(based on the first 6 volumes. The series still continues)

I felt really disturbed sometimes while reading this manga. It carries a very pessimistic message. It takes place in a world where ethics as we define it has collapsed and human nature is just for experimental purposes. For the sake of security and efficiency in the secret services in Italy (and presumably the rest of the world) little girls (preferably orphans or accident victims) become cyborgs, their memories are erased and they are trained in weapons and martial arts to become the perfect assasins. Each is attached to a tutor and is devoted entirely to him protecting him with her life.

And thats the most disturbing thing about this manga. The children's minds are exploited because of the psychological complex they develop due to their attachment to their tutor. Literally there is no way out for them. Every reaction they make even if it is considered normall is regarded as a malfunction and they are send to correctional facilities or simply erased. They can kill even little children and smiling while they do it. Or sing children's songs.

Also the time the manga takes place is one of heavy political where far-left and far-right groups seek to split Italy in North and South. It is up to the Welfare Agency to prevent this, with the aid of cyborg adolescent girls.

Of all the girls I liked Triela the most, especially in her encounter with the hitman Pinocchio.

The manga has a little of everything. A complex story, nice characters, action scenes and some touching and disturbing moments.

A very thought-provoking title that will influence you to the core. Its simplicity sometimes is quite terrorising.

If you liked the anime I'd recommend the manga too.
