| My adventures of retro-watching Gundam series continues with Gundam Wing, my second taste of a singular-universe Gundam. This is the one that started the trend of having pretty boys for the male lead pilots, ones that will attract a larger fanbase and create unpleasant tensions between heterosexual males and yaoi fangirls. The official art even has these suggestively uncomfortable themes, too! But in regards to the anime, Gundam Wing seems to be a below average entry to the franchise. With its nonsensical side-switching story, 3.5/5 dull lead pilots, an annoying (but hot, as always) bitch queen, another annoying schizophrenic lady, and the usual Sunrise contraptions, Wing manages to entertain those who are only in it for the character and mecha designs and battles, and will probably insult anyone trying to make sense of its politics.

| Start by watching the first 4-5 episodes of Gundam Wing. If you don't like those, then drop it. This isn't one of those shows that "picks up" later on, it's amazingly consistent all throughout. I personally liked this series a lot, but naturally, everyone has their own opinions and Gundam Wing isn't for everyone.
~~~
I had fond memories of Gundam Wing from when I was a kid. For some reason, I really took to the characters back then - I never forgot any of the show's main characters. I didn't remember what the storyline was about, just that it somehow made some kind of sense in my hyperactive 10-year-old head.
But after watching the more recent Gundam incarnations (Seed), I was kind of inclined to believe the Gundam shows were mostly boring, generic garbage. So I booted up Gundam Wing once again, to prove myself right. Luck would have it that I was pretty wrong.
It's probably a good idea if I go over my prefs on anime watching: over years (and many a gigabyte) of anime-watching, I've come to dislike most anime. Characters are usually fucking obnoxious morons that either go by cookie-cutter roles or are too primitive to be remotely interesting. Despite the Japanese societal norm for not sticking out, anime characters _always_ stick out. They try so hard to be "cool" they forget that they're actually people. It's kind of like the Japanese invented a whole other species of human just for the sake of catering to delusional anime.
So back to Gundam Wing - it pretty much does everything like a typical anime. It has all the traits of something I'd dislike, but it isn't bad at all.
It's because, despite having characters with somewhat generic and hyperbolic dispositions, none of the characters are every construed as "good" or "bad" - everyone's just doing what they feel is "right". You wouldn't believe the wonders that does in making the characters more human and believable in spite of their flaws. Both sides suffer losses and celebrate victories; it feels like a real struggle ground in reality. For once, the tide of the war doesn't feel predetermined in favor of the protagonists: you're actually able to sympathize for the antagonists if you want. The show doesn't try to force any set thinking, you're free to choose sides and make opinions as you please. Gundam Wing is one of the few shows that maintains excellent storytelling neutrality in this manner.
The storyline itself is pretty intriguing with a fair number of well-played twists and turns. It keeps you interested in continuing, even though it's not "edge-of-your-seat" action. The politics are grossly simplified, but they play out nicely and realistically enough that it's not a big issue - it is a shounen anime after all. There's no excuse for not being able to keep up with what's going on unless you happen to have the IQ of a zombified muskrat with fungi for brains. Nothing's too complicated or confusing here, au contraire, everything is pretty logical and straightforward.
Despite being old, Gundam Wing has the best Gundam designs of _any_ series; it's got some slick visuals laced with a plethora of fine-details; the combat scenes (particularly the Tallgeese segments) are damn nifty; and equally importantly, there are explosions left and right. I mean, half the time, the explosions are completely unjustified: shit that has no reason to explode just arbitrarily blows up. But it's actually cool in Gundam Wing. A lot of things (for example, the interfaces on computer consoles, the Gundam cockpits) are more simplistically drawn than in more recent anime, but that somehow gives the show a neater feel to it - probably because nothing was CG'd. (on a minor note: unlike with Seed, there isn't much noticeable recycling in the series.)
Sound-effects are mostly primitive BEEP BOOPS and the like, but that suits the series just fine. Similarly, the music score isn't Star Wars or Mozart, but it's good and suits the show's overall tone pretty well.
