| I think the overall reason that people give this anime lower reviews is because of the fact that it revolves around a 12-year old "playing with dolls." And honestly, I'm not the type to fall head over heels for these sci-fi types...
What got me first started on Angelic Layer was actually the manga, which, in my opinion, was much better at grabbing my attention at first sight. With the anime, although they do remain true to the plot, the side stories are altered a bit. Also, Icchan gets a lot of his funny scenes changed or cut out, which results in a somewhat more serious atmosphere with the anime.
However, I am very satisfied with the anime series still. It's a story about state of the art - yes, dolls - that fight on the Angelic Layer. In my opinion, this is a toned down version of a mecha-type series, which I am thankful for, because dolls are far more attractive than robots. Anyways, the plot carries on with several new characters and their individual stories with Angelic Layer; although, to me, one of the best parts of Angelic Layer would be the fighting.
Angelic Layer is one of those series that have a very nice, somewhat, magical, effect, and it's really not as childish as it might seem at first. However, as a precaution, I have to tell you, that, if you decide to watch this series, please watch the first 3-5 episodes in their subbed format and not in the English-dubbed versions; since the voicing is a little crude in the earlier episodes...but it gets better.
So, please put this series on your anime-to-watch list!

| CLAMP works are normally quite good, but when aiming their intentions at testosterone, their anime noticeably stumbles. Like Chobits, Angelic Layer is a bit too cute for an audience known for drooling over titles like Naruto and Bleach. Chobits, however, had the fan-service to offset this. Angelic Layer is about a preteen who plays with dolls. In the same way that X TV is a “shoujo for guys,” Angelic Layer is a shounen for chicks.
Angelic Layer is a pleasant enough series; for one, it has likable characters. Mitsuki, the lead, is your typical heroine-bubbly and determined to conquer the odds, no matter if those odds are so high against her. Her rival, five-year-old Hatoko, begins as a promising character, but quickly dissolves into the everlastingly loyal sidekick/best friend. It certainly doesn’t help matters that her character is also cause for disbelief being that she also happens to be the most mature character in the series. That, of course, says something about the other characters, who are either used as mediocre comic relief, half-baked love interests, or underhanded contestants that appear for an episode or two.
….but Angelic Layer is still a pleasant enough series; for two, it has a story that never put me to sleep. The subplot concerning Mitsuki and her mother was surprisingly well-done and perhaps the best part of the series. Some of the duels between the dolls were actually genuinely gripping; granted, I was never sliding off my seat with breathless anticipation… and this is because the outcome of the battles are predictable and quite simple. In a nutshell, Mitsuki always wins. Always. The anime is trying to say that anyone can be a champion, even five-year-olds and prepubescent girls the size of a wet rat. However, the show seemed to have forgotten that five-year-olds are, well, five-year-olds, and the wet rat just learned the game. It would have been much more interesting to have the rat occasionally stomped on.
….as it is though, Angelic Layer is a just another nice and inoffensive anime. The characters are paradoxes and the anime fails miserably when trying to portray the dolls as if they're alive. The story won't bore you, but it won't excite you either. If you have nothing better to do and really like anything CLAMP, then you may want to give this a look. Otherwise, watch something else.

| After reading some of the other reviews before watching this anime, I had to admit that I didn't actually had that high of an expectation for this. In the end, it was actually quite interesting. The animation was inline with most of the other anime that I have seen, the sound was pretty good as well (I don't know why some people complain about it), the characters development was good (though a little fast) and the story is okay.

