I have had the privilege of watching this anime before any other macross series, so I think I balance out the negative reviews given by those who consider it "yet another mecha series."
I also speak Japanese fairly well and have been working with Japanese for 6 years now, so I think I can better appreciate their humor and quirks.
That said, the strongest point of this anime is its story. The series starts pretty badly, but there are hints that it would pick up. Stick around till the end, and you'll be glad you did. (Btw, I suggest watching the Whale/Kujira movie around ep 19, if you get bored at the beginning).
There are a lot of stereotypes broken in this series. In the first place, the protagonist refuses to fight, is stubborn to the point of being a pain. He could have very well been an antagonist. However, his weaknesses are also his strengths. There are a mix of "important" and "unimportant" characters, with very widely varied beliefs. They grow as the story progresses, making the anime an endearing thing to watch. The story, with its bad beginning, comes to an excellent ending, still with some questions, but very satisfying.

Well, this ended up being a very hard Anime for me to review. I still remember the first time when I watched this series and that was almost 10 years ago when it was first released. "It sucked." I told myself. My young heart just could not take the pointless plot and the concept of a peace-loving Valkerie Pilot. I would have given the show all 0's back then.

The second time I tried to watch this serie again was 5 year ago when one of my friend bought the entrie VHS collection in Japanese. I watched 2 episodes and thought to myself, "it sucked." I would've given the show all 0's back then.

Then, with some dumbfounded luck, I accidentally downloaded the entire collection as I fogot what a "crappy" show this was. I only realized too late when I already down loaded 35 episodes on to my anime library. So I decided to give it a shot. And here is my, unbiased, adult-like review.

Ah memories... I watched this anime for the first time(yes I've seen it numorous times) back in 99 I wasn't expecting much because of the horrible reviews and I mainly picked it up because I was a macross nut and because of the cute girl in the picture(Mylene). Back then it was my polocy to get at least 4 VHS(yes back in the time of the dinosours) before I chose if I would continue the anime or not. This time it paid off. The first thing I noted was the intro sucked(I still think so). Then I noticed the low grade of the animation during the mech battles. I also noticed the main song of the show which initially didn't impress(It really grows on you) then came the ending I loved this one and still do as well as all the rest of the endings. I was a bit upset at myself for blowing my wad on this show at that point but I was stuck so I continued watching by the second video I was TOTALLY hooked. After the first episode it goes more into the characters and the music. Though far from perfectly well done it manages to be fun. Sometimes really fun. Onto some other subjects. Lets start with the music. Lets face it the driveing factor in this anime is music. It is true that in fact their are only a few different songs throuout the series almost every one of them are really good. The main song Saterday Night really grows on you. I still find myself tapping my toes to this one. This goes for most of the songs(except the intro). Another factor is the characters mainly Mylene and Basara. They supposedly have a love triangle going but it is never completed. But they are both fun if somewhat simple. Basara especially. Mylene has a few more layors. I wonder if my experience would have been different if I had never seen the original macross(who knows) but I loved this anime. I still use it as an example to myself to not listen to what every critic out thier says. If a story about a band that goes and fights aliens with rock and role in mechs sounds at least a little interesting to you don't hesitate to try this one but if you have absolutely no macross background and it doesn't seem interesting my advise is hesitate.

A bit of a dissapointment compared to my all time favorite classic, SDF Macross. There is a lot of cheese in this one. First of piloting valkyries with guitars is sooo lame. Some of the characters are so repellant most importantly Basara a self centered egoistic pacifist freak (although I like most of the characterdesigns). I was also increasingly annoyed as episodes went by and Basara continued to sing to the enemy (surviving in heavy gunfire without a scratch) without any effect. Fortunately I did not quit after the first 10 episodes, and the story started to improve and by the end it turned out to be quite enjoyable. As for strong points animation is pretty solid so are the songs they sing, but as this is a long series the effect of the songs tend to fade away by the end when they are repeated for the 20th time. Also there is heavy recycling going on in the animation department, some sequences are repeated too often: the mech of the feathered protodevlin is most of the time shot down by Gavlin exactly the same way. A nice surprise is that episodes are improving as the story "unfolds" most animes I've seen to date are exactly the opposite, story deteriorates in the latter episodes. I still have ambivalent feelings regarding this show. If you decide to check it out make sure to watch atleast until the middle before dumping it.

Although more light-hearted than the original Macross series, Macross 7 is definitely a welcomed continuation of the saga. With strong characters that continue to amaze and entertain you the whole way, dramatic episodes that get your heart racing and a fantastic soundtrack that has you singing alone everytime Basara flies off into a fight. Anyone who complains about this series evidentally missed the whole point of the original macross series. Culture is the key, just as it is here. The ending of the showing is an extra special payoff too that easily rewards its loyal viewers. Although there is a lot of stock footage used, the heart of the show more than makes up for it. Macross 7 is easily one of the best series around.

To start off, this is a great show. It is one of the more misunderstood shows though, and I think that it is easy for people to write it off as a bad show if they don't spent too much time really thinking about what the show is about. Before I continue, I will get the flaws out of the way.

Off the bat, here are the flaws in this anime. The animation is kind of low budget, and especially in the beginning there is a fair amount of re-use of stock footage, and also a tendency to re-use the same song over and over again. This turns a lot of people off, but is mainly only a problem for the first 11 or so episodes. From there til the end, episode 49, this show is really pretty great. It has an excellent story (which I think some people looking for just an action anime miss, judging from some reviews....i.e. people who think that music is used to kill people in this show really miss the point and the concept).

This story is actually a very logical piece into the overall Macross storyline, and fits in well with the original Macross and Macross Plus. This is largely a story about culture and human history, and I think that it is a show that rewards sticking through the episodic first batch of episodes.

The characters are great, including old Macross favorites and a new cast which is very well done. Basara is a hard character to fully understand, and he can be as frustrating to the viewer as he is to the rest of the people in the Macross 7 fleet. But it becomes easier to understand him, especially when you see that he does have a point in trying to get everyone to listen to his song....and not just the enemies, but the military and citizens onboard the Macross 7 fleet.

Mylene, the daughter of Max and Myria, is in many ways the heart of this show, as she is more of a regular person, and it is smart of the show to center on her, because she is more down to earth and easier to identify with than Basara's idealistic behavior.

I think this show is best appreciated when you have already seen Macross (the actual Japanese Macross specifically, not just the Robotech "version" of it....if you can't see the whole TV series, at least the original Macross movie, Do You Remember Love?). Thematically it fits in with the overall Macross concept very well.

I would recommend this show to people who are willing to spend some time with an anime that does make you think. For people looking for just a basic action story, it may not be the best thing to watch. But I think it's an excellent show that is worth giving a chance to.

This anime might have 'Macross' in its title. But this one is definitely NOT even close to other Macross series.

The story is boring, and the animation is definitely a turn off. The main story focuses on Basara, a street beggar singer if I might say, who can sing like there is no tomorrow. And basically he got this add-on gizmo added to his mecha to amplify his nasty voice to kill the enemy (o yeah.. powahh to the music..)

Stay away from this anime...
