| OMG...
Where has this anime been all my life...
Story line, character development, progression, supporting background story..what else can I say. I love this whole series and wish there were more like it.
I felt for every character. Whether it was love, hate, friend, pity or laughter. I almost could have been another student in that school.
The whole story line really pulled me in. Please someone make more of this. Pleease!
If you are reading this and haven't seen an episode yet. Brace yourself. Ensure you have a couple of days spare to just devote to watching this. The first couple episode sets the tone and then hooks you. Thats what it was like for me.
I was in that school, I was in those school crowds when ever there was one, I screamed, cried, laughed and i fell in love with Rui and Doumyouji, and I also got angry with the characters...I truly was enveloped into the story line that is Hana Yori Dango.
If you're reading this and have seen another anime that is similar please suggest. I have seen Marmalade Boys also.
I am currently seeking DVD versions that are affordable to purchase for this anime.
I will always remember Hana Yori Dango.
I am humbled by the writers and all the talents that went into creating this powerful story.

| I’m still puzzled by this anime…very puzzled
Boys Over flowers is definitely not what I expected at all. A few weeks ago I watched
The entire series of Marmalade boy and when I saw the animation and synopsis of this anime I was expecting something in the same vein some lovey dovey love drama.
Well it was…and then some…and then some more.
Animation
I’m not gonna be soft on this, animation was poor but not terrible. With these pre-2000 anime’s the story seems to make up for the animation and for the most part it did.
Sound
One of the strongest points for this anime. With these drama anime’s I will avoid the Jap dub and go for the English dub to save time, well the voice actors were excellent as well as an obvious updated dialogue, some of the swearing and general conversations where obviously more today 2007 then 1996. General music was quite decent as well, funny “Happy Days” opening.
Story
This story is just one big addictive rollercoaster. As I said before when I started watching this I was expecting Marmalade Boy part 2, instead I got Marmalade boy meets GTO. When it comes down to it this is a shojo-love anime BUT unexpected violence, bullying, swearing and psychological warfare was unexpected, Impressive, Annoying and Addictive. I found myself hooked on this love story which was more realistic in most ways and surprisingly unrealistic in others…I mean when it was all over I really didn’t know what to say except “this anime will definitely entertain and frustrate”.
Character
Characters go hand in hand with the story, they WILL surprise you one way or another but I had to remind myself this is a shojo because being in this girls head all the time (Tsukushi) was really gonna drag this character rating down to a 1. Apart from her the other characters varied from funny to hateable, I will give them credit because these characters are realistic with their attitudes but as people they where mostly bad people…yes bad people when you watch it you will understand.
Enjoyment
Enjoyment…for me was high because I was surprised at the direction this story took. I was expecting people going on dates talking about how much they love whoever.
Well instead I got to laugh at people being bullied, people scheming/manipulating, hilarious dialogue and girlfights. Unfortunately there was a lot of love triangles and love drenched monologue so that brought the enjoyment down, epically coming towards the end of the series.
Value
Value is a very difficult one to call because although I was entertained and enjoyed this anime for the most part it was a lil stressful to watch (lol yes stressful). I’m not a shojo guy I just like real-life type dramas and this kinda fits that bill but I do think this anime
Was a bit confused in itself some of the things that happen really can shock/frustrate but in saying that I can tell this anime is one I wont forget. I guess what I’m saying is I enjoyed it overall, it just left me dazzled a bit….very unexpected!

| i loved this anime!! I liked the story, even if it was easy for it to get sappy it just didn't! sometimes makino was annoying because she didn't say what she felt like but right after she'd do something crazy and funny and that was ok ^^

| Despite its flaws, I was quite into Meteor Garden, which was based off this anime story. I was kind of hoping that the bad acting in the drama series would be fixed and repaired by whatever the anime had to offer and I would enjoy the story a little more. Instead, the bad acting in the drama was replaced by ugly animation and the characters became even harder to become accustomed to like. At least in the drama I felt really bad for the main female lead when she was being bullied. But in the anime, it was kind of harder to care about anybody. Instead, I felt kind of pissed off at her, some of those girls, and various members from F4 from time to time.
What's worse is she is practically in this emotional rollar coaster alone, which translates into the viewer having to bear the emotional burdens of Tsukushi, which are not very pleasant at all.
In other words, this is the ultimate shoujo anime. Full of self-monologue over romantic toughts, overreactive responses, overdramatic expressions, horribly complicated relationships, backstabbing 'friends' because of common interests, betrayal, etc.
The worst worst attribute of this anime was how far removed I was from this anime. It was so hard to get into the pacing of everything. I can't put my finger down one single aspect, but the bad executon overall just made this anime extremely hard to watch.
If you still want to try this anime, I would actually recommend Meteor Garden (the drama form) because the story is pretty similar for most of it, at least the more important parts. Furthermore, its more enjoyable to watch this stuff happen to real people. The whole anime form just was not as impacting as the drama for me. Hana Yori Dango also has its own Japanese drama which might be worth watching over this anime.