| *sigh* Where to begin...okay, so I watched the first 13 or so episodes of Angelic Layer, and then didn't watch it again for a year. Why? Because although it was cute and had good intentions, it was repetative to the extreme. We all know Misaki will ALWAYS win no matter what, or if she loses, it's only to a minor opponent and she'll learn a valuable life lesson in the process. Snore. Not even Sailor Moon (my personal childhood TV show) is this straight forward. But one day out of pure boredom, I slipped in the next episode, and wow. I was floored. The next episode was a character episode. It was so dramatic and amazing, and I had no idea the characters had that kind of depth and emotion. Sure, they all kind of had basic personalities, but that episode I watched put them into a whole new platform. It was no longer the repetitive battle-of-the-week junk it was before.
So I vowed I would finish Angelic Layer sometime soon, and I finally finished it!! And wow, did it fall back into it's groove quickly after that great episode. I'm just gonna throw this out there - the Angel battles are SO fixed. It is impossible that light-weight Hikaru manage to defeat so many superior opponents with her low level of skill and low-power attacks? The ways she won were ridiculous. But maybe that's just Hajime no Ippo rubbing off on me...you know, in boxing, there is a division of weight class after all.... And should people who helped create of Angelic Layer REALLY be allowed to compete in tournaments? The tournament rules were just flat out stupid.
But enough about all the discrepancies in the Angel battles. The actual plot was just as cookie-cutter. You know who will win, and you know that of course each character that enters will have some cheesy past attached to them to help people sympathize. Angelic Layer was really shameless about this. And the main characters seriously got short-changed. After the amazing episode, one main character changed completely who she had a crush on! I really don't think I read into the situation wrong either...since she basically proposed to her former crush...and since the characters are so young, more that once I thought to myself "All aboard the pedomobile!!" (You've all seen that image of the van with a doshin pic of Sakura and Tomoyo from CCS getting it on right...? Right...?)
On the bright side, this never tries to disguise itself as anything intellectual. Sure, cheesy emotional, but it never pretends to be anything higher than entertainment. And the music is great, including the BGM, and the seiyuu do a wonderful job, especially Kikuko Inoue as Shuuko. And while the character designs and animation are poor, the backgrounds and layer designs are great. So, if you're looking for a mindlessly good time, Angelic Layer will not only deliver, it'll hook you with it's straight forward approach. I mean, i watched all 26 episodes, so I didn't dislike it that much...the repetitive nature does tend to get on your nerves is you're like me, but hey, it's cute, it's CLAMP, it won't hurt to try it. And it'll probably tug on your heartstrings somewhere in there.

| After watching some difficult and mind-boggling animes like Evangelion, Lain, GITS (planning to watch FCLC too) I decided to make a break and give a look at a simpler title. Angelic Layer was on my list since I'm a fan of CLAMP's work, mainly their mangas. But I didnt like the manga adaptation of Angelic Layer that much, so I thought that the anime would turn better. In comparison to the manga it is better indeed (manga was just 5 volumes afterall), with more characters, more battle-dolls, more character background info and more action. The characters look more adorable than the manga too.It has also amazing animation during the battles and nice synthesized BGM. I'd say the same for Magic Knight Rayearth but I havent seen the TV series since I liked the manga.
One has to bear in mind that this is a kids show. So in comparison with other titles it may look mediocre, but when compared with other similar kids shows it is definitely better than Yu-gi-oh, Digimon and Pokemon and maybe in the same league as Megaman and Shamanking (since I watched Angelic Layer in Japanese I'm referring to the Japanese version of the other shows respectively). It competes quite well.
In some points it outscores them like in length. 26 episodes are perfect for a battle cartoon aimed at kids. If it were 50+ episodes it'd become very boring.
Also animation is better than similar shows too. Most of CLAMP's manga adaptations were animated by Madhouse Studios. But this time another popular studio, BONES, took the job and they did extremely well. If they can do complex animation as in Wolf's Rain, Rahxephon, FMA, to name a few, they can make a kid's show excell in animation too. Rememer this is a 26 episode kids show so dont expect highly detailed 3D graphics, or every character in the crowd moving in full motion etc. The time the battles start I really felt that Angelic Layer was a league above all the rest of the current batch of similar animes.
In the first episodes the Layer backgrounds are the same but later the battles take place in settings such as a ship, temple ruins, beach, plains etc. The final battle is outstanding too. The dolls literally dance on stage. I havent seen anything similar.
The visuals are even better than the CLAMP manga and that says a lot. Nice and colorfull characters, perfect for the genre.I wished BONES would animate other of CLAMP's work too.
The music during the battles adds to the tension. When the characters dont battle music is typical kids show and it gets on my nerves. But I like how they fused the ending theme with the last seconds of every episode, something few animes tend to do.
Characters are much better than the manga. Especially Misaki's mother. In the manga she hardly appears and is very hesitant. But not here. A couple of moments the characters can be very funny by making adult-oriented jokes. But since this is a kids show, though they're lovable I wasnt impressed that much. I watched the anime mainly for the battles. I liked the couple were the girl would beat the boy and also the flashback of each character before every battle. In the ending I wasnt moved at all. I also didnt like the various relationships that develop. Reminded me of CCS, the anime adaptation of which I avoided. Sometimes I thought the dolls were better characters than their instructors overall.
As for the story, it is very linear but to make it more interesting the manga outcome is the complete opposite of the anime.
For an anime aimed at younger viewers the battles are outstanding and sometimes on par with better and more serious action titles. Except that here the characters dont seek bloody retribution and everyone turns happy in the end. The winner even apologizes to the loser. It shows how a game should be played fair. Kids will appreciate the message. Adults learned that no game is played fair and everyone tries to cheat, a long time ago.
Recommended for younger viewers, CLAMP fans and those who'd like to feel kids again after having watched more serious titles.

