| [Update]: I just watched the OVA for Candidate for Goddess and found that it managed to explain a few things, but only to a limited extent since it was in Ernest's POV. Nonetheless, the one-episode long OVA was more meaningful than the entire 12-episode TV series.
Even if Candidate for Goddess is a disappointment to you, check out the OVA to witness what sort of life the Goddess Pilots cherished and lost. =)
I am writing this here because I cannot find the webpage for the Candidate for Goddess OVA.
~
Candidate for Goddess was a real disappointment, mainly because of the fact that there is so much left unexplored. Like many other reviewers have pointed out, there was heaps of excellent potential and the storyline was not completely original, but captivating because of new elements such as the EX abilities or goddesses and pilots working together within sentient machines. Candidate for Goddess, however, fell short of the expectations of the viewers by nerve-rackingly leaving things totally unexplained.
Animation:
Candidate for Goddess deserves a 7 for animation and no higher because though there were some 3D bits here and there, it is not outstandingly brilliant to watch. Some fighting scenes are reused many times and there isn't a great variation in the setting of the anime in a short 12 episodes.
And somehow, the animation looks really familiar...
Sound:
Mainly orchestral music in Candidate for Goddess. The OP was orchestral and without lyrics (I believe) but the ED was a little different, and for a change it actually sounded a little less pretentious.
All the bgm was orchestral as well, which did not always suit the purpose of the scenes. Sound effects were not used enough and sometimes sounded really childish, like something you'd hear in the Powerpuff Girls as they shoot laser beams from their eyes.
Character voices were the best aspect of sound in Candidate for Goddess, because they actually SUITED the roles of the characters and their personalities. The voices were often quite emotive and also added flavor to the emotional bits of this anime.
Story:
A great background storyline, with all the Goddesses, the chosen pilots that you naturally want to know more about, the EX abilities and so on...
But sadly, the main storyline was extremely boring, repetitive and unoriginal. Zero Enna is an outcast kid and aspires to become a pilot, that being his main goal in life, which is very much like the anime Naruto. [Note: if you have watched Naruto and do not like it, do not have high expectations for Candidate for Goddess]
This anime lacked action even though the main character wanted to be on the battlefield so badly, causing most of the anime to consist solely of Zero Enna talking to his teammates, which is quite a waste of time because they never get anywhere or to any conclusions.
Character:
Very cliche personalities absolutely bring the anime down. Candidate for Goddess felt like a brew of many aspects of anime thrown into a pot, making it repetitive and dull - like you've seen it all before.
Unfortunatley, some characters go beyond just cliche - they absolutely betray the storyline and turn it into a disastrous pile of events that don't link. Some characters, I felt, were quite unnecessary. Names and new terminology were flying everywhere before viewers got a chance to pin them down.
Oh yes, and I did mention that none of this is properly solved/explained in the so-called "ending" of Candidate for Goddess?
Looking for a show that is worth watching? I don't think Candidate for Goddess is anything you'll be pleased with.
Rewatch value?
Very near to none.

| Candidate for Goddess can be more aptly described as being one big, juicy bait.
It presents potential viewers with its premiere episode ‘00’, bountiful amounts of eye-candy, a seemingly interesting plot filled with mystery and lots of space battles to satisfy even the most hard-core action fans. However, what this anime doesn’t want you to know is one dark, little secret: There is no ending. It piles on with every episode more drama, more symbolism, more of everything and just when you expect something grand to happen, you’re just left with thin air. I won’t say I didn’t fall in its trap; it’d be as big as a lie as the anime itself to say that, and a lot of arrogance of my part.
The characters, for one, have all cliché personalities you’ve seen before countless times, ranging from the determined Zero, to the know-it all Clay, and the cold, emotionless rival Hiead. You’ve seen their counterparts in many anime before, but they’re overused archetypes for a reason: they’re actually likeable. Seeing the interactions between the cat-eared Kizna and Zero always made me smile every time, not to mention other entertaining characters like Wrecka, Roose, Gareas, and the rude instructor Azuma Hijikata. That’s not to say that all the characters are appealing or worth remembering in the least; there’s sure a large cast for a series that’s only 12 episodes long, and thanks to that there are more than a handful of boring, unremarkable characters. Like the yawn-inducing, shy Tune, the uninteresting brother and sister Kazuhi and Yu, those nameless fanservice nurses, and Ernest, whose only purpose is to fill up the melodrama quota of the show. But the worst character goes to Ikhny, who seems to have no will of her own other than to make Hiead happy and then pathetically whimpers in a corner if he’s angry with her. Though there are still even more people that I couldn’t bother to remember their names, the characters are one of the best parts of the anime.
The plot started out well enough: humans lost their home planet thanks to the alien invasion called ‘Victim’, and they had to live in colonies in outer space, while still trying to protect their last planet (Zion) with the help of five mecha goddesses. Though many plot points were confusing and muddled, each episode tried to explain part of what happened in the past and you sort of began to understand some of it. But soon new mysteries began to appear, and the whole focus of the show grew more and more dramatic as it drew to a close. And what an ending that was.
…Well, if it had an ending, that is.
See, this anime gathered all the potential it had for it, and brought it crashing down in just one minute flat. After the credits rolled, the whole plot suddenly turned into one big fiasco, the characters were mere puppets, and I felt betrayed. Candidate for Goddess was really a trap after all, and it laughed in my face cruelly after I finished watching it.
And for your sake, don’t fall for it too.

