| An above average anime that boasts a good backdrop plot but lacks in the development. There were a couple moments that could be more emotionally intense but is wasted because of the lack of cohesion between the characters which simply show no growth throughout the series. Orphen is a likeable character for a protagonist but it has been done many times before where the we have a typical emotional hothead. Magic is the usual sidekick and Cleo is downright annoying. The two brothers Dortin and Volcan are good for a while for some comic relief but they soon outlive their usefulness when the anime doesn't change anything about them and the fact they have virtually no real role to play in the story.
In the end this was appealing and fans of fantasy should like this light hearted adventure but nothing truly stands out.

| Good story but bad characters or too many useless characters in the story. Take thouse 2 scumbags for example. We don't know where they come from or which kind of human they are not to mention they created nothing but trouble. They're the "Annoying Bastard" who keep logging around like flea in the great forest. Now move on to Miss Cleo, the girl who do nothing but nagging Orphan around all day. Running around all day doing nothing, beside that she give a moral support for Orphan, she are THE WORST female support character I ever seen.
What I like about this series thou is that they draw a great animation. Each character is shape with differnt hair and differnt faces style. Also, the eyes were great you can see the spakles from them. Another great point is story. I can't agree more the story is well plan and have good twist and turns. Although you can pretty much predict everything except the ending which have a good turn of event.
So... Is this worth watch you ask? YES but don't be me and ignore thouse two losers(Dortin/Volcan) and I'm sure you'll get some entertain from it.

| Majutsushi Orphen was one of my earlier anime series, so when I reviewed it, I didn't have much of a base to compare it to. Now however, I do.
Orphen isn't quite as good as I thought it was. It's pretty harmless, and I don't think there is anything about it anyone could actively hate, but its pretty average all round.

this should have been a 13 episode anime. the core story only really began to get explored around midway through the series. it's not a complex story, but it did appeal to me and i liked elements of the ending. it's a great, little, dark story, but the filler almost made me abandon this series.
filler episodes in the first half of the series were pretty bad, but you shouldn't really skip them cause they had core story elements introduced here and there. i don't recall any of them being really important though.
i liked the main characters and they did develop during the series somewhat. all the other characters were pretty forgettable though.
sound and music was also forgettable. i thought both endings/credits were great though, and they made me like cleo (main female protagonist) more...
animation wasn't fairly standard, if a bit incosistent occasionally. some scenes were drawn such that the characters looked more realistic, than their normally cartoonish features. i like the art style (frequent use of highlights). however both openings are abit mis-leading as i don't think i saw any fight scenes of the same calibre.
overall, i'd say give it a shot. if something looks like filler, i'd say skip it. but be aware you might miss one or two small story elements. a new character introduction, or maybe a few flashbacks.

| Regardless of what people say, I really enjoyed this anime and have the boxset.
The animation is good, I mean.. watch other series and compare it to this. Its great, I love how they draw orphen.
The music can get repeatative, but its great. It can definatly get stuck in your head all day.
I saw nothing from with the story. It was cute, romantic, action packed and so funny. It was wondeful. There were so many twists in the end, somethings I couldn't even believe that would happen. I mean, whoa. SERIOUSLY.
I love the characters, i'm not just saying this because I have a huge crush on Orphen either. Its great, I love the characters. They DO develope. Man, I hate it how people have issues with this anime.
Value. Well, I brought the boxset- doesn't that just say it all?

Animation-For 1998, the animition is above average. Quite a few still scenes though.
Sound-The music is ok, but it loops throughout the whole season. Gets old.
Story-The story starts off fine. Later it takes a nose dive. Quite a few filler episodes that were useless and boring. Several inconsistencies throughout the whole series are obvious and the whole premise of the story seems unbelievable(AZALIE WHO?)
Character-Orphen is likable. Though hes kinda coolish/wimpy or some such. The comedy in the series.. well I dont think I laughed much.
Value-Save your money. Rent it, if its cheap enough.
Enjoyment-Enjoy it for a little while. Theres gotta be better magic style animes out there, someone give me some good suggestions ^^

