This animation is a science fiction that is interesting and more than just a cartoon. There is a real deep meaning that isn’t really seen or noticeable if you don’t look for it. Most people will be distracted by the strong female character Motoko Kusanagi or the constant exciting action.

This movie is perhaps the best cyberpunk themed Anime in existence. It has influenced many todays sci-fi films, including The Matrix, and rightly so. It has many innovations in the sound and presentation category. The intro. for example, is probably the most surreal intro you'll ever see. The overall pace of the movie is slow, and there is not a lot of action, so its probably not a movie for people with short attention spans, but I personally find the slow pace very appropriate to the gritty future theme. All in all, its visually spectacular, but even more impressive is the sound. The soundtrack by Kenji Kawal really makes this movie what it is. Its certainly not for everyone, the slow ambient droning and dissonant folk chanting from the intro, but in my opinion it is what defines the movie and makes it the best sci-fi anime in existence.

I actually just watched Ghost in the Shell again for the first time in a few years or so, and was surprised how much a few years can really bog your memory of things. GiTS is really one of those gateway movies that brought the cyber/sci-fi anime genre to its knees. An anime classic? Probably not in my eyes, but a decent movie in terms of overall plot-if you can get past the nudity scenes.

I always liked the Major's (Motoko's) character, even from this movie. She always seemed intelligent, quick to think and act on her feet, and yet conflicted in terms of her personal identity. This movie shows it in some remote perspective, even with her conversations with Batou-begging the question about the differences between humans and cyborgs and also encompassing that schematic within the overall theme of the movie. Even Motoko notes this to Togusa-the reason why section 9 wasn't made of totally cyborg individuals was because he added a different perspective into the mix and too "technicalility" would mean more predictability.

The main plot of this movie focuses on the group's efforts to track down a madman hacker. I believed it to be a good movie, though when you've seen the TV series and watch the movie for the first time in a while, it seems like a snapshot of an episode. If I had reviewed this on a "stand alone" basis (no pun intended), I probably would have been more likely to judge it within the limitations a movie has, and indeed you can see that within some frame of this movie, but surprisingly, it was adequately developed as an overall senario. And for this movie, while it doesn't develop all of the characters as much as you hope, it does a good job providing the framework within which they act and their interesting to watch overall.

Ghost in the Shell is a nice sci-fi action flick with some interesting animation for its time, and quite impressive considering it's over 10 years old. Voice acting, in both the Japanese and English equivalent, are good, I couldn't complain on either ground. Soundtrack was also good, in terms of being conducted by Kenji Kawaii. I definitely liked the ominous opening theme to the movie, it really seemed characteristic of the moody, yet ponderous nature of his work.

Overall, I'd certainly recommend Ghost in the Shell to those who want to see a decent sci-fi action movie. While its focus is cool action sequences, it has a decent story to boot and memorable characters, not so much in terms of their overall development, but certainly watching them in dynamic and the overall questions they raise with respect to the movie thematic.

GitS one of the few anime movies I have seen, it didn't really impress me. The science-fiction theme is cool, but not really what I see as science fiction.

Like the Read or Die OVA series, Ghost in the Shell is a movie that has one purpose: action. There's a plot behind the movie, sure, but its focus is not on drama. I will note, however, that the plot isn't nearly as shallow as other movies made in similar fashion; it's not merely an excuse to blow things up, as it has a purpose behind it. That said, it still offers a good excuse to have people shooting at each other, making things blow up, and causing a great deal of chaos. A fun way to spend a little over an hour of time to watch.

The animation, for a 1995 production, is quite impressive. There are a lot of cool nuances and lighting effects, such as the thermal camoflauge, that definitely stand out when pitted against other productions of the time. Cyborg and human character designs are contrasted nicely as well, as subtleties are the sole distinguishing factor (the unblinking eyes, for instance.) It's got smooth animation to boot, so no real complaints. All and all, what you should expect from a movie in terms of quality.

Not much to say in terms of sound, though. It has some average insert music, a decent pair of opening and ending songs, and a good Seiyuu; it does the trick well enough, but nothing spectacular.

