| This is quite the underrated series. Key is an anime filled with mystery and plot twists. While the plot of finding 30,000 people to make one human may seem unusual to some to watch, this is an anime which will keep you watching to figure out what happens next with its characters and plot. You will just need the patience and interest to get into the the mysteries of Key: The Metal Idol.

First if I hadnt seen the review below suddenly popping out in Animenfo reviews page I wouldnt have known that title even existed. So I express my deepest gratitude to the reviewer.
Key the Metal Idol is yet another series for patient viewers and if you managed to last till the 13th episode, the 14th and to a lesser extent the 15th episodes will totally test your patience. So if the first episodes didnt impress you, except the marvelous opening animation and music, then skip this title and look for something more light-hearted.
The first thing that impressed me were the haunting visuals. It helped also that from time to time some puppets are depicted that make the atmosphere even creepier. Then there's the main character, Key, who's perhaps one of the scariest and visually striking characters I saw. Had I seen this anime at a younger age, Key's face would have been engraved in my memory forever.
The other characters were also memorable, especially Sakura. Watching her I thought whether her character inspired Evangelion's creator for Misato.
THe other characters, notably D, were also memorable, though they act rather as supporting cast since their background isnt sufficiently explained, especially that of the bold midget in 16th century clothing.
The music and sfx were also fitting for the depressing mood and the Japanese as well as English cast were good. The English version of the OP and ED theme was even better than the Japanese.
The story is unfolding very well and coherently for the most part with every episode offering a new revelation and the 14th episode summing everything up to my relief since I began to feel confused, while ep 15 focuses mainly on action and a slightly dissapointing finale that leaves a lot of questions unanswered. But if it didnt the anime wouldnt be classified as weird. But even then it requires patience and concentration, since it makes the viewer feel tired rather than relax and escape from reality having some fun.
Overall a depressing but at the same time mind-teasing anime that is oriented at the fans of animes like Lain and Texhnolyze. Considering it was made 4 years earlier than Lain it has its own merits and quality too.
Recommended. The DVD boxset by Viz Media has some issues with picture quality but as a bonus includes the OST of the series and has some interesting info and an interview with the producer.

| "Key the Metal Idol" is a show that grows on you. The premise is a somewhat simplistic story of good guy vs bad guy, with robots and guns and the like, and a quite standard anime design to the characters. But it all pretty soon transcends the genre, due to some quite remarkable qualities:
- The enigmatic Key herself seems so frail and almost autistic. And this petite character is easy to sympathise with. Looking constantly helpless. But how looks can betray...
- The story gets more and more complex, episode by episode. During my own viewing of the series, the pause button of the DVD player was made good use of, when things happening called for a moment to sink in. A modern take on Pinocchio and Prometheus, with the 20th century idol industry phenomenon center-stage. In the end I think the though-provoking story made sense.
- The soundtrack contains some very good music. Both the opening and the ending songs are gorgeous. And the finest moment of all comes in the final 15th episode...
All in all, a genre series way ahead of most of its peers.

| This one was a lot more dark and had a fairly disturbing storyline than I thought it would be, which had some very unusual set of characters. It gave a great setting with the animation, seiyuu and music. The opening theme was quite astonishing for an older series. It was good to watch overall, but had a few flaws in some areas. From her role in the story, she was supposed to be a character that can’t naturally feel any emotions like all humans. I kind of found that hard to believe as she was given that certain believable role; because she was at times showing those actual emotions that aren’t supposed to be given during those moments unless it gave a real good valid importance to the storyline, whether when those expressive facial were shown as admiration, sadness or fear. And as a robot, it would’ve been somewhat better if the person who had made her could programmed her to be a little smarter, instead of just giving her too much curiosity of the life’s surroundings around her and the social deviances that tried to harm her. The only thing that convinced that she was a machine was her lifeless voice, her way of her talking in third person, and the slow moving expressions that was portrayed as the only given meaning to her presence. The other characters who guided her such as Sakura, the otaku guy Tataki, and the bodyguard Wakagi were mostly the necessity, since Key was that kind of character who had to be the most ungrasping character with no understanding except on the objective as being a pop singer for the purpose of having 30,000 “friends” to make her become “real”. It made itself feel like another certain fairly tale, which made itself vastly gloomy for its own concept.
On the good side, there were a lot of these characters that tried to corrupt her with their own intentions from the extraordinary persona that Key possesses, such as the video people, the priest, D, and the corporate leader that hated robots were part of the conflict of scenarios. Hikaru on the other hand, on which I have no idea what were his true interests were with her, but he was probably the most daunting and craziest character that I thought they had in the entire storyline. I really wished I seen this a long time ago, since it did made some impressions on my viewing. It was surprisingly fun and freaky to watch, especially when watching the whole set during the middle of the night. I would be glad watch it over again though, mostly on some parts I wanted to see if I've missed something on it. Probably re-watch it for a long time from now.

| I found this to be quite boring. The first 7 episodes did nothing to intrigue me except for my wondering what exactly the professor meant about Key finding 30,000 friends.
As the story proceeded, it didn't help that Key was entirely lifeless and had no appeal whatsoever. This, is probably what makes Key the Metal Idol so crappy in my eyes. The lack of any strong characters in a story that has seemingly good potential into developing into a great bang.
Because of this, and the crappy first 9 episodes, I didn't finish it, and I just searched what the ending was like. I feel that this anime was just too boring as a whole, with only the beginning as intriguing as one hopes that something will happen.