| Orphen is a good anime to watch. It might not be the outstanding magical fantasy, but I find their story is pretty original. The animation is great, I love old fashion 2D, so I gove orphen perfect 10 for animation. The sound is a bit annoying in my opinion. The Seiyuu and dubbing deserve perfect 10 but the music was terrible. Using rock and techno music for magical anime did not fit at all. I admit that Orphen dress in heavy metal style rather than the old fashion magicians in the anime. However, other characters still dressing in old fashion. So, I rather say good old classic or at least pop music would be better for this anime. The story is good, however some plots are ways too easy to predict. The characters is interesting, however the story concentrated too much on Orphen. So, if you like Orphen as a characters, then you will like this anime. If you do not like his personality, then you will not find this anime that attractive. The values was friendship and love but it is not as strong as other fanstasy anime. Overall, this anime is very enjoyable.

| This anime is packed with action, romance, comedy, and everything you can think of.
The story is very good how one of Orphan child hood friends gets transformed.
Animation isn't the greatest but it's watchable.
The only think that bothered me was the image/sound it made between those commercial break spots. It sounded rediculous not only that it played music while showing a still image.
But I enjoyed this one till the end, you should give it a try.

| I started watching Orphen quite casually, I knew nothing about this anime.
Folks, this is a VERY GOOD anime. The first bunch of episodes are a bit cliche, and a bit boring. Also, there are some lame filler episodes.
HOWEVER, the core story of this anime is AWESOME. And the ending...... seriously folks, this anime is worth watching just for its ending.
Also, it has some really sweet comedy. Especially Volcan, haha...this one part made me laugh so hard:

In one of the later episodes, Bloody August (monster) just wakes up and Volcan says "Come Dortin! Hop on its back, its about to fly!" But the monster doesnt fly, instead it just sits there. LOL. Volcan says "Hey stupid bird! Dont do those Okay-I-Am-Going-To-Fly like misunderstandable actions". THAT WAS SOO FUNNY! LOLOLOL!!

Cleoe is funny too.
The best part about this anime is that it makes you feel the characters.
Orphen is worth your time. I assure you. Around eps 14-15 you'll be hooked.

| Ok, so it's not the *best* anime out there, but it certainly isn't the worst one I've seen. In fact, I'd say it is on my top ten list. I liked Orphen - the biggest dickhead in all of anime history (although he's a bit better in the original language) - and I liked basically everything about it. It's about as flat as a piece of paper when concerning suspense - you could see, hear and smell everything coming from a mile away (not like that's a bad thing!) - there are one too many fillers, and the songs start to get a little boring, but overall, I really enjoyed it!

| This is not one of the best but it is definitely good. I really enjoyed watching this anime. It has got some very funny parts. It's got its drama and some good action scenes. Some times the music got a little old but overall I found it very catchy. I highly recommed this anime for anyone interested in the good fantasy anime

| The fantasy-comedy genre has been dead since Slayers. (I personally prefer fantasy without comedy. What will Twelve Kingdoms be like with slapstick? My point exactly.) The success of Slayers has spawned several middling imitations, such as Sorcerer Hunters and Rune Soldier. I mention this because Orphen is one of the few (pro-Slayers) anime in the field that is worth watching. Although its mediocrity is fastened on the face of its abundance of fillers, formulaic characters, and arbitrary plot, the series is still fun to watch.
Beginning very much like your standard role-playing game, Orphen has a plot that is worth thirteen episodes, but is stretched for twenty-four. We have the party. We have the omnipotent object that said party desperately needs. We have the quest. We have the damsel-in-distress. If this isn't video game material, then I don't know what is. As mentioned before, there is an annoying amount of filler episodes, but once the story moves along, it's forgivable. But what can't be forgiven is an entire twenty minutes watching the cute factor of the series frolic around. But on the most part, the fillers were tolerable.
...and this is probably credited to the very funny trolls (Dortin and Vulcan) and the Black Tiger. Vulcan's stupidity and greed and Black Tiger's long-winded super-hero speeches will make most viewers laugh out loud. Besides the comic relief, there are the main characters: the title character, Cleo, and Majic. Despite that Orphen is as stereotypical as they come, he is nonetheless the best character in the series. His sarcasm is one of the best parts of the anime. One of my favorite scenes has Orphen pretty down and out and Cleao tries to cheer him up. After she stops talking, Orphen walks away, but not without saying, very sarcastically, "Thanks Cleao. ....that's deep." :P Cleao, until much later in the series, is nothing more than an annoying side-kick that is made to drool over the studly protagonist. Majic, despite an occasional burst of magical genius, has an ironic name, and is quite useless. In any case, Orphen could have made the journey alone for all the help those two were.
As standard as the primary cast may be, they do develop as the story progresses. Cleao is not the same spoiled, selfish brat as she was in the beginning of the series. She slowly learns to care about people other than herself; she has faith in the people that care about her, and in a few instances, she risks her life. And there was a particularly beautiful scene in which she spends hours looking for an extremely rare stone just so she could give it to a particular someone. Furthermore, there was character development on Orphen's part, as well. In the beginning, it was hard for Orphen to trust others and he preferred doing things alone. However, in the end (and he says this himself), he is able to accept others by his side.
There is nothing deep or penetrating about this anime, unless you want to count the punny names and the idea of appearance vs. reality. The series' strongest point is its humor and lightweight plot. Though the anime is flawed in many areas, I wouldn't exactly pass it up. If you're looking for something fun, then look no further.

