For those curious, Detective Conan manga is exactly the same as the anime. To be honest, I prefer the anime form over the manga form. The main reason being that the manga does not offer much more story over the anime. I heard the rumors that they offered more ‘clues’ as to how the crimes were carried out. However, this is not true and should not be the basis of reading the manga. Detective Conan is not a series in which the viewer is supposed to solve the mystery. Instead, it is more of a presentation and adventure of how it might be possible to commit such crimes and what the characters do in various situations. The fact that they hide a lot of the clues makes it difficult for the viewer to solve it before the answer is given. Therefore, the manga is not really that much more informative than the anime. I view Detective Conan as more of an adventure; this type of adventure is more interesting with the sound effects and the animation provided by the anime.

That being said, Detective Conan manga is a good engaging read. After reading through 54 volumes, I still have a strong desire to read more. Although in the beginning half, they focused more on the episodic nature of the mystery murders, towards the end they began to utilize the character interactions and included various nice jokes and storyline progressions with the characters. For example, the relationship between Takagi and Satou was quite nicely done – as well as the humor of the jealousy of the other police officers. Another interesting storyline that was consistent throughout was the Black/Dark Organization. They started to introduce various other members and included mystery cases where the Black Organization had some sort of connection to the victim and/or murderer (when at first you think that it is another of those episodic crimes). As for the relationship between Ran and Shinichi/Conan, I must say that one cannot expect to see much romance between these main characters. Although there are various times that Ran suspects Conan, (and there are many close calls) in the end, he manages to convince Ran otherwise.

Detective Conan is a fun and simple manga read. Although tedious and repetitive in long marathons, the characters and the familiarity they evoke in each appearance makes each adventure easy to get into. Even though there is only a thin line connecting each chapter, the storyline development arcs are extremely well made and fun to read. Detective Conan’s strength lies in its characters and their frequent encounters – the lovable cast ranging from the police departments to the Black Organization to Shinichi’s parents to Mouri’s family to the Detective Boys make Detective Conan an unforgettable experience. Although I do not recommend reading this straight through because one cannot fully absorb all the stories and situations, I do recommend you to at least pick this up and begin getting to know the characters.