| First time I saw this was almost 4 years ago, but I couldn't enjoy it much because of the dire quality of the subtitles. This time around I treated myself to the new ADV boxset for £28 and watched the English language dub (which is pretty damned good!) and thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.
Having read through numerous other reviews, the one thing I seem to feel that noone else did was; I WANT AN ANGEL DOLL *lol* I kept thinking how cool it would be if all my dolls could come to life like they do in Angelic Layer ^_^
This is a very sweet anime about self discovery, overcoming your own subborness and self doubt and what true determination can achieve and I loved it!

| A thoroughly endearing anime! This show uses a very simple premise very well, dolls that can move (controlled by a person's mind) and have real physical fights. Great idea! However, this is used as the gimmick to get you to watch the drama that is Misaki's life, as she battles through the rounds so she can meet the champion.
Animation was very well done (except for some scenes where the characters looked a little weird!) The angelic fights were very well realised, sometimes exceptionally well. Also, I thought some of the scenes in the later eps were beautifully done, with good lighting. All the characters had a unique look to them, as well as the dolls.
I really like the OP and both ED themes to this show! The BGM was also well used throughout and helped to increase the drama most of the time.
The characters are well realised in theis show. A few relationships (or potential) bubbled away and got good closure. Motivations were well explained - even for characters that appeared just in one episode. Misaki was sweet (maybe a tad too nice?). Icchan and Ogata had a good vibe going (comic relief). I thought Hatoko was a little creepy to start with - perhaps a little too young?
I really enjoyed the story. Some might say that it was predictable... I liked the way it played out and I did get caught up in the story. Especially the emotional ep 25 (will I admit to having my tears literally jerked??) There was also a very satisfactory ending (for a change)!
I really recommend this anime to anyone who likes good drama/comedy/action. It's one of the best ones I've seen.

| This anime is the anime that convinced me that CLAMP can make very good animes. This one is a butt kicker of a anime series with encouraging characters and touching storyline. This anime have something for everyone.
This anime without a doubt is an action series, thus this anime must have very good action and it does. The fight scene are very well choreographed and well thought out. Though i was sometimes annoyed by one hit death blows but that wasn't a big problem. There's plenty of eye candy for every action lovers.
The animation is also very good with its fluid action scenes, rich colors, and cute character designs. Thought the qualit of animation isn't anything that standsout from the rest it gets the job done well.
The music is also a standout. it's opening and two closing songs are among my top anime song list and the background music is also very outstanding. The music really goes above and beyond in this one.
The characters in this anime are very encouraging and show depth to them. All the duelists have their own reason why they fight and it is explained before, during, and after the battle and we come to understand them and sympathize with them. thought this anime had a gigantic cast i didn't feel like it at all. this anime spends a lot of time on their characters and it shows.
What I find really amazing is the story. The story is about a girl who's trying to do her best in everthing (and may be too well). and just things happens to her that makes her to play angelic layer and it feel very natural and exciting. The plot is simple yet it is engaging enough to get its viewers into the anime.
However one of the biggest flaw of this anime comes from its storyline. This anime is way too predictable. By second episode i can gurantee you will know what will happen in this last episode. and this is a big problem cuz it can lose the viewers interest.
I found Misaki's seiyuu work not that pleasing. i just thought that it was many times bit annoying.
This is by far among the best CLAMP work along with CCS and CHOBITS and it deserves to be watched. This anime have something for everyone with its exciting action, touching storyline and interesting characters. Make sure you don't miss this one.