| So i started out thinking, why did i decied to get this series the animation isnt really my style but i heard it was a good romance series and im a sucker for that kind of stuff. I finished the series in about 2 days and though some stuff i will admit expected the ending was something to see, i really do like the series, and i feel though it could have been shortened i would not have liked it. There are so many love triangles in the series it makes me laugh at times. What i did enjoy the most was how much i hated the F4 in the beginning and how much i loved them at the end. There are many romantic moments in the series but i feel to truely appreciate the series you must be a fan of romance.

| Hana Yori Dango was one of the immensely popular shoujo anime in the fansub community during the mid-1990s before it was licensed. Being a sucker for the romance genre, I chose to check out Hana Yori Dango
The show's plot and characters flow like a soap opera for the most part as we are introduced to new characters and plot twists which either complicate or strengthen the main relationship of the show which is between Makino and Doumyoji. The show itself provides an interesting look at the subject of class and how both the lower and upper classes in HYD would view each other. Makino herself is a female protagonist who stands out from most heroines I've seen in a shoujo series as she is a girl aware of her social class at the high school and won't let people get away of judging her by class too easily. Some fans of HYD have considered her to be anime's most indecisive character as she continued to be conflicted over Doumyoji's feelings for her which seemed to annoy these people. I guess I seen HYD as Makino's journey in search of a way to deal with class and her complicating relationship with Doumyoji as she was cautious of how others would perceive her in an environment like this high class school. The show itself provides a good amount of depth to some of its main cast like the F4's Doumyoji and Rui who have their own pressures in life and are not as perfect as they seem.
But there were also some flaws I noticed with HYD's plot and characters. A good number of the characters who keep appearing in the show are one-dimensional throughout the show. Characters who fall into this trap are Makino's family, the two other F4 members, and the three rich girls who bully Makino. Also, some of the plot elements in the show are on the melodramatic side and seemed unbelievable. I would find it hard to believe that there was no one to help Makino in some of the occasions where she was bullied when there were some people who could have helped her out. Also like many anime shows based on a manga series, there is no final resolution to the plot of the show because the manga series was never completed at the time.
Animation wise, the character and setting designs had a soft color tone and were general in their design. Soundwise, the seiyuu to many of the characters were solid in acting out the emotions of their characters. For the most part, I was alright with the music which played out during the episodes of the show, but some of the situations where music was placed seemed unnecessary depending on the situation shown. The intro music to HYD really stood out for me because the 1950s music beat was different from most music I've heard in shoujo anime and I was intrigued by it.
Overall, Hana Yori Dango is a solid romantic drama anime which will appeal to those who are suckers for this genre of anime. There are not too many elements in it which make the show stand out from most other romance anime, but it provides 51 episodes of inner conflict with love and class thanks to the show's protagonist, Tsukushi Makino.

| This anime got me hooked after couple episodes :D (seriously, I was up all night some days watching it :P) But anime is much shorter than manga, I recommend everyone who liked the anime, you should read the manga. Don't read this if you don't want to be spoiled: In anime Tsukushi doesn't clearly confess her love for Tsukasa, but in manga, she does it :D And in manga there are many sweet scenes that doesn't appear in the anime.

| I had high hopes for this anime judging from the score and the positive reviews here on this website. Let me tell you, after 35 or so agonizing episodes of waiting and hoping that something will happen that would satisfy me, I got so frustrated >_< that I skimmed through the rest of the series then deleted it because I was so dissatisfied.
The love triangle was between Tsukasu a rich, snob, violent, bully and Rui a rich guy that isn't that open, more reserved type a guy, but definetely more respectable. I'm aware this anime is trying to do something different by having the rich guy get the girl or something and I am aware that no one is perfect but even so I just couldn't bring myself to respect Tsukasu, I was even hoping that one episode will come where I could learn to respect him. I realized this anime doesn't work for me and just pisses me off instead of the warm happy feeling I was hoping for and usually get after watching a good romantic drama like Maison Ikkoku, KOR, KGNE that would leave me wanting more.
I'm sorry to all the fans of this anime but Tsukasu just destroyed this experience for me. Even after he got some punishment for what he did to Jun's brother, I still don't find myself to respect him. Maybe if Tsukasu became a handicap guy after the incident I would probably feel sorry for him and maybe even cheer him on. The main reason I ditched this anime was because of Tsukasu. I believe the hero is a very important factor in any story. This hero just failed for me miserbly.
I think Tsukachi(the heroine) deserves much better then this guy. I was cheering for Rui and even this new guy named Jun. I hope this can be a warning to people for what to expect from this anime. I regret watching this and want my hours back wasted on this. If you are looking for some romantic drama avoid this and check out Maison Ikkoku, KOR, KGNE, Elfen Lied, Ah! My Goddess. Now time to go redeem myself and watch something else.

