fans felices

This anime makes me think one thing, "...WTF?!?"

The characters are incredible. Some of the better designed animes in the magic based action drama genre.

Video and sound were great.

All in all, if you had asked me what I thought of the anime about 2 episodes before the end, I would say it was one of the best I have ever seen. BUT... if you ask me now that I have seen the last two episodes... GRRRRR. This animes ending is just freaking painful. Its horrible contrived. I wont go into details why I feel that way because I hate posting spoilers, but damn the makers of this one. Why did they feel the need to ruin the anime with that horrible, somewhat nonsensical ending. They could have pulled that ending off if the series was two seasons long. But as it was only one they failed miserably. Koodos to whoever F'd up the ending.

My horrible disdainment for the ending aside, it was worth watching. I will never watch it again (because of the ending) as I do most animes. I think if I were to watch it again the looming ending would just piss me off.

So in conclusion. Watch it, love it. Finish it, and burn it.

This was the first anime I ever saw, and it got me interested in anime in the first place. At first I thought anime generally was this good, but was soon disappointed. I cannot believe that this is ranked around 180, having seen some of the supposedly better ones (though just a few). The only thing I wish is that the story and the characters were a bit more developed and complex, I wanted to learn more about them. I feel the plot and the characters are by far the most important elements. Concerning the animation, music, sounds, and also the value and enjoyment, I have absolutely nothing to complain about. I would guess this is ranked only 180 because there were too little “maturation” of the characters, and we did not become well enough acquainted with them during the short duration (I find) of the anime. I think this had the potential (but didn’t utilize it) to become one of the best.

Overall I "thoroughly" enjoyed this Anime & it's definitely in my Top 10. The animation is sharp & clean, I really enjoyed the depth in some of the characters (although I think they didn't give a few characters enough depth) I don't want to give away any "spoilers" and this is my first time doing a review so I'll just say that if anyone hasn't watched the "entire" series than they need to start over from ep.1 and watch every drop. You will not be disappointed. ^_^

Excellent anime. Great choice to see it. I love this kind of "world rescueing" story. I fell in love with Saber in the first sight. I watch whole series without breath and i was really curious how everything will finish. I loved Tsukihime nad this is even better - Bravo Type-Moon. They did excellent job again.

Okay, all right, it seems I am finally able to pull my thoughts together on this one. I can tell you right now, FSN is one of the hardest anime I've ever had to rate.

And there are a couple of reasons why. I decided to partake in an unusual ritual of playing the game while watching the anime, both at the same time, and both for the first time. Essentially, it took some time for me to filter out the two from each other. However, all this brings some great advantages for reviewing as a result: which is that I have a clear perception of how to rate this anime 'fairly'.

Let me begin with the easy parts: animation is solid and flatout beautiful at times. I very much enjoyed how they animated Shiro and Saber, and the other characters of course. The animation was also very loyal to the original game's ideas, which brings me to the next point.

Story was, also, very loyal toward the original game. This was actually quite refreshing, as I pretty much expected them to butcher the original ideas [which usually happens to some extent]. Instead, they stayed incredibly strict to the original game's script, which was a delight I'm sure for many. There were some minor changes, but none that I found that noticeable. In fact, I can testify many of the same LINES were used throughout.

The sound was not particularly appealing nor special to me (which is unfortunate, because the game had great music). In short, there wasn't really anything authentic or emotionally-hitting. It seemed there for the sake of being so, and this hurt the overall anime experience quite a bit.

All in all, FSN is not a bad series. But let me now get to the nitty-gritty, more difficult topics, such as the graphic novel adaptation process.

I'm going to agree with reviewers who said that this was an impossible feat. While playing the game version of FSN, I found a lot of what they say to be true. The feelings. The unspeakable impact. The originality and refreshing yet emotional touches. Where was it all coming from. Was it the anime that I was watching? Or the game.

[*quicknote: i played the 'full game experience', which meant that I used Mirror Moon's recent FSN complete english translation with imported japanese voices from Realta Nua]

The answer is simple and without a doubt: the game is hands down much better than the anime. In fact, I dare say, the game puts the anime a little bit to shame. Now I say this with some hesitation however, because in the end, FSN-anime is not really that bad. The animation is solid. The story is accurate. The characters /VA's are outstanding. So what is the real problem here? Why does FSN-anime feel a little dead? [A short note regarding this being an "H-game" adaptation. I personally ABHOR non-authenticity. That is, I hate harem. I hate 'fan service'. But FSN is none of this. I can really honestly say that FSN is the first "H-game" that I've come across that doesn't at all feel like one [assuming you stuck to the 'real'-route like I did]. In fact, I can testify that there is barely any H in the game at all, but continuing on..]