And, hm, that's probably enough of my rant. Cheers, enjoy the series if you choose to watch it.
| Gundam Wing is my first anime that I ever watched, and most possibly... my favorite.
In the Year After Colony 195, war is beginning the World has advanced to space and has set up space Colonies at the 5 LaGrange points at the Earths Atmosphere. Earth has becoming one United Nation called the United Earths Sphere Alliance. The Colonies are being opressed by Earths power and set up Operation Meteor, a plan to send 5 Gigantic Mobile Suits down to earth called Gundams.
| I think I've seen Gundam Wing at least 8 times, but until recently it was only the TV dubbed version and I must admit that up until that point, my main enjoyment factor would have to be the Gundam Pilots @__@
This time however, I watched the original uncut, subtitled Japanese version and actually enjoyed watching this for reasons other than stated above!
I'm not going to say I understood much of it and I wasn't sure whether to give the story a 5, 7, or a 9, so decided to go with the average of 7/10 ^__^
| This anime will either get you hooked in the first few episodes or you should stop watching. In my opinion, Gundam Wing had one of the most catching and interesting first episodes of any anime series which I have watched.
This anime is action-packed, and full of moral and political dilemmas about the nature of war. By the end of the story you will wonder if anyone in the story is good or bad: this is exactly what the writers want you to feel like. The writers, with Gundam Wing, are trying to convey the ambiguous nature of war and the ever-changing relationship of people to wars. This is done excellently in Gundam Wing.
The animation was great for its time but nowadays has become slightly dated.
The sound was the best part of the series: several catchy tunes and realistic battle sounds.
The story was interesting and the many plot twists kept this long series from becoming stale or predictable.
The characters were the true failing behind the series: Reelena Peacecraft becomes annoying very quickly, other characters are stale or stereotypical; the only interesting characters are Heero Yuy, Trieze, and Zechs.
Overall, I enjoyed this anime and it is a classic of which I have rewatched the episodes many times since it was first released.
| After finally getting through 49 long episodes with Gundam Wing, I can only say that I’m disappointed. I had really hoped to get served a better story this time. Come to think about it, there’s very little new to this series than to the older Gundam shows. My first impression of the series was however quite good. I believe that the best part of Gundam Wing is some of the first episodes. It has a great opening which gives an excellent impression of the series. Nice melody with the appropriate animation made it look promising. The next thing which gave a good first impression was to me the fact that this was a new time era. We were presented to lots of exciting characters, a new type of colonies, new Gundams or at all some other technologies in an alternate universe. I very soon got the same feeling as I had watching Victory Gundam; though there were a lot of new and thrilling stuff to start with, this series quickly became boring.
Shortly after episode 15, it took a lot of effort to get further. And so it stayed for a while, until the story finally got more interesting towards the end. The episodes in the middle weren’t fillers, but these were just totally uninteresting. At least if you’re not a Gundam-fan, then you would probably agree. All the time, the same words were said over and over: “We mustn’t fight! People die without any reasons out there”, and statements as:”We have to fight, to show the world how terrible wars are”.
The characters in Gundam Wing are fairly good, I will say. As a big exception in the world of Gundams, here it isn’t a boy with unique abilities which becomes a Gundam pilot and main character. Instead, a group of special trained youngsters fights for the colonies with their Gundams. These characters are all right. But also most other people we become acquainted with are okay and have good character development. Another plus in this show is the music. Both the soundtracks and openings/endings with its music are great. When there’s a fight going on, the soundtracks often help making an intense atmosphere. At all, I believe the music is giving a better impression of this show.
