Macross Plus is a 4 x 35 minute long OVA made in 1994, set in the Macross world.

The character designs aren't very good in my opinion, and sometimes the backgrounds don't suit the scene. However, the amount of detail is high, and some of the computer generated visual effects are pleasing for an anime made in 1994. Whether these improvements actually outweigh the visual disappointments in this OVA is debatable.

The music and songs played in Macross Plus are very good. They might occasionally not fit in perfectly with the scenes, but are not an ear-sore, and can add greatly to the atmosphere when played correctly. The voice overs are decent enough, although the sound effects could have been improved.

The storyline, other than being set in the future of the world of Macross, has barely anything to do with the prequel "The Super Dimension Fortress Macross". But, this does not make Macross Plus uninteresting. The storyline of this OVA is very well developed and executed, albeit a bit short in my opinion. The pace is good, and is quite immersive from start to finish. The ending felt a bit incomplete, but it was conclusive.

Character development seem a bit unrealistic and poorly paced in Macross Plus. Some characters are developed slowly and carefully, while others are rushed through. This makes some characters featured in the OVA easily forgettable. That aside, the actions of most of the characters are believable, and Macross Plus does not feel let down by its cast.

Short and sweet is how I would describe Macross Plus. As the storyline is not a follow up of "The Super Dimension Fortress Macross", this OVA is not a must watch for fans of the original anime. Nevertheless, thanks to its well paced and exciting storyline, Macross Plus was quite enjoyable to watch, and is definitely worth a consideration.

Though this is my first delve into the Macross universe, I can say that this is an outstanding (yet perhaps the tiniest bit unfulfilling) OAV.

The only straight 10 anime I've given yet, this short series/movie is definitely top notch. Nothing about the series really leaves anything to be desired. Both the Dub and the Sub are great. The movie version is essentially the TV version, re-arranged with a couple scenes cut and added here and there. If I could give the music an 11/10 then I would becasue it's just that good. Voices is bar none the best bi-lingual song from any anime I've ever seen. Probably the best part about Macross Plus is you don't really need to know anything about the Macross Universe to watch this movie. This is the first Macross related series I saw and now I either own or have seen all of them. Definitely the best installment with the possible exception of the first 26 episodes of original Macross.

Macross Plus is a very good anime series. I highly recommend this to any anime fan. The animation is good especially for 1994. It misses out on a mark simply because after the awesome mech scene at the start of the first episode, I wanted more scenes like that, but there weren't any.
There are some very good songs on this but it still isn't perfect. The voice acting is pretty good too.
The story is a often used one: two guys fight for one girl, then some other evil arises. No different here. Hence the lower mark.
The characters are all good and quite likable. They all have a history with each other that you'll really want to find out as the series goes on.
This is one of the best short anime series you can get!

this oav was a cool one i shall say, the music in this oav is great there is alot of backround songs which i like i like they put the pop songs as the backround song, and the ending song for the 3 episodes is also great the animation im sure was great back then when i see the characters and the animation in this oav it reminds me of street fighter 2 the movie for some reason, the you start to like the characters in this oav as the episodes go by. the only thing i hated about this oav was the ending because they (SPOILER) there friend guld die and they did not really care for him for some reason you just see the girl wave at isamu and that is the end and i also like to if the guy guld actually really died, and what happened to that mad scientist that went crazy with sharon and the AI he made for her they never showed what happened to that guy, i really like the relationship the characters had in this oav the girl does not want the 2 friends fighting for her and for stupid reasons and the friends keep fighting till the end till one of them realize what he did wrong and that good relationship between the friends lasted only about 10 min i say and then the guld guys sacrifices his self, anyways it is a good oav for the macross series i like this and macross zero the best for the macross universe.

"Dedicated to all pioneers..."
These simple, yet deeply resounding words start this wonderful anime that unlike any other, will , for those willing to actually absorb it fully, haunt you. And when its over, you will miss the feelings it stirred in you when watching it. Tsone in his review said it best, it stirrs something in you that just doesnt quite die down. I watched this close to 10 years ago and it is still the best sci-fi anime amongst, ova, series and/or movies ever made.

Part of its appeal lies in the fact that it is such a universal, no pun intended, love story. i.e, prior knowledge of the macross/robotech story is not a requirement.
And it has the perfect blend of drama and sci-fi-ness in it. This calibre of sci-fi/drama story has yet to be matched.

Its one of the best love stories ever animated, it only comes second to KGNE because the former is fantasy while the latter is something a lot of us could related to. Both feature heart wrenching love traingles.

The sound track is absolute genius, its just perfect and I have yet to see an anime that has such an addictive soundtrack as this one. Yoko Kanno shone in this, and each of Sharon's songs are such an audio-visual treat, that attempting to describe them would do it great injustice.

The characeters are beautiful and memorable, and even though they arent real, the feelings they stir up with their interactions with each other stay with you for a very long time. Its one of those aspects of this anime that kinda haunt you.

