Like most of Hayao Miyazaki's works, this one also contains a message that includes belief and self-worth. At the age of 13, witches are declared self independent and are released into the world to find a town, a job, and to fend for themself for one year as training.

When they get to said town though, it's harder done than said to do their witch training for one year. Because, basically, they're thrust into the world on their own. And humans aren't very warm and compassionate when they don't know what they're dealing with.

The most memorable part of Kiki's Delivery Service are the characters. Heart warming and intensely adorable Jiji makes a smile appear on your face. Kiki's reactions could be related to and understoood. Some of the characters who are nice and warm will be liked and Kiki's friend, Kopori, is a determined and straightforward character. :] However, the only reason that I did not give this score a perfect 10 was because they weren't developed that well. Although it would be great to know more about their backgrounds, it doesn't detract from the overall anime.

The "story" in Kiki's Delivery Service is subtle (and pales in comparison to the characters) and short. Throughout the first half, we understand that Kiki is slightly scared or anti-social. And in the second part, she shows self doubt and loses part of her witch abilities. Although it's not said for sure, I think that the message that Miyazaki is trying to show is similar to what the painter said: Just take a break when you need to and when it's right, it'll come back to you. Don't force it but accept it wholeheartedly.

In the end, Kiki was a relaxing and smooth ride. If you want to watch another of Hayao Miyazaki's extraordinary films, this one is definitely recommended. :]

Kiki's Delivery Service is one of the most wholesome pieces of entertainment for children. Provided the easy going charm is enough to keep them interested, Kiki's coming of age is an inspirational story of her triumphs over some universal problems that people, especially adolescents face.

Kiki's Delivery Service is introspective, and because of the plot's general uneventfulness outside of Kiki's internal ups and downs, this movie may be a little boring for some. Kiki's personal development, her slumps and her triumphs take center stage, and fill the story in a straightforward, and cohesive manner. As far as actual happenings go in the plot, there are only a couple of significant events. As a character development centered story though, it flows well.

Kiki is arguably the best child oriented character in any animated feature including western films. We see her abundance of personality in her bright and cheeky demeanor early on, but the emotional roller coaster she goes through in this movie allow her nuances to show through; from having trouble fitting in with city kids as a country girl, to accepting the warmth of others, to dealing with a personal slump. The tremendous breadth of her character is expressed as the many different elements of her personality are brought out through shifting moods and the wide spectrum of emotions she experiences throughout the film. The universality of her personal problems, namely, difficulty fitting in and a frustrating slump, help her cause for empathy. Who hasn't had writers block as a writer, a lack of inspiration as an artist, or a poor performance stretch as an athlete? In the end though, it is how genuine, how realistic her reactions to her setbacks are that make her at once endearing and inspiring.

The supporting cast does little other than support Kiki's character development, almost like objects she interacts with. Their perspectives don't seem to be of great importance, and perhaps that's as it should be, since the roles they play are rather minor. None the less, the cast around this Kiki centered story is charming, warm and fun.

Kiki is solid in both the visual and audio departments. The soundtrack has its share of full orchestra pieces, but it mostly consists of old European town-ish accordion centered music. It's pleasant, and fits with the setting, but never elevates the drama in any of the scenes. The animation, relative to Ghibli's most famous stuff state side, lacks textural and background details, but has the same attention to detail in the way the characters are animated. Small things, like misstepping on stairs when in a hurry, slipping on leaves on the street, tensing up when nervous; the little stumbles here and there give the characters another dimension of life. We take this for granted with Ghibli, and also most western animation pieces, but in the context of anime, it deserves mentioning.

Kiki's Delivery Service is not for everyone. The story is a far cry from the epic plots of Spirited Away and Howl's Moving Castle. It opts for something much more easy going and light hearted. The central character though, bears many similarities to her more recent counter parts. If the nuanced and adorable female protagonist's personal development sounds like a good enough skeleton for the plot, and it's perfectly fine with me, you may find that Kiki's Delivery Service is up there as one of Ghibli's better films.