The story is, like I said before, an excuse for a lot of action. Basically you've got a top-secret government police organization, Section 9, hunting down a cyber-terrorist known as the Puppet Master. He has the dangerous ability to hack cyborgs, erasing their memories and inserting those of his own creation so that they will carry out his bidding without being traceable back to him. It also happens to be one of the earlier anime to explore the cyber world versus real world scenario, and poses a few questions about differences between a natural self-aware brain and an artificial self-aware brain. The writers don't go overboard on the philosophical babble, though, and thankfully streamline it nicely into storyline without interfering with the action scenes.

As for the characters, you'll remember their faces and that's about it. The cyborg designs are purposefully left somewhat shallow, and being that the majority of the caste are cyborgs, not much to mention. They do their job at providing for good action scenes, however, so I've no complaints; excluding the credits, there's about 75 minutes of actual movie time, so there was no time to try and make the characters more complex than they had to be.

All in all, Ghost in the Shell is somewhat of a timeless movie. It's short, sweet, and definitely worth checking out if you haven't already.

Recommended.

Suprisingly this is not the best GITS but this is the first and with the first and when it was released it was a great anime indeed. But if you have watched all other GITS then going to this, it does seem flawed a lot and thats the problem of going back to the first.

This is truly a great visual masterpiece and has a great story to back it up. Some say that is you haven’t read the magna you may not catch on but found that to be false. It even maybe said even people that don’t care for anime may enjoy this movie.

Animation: The animation is brilliantly done for its time and still looks great today so it’s very deserving of a perfect score.

Story: The story truly is great and original probably were the matrix got some its ideas from. It seemed limited to what depth the story could dive in an hour long movie but you couldn’t really ask for much more.

Charaters: The characters are interesting and does dive some what into there characters but again in a relatively short movie there is only so much you can ask for.

Ghost in the Shell is a visually stunning sophisticated Hollywood surpassing digitally generated anime movie made in 1995.

The graphics and animation in Ghost in the Shell were ground breaking. The Digital Cell Work and Computer Graphics are absolutely astounding. The amount of detail in every scene is also astonishing. The animation is especially detailed - I could not spot a single scene which had a lack of frames. All this made everything, especially the fight scenes, exciting, and a pure pleasure to watch.

Although I did not enjoy any of the theme songs, they fit in excellently with the movie. The voice overs and sound effects were flawless, and the background music is like the themes - they fit in very well with the scene.

The storyline is innovative and captivating. The themes presented are thought provoking and realistic - futuristically at least. I absolutely loved the story line, only fuelled by the fact that I am a Computer Scientist with great interest in Artificial Intelligence. It starts really well and concludes with plenty of room for a sequel - which I am going to watch very soon.

The characters don't express a lot of personality, but are extremely fun to watch. The way how the main characters handle and react to situations are hilarious yet realistic for whom they are. For a movie, the amount of character development is very good. Although little of their histories are known, their purpose for appearing and reason for existence are very well explained.

I found Ghost in the Shell to be an absolute joy to watch. It is not just an extremely high quality anime, but also a ground breaking movie in the history of anime. Ghost in the Shell is a must watch for all people following any anime, as it is one of the few shows which raised the bar for all anime to come, and was responsible for the huge rise of popularity the japanimation.
I got my copy of Ghost in the Shell at an excellent value (2007), so it is definitely a must have for anyone who does yet own this masterpiece.

This one is a visual masterpiece, truly amazing how beautiful this anime is. I found myself getting lost in the visuals more than once, and to imagine this is from 1995… amazing. Unfortunately the Movie as a whole doesn’t stand par with the graphics. It can be long winded at times and the characters are as plain as a piece of cardboard – it really takes away from the movie as a whole and leaves a less enjoyable experience than what “could” have been.

The story touches on aspects of the human mind we dare not go at times. What if we were in a world where there are androids with human like ghosts present in them? Does this make them human? Or merely a machine trying to be human, this is what the story touches on as the main character tries to figure out for herself - about the meaning of life. The movies story has an intresting concept however due to the short time (88mins) it feels like there was not enough time to fit everything in, and some aspects just become unclear and even after multiple viewings one is still unsure as the message the movie tries to send.