The art is spectacular, and not just for its time either. The only other anime that can challenge the visuals in this is "The place of promise, Beyond the Clouds," which came out last year. That should tell you about the amount of attention and care the superb animators poured into it at that time, nearly 10 years ago.

Overall, this is indeed a tremendously good anime. I dont usually recommend dubbed anime, but this one is marvellous in English & Japanese. Both dub teams did an excellent job.
This is the type of miracle anime that turns normal people instantly into hardcore anime lovers. Its a must see for everyone. You will never regret watching this one, in fact, you will be sad and envious of the time right up to before you watched it. Because you wont come across an experience like this again.

This one had some influence on me and has changed my view on anime in general. It was really good when I first saw it, and was almost perfect in most areas. I'm not a sci-fi fan, but this could be viewed and enjoyed for almost anyone. The characters, plot, animation and music were superb and had that spark in a way that almost wouldn't compared with the mainstream anime I have seen so far. I'll start with the music, it's fantastic. All of those songs were unbelievably coincided with the it that gave it an nostalgic impact. It was very jazzy and had some new age. Not many songs in anime movies would had such impact. The animation was dazzling from a lot of parts of the segments, especially on the ending. In the past, I wouldn't even believe that it could be better when I had seen the great pilot fight scenes. As for the story, it had a good meaning with its characters that added the love triangle in the process. All of the three leading characters who were all strongly well developed and had a convincing personality traits that involved with their history of conflicts. I would more than gladly to watch this again sometime, and enjoy the small things in it that made it so great.

Well if u havent noticed alredy I love this anime. This is prob one of the first animes i ever saw (when i was in grade 4) so i rele fell in love with anime than. Sence than iv seen more animes than i can count and even tho some of them were realy realy realy amayzing this is still #1 for me.

The animation is from 1994 so considering the time that this anime was done its great. The characters are done well and the music is great because its done by Yoko Kanno if u kno who that is. The series doesnt rele require u to kno about SDF:Macross but it would help so u kno exacly what the hell ur lookin at.

Macross Plus is a good OVA which requires no prior knowledge of the Macross franchise. The OVA mixes three related plotlines to create a rather strange climax, which spoils an underdeveloped story about a rivalry between two test pilots and a love triangle involving the two rivals. As a relationship drama Macross Plus excels, sketching out three interesting characters and expertly portraying their complicated relationship. Although the said charcters are a little shallow and undergo little character progression.
Unfortunately there isn't enough of the charcter interaction or the excellently done dogfights between Guld and Isamu and too much Sharon Apple.

The animation is good, easily better than a lot of current anime. Whilst the sound is superb, the soundtrack is exceptional.

Overall, Macross Plus is a good OVA and well worth watching, even non Sci-Fi fans should enjoy the character's and their relationships.

I really like the OVA Macross Plus, it was the best Macross OVA before Zero. The mixture of the love story combined with the rivalry of Isamu and Gulde, gives this OVA one of the better stories for such a short show. If you would like to know more read my review. Upon rewatching this my opinion has changed by far the best Macross even better then Zero.

First impression of Macross plus is the brilliant animation (although I do have a slight dislike for some of the character designs) and the poor voice acting.

The music is good. I love the way it manages to so effectively dramatises the end of each episode. Sharon Apple's music is appropriately disturbing and yet at the same time hauntingly attractive in a weird way. I did find it strange that a lot of the music didn't actually involve that much vocals, and is more techno than anything else... you'd think a famous singer would have strong vocal elements in all her songs.

The story is excellent, though I was a bit confused in the last episode as to what was going on. A few questions remain unanswered, and the twist wasn't as big as I expected. It was good, but it was hyped up to be aboslutely massive, and it didn't turn out as earth shaking as I was led to believe. The strongest aspect in the story is the way it always ends on a bit of a cliff hanger. The two opening episodes didn't impress me THAT much, but the ending certainly roused my interest made me want to watch more.

The characters are explosive in a cliched manner. The main guy, the hot shot with the short temper has been done so many times before, and is the reason why this anime didn't grab me from the beginning. However the tension between the rivalry of the characters does manage to become interesting enough to keep me on the edge of my seat in the end. A very watcheable anime indeed.

This was the first Macross title I've seen and it was a pretty good watch. I thought the music was awesome, so it really didn't surprise me when I saw Yoko Kanno listed as having done the music. Animation was great too, more impressive than a lot of more recent shows I've seen. I liked the rogue AI thing, but the rest of the characters seem a little weak.

But overall a great OVA to watch, especially at 2 in the morning.

I grew up with the original Macross series so I am a pretty die-hard fan with high expectations. The artwork and Yoko Kanno music were quite good, but the story was a bit undeveloped. The characters were interesting, but the super-testosterone rivalry between the two pilots got a little old, and the rape sideplot of Mei Yun didn't really belong. Fighting a virtual diva that gains control of the SDF computer is a bit lame for a villain(ess). The combat sequences were exciting, and only bested by Macross Zero.