Overall, I have to say that I was mighty disappointed by this Gundam series. Especially with this Gundam show, I had some expectations since I had read some good reviews. It’s maybe better than some of the older Gundam series, but still I believe this one is mostly for those who love mecha. So if you don’t see yourself as a huge Gundam-fan, or if you liked Gundam Seed and want to try out Wing, you should spare yourself from watching this.
| I watched this show when I was a kid, and actually liked it. Back then, I didn't know what was going on. I mean, it was crazy! Giant robots battling each other with laster swords, random explosions everywhere, grenades being thrown around, laser scythes slicing the way through barriers of Mobile Suits, gigantic laser blasts piercing giant battleships. You don't know what's going on, but it was awesome! And a couple years later, after rewatching it, I finally found out what was going on. It was better if I didn't, because this anime is just full of so much contradictions, you're wondering why you decided to watch the 44th episode out of 49.
Let's start off with the story. The Earth is under the control of the Sphere Alliance. It was corrupt, so people decided to live in space who are referred to as the Colonies. The Colonies decided to sabotage the Sphere Alliance by sending five Gundams to Earth, destroying important buildings vital to the Alliance. However, the Gundams were tricked by another organization called OZ. The Sphere Alliance were on their way to pacifism, but OZ didn't like it, so through trickery, the Gundams got their hands dirty. The story might not be precise since I didn't know what was going on, and note it also changes so much after it.
All these things occur that don't make sense at all. So much betrayals that have absolutely no meanings, and often times contradict what happened earlier. Old groups die and new ones rise without much reason. This whole process continues throughout the entire series, that you're wondering what in the hell is going on. In fact, it goes through this rinse and repeat process so much, that it feels like at episode 49, the animators simply decided to stop it right there. The characters are equally as bad. Their personalities feel forced and emotionless. You could care less what would happen to them.
The only redeeming factor to this terrible show is the fact that it's Gundam. In fact, the only reason why I watched it is because mechas are extremely appealing to me. On the surface it's likeable, but it's much too politically contradictive to be enjoyable. The fights, much like Dragonball Z, are cookie cutter. The same repetitive fights are shown, just on different environments. But I swaer, the SAME exact action of course is repeated! Though the Gundams look really cool, but that's all. Their coolness fades away after knowing how dull and shallow their pilots are. The two opening themes however don't disappoint, as well as the entire sound department. But other than that, unless you're already a Gundam fan, this is a horrible way to introduce yourself to one of the longest line of series in anime history.
| This anime was purely mediocre. There was absolutely nothing special about it. It wasn't good, but it wasn't bad. It's something one would watch when they have NOTHING else, and want to kill time. If you crave for a mecha anime, then Gundam SEED is where you should go, not Gundam Wing. If you wish, you may read my full review, to learn the reasons behind my opinions.
| Gundam Wing is another well known Tv Series, which I believe it is planned to entertain young kids. It is because everything in this anime is not even fit in one piece. If it is a jigsaw, it should be a mixed of 2 picture and try to fit in one portrait.
Typically, Gundam represent the Cold War and Peace approach. Gundam Wing is no different, but it put their peace approach in a bull crap manipulative 5 years old kids fantasy.
The author do not even understand a basic term such as "Charisma", "Leadership", Government", and even "Education".
Well, you look at Relena school, then do you think the stupid institution as such can produce any student that can even pass GMAT, GRE, or any Educational standard for ordinary human being. I saw her school is nothing but a stupid afternoon tea club for idiots. The education is nothing except riding a horse (luckily they do not harass the horse, so it will become hentai anime), fencing, and chat. If there are any of this stupid institution, I will be the first one to reject to recommend them to anyone.
The world government in G.Wing is nothing but a full of idiot. This types of government is nothing but an old hags and old impotent men to chat about the world. I find this is radiculous, and their idiocies made a buffalo in a farm look like Einstien.