| wow! what a shitty show! there are not alot of shows like this where i actually leave in the middle, knowing i'll never, ever give it a second chance. and i expected for it for so long.
so predictable it's boring, too many fillers, miniature and shallow plot, lame fan service, bad animation (even for its year), way too common and overused humor, not interesting characters, not original, horrible eyecatchs. 8-{
before i completely erased the whole show i scanned the future episodes just to check what i'm missing (another thing i don't tend to do) - nothing. i'm so very glad i stopped at the middle and hadn't continue with it.

| After a not very exciting begining, full of filler episodes, the story starts taking force and increasing interest from the middle onwards, until it reaches a great dramatic climax in the end.
The main characters are well developed, although it's a pity the few developement of some very interesting secondary characters.
In conlcusion, Orphen is a good anime. Give it an oportunity. Don't stay with the first episodes!
(PD: Kakashi, your joke is not funny at all, as it contributes to descend the average rating of the series. Wait till you've watched it, please!)

| I've been having a hard time latley coming up with detailed reviews and\or opinions about anime that i review here.
While im not a fan of one-line reviews either Im going to be brief, and to the point.
Orphen well met my expectations that I had going into it. It's been a while since ive watched a show that made me want to see what happens next like orphen did (i finished it in 3 days). Everything about it was great, I dont think i can say anything more then that.
Like comedy, action, magic, fulfilling story? Well, orphen has it all, and uses what it has to create an experience that you wont soon forget.

| Orphen ist alles in allem gesehen ein sehr runder Anime. Nicht wirklich etwas besonders Hervorstechendes aber auch nicht übermäßig schwach. Eine schicke Storyline sorgt von der ersten Episode an für Langzeitmotivation die zwar ab und an von ein paar Fillerepisoden getrübt wird und manchmal etwas abflaut sich aber dennoch mit Freude verfolgen lässt. Besonders gegen Ende wird es sehr spannend und dramatisch. Fantasy/Magic-Animes zählen zwar nicht unbedingt zu meinen absoluten Favoriten aber Orphen kann überzeugen und sorgt nicht zuletzt durch einen gesunden Schuss Comedy für viel Unterhaltung. Empfehlenswert!

| this is an excellent fantasy/comedy series, that i enjoyed a great deal.
orphen is a character that can appeal to just about anyone. he's cool, loveable, and never really annoying. he makes for a great hero/main character. cleo and magic made great sidekicks.
what's going on? well orphen is looking for bloody august, a dragon who was once a beautiful girl, and someone who orphen loved and admired. his former colleagues are trying to kill her, while he's trying to save her.
this series just worked for me. the animation is excellent, EXCEPT for 2 episodes that sadly looked like poo. but 2 out of 24 isn't too bad. the episodes were all fun to watch.
the music is excellent. i loved the OP and both of the ED.
the ending is great! and there is a second season to enjoy! it wasn't needed, but because the show was such a hit more was made.
a fun series, i recommend it highly to fans of this genre.