Don't miss the excellent animation. I think Valkyries (the vehicles in which main characters ride) are best in all MACROSS series. The animation can compete with those of recent anime. The scene of dog fights between two Valkyries is superb and stunning.

Talking about MACROSS series, music plays an impotent role. Like other Macross series, the music relates to the story deeply. Music itself is excellent. After I watched the anime, I learnt that it was played by the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. Though I couldn't understand the lyric (it might be Hebrew?), it gave me a strange impression, and I think it fit the story.

Roughly speaking, the story is about a test pilot of the next generation fighter plane. There he met his old friend and the girl friend. They describe their human relations, such as conflict, misunderstanding, and friendship...probably. However, comparing to the animation and music, the story is quite weak. They don't say much, and the story changes suddenly without mentioning much. So, I couldn't follow the story

If you want to watch a good animation, MACROSS II is worth buying. But if you want to watch the good anime, you'd better avoid it.

A visual masterpiece. The year was 1994 when Macross Plus shattered all previous visual standards in this industry. And as spectacular as animation was, the musical score is arguably better. I believe Macross Plus got Legendary Yoko Kano the attention she deserved. Macross Plus is so good, this 4ep OVA brought Macross saga back on the radar after years of drought.

The Story centers around Isamu Dyson, a happy-go-lucky kind of guy. Quite Frankly, the characters aren't all that interesting, but they get the job done. The strange concept of musical weapon was great IMO. I mean we see enough dogfights and battleship misslefests every other series. This refreshing concepts lead to one of the most controversial series Macross 7, but that is a another story for another review. Both the OVA and the movie is nearly identical, with the movie having slightly better ending. A must watch for Macross fans and general fans of the genre!

The Robotech franchise (excluding Macross 2 the movie) scores again. Character development takes center stage as the collective past of our three main characters unravels. All the elements are here including supressed love, hidden feelings, and bitter rivalry.
The music plays a very important role underscoring the feelings of the female lead while portraying the unwavering tension between the two male leads.
The animation helps to flush out the true emtion hidden within each of our charcters.
Even those that normally shy away from science fiction will find a home here, while you Robotech junkies, rejoice, for your saga continues.

Macross Plus, simply put, is one of the best shows ever and is a staple of all anime, whatever the genre.

Despite being made in 1994, the animation in this 4 part series still looks top notch, almost 10 years later. Even though I give it a 10 for animation based on when it was made, it could have been made yesterday and I would still give it the same score. Pure brilliance.

The sound is, as per usual Kanno Yoko, fitting, creative, original and just complimentary to the series in every way. It pushes your emotions while watching the series just that little bit higher. I don't have the words to do justice enough to the musicship that has been put into these songs.

Storyline and character development wise, we seem to cover leaps and bounds in only a 4 part OAV. The whole premis of the series is just so solid from the base up, it really can't be anything but great. Both of the Sharron Apple/Myun and Guld/Isamu/Myun plots are executed to near perfection, it builds towards the total revelation of the pasts of the characters, with a simple yet effective twist. The characters are all given distinct personnas and you can feel their joy and pain.

The story also has a strong message, that even in the highly advanced technical world of tommorow, we should remember that we are human, and that there are some things that should not be left up to technology.

One of the truely great series of yesterday, and if you haven't already seen it, all I can say is go, watch and enjoy this masterpiece.

Space combat is pimp, and by extension, so is Macross Plus. The opening sequence was one of the richest traditional anime sequences for such space combat, and those few minutes were worth the price of admission in my opinion. I think it was intended to be one of those instant classics. There's definitely a whole Top Gun vibe, to be sure, and the story never gets too deep or dramatic, but a very passable attempt at living up to the legend of Macross.

The space combat in here, though there's not enough of it for me, is some of the best anime has to offer, and for that alone you should watch this. The music with the made up singer Sharon Apple acquired quite a few fans among people I know, though I am not personally one of them.

Macross Plus is not your typical mecha anime. For one thing, most of the storyline does not revolve around mecha at all. The level of maturity in the storyline makes it seemed as though the target audiences for this anime are adults. The characters of Macross Plus all seemed real, and there is a complex and intricate interaction between the main protagonists of the story.

In terms of animation, sound, story and characterization, Macross Plus is simply excellent.

Animation - 10/10
No other anime can even come close to this level of animation in 1994. No wonder that it was also one of the most expensive anime OVA ever produced. The mecha fight sequences are among the best in all of mecha anime.

Sound - 10/10
This anime has many great musical pieces--both VOICES and Myung theme are among my all-time favourite musical tracks. In fact, I brought the OST for this anime as it is definitely among one of Yoko Kanno's masterpiece.

Character - 10/10
Very life-like, in fact I see so much of myself in Isamu that it is quite unbelievable. Isamu, Myung and Guld are three unforgetable characters and there are many character interactions and revelations about them as the series goes on.

Value - 10/10
Mecha anime simply doesn't get much better than this.

Enjoyment - 10/10
I loved every minute of it, and it is one of the very few movies that I've watched more than once.