This anime treat leadership and charisma like a microphone in Karaoke Box. Just take anyone into the throne and she/he will become the most charismatic king and queen of planet earth. What a bull shit? If this shit is true then Tsar Nicholas II might not be killed by Bolshevik, Napoleon III, Puyi, Kaiser Wilhelm II, and Edward VIII might not need to be abdicated then. The author treat a throne like a musical chair, and even you put monkey on it, people throughout the earth will be on their knee and kowtow to that monkey. This is the wildest fantasy ever. you can ask yourselves that if your country ruled by Queen Relena, what would you do? I bet you will be the very first to join the Guerilla or what ever secret organization to overthrow that bull crap Queen, who have an absolute zero (-273.15) IQ and love to put her country into the war that will destruct the nation to ash.
| Without a doubt the most hated gundam series ever and i cannot see why.
The animation is old as this was released in 1995.Also they reuse the same battle animations over and over sometimes(damn lazy artists) but overall not too bad at all.
The sound however is great ,the sound effects are realistic,loud and exciting and the music is really great,fitting in with the situations in the story.The theme songs are especially good and are really addicting.
The story is alot of times underated and bashed by people who say they add politics to make it seem more complex.Complete bull,the writers could have put anything in the story to make it complex , what differance does it make if its a big drama,love affair,murder mystery or anything else?The writers simply put politics in the story to show a time how politics infuence the military and the world.Saying they put politcs in the story to cover up a shallow plot is simply ridiculous.Whats great about the story is that there is no real good or evil or heroes or villains.Everyone is fighting for the beliefs and views they think are right in a time of war.
As for the characters, they can get quite boring but each character still has their own distinct personalitys ,goals and views.
The series is long with alot of plot in the 49 epsiodes.So re-watch value is pretty high.it will also make a great collectors item, even though it is hated by many ,it is at the same time beloved by many.
Enjoyment is sky high here.Action and mecha fans will surley not be dissapointed,but may be bored when it comes to politics but thats also a good thing because now even political goons might have something to enjoy.
| I really love this anime!!! It's so much beter than for example gundam seed wich everybody seems to like so much. I can watch Gundam Wing like 50 times and I don't get bored. I saw 4 episodes of gundam seed and I felt as lively as a rock afterwards.
And what I lik emost, is that the main character isn't a push-over like some of the other gundam series.
And to those people who said that the characters seem to have lost their brain: wouldn't you loose yours if you were trained to kill sinds childhood?
I'ts a series that intrigues me. It has a political aspect, a filosophical one, a human one and even a humor one sometimes. What else do you need?
| I watched Gundam Wing when I was much younger, but the fact that the image of it remained in my head goes to prove it's got its memorable moments.
Animation:
Being a member of the Gundam series, the animation in Wing was impressive, consisting of many fighting scenes and other character-interaction scenes. There was nothing wrong with the graphics, and the art was normal.
Sound:
I liked most of the music for this anime (esp the insert songs and OPs/EDs because you feel that you're led by a rhythm or a nice beat. I watched the dubbed version of this anime, which was not extremely good, so I'm sure the Japanese voice-acting must be better.
Story:
In fact, the storyline was enjoyable because as a viewer, you can see many outcomes to Heero's quest. I had a good first impression on this anime because it had an excellent introduction. The middle was dragged a little, but then it began to pick up pace again towards the end. This anime had a satisfying conclusion that impresses me as an audience.
| Animation: It's not THAT good, but I've seen worse.
Sound: I liked almost all the songs. They have great rhythm!!
Story: It's amazing. It's about Gundams, yeah, that isn't new, but the story behind all that mecha thing, it's amazing. And obsessing too, 'cause once I started watching it I couldn't stop!! It's quite dramatic, also, because de the main characters are teenagers soldiers that HAVE to achieve peace once and once again. Their past it's very dark and sad, but they just keep fighting. It has action, it has drama, it has beautiful awsome boys...what else do you want, people?
Character: Beautiful and awsome, like I said before. Some of them are annoying, but the five main characters are lovely. They might be crazy, but I love them. Each one has his own personality and way of fighting. There's the cold one, the cheerful one, the sweet one, the quiet one and de sexist one... Hey, they ARE weird, bur once you know them you can't not like them.
Value: It's worth it, it is.
