to express how the guy and girl interact with each other. It would be more interest than this "save the human-race" crap.

Anyway, I like it. It got touching romance and how "Love >> Skill" lol. Sappy shit if you ask me BUT I LIKE IT VERY MUCH. THANKS YOU.

My first impression is that this is some guy's perverted dream. Machines, 1:9 ratio of men to women, perfect women genetically engineered, and men under locks because they are too wild.
The way the story developed was both fast and kind of dull. It never really made me interested.

I think the animation is quite nice, the computer grpahics are better than most anime I"ve seen, although this is not original in terms of idea, the rendering is quite pretty. I haven't seen anything quite like this.

Sound is really, really plain. Voice acting is so plainnn, that I lost interest. Music is nothing special, just some filler to prevent the boringness of empty sound.

Story never really made me interested at all... just isn't enough background information to make me sympathize enough. I know this isn't a love romance, but there has to be something to make you get involved in this anime, and the animation is not enough. What's with this ring thing?

The characters have the potential of becoming better if they were in the right situation. They have a nice gathering of cast.... but the story they're put it has no hope...

I think this is just too chauvinistic, despite having so many females, it really is like girls and guns type thing. My first impression wasn't wrong. Maybe i'd sympathize more if the society we live in were genetically made and people were different because someone created us like that? But its the same now anyway, the competitiveness... so its kind of silly.
Furthermore, they try to take this philosophical stance about our current times. I really dont like this stance of the Ancient 21st century people being the worst because they just followed their desires.. but I guess it is a possible stance to take.
haha its so interesting when the 21st century astronauts suddenly acted out.

Overall, a typical and boring, eventlesss anime wrapped into a pretty package with occasional interesting twists.

I liked this very much. The use of computer generated graphics is very well done, but it seem to have lowered the budget for the traditional animation, leaving non-action sequenses a little stiff. The story progresses very neatly through all episodes and especialy the characters development is very well done.
Ok, it's a sci-fi anime, so I probably need to watch it a few times more before I understand everything perfectly...

personally, i'm not one for sci-fi animes..but this is wonderful. i love this series. although the plot is kind of weak and thin, the character development is fascinating. every episode is exciting and intriguing. not a single episode in this series bored me, which is quite a feat. the premise of the story is orignal, with the use of genetic engineering to create perfect humans. at first, i felt that mika should have realized her gene type, but the story again threw a curveball. white gene type is potential...ahaha. thats damn good. lord sneak just seem like another confused human who hates who he is. this is a series worth watching! watch it for mario and hiroto! :P

If there is one thing to say its that Geneshaft was full of potential as making of a classic. However it falls short in several areas and doesnt achieve the standard of storytelling as I would have wanted it to have.

Let me start of with the story, which in itself had a lot of bugs. First off there is little to no explanation of these "giants" and the true purpose of the "shaft". There is no closure about the Council that was running things from Earth. Furthermore the action scenes are made to be "suspensful" over malfunction of the OS of the Shaft. This to me was ridiculous; an OS only gives unpredictable results and crashes when an unknown variable is reached in a situation where the OS simply isnt programmed to handle. Once the unknown variable is identified a new program can be written on the OS to deal with the situation. However this was not the case here. The first time the shaft malfunctions is during a launching sequence where the simulations have worked fine. Launching is definitely not an unknown variable and for inexplecible reason the OS crashes. There were several other occasions this happenned. The writers definitely put this on convenience of whether the OS should crash or not. Very weak way to build tension.

The characters were all great. I liked everyone a lot. However there were too many of them for a series this short and werent developed properly. Its obvious that the writers had a lot to tell as every character had a good background but they couldnt cover everyone and seems rushed.