I think most viewers here would understand that the answer is simply because of how different a graphic novel is in design. There are so many words that can help the protagonist (or you the reader) understand little nuances that the anime just doesn't pick up on at all, or ignore. FSN-game is just too transcendental; way too epic. The feeling is completely different, and much more real/heart-felt. And you can believe me because 'fanboyness' can't apply to me, since I was watching/playing/finishing both at the same time.

In essence, FSN-anime does not deserve a poor score. It also, however, doesn't deserve to be congratulated for doing a 'grand job'. It does, however, get credit for trying its best in doing what it was set out to do: it tried to please fans, it had great animation, and it was loyal to the story mostly. Now a lot of the 'magic' of the novel was definitely nerfed, but was it the fault of the anime? Perhaps it was inevitable. Trying to turn a graphic novel into an anime is tough work, especially an award winning one.

Long story short: the anime was not mediocre, but not great. However, the game was undeniably brilliant.

In closing, I'd like to rabble a bit about Shiro, the protagonist. I think he's been getting a lot of undeserved bad rap. Now of course all these things are really just opinions, so its totally up to you. But despite all that, I feel that Shiro is heavily misunderstood, largely because the anime fails to fill in the gaps from the game. Shiro is exceptional as a main character IMO in that all his psychological attributes are relatable and quite believable. He cares for people too much, because he feels guilty for real tragedies that have occurred in his past. It is a psychological shield, a protection against a 'truth' that had occurred. I don't at all find him 'annoying' or unrealistic. In fact, he was made to be incredibly realistic. He is you, the reader.

But perhaps the most 'annoying' thing IS that FSN-anime doesn't have the magic of the novel; so really, I guess I could hardly blame others for hating Shiro or downplaying FSN's brilliance. One of the biggest letdowns is the anime's failure to really 'deliver' with the relationships between the main characters: like the relationship between Saber and Shiro. The relationship between Tohsaka and Shiro. The little pieces that made their relationships so special was heavily watered down, but recall that I'm not raving against the anime either. All in all, I guess I'd say I wouldn't necessarily recommend nor disrecommend this anime to anyone. The game however, is a different story.

First a little motivation to those unsure of watching this or not, let me assure you as a person who loves myth and legend. None of this show was exaggerated in anyway to being out of line in any mythology or detail. All the characters are displayed in the exact same way they are done in the stories told of there heroics and prowess. Such as King Arthur(Saber) although setup in a different world this king Arthur is female, and no it was not done on a level to please fanboy nerds to enjoy some sexy fighting girl, if anything it's far from it. Hercules was perceived in a different way as his story of sin and the 12 judgments and trials he had to go through.
(this part is for those who have already watched it, but from what I've been able to find out and figure out, *Archer* is based on King Richards top longbowman named "Edrick Rochien" grew up a blacksmith and was conscripted into King Richards army to take Jerusalem in the crusades.

The story itself is new and brandish bringing in thoughtful and new idea's for future shows to take effect, it's a genius use of the effect of summoning spells and the fate of cards choosing what your power desires because nothing is ever certain. All the characters except for the Irish hero of legend have great depth to them, poor Red Dog with his Gael Bolg, all left out.

Finally the IMO(In My Opinion). I don't see why this show is not on the top 10 list of this website, it's actually disgusted me a bit not that I have anything to say about it. But seriously WTF i see a top 200 list and this isn't even on there, either it's been overlooked or people who vote for this don't know their head from their ***.

Note: This review is based on Eclipse fansubs, which, unlike their later releases, are of mediocre quality, but have plausible translation. Recommended if you are not too picky about visible blurriness. Also, since I have read both Fate Stay Night and Fate Hollow Ataraxia visual novels in their original language, my review will have a lot of references explaining why anime of fate stay night is stuck as mediocre, even though the original novel is one of the best works of fiction to ever grace us.

