For a lot of people when they think “shoujo” they think of Full Moon wo Sagashite, Boys Over Flowers, Fruits Basket and of course, Marmalade Boy. That's why I picked the title.....Buuuuuuuuut while I DO love shoujo but I could barely tolerate Marmalade Boy mainly there is too much unnecessary angst and most of the drama is self-inflicted. This show did not touch me neither on an emotional nor intellectual level.
It has a very dated look, very 80's with flat coloring as well as stiff unnatural movements that's predictably associated with anime from that era.
Out of the whole series I the song I loved most was MOMENT, even though it's completely overused in the series. I dunno, something about the xylophone and that 80's base beat really worked for me. I include it on every anime playlist I make for my iPOD. The SAYONARA song was a little too melodramatic for me, sorry.
The whole series is melodramatic, with all the terrible music and dramatic lighting, exaggerated posings, let's not forget the constant crying and running down endless flights of stairs....EGAD! For me this show is too much like a daytime soap opera they could call it “As Miki Turns” seriously someone give that girl some Klonopin or Lexapro because she is just too anxious it's kind of annoying. The story has no real plot just people falling in love with each other, over and over again and thenmore people show up to form love triangles, love squares and love polygons...after a while it all becomes a bit tedious. The only really interesting story would be Mako and Nao-Chan, the student-teacher relationship.
The character design is terrible, the faces are OK but body-wise they're a hot mess....A HOT MESS!!! It's like they took silhouettes intended for high fashion design and tried to make it work for anime. Um, can we say FAIL boys and girls? Everyone's hips were too narrow and combined with those matchstick-like legs that moved awkwardly a lot of the time they walked and posed like their thighs were fused together. The girls' torsos seemed fine and acceptable by anime standards but the boys' shoulders and torsos on the other hand were very broad [sometimes the width of about 3 heads] and yet there is no muscle mass or even any kind of definition they are just abnormally larger “skeletally” than the girls. Things get worse when you look at an actual adult male in the series, they look even more freakishly larger and disproportionate in relation to the school kids.
I own it but I can't re-watch it. Miki brings too much unnecessary anxiety upon herself, every minute the guy is gone she thinks he's cheating on her or forgotten about her or dead....it's annoying. She's the kind of person that could potentially become a stalker. Personally, I would recommend Boys over Flowers or Full Moon wo Sagashite over Marmalade Boy any day.

Marmalade Boy is one of best of the Drama/Romance genre that I've ever seen. Of the 76 episodes many involve one long on-going story encompassing a multitude of like-able and characters easy to relate with.

Emotional investment is a must and you'll be rewarded with a cash payout of smiles and many even a warm fuzzy feeling within your heart, such is Marmalade Boy.

For one, Marmalade Boy is my favorite anime. What I like about it is the storyline and the plot. It has a lot of twists and turns which will make you head spin. It also has a lot of couples and love triangles, and not just one couple hogging all the attention.

One thing I also liked about it is that it has a lot of main and supporting characters, which makes the story broader. It has childhood lovers, love at first sight, student-teacher relationships, incest relationships, and more.

But just because Marmalade Boy is my favorite anime doesn't mean I'll score it high. I do have some negative comments to point out.

First, the animation sucks. The characters resembled a stick drawing made by a kindergarten child. Some of them were too plain or too comical. While the background scenes lacked beauty and elegance. And also the color combination really pisses me off. It's like my mom's wardrobe back in the 70's.

Second, like the animation, the sound was far from acceptable. The opening and ending songs were poorly done. Although the sound effects brought out the hilarity in some scenes.

Just because Marmalade Boy is just an ordinary anime, it doesn't mean that I hate it. It's still one of my favorites. You'll learn a lot about the boons and banes of a relationship. And you'll also experiece a funny and romantic feeling while watching the couples in the anime.

Marmalade Boy is definitely not my cup of joe. I dont know for how many episodes after 13 that I had to tell myself to keep trying in the hopes that it'll get better. However, the pacing throughout is pretty consistent with all the dramatic points being really kind of lame, and dim-witted.

The main reason why I didn't enjoy this anime was due to how the characters are not unique and interesting. While the original story basis is very interesting and brings up the possibility of a number of interesting twists and turns, they slowly get around to developing anything of merit. In the end, this just consists of a very immature and innocent female character trying to cope with the only trouble in her life... love of a guy. A few other issues come up , but everything is basically all chipper and happy (maybe this changes later, but I never got so far).