The characters are the biggest disappointment here; they are as bland as could be. They have no redeeming qualities about them; it really drags the enjoy-ability of the story down when the characters are so uninteresting and emotionless (even if they are part machine). I couldn’t connect to any of the characters, it just made the whole movie feel bland and disappointing.

Overall this anime is good, not great as most claim it to be, although I can see why many enjoy it as much as they do. It just simply doesn’t do it for me, good visuals and sound isn’t enough to carry a movie and even if it has a complex story. It just didn’t feel well told and then there are the boring characters. It is an anime that I have watched 3 times, so it does have high re-watch-ability although each time I see it I end up saying to myself… “good, but overrated”. I guess we can't love them all.

In the future years of 2029 a whole new world is apparent. Cyberspace has evolved into something what is no different from the real world itself. People are getting cyborg implants to improve their brains, muscles or reflexes. People can manipulate memories, create a whole new past for the individual in which he unquestionably believes. Robots, machines and programs are getting their own A.I. which is not that much different from the normal intelect. There is but one thing which distinguishes a person from a machine - a ghost. A thing which is very similar to the soul in christianity, I assume. Yet, suddenly a huge phenomenon arises, a ghost is spotted in the artificial cyborg body. This leads to the main character herself, starting to question her own existance, since she's a cyborg, with a human brain and a human ghost, but could it be that she's merely created from someone's memories?

What I am most surprised at is that how did they manage to convert such a rich world in a mere span of one and half hours. The whole cyberization process is believable from the first minutes of the show. Until the very end you encounter more and more weird, futuristic inventions. Where such things as "brain hack" are abundant, being able to hack into someone's brain is a tempting idea for sure, though of course it is a huge crime.

By the way, this anime bears many similarities to "The Matrix", before I had read a few fansites about that matter. For example the opening animation where green digitals are flying around, or the plugs in the back of the people necks. To note this anime was created in 1995, manga even earlier, so the only ones who could've done any ripping would be "The Matrix" team. Anyway, I believe that this movie is way superior to anything Matrix has accomplished. While in the Matrix the main idea was to span a shitload of fighting scenes in an interesting world setting, in Ghost in the Shell few fights are merely animated to advance the story and the sparkling beauty of the true science-fiction world.

If you like science-fiction then I recommend this from the bottom of my heart. This is probably the shortest sci-fi anime, which actually is carried out wonderfuly.

Awesome visuals and a complex story that can lag at times. This anime is well known in the west I am sure due to its eye catching visuals; some of the best I have seen in any anime period. All the characters are well drawn and action scenes, backrounds etc are pure bliss to the eye. However even though the story is a good one, it is not told as well as it could have been. Maybe there wasn't as much time since it was a 90 min movie. It also dragged at parts where one just wished for something to happen. The characters are very plain and too dull to be of much interest, even if they are not supposed to show emotion it hurts a show when you cant connect with any of the characters - probably the animes biggest let down for me. Overall it is a good anime and should be watched by all at least once.

This is a landmark anime film. It helped show some of the west what anime can be about. The political thick plot it surrounds can be a little overwhelming at first watch but if you read through its glossary on the extras and rewatch you will soon get the hang of the plot and see it for the genius it is.

Ghost in the Shell Movie was the anime which brought about the concept of mixing sci-fi with a good story in anime. And thus it deserves a special place in the list of groundbreaking anime. But as a movie, is it really that great? That is debateable, I saw the Stand Alone Complex 1st and 2nd Gig before watching this - and as much as I hate to admit; the movie is doesnt leave as much as of an impact as the series did. And for the same reasons I cannot help but compare the two.

The story of GITS Movie is quite simple. Section 9 is on the trail of the Puppet Master, a super-hacker which is giving a lot of trouble. No one knows who he is, and his intentions are a question mark. Unlike the series, there is not much philosophy in the movie. Most of it revolves around the fact of souls being replaced with an electronic brain, hence the question of life and self. It is not given a lot of time onscreen and hence fails to come through to the viewer as something of great import. Also the plot feels rather rushed in some areas. Things about the diplomats, the crisis in their areas are not explained with as much finnese as done in the series. How would it fare for a person who is entering into the world of GITS for the first time? It would be a so~so entry as far as the plot is concerned, the sci-fi bit will most probably depend on how much the viewer is into the genre.