| This one really took me a while to finish. I saw the first six episodes ages ago, but only recently got the full series. When I got into it, the series turned out to be quite a bit harder to watch than I'd anticipated. The way the series comes across is high-school romance, but in reality especially the first half of the anime depicts almost entirely bullying, enforced by the class differences in Japan, and the psychological and emotional scars it causes are the dominant theme throughout the anime. Many episodes were really hard for me to watch because they were so full of harsh psychological violence. Especially towards the middle the story was so heavy that I didn't feel like watching more than one episode every once in a while. I wouldn't say there's any actual romance involved until towards the very final episodes. Whoever calls Hana Yori Dango a cindarella story probably hasn't watched it.
The characters are round and have complex personalities, and their relations are hardly stereotypical, so it was always hard to tell where the series was going; what you did know, however, was that it was nothing good. The story was really - apart from a few short moments - full of unredeemed misery on all sides. After a while I started to expect a new crisis to appear at the end of every episode - and was seldom mistaken. This somewhat ate my enjoyment, together with the personality of the protagonist, Tsukushi. She was a very likeable person, but so incredibly thick, introverted and undecided when it came to personal relations that it made me want to pull my hair out sometimes and yell "just say out LOUD what you're thinking instead of standing there like a dummy, and all will be fine!!!" ^^. Still, she had some cool moments too.
The ending was a positive surprise, both in being relatively positive and being surprising. So if you venture into the anime but feel like giving up after a while because there isn't any hope in sight, hang in there - it's not all bad.

| Hana Yori Dango is probably my favourite of all shoujo romances (set in a modern era). It's true shoujo in it's most undiluted form!
It's filled with wonderful characters, beautiful BGM and a wonderful angst filled storyline.
Fans of hard-core romance anime should love this, but it has an appeal that would entertain almost anyone ^_^

| The first thing that came to me was this is a very refreshing anime. But that's because it's made 10 years ago and in both, music, animation and storytelling very different from the most animes you see these days.
Animation: Considering it's done 10 years ago i would say it's okay, but you have to keep in mind the animation can't be flashy or whatever and has to be pale, cause this will increase the way of storytelling so at that point they did well.
Sound: Well I personally think the background music is very good. Classical Music that increases moods, just like in Operas. Only thing I can think of is "very maybe" sometimes it's repetitive, but if u've been drawn into the story you won't notice it that much. SO pretend you didn't read it! ;)
Story & Character: Absolutely the strongest point of this anime. Just after a few minutes this show will pickup a very high pace and only will slow down a little bit nearing the end. I reviewed after episode 5, 10 and 20 and just overthought about how much had happened after just so few episodes. But this is what keeps this story going! Very well done. Another nice thing is the characters aren't perfect. No I mean.. They are way from perfect and that's another strong point. There are so many points where I could slap the main character for wrong decisions compared to Doumyouji (but well.. i'm a boy so that's just natural). It even stays open who's the boy she'll be with in the end. Well, they give hints, but after those hints they create situations were it's almost impossible to get a good outcome and it looks like she's going with the other boy. Only thing I can understand that's weird is the ending, but two things make it acceptable and 1st is it would be really mindboggling if there was another outcome and 2nd it was a setup.. so.. i'm satisfied with it.
Conclusion: Definitely, unexpectedly become a favorite, but if u're going to watch it u should watch it when you have a lot of free time and expect nothing of it, cause after all it's nothing flashy or outstanding in ways they are today, it's just a great story etc. etc. You'll enjoy it whay more like that!!
Edit: Sad to see it isn't by the best 100 or 50, especially cause nobody gave a bad note!!