| A nice mix between cute dolls, and fun tournament-style battle scenes. I found this anime to be quite heart-warming at times, and definitely enjoyable throughout.
Misaki isn't that impressive. She's just the usual young girl who has to deal with the problems of doing her best, dealing with the needs of her doll, and other social pressures as a result of being part of this activity. She doesn't have a specific personality trait that makes her stand out, other than a caring heart.
However, the way they executed the Angel Layer is very laudable! I found myself really getting into all the fights and when her "Angel" started to lose, I always felt a deep urge to cheer the comboo/team up. One of the strongest parts of this anime is how Misaki takes care of her doll. She shows so much love and care for her doll that it really shows up in her dolls performance. Of course, the doll reflects her own personality and all the anime has to do is convince me that Misaki has a strong will.
Angelic Layer's story is really straight-forward. In general, there is one goal and one possible outcome. Misaki becomes the best (duh?). Although she encounters hardship along the way, it is very predictable that she bounces back. She doesn't really seem to go beyond the usual disappointed or frightened stage of failure as it really IS aimed for the younger audience. In general, it follows a straight time-line.
I guess my main qualm is that it violates the "show, not tell" style of performance. For example, you only get to know Misaki trough her performances at the Angelic Layer. It is hardly introspective at all (aimed at younger audiences) and I just kind of sat by passively and waited for the action scenes. The Angel Layer fights were awesome and gradually heated up, but everything else is not memorable.
It is kind of similar to the style of Card Captor Sakura, although not as cute. If you liked CCS, and want a little more action, this would be for you.

| This anime is soooo cute!! Started watching this because I liked the title, but finally found myself addicted to it. Ok, seeing dolls fighting seems a little childish, but the way the doll's fought and the action was just marvellous. You could just feel for hikaru and misaki and hope they would win.
Storywise, its actually quite simple, about a child whos just an amateur but turns out to be a prodigy in the game.. but well, they made it exciting enough.
The music was lovely, sounded a bit Disney-like though =p, and I loved the ending theme "The Starry Sky"
The characters were lovable, most were little girls but they were really adorable.
Overall this anime is really enjoyable, recommended for all ages.

| A truly addictive, and surprisingly touching anime from Clamp. This just may be their best work. A cast of appealing characters, phenomenal fight choreography, and a dose of melodrama make for a very fun ride.

| It start out well, but then it keep falling down the pace. The beginning was very good, come with mistery fighting game with ton of undiscover things. Too bad that 'undiscover' things wasn't that interesting, and it turn out just to be average story between dauther and mother kind of thing. Also the story had no climax, no intense either, everything just flow like a wind.. and before you know it, it already end. The fighting scenes ain't too bad, they got a couple of cool moves with cute dolls. This anime might focus on female audiens, but male(or other) can enjoy it too. We all know we love cute thign... and this series is full of cute dolls :) Overall, this anime is just your average typical anime, nothing outstanding or standing out. Btw: love the OP/ED 1 theme :)

| This is a somewhat typical "personal achievement" anime. It is quite short compared to other outstanding genre representatives, such as Hikaru No Go, so it seems they speed things up too much in the beginning. But eventually they manage to mantain a believable rhythm and after a few episodes you fall into the pace.
The plot has quite some interesting tweaks aside from the main story. Unlike, again, Hikaru No Go, where everything is, well, about Hikaru playing Go :) , here there are at least two or three bigger side stories and many little ones. Every character gets their place in the spotlight and gets at least a short insight into their motivations and past.
I disagree about the plot being predictable. I started watching thinking Angelic Layer was a bit lame (it is, in a couple of places) and too rushed (in the beginning) but frankly they did very well and everything falls into place quite nicely.
I liked the OP and ED and the soundtrack is also decent.
There are some downsides. Misaki's voice is a bit annoying sometimes, but her 'naa!' sounds are very amusing on the other hand. Kudos to the voice actress for this one. Tamayo (and some of the others) is just a repetitive support character in the first half, but then they start to get involved in interesting, unexpected ways. Some people may have seen some relations between the characters developing a mile away, I didn't and the suprise was very welcome.
Some other bad spots include the fights, as far as realism is concerned. It's not much, just a bit of a slip-up here and there. Such as the dolls being a bit too animated (face mimic, act suprised when hit), I mean come on, they're supposed to be dolls not people. And there are some places where a fighter doesn't do the obvious even when should. Such as one time when they had the chance to end it quickly and throw Hikaru overboard but instead she sends her crashing against the mainmast. But you can put all this down to some psychological reason and get over it, so it's not a biggy.
This may not be an outstanding series, but it definitely falls into the upper class. It's got personal achievement and life lessons, it's got drama and also humor. The characters are believable and natural, and they manage to surprise you.