Enjoyment: 10!!! I had the best time watching it.
Anyway, Gundam Wing it's one of the best anime.
| With characters flatter than Lina Inverse’s breasts and a preposterous plot, Gundam Wing is quite…. retarded. It can almost be seen as a satirical Gundam, a Gundam poking fun at others in the franchise. I mean, come on. Pretty boys in mecha? Unbelievably moronic idealism? This has to be a joke, right. Oh, no. Gundam Wing is meant to be taken seriously. But I, the viewer, had a very hard time accepting anything in this anime. From the contradictions, hypocrisies, and “characters” that do things with the most bizarre explanations, Gundam Wing is perhaps the most ridiculous anime I’ve seen in some time.
Although the majority of Gundam Wing is inane, it is not without its good points. For one, it’s mildly entertaining. From naïve, innocent Quatre laughing insanely at the end of an episode to Duo (in all seriousness) referring to himself as the “God of Death,” I was nearly always amused. Sure, it’s for the wrong reasons, but at least I wasn’t bored. For two, this series has surprisingly good pacing. I’ve tried to watch a Gundam before and not five episodes would pass before I would succumb to catatonia. But I didn’t fall asleep not once. But then, I’ve managed to stay wide awake during the most notoriously boring anime and yet would snore through shows much better than this, so perhaps you should take that with a grain of salt. However, by episode forty (around the time when White Fang appears), the show becomes sluggish. Basically, the last nine episodes are dedicated to a long, drawn out battle in space. It’s saying something that tedium falls near the end (which is supposed to be the most exciting part.) Other than that, though, Gundam Wing is fairly easy to watch. The worst part of the show is definitely its infantile “politics.” “People must be kind to each other.” “War is foolish; ‘talking it over’ is wisest.” There. I revealed the astonishingly profound, deep, and realistic message that this 49 episode series has to say. And there's quite a lot of repetition in this (self-detonation, anyone?).
There’s no doubt about the supreme suckiness of the characters, particularly the five Gundam pilots- Heero, Duo, Trowa, Quatre, and Wufei. (Yeah, there’s a stupid number pun.). These dudes look as if they just got through auditioning for Weiss Kreuz. Or for a boy band….called the G-boyZ. It’s hard to take an anime of this caliber seriously if it involves pretty boys (one even wears his hair in a waist-length braid, for crying out loud) that pose and pout while blowing things up. Why not throw in a few sparklies? Or break out in a gyrating dance that would have tasteless fan-girls throwing their panties at their television? All five of them are extremely cliché and cardboard: the glorified leader™, the cheerful, optimistic one™, the brooding, silent one™, the innocent, naïve one™, and the misogynistic asshole.
The G-BoyZ’s cardboard personalities are only exacerbated by the fact that until halfway through the series none of them (not even Heero, who is supposed to be the main character) have much dialogue or screen time. Wufei, in particular, has about five minutes of screen time in the entire anime. Unfortunately, when more time is given to them they undergo some of the most forced character development (especially Trowa and Heero) I’ve ever seen. I guess I’m supposed to be convinced that one chick can completely change a personality in a matter of seconds. Then there’s Treize Kushrenada. For the longest time, I didn’t know if that was a name of a place or a person. By episode forty-three, I knew for certain it was a person’s name. That’s all I need to say. I don’t need to reveal anything more about how much of a pathetic character he is. Finally, Zechs Merquise may have been the most promising character the series had to offer, but anything redeemable about him was quickly destroyed by his laughably ridiculous reason for doing a certain thing. People, it has to be seen to be believed.
Ironically, the best characters are women. Lieutenant Noin, Dorothy, and Lady Une are the best in the series. Dorothy, in particular, is a foil to Relena Peacecraft’s (who earned a spot on my most annoying female anime character list) idiotic ideals. There is a great scene when the two argue over the value of wars. Dorothy asks Relena what would she do if her beautiful country were to be attacked… if all the nature were to be destroyed. Relena says that she’ll “talk it over.” Thank goodness our world’s leaders don’t have this philosophy. The world as we know it would be destroyed. Dorothy, unlike Relena, realizes that total pacificism is bullshit. Why Relena and the rest of the world can’t realize this is beyond me.