Kiki's Delivery Service is an unbelievably high quality anime movie made in 1989 which made me feel surprised that it isn't better known in the western world.

The quality of the animation is simply unbelievable. Kiki's Delivery Service looks a decade ahead of it's time. Like Spirited Away, there are numerous extremely entertaining background movements that considerably increase the viewing enjoyment.
Every background and character design is highly detailed, and even the slightest motion is animated to full extent. Kiki's Delivery Service must've been ground breaking when it was first released.

In the original Japanese version, the theme songs sound good, but do not fit in very well with the storyline. However, the songs are nothing short of magnificent in the American Disney version. The background music in Kiki's Delivery Service are pretty average; as are the voice overs, but they are by no means bad. In fact, most of the sounds and music don't sound very good as they are overshadowed by the excellent animation. The theme songs in the American version are very noteworthy, however.

The first few minutes of Kiki's Delivery Service might be a bit off putting for some viewers. However, the storyline greatly improves after that. The story of Kiki's Delivery Service is charming, with bits of drama and excitement thrown in. It is, in my opinion, excellent for the younger audience and pleasant to watch for everyone. Although I found the ending to be a bit abrupt, it by no means damaged to overall viewing pleasure of the anime.

Not a lot of character development happens in this movie, then again, it wasn't necessary. In addition to having a good cast, the moods and actions of most characters fit their age quite well, which was the most important when it came to this movie.

First released in 1989, Kiki's Delivery Service should have been a breakthrough. The quality of the animation is simply astonishing for something made at that time. Apart from that, Kiki's Delivery Service is an excellent family movie. In addition, American version also comes with wonderful theme songs. I would recommend it to everyone who is after something pleasant and entertaining.

This is the first Hayao Miyazaki movie that I watched. It was pretty okay but it lacks some aspects to make it enjoyable, so I can say that I was bored with it. Now I wonder if all of Miyazaki's works are like that, if they are, I might not watch them as I don't like boring shows.

The story is about Kiki (that doesn't sound good in tagalog), a teenage witch who must leave the town where she grew up and look for another town to live in and be independent from her parents. She finds one and started to work in a bakery, but she also has her own business called delivery service (you can compare her services to that of DHL)

If it weren't for the japanese dubbing, I'd say that this movie is not made by japanese because the concept of witches riding a broom is very western and I'm sure that there's no such thing as those in japanese folklore. But not only that, also the character designs are like those of old Walt Disney movies, so I really felt I was watching american animation.

In order to appreciate the Studio Ghibili movies better I decided to watch them in chronological order. I started with Castle in the Sky, then Grave of the Fireflies, then Totoro and now this. I'll watch the rest soon.

As for Kiki's delivery service, sure some things were often repeated as in the previous movies but some others were introduced that made the movie more innovative. I have to say though I liked this more than Spirited Away or Howl's Moving Castle. I wish I had seen this on cinema like I did with the others.

What an enjoyable film! Even though it was squarely aimed at children, I believe that anyone from ages 3-103 could find something to enjoy in this. The atmosphere woven in Kiki's land is so magical, and her spirit is so indominable, thi makes for the perfect family film. Anyone that has an open mind can enjoy this film on at least one level.

okay
time to review another masterpiece by Studio Glibli!
at first, i thought "god this is gonna be lame, a witch with her cat on a journey..."
then "well, Studio Glibli films are always good to watch"
so i watched it, i was like "Wow! this is awsome!"
the story drags on quite alot which is a bit dissapointing.
i got really bored of the music, though since this isn't an Action film, well, obviously the music or the film was gonna drone on.
Jiji the cat is awsome, when i found out that the dubbed was the voice of "troy maclure" or something from the simpsons, i cracked up! :D he has no enthusiasm at all! god he's funny!
since this was made about... 17 years ago, i'd have to say that i mistaked it for being made in 1999! or around that time anyway
if ur a huge fan of studio glibli i suggest u watch this film
but if ur a fan of action (like me) i suggest not, it gets boring after awhile. there's quite alot of character development, when kiki loses her magic and has to find a way to get it back.
overall, u should have a shrewd idea by now... not the best glibli film, though.... it's heart warming.