| Angelic Layer is a bit predictable. Young child prodigy turns out to be perfect for playing new game. Let's face it many animes are like that. However there are many things around that basic plot to keep you watching. First of all you want to find out why Misaki's mum doesn't live with Misaki.Plus about four mysterious characters who watch her matches. Then there's the hyginks of Ogata and Icchan to keep you amused. The love triangle of Tamayo-Koutarou-Misaki for the people who love shojo anime. Though boys still might like it.
The one thing which wasn't so good was it got a bit soppy in the last two episodes but it kind of had to as there was an emotional climax and it was better it was dealt with properly
As I said I loved this anime it has humour, mystery, character development and cool fighting.

| Well, I discober this anime seacrhing information of Clamp's work, the creators of Chobits, X or Tokyo Babylon ( I was interest in that studio because that that three works are excelent at all ). When I saw this manga i try to buy it, but for my fortune, there was an anime, and then I start to see this anime.
The animation is excelent, the design is wonderful and the edges are smooth like the animation. The sound track is Excelent, I love the opening ( Be my only angel ) and the first ending. The story is maybe infantile, but if you saw this anime at all, you will that the story is really mature ( a girl whose mother felt ill without knowing it, and who finally will meet her playing Angelic Layer ). The character are cute an lovely, and they are worked at all ( them personality is exceptional and very interesting ).
This anime is very enjoyment, the story is good, maybe it seems an infantile anime series, but when you will have see it at all, maybe you will understand what I'm trying to say ( it's like Chobit's story, it seems simple, but at the same time, it's deep at all ). It's not essential for an anime-fan, but I recommend it, it's very interesting ( maybe there are some boring chapters but almost all have a lot of action and funny scenes ).

| Angelic Layer is a touching, cute and a funny anime. This series shows that you don't need violence, people dying or sex to make a great show. The plot is solid, the first half introduces Misaki to the game learning the ropes as she goes along. The second however is dotted with various fillers with the various relationships between the characters, mainly Tamayo and Kotarou. Overall this is an outstanding series, really good fun and explains quite a bit about the characters. Nicely detailed and very colourful, a great show for anyone of all ages.

| hmm.. quite an interesting anime, it has its ups and downs, basically if you want a decent action anime this is right up your street, as some of the fight scenes are very nicely chorographed. However, some of the fight scenes may confuse you, you'll probably be asking 'Why did that happen?' and 'That doesn't make any sense at all!' For example, Hikaru may take about 100 punches to the face and still stand but when she attacks with one move or something, the opponent dies. (slight exaggeration)
Anyways, this anime is not strung along with its oh so predictable storyline. The characters are either annoying pests or good fun characters dependign on hwo you look at them. The main character is annoying as hell though, almost every fight she gets into, she has some kind of angst, e.g. 'I don't know how to fight boys' or 'I don't want to fight you at all' etc.
But the main bulk of this anime is the action, and it works. Don't expect most of the action to make sense and you probably enjoy this.
Overall: 6.5/10
Grade: C+

| Angelic layer is the good version of pokeman. Fighting dolls sure beats fighting lightning rats, psycic cats, and the overwhelmingly powerful magicarps! Angelic Layer is a very predictable series from episode 1. Starts with a random kid finding something new. Then deciding to play it. Then kicking everyones ass. And eventually ends up being the best in the word... Am I the only one that guessed who her final oppenent would be within the first 3 episodes?^.^ Overall it was a good series. Despite how simple it was, it was indeed a entertaining.

| Angelic Layer was my first anime series that got me officially addicted to anime in the first place! So first I have to say a thanks.
What I liked most about Angelic Layer is of course the clothing design. CLAMP's designs never seem to disappoint me. Another thing is basically the relationships developed, in other words - the character development.
After watching it again however, it wasn't as exciting as I brought it out to be the first tiem I watched it. But oh well, it's still enjoyable to watch.

| Okay, I've finished watching the anime, and I must agree with you all. The first half of the series is simply *genial*. I've enjoyed it at all.
But now I've just finished the second half, characterised with a new ending image sequences and a tangencial change of the story developement, a little bit of "weirdness" and too much "emotional" charge, that's why I have to reduce a little its value & enjoyment.
But I've enjoyed it at all, so: Go go Hikaru!!