Quote:
"What is a hero if he cannot drink that much of a curse? All the evil of this world? If you want to taint me, then bring at least triple that amount! A hero is someone that bears all the people in his sight on his shoulders. I have been shouldering everything in this world from ancient times!"

This wasn't the best quote from hundreds of great quotes from the novel, but it actually made it to this anime untarnished. And though it does mirror the atmosphere of Fate Stay Night TV, it doesn't mirror the depth of its novel. Originally created as novel by the ingenious studio TYPE-MOON (Tsukihime) and written by my all time favorite writer Kinoko Nasu (Tsukihime as well) Fate Stay Night is about seven ambitions clashing with each other, about a war called the Holy Grail War. The war where seven best magicians in the world compete with each other in a deadly free for all death-match compelling both their wits and power for one single purpose - to attain the Holy Grail, a tool which will make any wish, no matter how inconceivable or crazy, into reality. However, everything is even deepened by the fact, that all seven masters summon a single all-powerful entity servant, a hero from legends, past or present, hence not only giving the whole plot vast mythological and historical depth, but also adding seven retellings of some of the best myths humans have created in their history in form of flashbacks. Unfortunately that part is exclusive to the novel, so in anime you will only see them rending and shredding stuff apart while thinking something along the lines of "Huh? Wait, which hero was that blond guy?".

Well, anyway, let's go straight to the point. The medium of visual novels is by far the hardest to animate. I believe many of you are familiar with the feeling when your favorite book is turned into a mediocre movie. Yes, even the books are hard to animate. But just look at visual novel, it doesn't even have a straight line for a plot. For example in Fate Stay Night, extremely rich and concentrated on various forms of philosophy, there are three different paths where not only the plot and the ending is different, but character development and even philosophy itself deliberately contradicts that of the other paths. Now think what happens when you put all the paths into one, cut some stuff out and let it go to television screens? Result is literally a homunculus, without soul, just a shell of its original self. It's pretty much equivalent to constructing a plane out of a bicycle in hopes to cross the Atlantic ocean. Doesn't sound like a fun trip, does it? Yes, anime of Fate Stay Night fails. How hard does it fail? That is what my scores are for. A magnificent creation worthy of nothing less than a perfect grade is reduced to sixes and sevens here. While it's still a plausible anime, anyone, even with a single speck of wisdom, should read the original novel, rather than spoiling themselves with this, well, mediocrity, which is not saved by the pretty good (inspired only by the novel nonetheless) direction by Yamaguchi Yuji (Strawberry Eggs). I mean, seriously, let's face it - making a novel which contains over 8000 pages, yes, 8000 pages, into an anime, is a task doomed to fail from the very beginning. Just do the math, if you can read one page per minute you end up spending 133 hours on the novel, while 24 episodes of anime are roughly equivalent to 8 hours.

It has been about a year since I watched Fate/Stay Night and I never got around to reviewing it. Because of this, my opinion is not the best to go off of if you are reading reviews in order to decide to watch it or not.

That aside, I loved this anime. I remember watching it mutiple times a year ago.

I've heard quite a bit about this show before watching it and I must say, it lived up to my expectations. Overall, the show was a blast to watch and maintained a very high bar of quality throughout. Don't be surprised if you find yourself forgetting the time and continuously watching marathon style.

+ Good animation.
+ Intriguing premise.
+ Nice character design.
+ Fine bgm.

- Shirou
- Not much value.
- Story feels a bit shaky.

Prior to watching this, I was under the impression that it was a major disappointment (negative hype). As a result, I was surprised to find that this show is not really bad. It's pretty much entertainment with occasionally serious undertones, but not overly thought-provoking or meaningful.

Fate/Stay Night is based off pretty good source material, as to be expected from Type-Moon, but this adaptation isn't nearly as good as Tsukihime.

This isn't a very well done anime, but is entertaining to watch, and so I would recommend it if you're looking for a mixed action-drama-romance-ish anime, and have already seen everything better. The problems are fortunately overshadowed by this anime's entertainment value.

Fate stay/night is a series that seems more underrated than overrated judging by people's opinions. Of course if you let the hype get to you, then you'll definitely find yourself disappointed.

Rather than providing a lot of depth, Fate/stay night delivers by providing a very solid entertaining and engaging experience.