I also found the animation to be a huge turn off. Characters just existed for image representation sake. There was nothing artful behind it, nothing that helped enhance the mood. It seemed to only exist for the sake of distinguishing one character from the other. Not only did the character styles not tell anything about their personality, but the horrible use of colorrs just makes this revive my past anime nightmares.

In the end, Marmalade Boy is not suited for people (males?) who like tense emotional scenes from the start, beautiful animation, and a fluid, connected, and always moving storyline.

One of my favorites and the best of this genre I've ever seen.

Koishikawa Miki is a typical, ditzy high school girl. Involved with tennis, with plenty of friends, she seems to be living the good life. She thinks nothing of the vacation her parents take to Hawaii ... until they return and announce that, not only are they getting a divorce, but that they are getting remarried! Apparently they had affairs with another Japanese couple and have decided to swap spouses. (Wasn't that the plot of a 70s movie?)

Of course, things only get crazier when she meets the completely aloof, yet oh-so-handsome son of the other couple, Matsuura Yuu. Naturally, despite the fact they're practically step-siblings, they fall for each other. But they try to keep it a secret from their family, and most of the school. Never mind that the rest of the school is preoccupied with their *own* jumbled relationships.

The first time i saw italian version, sadly censured, and so i downloaded all the japanese episodes with english subs.

I'm seeing again... 4-th time

Not bad, but it was mostly a shoujo with some twists on it. I wasn't into the story too much as it went on, and the main character was so irritating on Yuu. Although I liked the other characters, which were rarely seen in the story, the character's persona on Miki are just based on certain feelings and thoughts during most of the story. The concept was somewhat average, which had some interesting character development and a highly mixed love triangle story. You would probably like it, if you’re favoring into the whole shoujo genre.

it's a good anime, the main characters are very interesting, they are easilly likeable, especially Miki ^^. The history is great, I enjoyed all of it, but in the time when the characters are in USA the history turns a bit strange. The music is perfectly mixed with the drama moments and it gives a scary appareance, but the dubbing isn´t very well. I don't think that Marmalade boy is like the others drama anime, it has something especial...^^

Most of the main characters are neurotic, especially Miki. The animation is fine for its time, though the clothing the characters wear is unreal, it does not seem like clothes people would wear for the era. Still, at least the characters change their clothes from show to show.

The characters themselves are generally likeable, or at least fun to watch, and the show provides pleanty of conflict and drama to keep most fans of this type of show interested. This show is not for action/fantasy/sci-fi fans. Tokyopop's dubbing is more bearable than most dubs, and the actor commentary gives pleanty of insight as to how the actors view their character and the series as a whole.

In a romance comedy, the characters and their interactions are more or less the most important aspect and this series fare badly for both. Character wise the main character Miki is annoying, shallow, dull and contradicts herself. The other character Yuu is the typical act cool guy that is in 9827394 anime. Other characters are all stereotypes and their introductions are always forced to be mysterious. The interactions are very typical and stale, making it real boring sometimes plus cheap music. Overall it is below average unless u read a lot of romance novels etc.

Let me say I truly enjoyed this from start to finish. It was an emotional rollercoaster ride. The art was not great. the music was cheesy but the key is when it surfaces to make an impact, and that, it did. The characters you fell in love with all of them. I love Suou & Arimi! Rokutunda gets my votes towards the end. The last third was a bit weird, but that part was true to the manga. The anime is better than the manga for this one, hands down.

First of all, da characters are very weird. I like them that way, but seriously if you don't like Miki, then this whole anime is a major blow over. Everyone in the anime loves Miki and you must too, because you'll just hate what she goes through. Out of the anime, I think it had a lot of romance, my fav., and a drama with comedy. The drama was a bit sad, and I must admit I cried, but that's not the point. The point is, is that if you don't like drama don't even bother with this anime. Some of the parts are a bit corny *cough* *cough*. I think people will enjoy this anime, if you aren't the things i said above.

Okay, this is just an average anime to me. The love triangles and such reminded me of a soap opera or something. At first it was interesting and then it just got annoying. Miki is torn between Yuu and Ginta. GOD would she just choose. I must admit the whole parents switching their partners was interesting. Then that makes Yuu her step-brother and such. I don't know what to make of this. I know many of you enjoyed this anime. Maybe I just need to be more patient. It's not an awful anime, just average to me.