Another thing which was missing in the movie is the humor and the snappy dialogue. Also the characters are not given much time for introduction. I had read that American crtitcs had labelled The Major as "a Xena - Warrior Princess of the sci-fi world who strips her clothes in an instant." And judging from the movie, they are not wrong. The Major is not that great as she is in the series. Her personality in the movie is kinda erratic. Same goes for Batou - he is more like a short-tempered brute running around with hots for the Major. Togusa, Ishikawa, Bouma are all in the background. Bouma is not even shown, and as for Pazu - he is not present in the movie. And Tachikomas are not there (how could they have left them out?)

So is the movie crap? No way! It is just mediocre as far as the plot and the characters are concerned. And this is largely due to the fact that SAC 1st gig was so brilliant, that the movie is eclipsed by it. Do I recommend this? Sure, take it out on a rental, it will be a good time pass for 90 minutes - just dont expect 1st Gig out of it. For first timers - it is a good intro to the world of GITS. They would not regret this and would find the sci-fi part relating to Ghosts/Shells quite original. For me, it was an average experience - by no means bad, but not that great either. Lets see how GITS: Innocence turns out to be.

Random Notes: The Matrix is inspired from this movie. Also the opening credits of The Matrix are nothing but copy of the opening credits of GITS. Just make the scrolling of the random characters in GITS to random numbers and add a 3-D effect to them.

Wooohooo!!! My 75th Review!!!

You know, this movie really should get extra points for turning the manga into something watchable. The original manga is a fun action-packed seinen adventure, and it's obvious Shirow had no idea what deep questions he was hinting at. The follow-up manga, Man Machine Interface, attempts to be deep like this movie, but reads more like "technobabble, technobabble, fanservice", and simply put, is painfully boring (yet the art is beautiful).

Anyways, this movie is amazing. I saw it dubbed when I was 12 or 13, and thought it was kinda blah. But then again, it was dubbed and I was young, so there was the problem. I rented it from my library to watch subbed, and it is actually really good. For 1995, the animation is impressive, the depths of thinking this movie reaches is high. Even now, I don't know the answers to the questions this movie poses. I don't think anyone does. And that's why I couldn't appreciate this when I was younger - I didn't care too much about what life was, what human was etc. I think anyone going in expecting a shoot 'em up movie is dead wrong. While on a superficial level it is a standard cops vs. bad guys movie, and the action sequences are the highlights of the film IMO, it's so much more than that. The insightful dialogue is the key to the movie. The last scene is really something too.

In short, this is something for the thoughtful anime fan. The young teenage fans will probably not appreciate this as much as someone who has gone through life more and has wondered about these things. Seeing how high it is on the animenfo chart, it seems that this is something that many people have embraced, and that this movie truly is something universal, and able to break down genre barriers. I do not typically like SF or anything technological like that, but this had something more intellectual going on, therefore I liked it. And you probably will too.

An existential action anime? That's what Ghost In The Shell, a.k.a. Kokakukidotai (Shell Mobile Force) is, with animation sporting top-of-the-line computer imagery in the Bladerunner-like metropolis of Newport, but that's secondary compared to the underlying intellectual theme.

Major Kusanagi Motoko is a skillfully trained cyborg assassin in Newport's Section 9, who's taking out a diplomat illegally trying to give immunity to a listed programmer, demonstrates her training, including an amazing moment when she dives off a building, picks off her target, and via a thermoptic camouflage (i.e. portable cloaking device), vanishes from sight.

She and the members of her team, consisting of the mostly human Togusa, Ichikawa, and Batou, a burly no-nonsense blond cyborg with electronic eye implants, are trying to track down the Puppet Master. The Puppet Master is a master hacker who hacks into people's brains and uses them for his dirty work, presumably to carry out espionage or terrorism, leaving his puppets no memory of their infiltration. One of his puppets keeps using a public computer to try to infiltrate the brain of his wife, who is divorcing him and wants custody of their child. When he's picked up, he is told by Section 9 that his wife, child, and divorce are all false memories imprinted by the Puppet Master, causing further distress to the man when he is told the fake memories can't be erased.