Along with Haruhi Suzumiya, this is another series that doesn't quite live up to the hype. However, it did fare a bit better than the former. And one of the main reasons is it gets straight to the point. We get immersed in our protagonist, his personality, his motivations - by the end of Episode 1 it is pretty easy to see the kind of person Shirou is. We also get to see a lot of Rin, which is more than welcome. By the time the 3rd episode concludes, Saber is also in play and all our main people have receieved decent air time and enough background to show us the type of people they are.

That said, there are a few drawbacks to this show, ones that really hold it back. The main one is Shirou. I don't think he makes a decent protagonist or plays his role that well. Sure he's a nice guy, but he suffers several of the classic signs of a weak male protagonist:

1. He tries to please everyone, especially the girls. Now how many times have we found from countless shows that trying to be nice to everyone hurts everyone in the end? Didn't anyone learn anything from Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien?!

2. He is spineless - to a point. He really does let other people use him subtlely or lean on him unnecessarily. For the greater part, Shirou doesn't stick up for himself or place enough trust in others. His desire to do everything himself is quite selfish and leads to overexposure. Even though he is the protagonist, he shouldn't take up that much screen time every episode. Such a thing really does convolute other characters to the point you wonder why some of them (Sakura and his teacher/minder) are even in there aside for the odd humour factor or babe factor. Couple that with his infuriating stubborness to try avoid being caught up in the Holy Grail War, he can be quite a pain early on.

3. He's insensitive to how other people feel - for the greater part. How Shirou can be oblivious to the feelings Sakura is obviously displaying for him within the first few minutes is beyond me. His continual lack of understanding of Saber, her desires and why she is after the Grail.

4. He gradually gets a harem. The yandere, the tsundere, the moe, the loli - is this really necessary? -_- Some moments between Shirou and Ilya seem so wrong.

Now that we have that out of the way, let's be fair though. Shirou is a nice person. He takes on a dangerous responsibilty with a moral approach, works well with Rin, he helps other people often, he tries to see the good even in the worst of people, he's committed and takes no easy way out - he sees a job/mission through. Those are admirable qualities.

Ultimately, though, this series relies heavily on Saber and Rin. Let's be frank, people. We're not here for Shirou. This is based off a h-game. We're here for Saber and Rin. Thankfully, they deliver. Rin is strong, independent, resourceful, clever yet also open, warm and firm when required - all qualities that are masked by her cute exterior. She is a refreshing change from the typical female characters anime is being flooded with these days. Saber is very commanding. Her dominant personality, commanding voice, strong yet sexy physique - they demand attention and they get it. She knows what she must do and she will do whatever it takes within reason. She also looks so damn cute in a raincoat! (see Episode 3) These two really take the stage and live it up. They truly are the soul of this series. Shirou is simply the one giving directions. Archer is also a welcome presence but you justget the feeling he wasn't used nearly enough. For a cool guy, he really deserved more time. And if you bother to do your homework on the original story, you begin to realise how much story was left out, especially concering Archer.

The quality of the animation is quite good. The two opening and the ending sequences were both well done. Action animation is far superior to what's been done for the last 2 years. Characters look stunning, backgrounds and objects are actually detailed and shadow/light/emotive effects are done well. The music used within the episodes are quite good although not that spectacular and the credit pieces are decent as well.

As for the story, it wavers in quality. It seems periodic. For a few episodes it's to the point and very revealing, then stalls for a bit before picking up again. The harem really didn't need that much air-time. The balance between action and talk in some episodes is definitely off. Later in the series some of the action scenes are a bit contrived compared to the ones in the first half. However, the last few episodes do deliver. When FSN delves into the history of the Grail wars, the backgrounds of characters, character bonding scenes - those really work. Yet you get the feeling something's missing. That some of the pieces of the puzzle were intentionally left out and that the full story wasn't told. Although, the ending works. It is a nice touch and appropriate way to end it. Although I feel Shirou was nothing near a worthy protagonist for this journey.

Good action scenes, good FEMALE characters, a decent story, mundane male characters, sidetracking that happens too often, a good climactic ending which ties up everything nicely. Fate/Stay Night may not be an epic, but it's a very nice journey, especially comapred to the utter crapness of the 2 years preceding its release.

Fate/Stay Night is a visually stunning series that fails to live up to its' own potential. While it is an enjoyable anime, I wish the story (especially the background and development of some of the characters) was given more attention.

