This movie was my first direct contact with the animated version of Crayon-Shin Chan in Japanese. While it was not so bad of an experience, it was not exactly the most entertaining thing I've seen in my life. For those who are unfamiliar with this style of comedy, it basically relies on this extremely active and energetic kid and his really 'rude' and 'childish' with no regard to anyone else's behavior.

In this movie, we get to see Shinnosuke's family attend a 20th century museum. The general plot is that a couple wish to bring back the feeling of old Japan, where the adults of the 21st century can return to their more youthful days. I found this idea and storyline to be extremely unique. Basically, the couple somehow brainwash all the adults in the area with the 'smell of the 20th century, in order to revive the nostalgic feelings of their past and to erase the difficulties and the pains of the future'. However, Shinnosuke and gang manage to evade this group and in an indirect way, fight to preserve the future.

If you haven't encountered Shin-chan style humor, it is kind of hard to describe it. The animation is horrid and the parody is kind of direct and hard to understand if you have no past experience with it. The storyline isn't too spectacular and the comedy is a bit different than the usual. So, it would difficult for me to recommend this movie to anyone. Story-telling wise, this movie is done well - a good progression of events. Although a bit short in dealing with the characters and a bit repetitive with the kid's behavior, this movie has some sort of charm about it. To those who are familiar with Shin-chan, this movie isn't anything particular special. The beginning chase scenes were fun but the wind-down was kind of anti-climatic. Overall, the main appeal of this movie was its subject matter of the story. The whole idea of the nostalgic past is quite a pertinent theme in humanity's history, and they dealt with it in kind of respectful and integrated matter.