However, there are two conflicts going on. One is Kusanagi's mission to hunt down the Puppet Master. The other and the one with a deeper meaning is the search for her identity within the scheme of a whole, or rather, something beyond her individual self, highlighted by her words taken from the Book of Corinthians: "For now we through a glass, darkly." This reflects an earlier statement when she says in observation of a victim of the Puppet Master, "all data that exists is both fantasy and reality. Whichever it is, the data a person collects in a lifetime is a tiny bit compared to the whole." A postmodernist flair is introduced when the Puppet Master says "While memories may as well be the same as fantasy, it is by these memories that mankind exists."

The question thus is, is it possible for the soul to exist in a highly technological world, where special operatives have cyborg shells, metabolic control systems, ESP, and cyber-brains?
The search is also symbolized when she surfaces, and the animated image of her rising up to meet her reflection, representing her true self. She wonders if she has a ghost, an animating soul or spirit. In looking at the construction of her body in the opening credits, one sees that she's heavily mechanized, with an outer layer of flesh surrounding her.

Her attempt at defining the self begins with a unique face, voice, childhood memories, feelings for the future, and the set of mental processes producing a consciousness that is "me." However, upon a discovery involving the Puppet Master, she further worries that what if there wasn't a real "me," that "I believe I exist based only on what my environment tells me. ... What if a computer brain can generate a ghost and harbor a soul? On what basis then do I believe in myself?" In other words, what if there is no higher power to connect to, bringing into mind the word "religion," which means "to reconnect to."

The action sequences aren't extreme, ultraviolent, or gratuitous in the chase sequences, but are moderate, that is until the heavy artillery is brought out, at which point glass, metal, and rock starts to fly. A very intelligent, thought-provoking, one-of-a-kind existential, soul-searching anime, with Kusanagi despite its cyborg dominance showing some human traits.

Image Quality: Very good for the most part. The anime's dark atmosphere and dull colours transfer well to DVD. The blacks aren't as good as I would hope and at some points the image quality is, for some reason, a tad worse (the intro shots for example), however times like these are few and far between. The whole image is very soft and I hoped the edges would be a little more sharp. I'm not sure if this is because of the transfer or the movie itself because I haven't seen 'Ghost in the Shell' in any other digital format and I certainly aren't going to take for reference the VHS edition *grin*. But don't let what I said put you off, as for the most part you'll be more than satisfied at the image quality. For an example, when the optic camouflage kicks in and you have the 'rainbow' effect (if you see it you'll know what I'm talking about) all the colours are very well defined and very crisp and you'll find yourself thinking how cool it looks. On another shot of Bateau inside his car more to the end, you can see water drops on the side window... try doing that on VHS. Very nice.

Sound Quality: When I bought this DVD I wasn't expecting anything special on the sound department. Boy, was I wrong. The sound comes in two flavours: English 5.1 and Japanese 2.0 The stereo version is nothing to write home about. It's adequate... just. The only good thing about it is that you get to hear the Japanese voice acting which is always nice, other than that (if you've got a 5.1 setup) just forget about it. The 5.1 version is where the sound really comes to life. It hasn't got an intricate and complex soundstage like 'Twister' for example, but it sure delivers the sound with a punch. Your subwoofer will love you every time you pop in this DVD. From the roaring explosions, machine gun fire or the deep drums on some parts of the musical score, the bass is always deep and clear. Music is all around you, coming from all channels most of the time, so this at least creates an involving atmosphere, especially when the music is of the ambient type I've described. The surround channels are also nicely used. When shots are fired you get a sort of 'echo' effect going in the two surrounds. It might not be accurate, but when those HV bullets start flying around, you'll be glad to have the right setup. On the market chase scene, for example you get voices and sounds coming from the surrounds bringing the market to life. The surround channels are never aggressive nor overused, but I think this is the best you can expect out an anime.