Inspite of these shortcomings this series is still a solid one. The universe created is definitely fantastic with its 9:1 female to male ratio. DNA to rate your worth etc. etc. all really good and a pretty cool setting for a good story. The characters are all likable and the story is good as well. The story is definitely rushed and I think it deserved to have a few more episodes to properly pan it out. Still this is a well worth watch and is very enjoyable especially after episode 4 where the story picks up.

i liked this anime, considering i got into it by watching it on Anime Unleashed on Tech TV and hearing David Lucas voice acting in one of the episodes (david lucas = voice of spike speagel). the only thing that REALLY eeked me about this anime is the fact that i personally never like to see women die, fictional or real... so this anime pushed my limits in that factor... but other than that it was well worth the watch :)

Extremely good graphics, I think it's the same as Gundam Evolve 5 (with the Nu Gundam). I was quite impressived with Macross Zero's animation but I was even more impressed by this type of CG/cel shading. I wonder why this type of animation hasn't picked up?

Hate the music but that's just personal preference. Didn't really fit the story at the beginning but once the Shaft action sequences started it reflected the mood well.

Story-wise was ok, some new ideas (at least for me since I haven't seen much sci-fi about gene manipulation) in new directions, which made it interesting. Very boring at the beginning, story picked up when the astronauts appeared.

Characters weren't bad except for Lord Sneaky (nice name) who's reasons behind his decisions is... sterotypical. Yes, I guess his reasons qualify for the previously mentioned (in another reviewer's post) philosophical BS that shouldn't have been there.

Overall it's a decent sci-fi anime that's enjoyable for a 13-ep run.

nice plot but reminds me of vandread (?) got some interesting point : the mecha's system always crash and the specialist have to debug in almost every episodes.(V_V). slowly getting interesting but not much developed and already episode 13. they should wrapped up some more in the end.

love the CG especially 'the shaft'. nice looking robot(not some generic anime type i think). hoping to see more of it in action though.

not too fond for the opening and ending music but the heavy metal background's great for me (check it at http://geneshaft.bandai-ent.com)

i like the sub-captain (Mario) and register (Beatrice) character

They screwed up badly tryng to put all kinds of philosiphal crap in it.

Animations:
tryng to make it look great with Computer generated images and stuff. but they failed. it makes it look rather cheap.

Sound:
the Opening and ending song kinda where nothing specail. the Opening song or a clone of it was used time over time throught the intire serie wich kinda was bugging me. bearly any use of background music to amplify it.

Story:
there much better storys out there.
still in some point it didn't fail. it started out very promissing, and the intire story didn't drop into using fillers of any kind. the story didn't end the 12th ep and the 13th ep was a rewatch or anything. but as a drawback of this they failed to build up a real scence where an so called "end battle" would take place.

Characters:
damn the main characeter Mika Seidou was more then just annoyng. Mario was quite interresting one of the few in the serie. most characeters where irritating. tho Beatrice was a nice character wich got Lucky at the end some more time

Value:
they FINNALLY found a reason in a serie why its always an 9 / 1 ratio woman to man. damn it. this sure is a male anime. and they failed!!! <i'm a male>
one other thing that annoyed me to death was the fact they kept talking about how stupid "we" (humand of the 21th) where and how much "smarter"/"better" they were while in the intire serie most characters act on emotion and where sell-centered. yeah they sure where a lot more wiser then us. fuck that!

Enjoyment:
i cannot deny the fact that i watched all 13 eps and that i did it within the time of 2 days. yet when i look back at it. i just kept hoping it got better. but it didn't really gets anybetter. i now wonder howmany of us do really scream and yell behind there pc when there typing and starting to act weird and stuff. i atleast dont! so who does!
ARGH stupid anime :X

I liked this series while I was watching it, but when I start to think about it, I find it not quite as good.

The CG is aweful in my opinion and the animation is too plain. Sound is medeocer. Story is well conceved but way too pretentious. Most of the characters have either no depth or I just didn't care about them. I don't think I'll ever rewatch this title, but like I said before, I didn't mind it so much while I was watching it the frist time around.

I don't think Gene Shaft ever got as popular as it deserved to be. The concept of this anime is really interesting - a society obsessed with genetic perfection, charged with competition. Men are considered dangerous and unpredictable, so there are a lot less of them around. I know that concept has been done before, but Gene Shaft makes it interesting. Instead of one person being "better" than the other, their gene types all represent different tallents. The characters were probably my favorite part of this anime - very well thought out.