There are two types of mediocre: good mediocre and bad mediocre. Examples of anime that are mediocre in a good way are Saiyuki, Midori no Hibi, and Chance Pop Session. Examples of anime that are on the other end of the stick are Chrno Crusade, Elfen Lied, and Otogizoushi. It’s popular consensus among die-hard Gundam fans that Wing is one of the least commendable in the thirty-year old dynasty. Gundam Wing is my first real taste of the line; hence, I cannot compare. Fortunately, I don’t need to. It doesn’t take much to realize that this series is, well, mediocre, and unlike certain other anime, I don’t mean that as a compliment. It has every reason to be awesome. It’s stylish. It has a great premise. ...Yet the best part of Gundam Wing is only Duo’s braid.
| Why did no one like this anime? I found that it was truly fantastic. What I really liked about it was the highly enjoyable characters who were just plain fun. All had different personalities and all were sent to do the same job. Their ability to interact so comically with one another is what keeps you watching Gundam Wing. I have never seen the other Gundams, but I wouldnt compare this to any of them even if I did. It stands alone as a truly great Mech Anime. This one should be watched if you are really into Mech anime.
| Considering this anime produced in 1995, its animation is excellent (but don't expect it to be at Gundam SEED level). The only problem is some fighting scenes were repeated so many times and obviously. Also the sound is very good, I personally like its OP and ED songs a lot. The storyline is complex ad hard to understand at some certain points in this serries, but It 's also very good, inteligent. There's no particular bad character in this anime, they all fight for what they think right. There're also not much developments for the main characters, but still I liked all of them. Overall this is a excellent serries, who like robots, gundams as well as bishounen like me.
| I've waited for the longest time to review Gundam Wing, allowing myself to let the series rest in my mind before jumping to a rushed conclusion. Opinions of this series seem to differ from one end of the spectrum to the other--you either like it or completely hate it (some even go as far as to say this is the worst one of the Gundam series...I definitely disagree...). I've decided that despite the criticism this Gundam series has compared to most (Gundam X, Gundam Seed, etc.) I would still say that I enjoyed watching it (on about the same level as I did with .hack//sign). If you're a fan of the Gundam genre, by all means, this is one you shouldn't look over. If you're looking for a good mecha anime, this is also very good, but be warned, while incorporating action into its mesh, Gundam Wing heavily relies on dialogue and philosophical themes about war and pacificism. If you're already turned off by that mentality, it's probably not the series for you.
| With a highly political storyline and plenty of philosophical discussion, Gundam Wing tries to be the most complex and intelligent anime in the Gundam series. Like most Gundam series, Gundam Wing is an anime about war. The characters give long philosophical monologues about the nature of war and peace, all to often these monologues bore the viewer and resemble sermons more than philosophical debate. Despite these monologues, Gundam Wing is not a deep and philosophical anime, the storyline does its best to reflect the depth of the ideas expressed in the monolgues, becoming highly political as a consequence.
However, any real depth in the storyline is sabotaged by the horribly superfical nature of the characters. Each of the characters has a personality, but there is absolutely no depth to any of them and even less character development. None of the supposedly terrible tragedies that befall the characters or the often moaned about horrors of war have any affect on the behaviour, personalities or actions of any the characters. They are simply bishounen espousing a particular philosophical idea or point of view. Furthermore they're unlikeable and super powered bishounen at that. The battles contain none of the realism seen in other Gundam series, with the Gundams as invincible as their pilots.
Gundam Wing is not a bad series, the problem is that many of the other Gundam series are so much better. Gundam Wing lacks the realism and the excellent characters that are the strengths of other Gundam series, without compensating for this weakness in other areas.