I completely agree that the film was heart-warming, but that's all the film was. It was alright at first, watching the characters endure absolutely no obstacles, but after wards it became downright boring. I can easily say this is the worst of all the Studio Ghlibi Films. I couldn’t stand watching any second after the first 30 minutes or so.

Kiki’s Delivery Service could have been a lot shorter. For something so bland, they didn’t have to stretch it out. It could have done well with some drama and mystery- a decent story and even the smallest ounce of evil- but the film didn’t have anything threatening about it! It was predictable, slow paced, and just so vague.

The ending didn't conclude anything. What was the point of even making it? I’d love to know the answer to that.

If you really want to watch the film, watch the trailer instead. You’ll get the whole movie smushed into 1 minute- its much more entertaining and fills you up with the WHOLE story- yep if you think the trailer’s story is incomplete- the movie’s story is incomplete, so it works!

I’m just glad I didn’t buy this, because it would have been such a waste of money.

As with all Ghibli films, the one word that usually sums up the whole experience is 'magical'. Kiki's Delivery Service proves that a lil hard work, a beautiful setting with vibrant characters (and a lack of a story =p) can make a decent show. I wouldn't say that this is my fave ghibli movie but nonetheless something you can warm to on those cold depressing nights =p

Good solid stuff, I would recommend everyone to watch Studio Ghibli’s animes in original Japanese dub, they really are better than other dubs like English and also Chinese dubs.

Kiki's Delivery Service is typical of Miyazaki Hayao’s work. Great animation now and outstanding for its time. The sound is light-hearted, as well as the story.

Story is quite simple, a little witch girl leaves home to find a town of her own where she can stay and work, the rest is just an adventure, although this one does not span across a vast area, just the town (more like a city) and the outer regions. This made it a quite nice anime for me.

Since the story was so simple, what made it good were essentially the characters. Kiki is adorable and so are most other characters, somewhat reminded me of The Little Rascals.

If you are searching for something exciting, this shouldn’t be your thing. If you’ll settle for something is bit laid back for the most of it and very adorable characters, look no further. An anime that has withstood the test of time without a doubt.

When you notice some of Miyazaki's films, he seems to keep that certain distinctive trait of what determined qualities are being taken for when making it highly imaginative from the ideas that forgoes on the early stages of life, what finds more than the magic that is mostly impressive to those tales; and at the least, what makes it highly remarkable with the storyline from "Kiki's Delivery Service". The animation on this was greatly done, with the whole background of the city as she was flying around within the scenery. Very true to the essence of how it was making the music so very amiable to the added effect. A delightful plot that starts off with a young girl who became fully independent on her thirteenth birthday, and by her personal family’s tradition, she must search her own living for a town that she can adjust to and learn from the new life that she would embark for, as well as searching for a life that can make her own tasks productive to the people‘s benefit. As she travels together with an oddly skinny cat named Jiji, they set forth through an experience by finding out what she must learn out there to make her own magic gain goodwill to others. The story progresses from finding her new home, in a wide and lively town she wasn‘t used to; compared with the family’s place that she grew up with. It also wasn’t as easy as she hoped for when she was trying to meet new people from one place to another. When she did met some people at a bakery, she was on high hopes of creating her own business by delivering various things, and was adjusting well later on. Her own first delivery though, was probably the most hilarious part of the story, and that Jiji seems to be in a fix when she almost had her first delivered assignment unsuccessful, as her mistake turns out of meeting another person named Ursula, that understood her motivations and troubles when the time those abilities that she thought were once lost. Speaking of Ursala, after saving Jiji when being the replacement on the black cat doll, another hilarious scene was taken place when Kiki explained that she met Ursula, and Jiji thought that she was an artist that did nude drawings, and Kiki called him an idiot. The other characters weren’t bad either. Osono and Tombo were also given great roles, with Kiki’s obligation of being helpful when meeting them, and thought of them as a consideration while staying; moreover, enjoying her stay with those people as she spends more time with them that she would thought they are more than her acquaintances. I guess it does wonders on how a film can turn out to be something fictional, and yet fascinating at the same time.