Extras: Well, they're better than most DVD I've seen. You get a 25-30 min 'Making of Ghost in the Shell' which is narrated by the guy who does the voice of Bateau in the English version (I hope I'm right about this, it does sound a lot like him). This won't tell you anything terribly new, but it does provide a little insight at some of the techniques used.

The DVD also has a sort of index that provide information on certain aspects of the universe of 'Ghost in the Shell'. Characters, machine design, the various sections involved, etc... again, nothing terribly new, but I can see how it can shed some light in certain areas to those who aren't very familiarised with Shirow's universe or the anime itself. The rest of the extras are just ads for manga video, polygram, fan clubs, etc...

The art is there, the surround sound is there, the cool story is there, the hawt chick is there... but what's clog this movie down is that they don't have enough action and they talking way too much.

Ghost in shell spash us with enchance visual and detailed frames. The work showed that they worked really hard to get this movie out. The idea about ghost(soul) in the shell(or body) is intesting but the whole story about organiztion always been a drag. The pace in Ghost in Shell is very slow. Trying to be smooth and surreal is one thing but this is just boring. While you might be amazed with animation, there's nothing there to think off. First half doesn't give any hint for anything to happen in later half. Of course we all surpise with the ending and want to see some more of this stuff but what the use of surprise if you stop watching this since it was boring in the first half. Instead of giving us some comedy to light thing up, they give us a leacture about life and death, and what's the defination of life or what's human form. I would say A ROBOT would like movie than me for sure.

BE AMAZE at how people work hard to give you such incredible anime. WATCH as the you never see such cool art. STAY AWAKE untill the end. You WILL SEE A TRUE ORIGINAL PLOT.

I've finally managed to read the original GITS manga and had watched some episodes of the First GIG.

I'd recommend to watch this movie only after reading the manga or else the viewer will not grasp that much. Even then the manga story is so complex that it is impossible to be adapted in a short movie.

Regarded by many to be the inspiration behind The Matrix, this anime is a very original, deep, complex, intellectual, philosophical, thought-provoking and post-modern piece of art that not everyone can enjoy.

Animation:
The animation was one of the best for its time, so deserves a perfect score for that.

Sound:
While there isn't much music in this anime, the ones there suit the scenes very well. One of these pieces of music is a background theme found in many scenes, which has a unique "chant" sound.

Story:
The story has a very slow pace to it. It wasn't very interesting until near the end, when it became very philosophical and thought-provoking, which are easily the best parts of this movie. It would have been better if they improved the pace by showing them much sooner. The plot itself explores a number of themes relating to the the effects technology and digital information have on our lives. It explores themes about how we define a "self", how we define a "life-form", how we define "truth", and about what it really means to be "human". It also explores the differences and similarities between organic life-forms and digital life-forms, how digital life-forms can be formed from the flow of information, and how they can reproduce. These are all original and intriguing concepts, that hold a lot of truth to them.

Characters:
Although there is a lack of character development and there isn't much emotional attachment, most of the characters behave like how real people would. The Major raises questions about whether or not a "self" exists inside of her "ghost". The Puppet Master raises questions about whether or not digital life-forms are people, so in that sense the Puppet Master is also like a character despite not being organic, which is a very interesting concept for a character, so it deserves credit for these concepts.

Value:
Although it wouldn't be very interesting to watch the movie again as a whole, it's still very intriguing to watch the more philosophical scenes, and examine and understand the themes expressed in the anime. This anime can really make you think a lot about the themes presented, giving it much value.

Enjoyment:
If you're intrigued by the themes and concepts presented in this anime, then you should enjoy it. If not, then you might not enjoy it but should still watch it nonetheless, because it's not an anime that's simply meant to be enjoyed, it's meant to give the viewers an understanding about the themes its trying to express, like a piece of art.

Ghost in the Shell is a very complex and thought provoking delve into philosophical issues delving into our existence and technology, and the relationship between them. Clearly an influence to the Matrix films, it is a truly original spectacle, one in which I recommend to anyone wanting a meaningful, engrossing film.

One of the best known anime in the western countries. A true anime classic. Sets new standards in cyberpunk fiction. You gotta see the original manga by Masamune Shirow. This is just so good.

What really is human? What is truly life? And how to define conciousness? Or do we need to?
