The second Naruto movie is both pretty and pretty poor. Further, the story seems very out of place in the Naruto universe, so there isn't much here even for die hard fans.

Seems 100+ episodes of fillers isn't enough to satisfy the creators, so what's their solution? A Random Naruto Movie!!

Animation - Say the least. The animation, in my opinion, looks even worse than the normal TV Series. They lack so much details and the new characters seem like they are all the same. Noticed the 3 girls. Only thing that differentiate them are their armor colors and powers.

Sound - Aside from the usual cast: Naruto, Shikamaru, Sakura, Gaara, and that puppet guy (don't care I hate him). Everyone else was pretty much new. Along with their annoying looks, came annoying voices. They did not strike my fancy in the voice department. I did not like the ending either.. "ding, dang, dong" isn't exactly heartwarming.

Story - Poorly thought of, random, and bland. A mysterious group appeared with unknown powers trying to create a "Utopia". Sounds cool, fare poorly. Just because they happen to appeared from the other side of the ocean, it happens their technology far exceed Naruto's country. Also, all of a sudden, Naruto and crew suddenly have headsets. Where did they find such advance technology all of a sudden to make headsets...?

Character - Naruto and crew, the basics. Then there's the new group who seeks Gelel, some power source thingy. Temujin, a rather obscure fellow. Good intentions, bad influences, short and simple. The three chicks with "animal" characteristic, they all look the same, just different variation. Haido, a chubby, greedy old man who seeks power and cover it up with lies. That's bout it for the cast. No real development nor well made.

In result, this movie was a failure. Even if it was a filler, it lacks the quality to even entertain. The tv series actually have some cool thought of missions, but this is plain ridiculous. Not worth it, let's hope the 3rd Movie will get rid of the sour taste left behind from this one.

Throughout this (excruciatingly long) film, it became quite obvious that the folks who write filler for Naruto were quite obsessed with Fullmetal Alchemist while they wrote this script. (The plot revolves around a stone of great power with evil potential; Gaara can often be seen clapping his hands and touching the ground to summon sand.) Without so much as shining moments for the Naruto series characters (that clearly serve as the selling point for watching a filler movie), the film as a whole stands as a completely unoriginal, poorly executed effort.

Naruto Movie 2... I kind of hoped there would be better action/fighting scenes. The flashy beginning was kind of entertaining with Gaara destroying everything (yes, Gaara has quite a few awesome fights in this movie) but as for the Naruto, Sakura, and Shikamaru fights I was thorougly disappointed. Not enough "smart" or "awesome" fights. The final boss was also disposed of too quickly and anti-climatically, just to give face to the new character.

Overall, this second Naruto movie is unspectacular in all aspects, except maybe for the sound effects. Naruto is still his simple minded self preaching the same ideals he always does against every enemy, with the same hot-headedness he always exhibits. Temujin (the new character particularly for this movie) is a bore to watch and his few moments of glory come predictably and forcibly. This movie does not really bring anything or improve upon the Naruto series. Although more action than the first movie, it is really shallow action.

Here's the basic recipe for this movie:
1) Throw in a little bit of cool characters from Naruto in (Gaara and Sasuke). Sasuke had about 2 seconds of screen time and it was absolutely POINTLESS. It was some dream Naruto has while knocked out.
2) Thrown in a silent character who gets converted by Naruto's religion
3) Endlessly preach Naruto's religion of strong will and never ditching your friends and ideals and protection and that junk
4) A whole mess of superficial fights
5) Add horrible villains for flavor
6) For decoration, put mediocre visuals and decent sound effects.
and VOILA
you have this movie

I guess I'm a little biased on this review because I'm such a Naruto geek, but I thought the second movie was decent.

Honestly I thought the animation in the first movie was better than this one though. My biggest criticism of this movie besides the animation was the story. To be honest, it sucked. In my opinion what saved this movie from being a total turd was the appearance of the Sand ninjas...Gaara and Kankuro.

In conclusion I thought the movie was tolerable. Coming from someone who is up to date with the anime series and who has actually tolerated all the fillers so far I think it was enjoyable to some extent. Someone who is more critical of the series might give a harsher review though. Anyway, it's a must see for all Naruto fans regardless.