| This anime is the biggest under rated series of all times. This is by 10000000000000 miles the best anime novel ever been done. I just think a lot to find out something to say bad about it and I could it find it. This is the most inexplicable unnoticeable series of all times. In other words, why this anime is not famous like Chobits, A. Aoshi, and Love Hina etc?
Strong Point: Solid plot remarkably developed, and directed. The series has no disappointments, in other words is excellent in the starting episodes, development episodes and ending episode.
Weak point (not for me): The colors uses for the animation are pale. However, I like it because then you concentrate more in the characters than the esthetics.
Opening song is good, the overall music is average.
Well, if you like today’s anime novel like series but you want an even better series, then you have to see this one. This is by far the best of them all, so watches it, sees it and get puzzle and confused like me to why this anime is not in the top 10 and why this anime is not even been recognize as one of the best.
This is a classic.

| If Jane Austin was around to write anime, this would be it. Hana Yori Dango is an excellent shoujo anime, with some of the most unforgetable characters I've seen.
Make sure you watch this one; it's a jewel.

| Wow did i enjoy this series!! I was totally hooked on fushigi yuugi and thought I would seriously not find another one to surpass it. I did! Hana Yori Dango left it in "da dust"! Its got such a nice blend of comedy, serious-romance, and drama that will keep you glued to the tv. My eyes hurt from reading subtitles for so long. Saw it all in two days, just couldnt wait to see another episode...sure there were times when i scoffed and just wanted to smack Makino...( and just when i felt she NEEDED to be smacked...whew...someone did...what a relief....)but I held on cause I knew she'd pick who I was rooting for!! woo woo...The ending won't disappoint you, gives you a nice sense of closure. So to sum up...if ya like ROMANCE AND DRAMA...get yourself this series! ;)

| "Intoxicating", keeps u stick to the tv all than u can handle without sleeping or breathing.
The story is one of its own, very unique, I never seen a anime like this one, not even KKNJ compares to it, this one is like a new version of cinderella, but much better. Who could brain up such a great a complex story about a normal girl (makino is soo cute with sort hair) in a rich´s enviroment? I know the story is very long but also is very deep in content, one of the most importants parts is that all the characters involved in the story plays a deep roll in it, so the story is always interesting.
Too bad for the animation but still this series is a old one so u cant complain.
About the sound, lots of violins that sound just great with in the romance parts of the story, and also pianos.
I know that bits of the last chapter where very crazy to my taste (cant score the story with an 9.8 so i set it to a 10 oviusly), but still the rest of the series is just great, almost made cry in number 49, tell u what a stron-with-feelings story.
Old or not, this series u must see, made me belive i true feelings and a lot of girly stuff (made me whant to have a girlfriend right now!) that make´s me feel just great.

| Take every shoujo anime you've ever seen, mix them all together, add WAY TOO MUCH over-drama, then chop it up to 51 easy pieces and you got Hana Yori Dango.
This is your typical shoujo anime and then some: a love story (not really a triangle if you ask me) that pretty much go on and on with no end, with people who are hiding their feelings like the way 16 (?) year old do. A filler free plot (I actually think they've cut a lot of the plot from the original manga to fit to "just" 51 episodes), pretty fast paced, this is one of those shows that you pretty much laugh at them, instead of with them, yet - you cant help but keep going. The fast paced plot and fun characters (who I felt ALOT of them were underdeveloped) makes you keep going, and lets face it- you want to see how it all turns out. Which leads me to the ending: simply one of the stupidest ending I’ve ever encountered. When you get there you can’t help but just sit in front of the screen, thinking "what's so 'end-ish' about it"? Just when you think they got it going on with a decent ending, they "surprise" you and give you the most clichéd ending possible, brought to you by "stupid inc" -_-
The problem I had with this series is that it doesn’t know what it is. I mean, they take extremely stupid moments like eating caviar and make it into a dramatic, life changing event, while an almost rape scene goes by without almost a mention. I was also confused by tsukushi's character, who could be very timid at times, and just like that, out of the blue, she turns into a fluent talking, knows exactly what to say, giving the middle finger, cool person. It just didn't make sense. Animation looks pretty old for it's time, and the sound was pretty bad, music-wise and even the voice acting. Overall, this is a good, addicting series with MANY flaws, that you wouldn’t care about and keep going regardless.

| I have to say that I really enjoyed Hana Yori Dango on the whole. The series blends comedy, drama and romance very smoothly without seeming over the top or extravagant in its presentation. The animation quality was poorer than most series of it's time...but even so, that doesn't mean that the quality of the series in terms of it's material was bad. When I look at an anime series, I have an affinity towards substance, not surface. Hana Yori Dango indubitibly exceeded my expectations when it came to a quality plot, a solid set of characters, and enough charm and grace to keep me hooked until the final episodes.