Summary: Love triangle to the n-th degree (I'm quoting this from someone 7 years ago)
Personal Score: Only met the passing grade. 6.7

The summary above came from an attempt from 'someone' to plot the relationships of all the characters in the series. Strangely, there aren't many (if any) stories out there (non-anime included) that has such a complexed relationship structure as MB. You have all kinds of links here - teachers dating students, parents exchanging partners, step sister dating step brother...

... makes this story sounds scary doesn't it.In essence, this is a sweet romance story with 'complexity' being its originality. Shoujou purists would but this anime in the hall of fame.

Would recommend to shoujou lovers, but only if you have nothing else to watch.

I really enjoyed this anime a lot. Even though there's a lot of episodes and that it took time to finish the whole serie, I still liked it. There are a lot of twist and turns in this story and it's amazing how you see each character's personality and love life develop as each episodes goes by. Definitely worth watching even though it's an old anime.

Heh! Funny but I honestly cant think of a way to start a review of an anime like this. The anime is extremely average. The story is very simplistic and straightfoward which is just about a countless love triangles (or pentangles in some cases). Typical in many ways and something done a bizillion times before. The comedy is scarce for the most part but is decent for whatever it is.

The characters were ok for the most part. Personally I couldnt stand Miki over her contant blathering and worrying over Yuu, it got painfully annoying. On the other hand Miki's best friend Meiko was a lot more interesting and all the episodes involving her were immensly interesting. I really wished her to be the main character, because of personality and complexity. The soundtrack is petty good for the genre and suits the series nicely. The animation is below average even for its time. It didnt catch my eye at all.

Finally the filler episodes are aplenty and were a wasteful watch. The anime isnt bad but isnt terribly good either. I think it might definitely for someone who loves the genre and delivers on that whole love triangle thing, but for nonfans like myself this got tedious to watch because of the length and sheer unrealism and so many coincedences. It was like watching a very average soap only with schoolkids.

I find this story is too unrealistic. Yuu is blindly in love with Miki. I admit that I was in the similar situation with Yuu, which I find that the girl that call me everyday (oversea call, of cause) is extremely annoying. Therefore, I hate the last 10-15 episodes of this anime (New York series). I might give it more points, if the story ended when Yuu move to study in USA. Also, the problem between Yuu and Brian was solve too quickly. This kind of problem could last months or even years to solve. Brian appears as a racist but at the end he mysteriously making friend with Yuu. Also, it is kind of impossible for everyone in the group fall in love to each other. I never see this case in my life. Also, what people see in Miki, she is annoying, jealous, and childish, and selfish. Somehow all males like her. For god sake, this is the girl that I will never ask to going out with. I prefer Arimi or Suzu-chan ahead of Miki.

For a not so new anime series it was really enjoyable! It kind of lead on for the 47 episodes, but then I must admit that it was quite addicting. Each trait in Marmalade Boy is above average and deserves good credit.

I should really say that Kodomo no Omocha is very similar to Marmalade Boy, but I think the other way around since I saw Kodocha first - the characters, animation, and even the story seem similar.

By watching the introduction theme song, some things are given away and don't really help with the suspense of Marmalade Boy which is a disappointment, but the creators are still able to keep you on the edge of your seat with their drama.

Generally, Marmalade Boy is a great series - it was cute how they added hints of "Marmalade Boy" labels to many of the products used. The character development was nicely done, music was lovely and if you're a sucker for romance - I think you'll really get sucked into Marmalade Boy.

I really liked Marmalade Boy, the animation was pretty good for it's time, but not so much a staple for seeing the series. The plot is well written, establishing a realistic view of love and relationships (though the idea of parents swapping partners isn't...well...normal). Plus, this series will have you rolling with laughter. :) It's a combination of comedy, drama, and romance (comdramance, to be more original) There were times when the music distracted me in certain scenes, but I thought it was good as a whole. (I really liked the ending themes to all three seasons. The opening's good, but I really liked the instrumental version better. As for the in-series music, great overall). The characters are all developed nicely throughout the series. I think that they could have done without the third season (the New York trip), but it was a nice addition. Overall, great series. :)