This is the second Naruto movie. Once again, this is something that runs in parallel to the series, not in sequence. However, due to the lack of Sasuke, as well as the development state of the characters, it is supposed to be viewed between episodes 140 and 180. My personal recommendation is between episode 141 and 142.

Note that I am reviewing from the point of view of someone who is up to date with the episodes of the series, and has seen the first movie.

Visuals:
In general terms, the visual quality of the movie is a definate step up from the series, as well as the first movie. The action is often breathtaking, and moves with tremendous fluidity in the animation. The style is familiar yet more epic than the series, and the colours and artwork are vibrant and engaging.

Since movies are `expected` to be of a higher visual standard than their series counterparts, I watched this movie with a harsher and more analytical eye than the series. When the series peaked in its visual quality (episode 133), I found that it surpassed the visual quality of the first movie. (Fortunately, the first movie was supposed to be viewed just after about episode 101, meaning its visuals were perfectly fine for that time.) And now for this second movie, the makers once again push the visuals further, keeping its standard better than the series at the current time, (including episode 133).

The majority of the movie is lavish and beautiful to watch. The action is done `right`, and the scenery and surroundings of the settings are well presented and crafted. The one flaw in the visuals, which keeps it from receiving a perfect score, is the texture quality and details on the characters and some of the foreground objects. Especially on the characters, there is a bland tone to their appearence where better texturing would have really helped.

Sound:
The effects are of top calibur in this movie. Explosions, twangs of weapons, even `movement` is sonically well presented. The voice acting is also great, with most of the key voices being from the series. Musically this movie is VERY VERY different to the first movie and the series. There are almost no recognisable tunes, and this brings about the one minor flaw of the sound: whilst the music IS acceptable (not brilliant in my opinion though), and DOES fit the events, it feels odd for it to be in a Naruto adventure. The music of Naruto has shaped the series into a particular way, and the first movie fit that original feel. This one does not. If a few of the Naruto characters weren`t in this movie, I wouldn`t be able to tell it was a Naruto-based anime from the music (as well as other aspects - see below).

Story:
And now for something completely different. In no way did I ever really feel I was watching a Naruto story. To me, this movie felt similar to the Full Metal Alchemist Movie that was recently made. The plot was surrounded by technology - new and ancient - being part of the Naruto world. But "Naruto" as an anime has never quite indicated this degree of technology exists in the Naruto world. It was as though someone wrote a script for an anime movie involving technology and dictatorship, and then scribbled in 5 Naruto characters for the leads. I was not convinced that this story belonged in Naruto`s repetoir - it just blatantly never fit.

Another thing is the scale of the story: The main countries of the Naruto world are being slowly invaded. Sounds like a really big deal to me. Surely the leaders of the effected countries would lauch a defensive assault with their top people? Alas no - the kids have to try to sort it all out on their own. Once again the feeling of a random script with rushed Naruto characters creeps into the back of my mind. Trying to take something that`s already established and squeezing it to try and make it fit something else, does not result in something believable.

Ignoring for a moment, the fact that this is a story involving Naruto, one can objectively see that the plot iself isn`t particularly terrible, but IS somewhat cliched and predictable. The are some small but definate plot holes, and lack of explanation involving a few things that aren`t too important to the story but still make you curious. There aren`t too many slow areas in the movie, but when there are, they are DULL. This may perhaps be due to the action being so spectacular most of the time that it contrasts the slower parts of the movie too much.

On a final note concerning the action scenes in the story, it feels peculiar and somewhat disappointing to see the Naruto characters fight with the same old moves and same old tricks. Naruto doesn`t really show any move or strategy that hasn`t already been shown countless times in the series and other movie, and the same goes for the other characters. It seems very indulgent of the creators to do this. It`s like, this movie could have just as well been released a week after the first one, and the characters would have been at the same stage of ability development. It would have been better to either have shown more intelligence in the ability progression during the course of the movie; or have not made the movie at all, and instead waited until the series was further along enough to have progressed the development of the characters.