Sehr empfehlenswert!

This light-hearted Ghibli film continues to bring out the excellent animation and stories that it has been for so long.

Even though this film is from 1989, its animation still rivals some of the best we have today. The scenary is just beautfiful, and the depth that Kiki brings out from the background when she is flying is simply amazing.

The seiyuu is done superbly, the voice of Kiki really makes you think that she really is 13 years old. And the sound effects are all really cool, especially when the birds are squeaking at Kiki!

The story is about the rite-of-passage of Kiki to become a witch when she is 13 years old. She has to endure all the challenges presented to her and solve and gain strength from them. It doesn't really matter that Kiki is a witch or not, but how Kiki is reacting, becoming who she is as she is growing up. The downside is that there isn't a real antagonist in this movie, which might make it a bit boring to some.

The movie mainly focuses on Kiki, and it has done a great job potraying this little girl, but the side characters are really awesome too, although some of them are a bit stereotypical.

This movie is really good for a family to watch together, especially parents that have kid under 15 years old. It has great graphics, it has a lot of lessons to teach the kids and it is fun to watch!

I've watched just about all of Studio Ghibli flims and i was never disappointed by it. And I got the usual excellence on this flim as well.

The storyline of this anime has some potential for real disaster. i mean there this real girl just trying to be better at what she does. There isn't any evil man trying to stop her nor are their any real conflict with other characters. this could drive the story into basic standstill.

But for some reason everything works in this anime. This anime portray this life of little witch girl in such a beautiful and poetic manner i fell in love the moment i started watching it. every action is portrayed in extreme detail and every dialogue contributes. I never thought that the life of little witch could be this vibrantly portrayed.

the animation is great. it has amazingly beautiful colors and detailed design. everything is designed to such detail you will feel like you are actually in the city with Kiki flying on her broom. there's nothing about the design of this anime that fails to be excellent.

Character in this anime is also very well done. you will know exactly what they are about the moment you see them and they are all attractive and interesting. Every character in this anime seemed to draw me in completely to their personality and i love every single bit of it.

i loved the music here also.

The story is fun and lyrical. it is done in episodic way where Kiki does her task one by one. It could feel like it have some issues with the flow but it didn't really jump out at me until i watched it for like my 10th times.

This anime have a everlasting value to it just like all the other Ghibli animes. you surely won't be disappointed by this anime if you are looking for a fun, beautiful, heartwarming, and great anime, which is what we all should look for

Great family anime from Studio Ghibly as you would expect. Imaginative story, great music and likeable characters. It seems to be a typical Ghibly production, not generally my type of thing, but I enjoyed it nontheless. Not really much to add apart from that.

A truly delightful family film, and one I can happily recommend to all anime fans.

Its lacks a bad guy, much of a structured storyline and the back of the DVD describes it as containg 'mild peril' - but this film never becomes boring.

Basically telling a sweet fairytale about the trials of a girl named Kiki trying to adapt to living away from home for the first time, Kiki is mainly a story aboout growing up, and learning to deal with all the teenage pubescent horror that entails.

It's difficult to put what is good about this film in to words(other than basic things like the quality of the animation) as, on the surface, this film seems to have little substance to it. It's nice, pleasant and family oriented - and for once that isn't some kind of sarcastic criticism.

Down side? The new english dub, whilst brilliant in many ways (Kirsten Dunst in probably her best acting role ever, as well as a splendid turn by the sadly missed Phil Hartman) it meddles horribly: the cheerfully nostalgic sounding J-pop themetunes are replaced with vapid American ones, and - by adding a line at the end of the movie - the dub effectively alters the entire metaphorical meaning of the film.

Bastards.

But - yeah - I heartily recommend this film to young and old alike. Watch it in english. Watch it in Japanese. Then watch it once more for luck.

Quite good technically. Lovable character and music. But something was amiss. The latter half was not quite what I thought emphasized the message well enough. Almost falling to a lull for the second half of the movie. But as usual from Ghibli, everything else was great.