The story focuses mainly on the Holy Grail and the War for the Holy Grail. However, this part of the story seemed rushed, especially at the end. Instead the story seems to focus mainly on the introduction of the many different characters and the development of the relationship between both servants and their Masters and more specifically, Saber and Shirou. The Holy Grail seems more like a reason to get all of these characters together and a purpose for them to fight than a truly intriguing story.

The whole "servant summoning" thing has been done a million times in anime, but in this anime it takes it in a more serious and interesting direction; servants are not merely robot-like mindless servants, they are former heroes or villians from ages past, who have their own goals and desires in the Holy Grail War.

I felt the ending was rather fitting for the series, but the final few episodes were a bit too predictable; especially compared to the many plot twists and the unpredictablility of the first half of the series.
That said, the characters were what truly made this anime enjoyable. The dynamic between the servants and their Masters is extremely interesting; especially the personality traits that are shared between the partners. This is shown especially in the two main pairings of Master and Servant: (and the first two introduced in the anime) Saber and Shirou and Toshaka and Archer. The conflict between Shirou's machismo (he constantly attempts to "protect" Saber from harm and thinks "girls shouldn't fight") and Saber's sense of duty and desire for the Holy Grail drives their relationship for the first half of the series; this conflict is contrasted with Toshaka and her abilities as a "great Master" to Archer.

The one problem with the characters once the series gets about half way through is that the sheer number of characters prevents development and screen presence for any significant period of time. We are left wondering as to the backstory for many of the characters, and for some reason some of the characters prominent in the first half become discarded or merely filler characters in the second half.

The animation is stunning and terrific; truly a showcase on par with the Ghost in the Shell series as far as animation goes. Not only the battles, but the regular scenes, including the dining scenes and school scenes, are all very fluid and detailed.

The soundtrack was good; good battle songs, couple good OP/EDs, and some good voice actors (especially for Saber, who played the "noble knight" role perfectly, and Toshaka, who played the "reluctant knowledgable ally").

I would reccomend this series; it is definately entertaining throughout, you will just wish you could see more of it: 24 episodes will not be enough to sate your desire for background storylines for the servants, especially Saber.

Fate/Stay Night is like a roller coaster ride. It has it's ups and downs. And at the end it tends to be an average anime.

Characters have good details and the battles are pretty amazing to look at. I'd say the battles were the best part of this anime since the animations look the best when they're fighting it out with another servant.

The OP and ED weren't eye popping and neither were they ear killers. The voice actors were pretty good and the german was fine with me. The background music was kinda boring and made me want to turn my volume down.

The story is pretty good. Shirou Emiya is an average boy who joins the Holy Grail War and gets a servant to fight for him. There are some boring parts in the stories, which made me want to skip a few episodes, but I didn't. The ending left with a cliff hanger and left too many hole open. It had a good pace and had some amazing parts too it. Good and Bad equals out in the end.

The characters in Fate/Stay Night were average.

Shirou Emiya - A boy who joins the Holy Grail War. Kinda stupid and stubborn at times, but in the end, he makes the right decision.

Rin Tohsaka - Shirou Emiya's friend who helps him along the way. She is very nice, but can be a little pushy sometimes.

Sabor - Shirou's Servant, a servant who will obey everything Shirou says and fight for him and protect him.

You might watch this again. I'm not gonna watch it again. There's a whole bunch of animes with super power females protecting a boy like Shakugan no Shana. Overall you should watch this if you like action animes.

First i will write down things i like in FSN. What i found exceptional is OST, i think its one of the BEST osts i ever had a chance to hear. If you ask me i think music in this show surpass quality of this anime for quite a lot. Kawai Kenji has amazing talent for creating dramatic sad songs, my personal favorites. Even if you don't have interest in watching this show i urge you to get your hands on OST, you will not regret it!
Animation keeps high bar and its obviously high quality. Characters are nothing unordinary, just another bunch of guys/girls meeting each other, being friends or enemys and sometimes after being enemy became friends. God i hate when that happened! But i have to say that Saber is nice mysterious character. What i don't like about characters is that they don't develope enough.
Same goes for story, it lacks development. Sometimes I had a feeling that "story" slows down and later on it just rushes to other point of the story for no particular reason. For that developers are to blame. Also nice fighting scenes can be seen.

In the end its music that gives that little extra, other than that this is just another little over average anime.