Characters:
The hero characters from the Naruto series featured in this movie are: Naruto, Sakura and Shikamaru. Also featured as secondary characters, are two of the Sand Village trio: Gaara and Kankurou. The rest of the cast are local to the movie.

Not much has changed with the main cast since we last saw any of them in the series. Their personalities are the same, and no one develops during the movie. Gaara, Kankurou and even Shikamaru too, seem only to be engaged in fight or action sequences whenever we see them. I suppose a nice thing here is that we get to see these characters` abilities in high-quality visuals at the very least. But what originally made you gawk at these skills in the series - i.e. discovering them and their power - is not a factor here. Nothing is new. All skills are known by any Naruto viewer and just applied to a different surrounding and different enemies.

The new and supporting cast of characters in Naruto are as predictable as the storyline, and to a degree, just as annoying. The characters are in no way complex, with stereotypes placed in at least two of the key roles: the deluded dictator, who thinks he`s doing the right thing but is obviously not; and the opponent who repents and turns to the side of good in the end. If you think these are spoilers, think again - it`s a painfully obvious quality from the first moment you meet these characters in the movie.

Some of the characters, in this case the "baddies", had the ill-established ability to basically turn into vampires. It was something that seemed so farfetched from the plot that I began to actually watch the movie with more concentration in case I had missed something.

The main flaw of the characters though, was the lack of development, and whatever characters DID develop, I thought had boring strories anyway. All in all, the characters aspect was a bit of a shambles.

Value:
I`d watch this movie again when I rewatch the series - that`s just a given. If I watch it again away from the series, it would be solely for the visuals in the fight scenes.

Enjoyment:
Yes, I DID enjoy this movie more than not, regardless of what I thought of it`s plot and characters. Of course, this is mainly because it satisfied that shounen aspect I craved, with its actions scenes and fight sequences. When it comes down to it, there is only one thing I would have wished for to make me enjoy it more: a more involving and interesting story premise that includes the Naruto world that we are so accustommed to. Setting itself too far away from the familiar Naruto world, we see little character development of the characters we are fond of, and subsequently less significant action. Having Naruto perform the Rasengan move on a random bad guy is less interesting and less significant than say, if Naruto were to do it to Gaara (for example).

Sure, I enjoy watching a random fight in Naruto, but I REALLY enjoy it if it MEANS something. This movie just wasn`t able to give it that significance to make it amazing, unlike the first movie, which covered more of its bases with slightly better character development.

Movies that come from tv shows, and especially shonen shows, have a long standing legacy...to suck.

So, is the new Naruto movie able to break that tradition?
Well...not exactly but it came close.

The reason movie 2 is better than movie 1 is that it has some of the "magic" that made Naruto a great anime. It has lots of fighting. Oh, and Gaara and Shikamaru too.

Unfortunately, it tries yet again to create an epic story, in a setting that has a small similarity to the world of Naruto as we know it.
In fact, if someone who has never watched Naruto see this movie, it will give him the impression of a sci-fi anime and not a fantasy-ninja one.

But the main problems are the rushed story and the cliche characters.
The whole story does not connect with the Narutoverse, the "gypsies-nomads-indians-mongols-aztecs" people they are totaly out of place, and i dont want to remember the "knights-lycanthropes-xmen" villains.
Many things are left in the dark and the explanations are lacking or nonexistent.

The characters:
Take the most overused anime archetypes and you have the general idea.
The boy, is deceived by the "Bad guy", thinking that he helps towards peace, where in fact he is just an instrument of war. Of course, Naruto's spirit does the job one more time and makes another friend. How original!!!
The "Baddy", has the appearance of a benevolent leader who wishes only good, but in truth he wants power to conquer the world...I am not joking.

But as i said earlier, this movie has good qualities and its better than the first.
Animation is veryy good. Even for a movie, production is top notch and it shows in the fight scenes.
The sound is somewhat different than the classic naruto tunes, but it suited the new movie perfectly.

At the end, the inclusion of Gaara and Shikamaru really helped the pace of this feature. There were some fight scenes full of classic naruto quality and if you are a narutard, you wont get dissapointed.
At least its a thousand times better than the fillers. But this doesnt say much about, does it.....?