| Key series saparate to 2 season. Ep.1-13 can be describe as TV season, then 14 and 15(120 movie) can be say as 2 movies. They explain everything on ep.13 so if you think you know everything, you're not. And finally we'll see Key in human form and a nice ending for all the mess.
Since I judge animation by the rip I accquire, I must say Key animation was ok for dark anime. I give sound 7 stars since they kinda avoid all the good song in the series and someone always inturrupted the damn concert. The last song that Key sang wasn't that great either... it should have been a good wake up song for the audien to regain their soul.
I'll review the story in differnt window since it would spoil(lol you had already spoil by reading this review) you guy.
I really enjoy this but you have to listen closly on ep.14 VERY VERY important that you understand it all. Pause and read, it not a coward to do, I even watch the explaination scene 3 times! to make sure i get the real story.

| And I thought Lain was difficult to understand. Pfft. Key the Metal Idol is a show that I am at a loss to describe. I feel like my brain needs a half hour cooling down period just to begin to process everything about this series. It is complex to say the least. The main draw is the labyrinthian storyline which is both involving and maddening. While I understood the basics of the plot, I feel like I barely scratched the surface in terms of comprehending the finer points. Whether this is the fault of the show's ambiguous presentation or my own mental limits is anybody's guess.

| I think the biggest obstacle for me to like this series was Key herself. In the beginning I found her character pretty dull and while other characters were mostly uninteresting too (Sakura was annoying), I thought the series a lost cause. But the more Key showed conflicts between her robotic and human self, the more interested I became. The other interesting character was the snake-priest. Liked the little guy and his conviction.
So Key was getting more interesting and the story was interesting and mysterious enough. But there was some weaknesses: Ajo's secret experiments felt pretty weird and they went downhill during the series. In the last episode it was just plain old nuts. Episode 14 offered also something bad. I found the explanation for gel... not good. Hard to clarify it any more. It was just not right. Good thing we got a throughout explanation, though.
Animation is ok, considering the age of the series. Music was good, especially the lullaby in the last episode was beautiful. Key has a sort of balance of horror that keeps it from plunging in the mediocrity or rising to be a classic. As a whole package, it works just fine.

| Just watched the whole thing in one session. For me, it was a bit of a mixed bag.
First the good part, the story is great. There are some major turns and twists that will keep you watching. You'll be able to understand parts with the scarce information you get but not everything (until the last 2 eps, those explain everything). The only remark on the story is that the ending was a bit corny and rushed. The sound/music are also outstanding. Especially the intro caught my attention.
And now for the bad part, the characters : there are many, they all have different motives and from half of them you're not always sure on which side they are. These are good things I know ;) but the major flaw IMHO is that characters are not really fleshed out emotionally. Only the main character, her friend and the relation between them have a bit of depth but not enough by a long shot. So I had a hard time feeling emotionally touched and attached and that partially ruined the experience for me.
The animation is average (made in 1994, what did you expect ;) ) but that didn't really bother me. I never care much for animation anyway. A good point is that it does really fit the show : dark and gloomy.
Conclusion : I watched it for the original and interesting story but the characters didn't really 'reach my heart' (yeah, corny expression, isn't it ;) ).

| I’m human not because I have eyes and a size B bust, but because I bleed and cry when I do so. Or rather I did when I was eight but anyways Key the Metal Idol is a morbid outlook on what makes a human....human. Biological components alone can’t fit the bill. In a genre where tits, ass, and big breasted robots with bad fashion sense reign supreme, Key the Metal Idol is perhaps the best robot show anime has to offer. But again, take a good, long look at the competition.

| Nice animation for it's time.
Key the metal Idol kept you guessing through the whole series, this I found pretty special.
They 2 90 minute specials at the end are a bit dragging but they were very good. It explained everything and kept the story at an easy pace, very nice.
It's intreging to see how some people saw the future in 1995 :)
I can't recommend this to anyone, since it lacks some occasional humor for the balance, but if you want a good story this is one you should grab.
If you like Lain, then check Key out.

| Damn it too much detail!!!!!! How the heck did they get away with this on PBS?! Oh well I liked it.
The story was good and wierd, and had a very much Bladerunner like feel to it, though I probably should watch Bladerunner again. Despite the slow pace I found it enjoyable. Some eps you can skip if you want, but in my case I always watch the whole thing, no matter how painful it can be at times. More akin to bitter sweet if you can watch the whole thing.
The animation is dated and this seems like one of those animes that doesn't really withstand the test of time too well.
The bottom line is if you like wierd things and good story then this is worth a try. If you are only interested in aesthetics then don't bother given today's technology. It maybe the best 7th Cavalary Wargame out there, but not all of us want to re-live Little Big Horn.

| There are so many mixed elements to this anime. Robotics and android themes aren't really in my preference but Key made the anime interesting. The music is a mixed bag where you get an awsome haunting intro and some other tracks were just plain bad. The priest dude really freaks me out. The animation really does it job and does it with satisfactory results. The story is decent in that it presents something new (at the time it came out). Watch it, you'll either love it or hate it, it's something to watch. But without anime to hate, which are the ones to truely love? Give this one a chance.

| I must say, I enjoyed this anime very much. It's just the kind of thing that interests me. The biggest problem it has, however, is that it goes way too slow. I might have been able to forgive this flaw if the ending hadn't been so loose as well. I can't say it really has much of a happy ending because of all the meaningless death at the end, but the story had some interesting twists that made it, in my opinion, a much better than average series.

| Guys.... this anime is from 1994!!
So do not overjudge the animations!!
The Story is awesome, the charas are very good too and the music creates a great and authentic atmosphere.
For those who like Lain:
WATCH IT!!! This goes for all who think the story is most important as well!!

| Key the metal idol offers to you quite some heavy psychological drama.. the pace of the series is quite slow, but if the viewer has the patience to tune him/herself in for this pace, Key the metal idol is a very interesting cybertrip that grabs the viewer to the screen for the entire time it needs to present a flash of its cold, dark and still so innocent reality..
