City Hunter '91 follows the franchise in a similar progression as the first three seasons-chronicling the usual cases that Ryo Saeba and Kaori Makimura handle as "City Hunter"-whether that includes posing as bodyguards, dodging bullets, eluding hostage situations, or in Ryo's case- dodging Kaori's 10 Ton hammer. If you're expecting Ryo to be less of a pervert than previous seasons, sorry to say that's not happening XD

The series plays on the same gags and humor points as the first three seasons, so those looking for something different in the mix or expecting actual story progression may be sorely disappointed. However, if you really liked or loved the first three series and don't mind the episodic progression, this one would be well worth the watch. It's also, like the third season, only 13 episodes, so it's very easy to go through in terms of watch/rewatch measures.

Animation values for a 1991 series are actually well done, and of better quality than the 80s counterparts, but still retaining the character design true to the manga. I can't say it ages well compared to series to date, but it holds its ground for the time it was created.

Music and BGM is also of the same quality and caliber of the previous seasons as well-"Downtown Game" by Gwinko is a fun, cute OP, and if you don't mind the style of early 90s J-pop female vocals, it grows on you as you watch. The ED theme "Smile and Smile" by AURA has a decent rock feel and good lyrics, but I didn't find it as memorable as some of the ED themes from previous seasons (i.e. "Get Wild"). Voice acting has been consistently well done (speaking of Japanese VA work, an English version has not be released for this series yet).

City Hunter 91 actually doesn't do much from a story development standpoint-but I found something to like in this series. Granted, by this point (provided you've seen other seasons), you're used to Ryo's mokkori outbursts, Kaori busting him over the head (among other things XD), Saeko keeping by the sidelines and her smart comments to Ryo, Falcon's usual add-ins, etc. However, this series continues to do well what it did in the previous seasons-build on character chemistry, and particularly central to Ryo and Kaori. It also executes its formulatic humor well, even with some of the secondary characters. And since this series is more character driven it ties in well with the plot line.

I liked this season, even with the small progressive elements of Ryo and Kaori's relationship-they're close and have good chemistry, despite how they have the tendency to go at each other (i.e. the episode where Kaori made Ryo sleep in the doghouse :P) The secondary characters, although they don't have much time for progressive growth, are enjoyable and enhance the value of each story. I personally enjoyed the stuntwoman's story and the ghost story as a few of my favorite episodes.

Overall, I would give a recommendation to City Hunter 91', but I wouldn't expect too much out of it past your standard City Hunter fare. If you want an extended look at the City Hunter franchise, but in a different structure and more dramatic, seek out Angel Heart.

Animation and Sound -wise there are hardly any changes from City Hunter Season 1 to 3. Thirteen more stories of Ryo Saeba saving the day for his preferrably female clients. There is one episode where Umibozu's eyesight gets worse, which marks the first development for any character in over 120 episodes of City Hunter. City Hunter '91 doesn't really have any new firecracker stories, and since nothing ever changes in City Hunter there is no ending. Instead of presenting 13 just average episodes, I wish they could have turned up the juice a little storywise, since it's the 13 last episodes and all. Of course.....there's always Angel Heart.
