I watched this film not so much because I'm a Lupin III fan, though I saw a couple of episodes of the classic TV series but because I was interested to watch Miyazaki's earlier films.

The film is regarded as one of the most valuable anime films and a must watch.
It is interesting to see the character design that would be the main feature in the later Ghibili films.

And the movie's technical merits are certainly not to be ignored. Animation is very good and actually many more frames per second were used than in the next films of Miyzaki. There is also the classic humour of the series, though a little toned down and the characters are great and their animation as well.

The settings though are the films best moment. Necessary to add that at that time (1979) a great animated film from France titled "Le Roi et l'Oisseau" was released and it could have influenced "The Castle of Cagliostro" in that field.

the film features the classic Lupin-style car chases, action, finale, Lupin's and Fujiko's unique disguises and a memorable ending. Too bad the two other members of the group dont get much screen time.

A classic movie and a must watch for Miyazaki fans.

There are lots of Lupin anime, but I think this is probably the most memorable one aside from the series. You don't need to see the series to enjoy this almost 2hour movie. If you have any idea what Lupin is then you will guess what kind of anime this is. In fact the car chase scene, the stealing part, the goofiness of the anime its all there.

I am A Lupin III fan, though I am a fan I still rate fairly on what I think it deserves. "Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro" is a pretty good movie, though it seems in my opinion that it simply seems to be a little overated while looking at some of the previous reviews. This movie was made in 1979 and people seem to think that Miyazaki Hayao created Lupin, he didn't he only directed this movie which he did a pretty good job.

Animation - The animation is actually good for the year it was made. It is not very sketchy at all which is good because I watched some mid 1980's anime and a lot seems pretty sketchy. Not much of any sketchy parts here. The movement allowed for the characters are really good. The colors were a bit strange compared to the series' characters' I mean Zenigata had red skin.Thre is pretty good shading though not a wholelot of vibrant colors. Overall the animation is an 8/10 for the year it was made in.

Sound - There was a lot of catchy music in here during the movie which fit right in with the scenes. The opening music theme was pretty theme it fit what was hapening in the opening animation. The voice was actually pretty deceent with fitting the characters.

Story - the story starts out with Lupin and his right hand man who just stole money which happened to be funny money. I'm not going to spoilthis so its going to be a short description. :upin finds a ring theat belonged to the princess and tries to return it to her while helping her not get forcefully married. The plot was pretty good for an hour and 40 minute film.

Characters - The characters' were all there from the TV series'. The characters were pretty average. Also Luopin and Zenigata joined forces for a little bit which was pretty cool character developement in that part.

Value - If you are a Lupin The III fan like me watch it or buy it. The rewatch value is average, it's woth a rewatchbut nlt just right away. The collection value should be owned by Lupin collectors, simple as that.

Easily one of the best animated films ever, The Castle of Cagliostro is a joy to watch.

Hilariousley funny with physics-defying, explosive action, Cagliostro is absolutely perfect family entertainment.

Because this is Lupin, and Lupin is great. The strength of the characters is what makes this film so great, with Lupin and Jigens cheeky-sodness and daring making every scene great fun to sit through.

While the storyline is basic, telling a princess-captured-in-tower storyline a million miles away from your standard tits-and-treasure (a term i've coined myself. I hope you like it) Lupin fare, it works all the better for it. Theres more of a focus on lighthearted, family action and the desire to keep the plot clipping along at a fast pace, rather than slowing down for ponderous fan service shots.

The music? Brilliant (the Lupin III themesong in full orchestral mood is just excellent). The animation? aged but still beautiful.

As a final note, one reason I rate Cagliostro so highly is that it probably contains arguably the single best movie car-chase ever. It is a sight to behold. You owe it to yourself to watch it.

If anyone tells you that Cagliostro is kids stuff, punch them squarely in the jaw. Thankyou and goodnight.

Best of Lupin is right here, also helps that it's directed by Miyazaki before Ghibli. Really a great tribute to the series, emphasizing all the Lupin characters' qualities, and built a very involving storyline and delivery. One of Miyazaki's best, actually.

1979???? Didn't realise it was 25 years old 'til I sat down to write this review. It really does NOT show its age. This might be because Miyazaki's penmanship feels somewhat ageless no matter what he's drawing, but quite appart from that the details in the animation are superb.

I love the characters, even the evil Duke who fits right in like a piece of the furniture. The story is fun and flows well, drawing on many aspects off the Lupin stories without actually being dependant on them. You don't need to have seen any other Lupin material to watch this, and it was the first Lupin III story I ever saw, and the better than any I have seen since.

Two thumbs up.

This was Miyazaki's only work with Lupin and it shows because this is the best Lupin of all the series and movies, in this you see Miyazaki's cleverness and sense of humor. He makes Lupin slyer than a fox, makes Jigen more animated (in terms of character personality) and also keeps the Lupin animation consistent to the rest of the Lupin series, since I'm not a fan of Lupin's animated sytle I hoped Miyazaki would alter it somewhat to find his brand, still the story is good play on mystery and suspense and I intend on watching this again very soon.

One of my all-time favourite animes.
Considering when this one was made, the animation is amazing and gripping even now.

The story is good, not to complicated but still not too nothing-saying.

The characters is absolutely faboulus, Lupin is my favourite character of all animes and his companion Jigen is one of the coolest characters there is.

You just got to see this one, you wont regret it.

This was one of the first pieces of anime that I ever saw, and it is highly responsible for getting me into anime. The idea that Miyazaki was able to conjure up this in 1979 while many studios fail to even get close to this quality in 2004 is astounding. Lupin is one of the greatest unlikely heroes ever, which makes a nice change from Miyazaki's usual protagonists (with the exception of Marco from Porco Rosso, who was also in this vein a bit). It's a real trip into fantasyland with wild shootouts, narrow escapes, damsel in distress and what has to be the best car chase ever, period! (Try and beat that one, Hollywood!) Zenegatta is an absolute riot as the spoofy yet determined police guy determined to get Lupin, and the Count was a villian that truly embodied what being a villain was about. The animation smacks of Europe of past and present and the characters are just damn entertaining. Even the dub version was good (for once!) A worthy part of Miyazaki's great career.

Wow what a beautiful anime. First of all the art is gorgeous and incredibly fluid, lots of cells were used here. Not surprising since this was probably a fairly big budget film back in ’79. The story is pretty good as well. There is a little something for everyone—creepy occult like stuff with the count, comedy, romance, thievery, plotting, politics, history and much more, my only complaint is that the perversion from the TV series is not present. The sound effects are good in a throwback 80s sort of way and the music is well done (although there only seems to be two or three songs). This is a must see for Lupin fans and I’m a Lupin fan so I’m giving it high marks.

I had never seen any Lupin anime before this but you don't need to. This thing is a great film all on its own. The story is nothing spectacular but watching Lupin continually outsmart all of his opinions is all the entertainment you'll need. The action in the show is intelligently choreographed and hilarious to watch. The animation is old but it is good enough to capture the sense of silliness in the action scenes. My favorite song throughout the film was Fire Treasure, vocal or no vocal. A great tune in all its various mixes. After seeing this, I began to watch some of the other Lupin films but this one is still the best, despite its age. With Miyazaki at the helm of this film, does that really surprise you?

A good start for those of you who don't know who Lupin is, this is one of the best movies. Lupin is sort of anime's attempt to create an anti-James Bond for the world of anime. An anti-hero who could be continually reborn for further antics. To an extent they succeeded as there are dozens of Lupin flicks, but recent years have been scarce. Entertaining, but not quite great.