| Well, this anime is hard to review. It had big potential and it was so ungracefully wasted in the end.
Characters are quite interesting, but unfortunately the main protagonist is unbelievably cliché’d. Sorry, but thorough the show the only connection I could make in his case was like, “Zero=cliché”. My favorite characters are Ernest and Garu and they’re my favorite pairing in this anime as well. I just can’t get myself to like the idea of Garu making Leena his girlfriend (which in manga he somehow unfortunately does,at least I've heard so) or Ernest wasting himself for Tune. My, big excuses to every fan of her, but I simply can’t stand her. Her tiny voice and timid character are just unbearable.
The animation is very good, the music good enough- I really like the ending song. But the plot… Let’s say that its beginning was not the most original, but later on it started to be really interesting and it had me stuck to the TV with all my attention. Few striking mysteries, little, but enigmatic details and that good stuff. I was extremely curious to know what it all meant and I expected the ending…
…which I didn’t get. Simply. This anime’s end can’t be considered as a true ending, because it leaves almost nothing revealed and resolved. This isn’t even an “open ending”! We just watch it, wait for the teasers for the next episode and then… nothing! I realized it was the last episode and all I was able to say was a big WTF, to put it delicately.
Overall, this a good anime, but the ending disappointed me like hell, and you’ll like it only if you enjoy huge cliffhangers and no answers to the previously given questions. You can watch it (on TV, like it was with me) but don’t necessarily spend your money on it.

| Candidate for Goddess was one of those shows that had a big potential to grow but never got the chance to with only 12 episodes(and one OVA). The story involves around the main character Zero Enna who enters an academy to become an Goddess Pilot to defect the beings known as Victims. The story sounds a bit over used but the different personality of the each characters takes you for a wild ride.

| This is one of my earlier animes that I watched. I hadn't seen very many and I thought that this was awesome. I am basing this review on the emotions that I remember since it was awhile ago.
I dont know how i would consider this anime after I watch it now.
For starters, I don't remember the story at all. Anime stories that are good, I will remember no matter what, despite the fact that i watched awhile ago, so I'll have to give it a low score
I remember the animation was really good. One of the best of that year. I also remember that I really enjoyed this anime. I don't remember the character at all.... any of them, not even how he looks. Probably very generic.
I guess overall, this anime is decent to watch. It ends really horribly, I remember that. It was like... a let-down and I wished there was more. For that reason, maybe this isn't worth it since it leaves you hanging.

| Sadly I would have liked my first review to be one of exuberance, however given the case...it is not. Candidate for a Goddess is visually stunning, combining CGI with very detailed artwork, but it is only that. Beyond the glitzy veneer of this series lies a non-sequential storyline with many many holes. What started out as an abitiously light and promising story somehow lost steam somewhere in the middle and became a bewildering train wreck at the end. The relationships between the characters range anywhere from contrived to unfounded. References to future events remain enigmatic. While the protagonist, antagonist and supporting female lead character were well defined, all other supporting cast remain diluted. By episode six, you are basically hurrying to the end to just get it over with...and that's a shame. One can only hope that there is a manga available to provide missing data or a follow-up OVA to make the whole series more cohesive.

| Weird.. The anime is incomplete and I heard the oav that come out in 2002 doesn't make it any better.
The animation was ok, sound was oki oki, story didn't have enough time to explain itself or add any intense into it. It start out almost like steallvia, I bet Steallvia stole the idea from this series and make it completed. The idea is that some ugly monsters were trying to destroy earth(Stellvia made more senses by shift to big bang), then these kids were up on the space adcadamy learning shit how to operate the vassle and fight ship. Differnt jobs, differnet stat., differnt positions, and so on. The background story is very interesting. For example like: dreams, forgotten past memories, and the fact that some unknown monsters with unknown reason keep attacking earth(zion). What was lack is sequal, it really need one or else this one will be piceces of crap that's not worth watching it at all. It like you listen story then the teller just stop. How sad; I'm sure if someone would give it a sequal, it'll become one of the interesting anime.

| Ok, so another giant robot anime. Well, you cant do much with giant robots... you need to have giant enemies... preferably giant enemies that come from outer-space because... you don`t have them on little old Earth...or little old Zion... so, yes, the plot is not that original, but... there`s actually a reason for that. So...it was a...hm...nice story.
Animation was ok, nothing too amazing, some things better than others.
The characters... I really like Zero`s partner, the ears are a nice touch. On the other hand I don`t like Zero much.
Music was ok, I think.
Not being very fond of mecha anime I'd never rate this very highly, but there are far worse anime in this genre. This is not good, but well... it's bearable.

| Well I was kinda disapointed in this anime in that it ended just so abruptly. However from what I heard the reason why they stoped it was because they did not see the series making much returns, so therefore they stoped at mid way, which a lot of animes seem to do these days apparently.
Well the animation could have been better, it wasn't bad but I thought that some of the mecha cgi were a bit fakish. The sound was alright, it blended in with the series fairly well.
The story was prety good in my opinion. The relationship between pilot and mechanic was a good idea, the characters were prety interesting as well.
Unfortunately just when things were starting to get interesting, the series ends. Well I was dissapointed, cause I felt that the series was at a turning point and things were starting to get interesting. Oh wel..
Its a prety good series, I would reccomend it since its only 13 episodes..=P
(Wats with the comparisons with NGE? I am sure NGE got its ideas from somewhere as well)! ^_^

| It started out so nice, but i didn't expect it to focus on pilot/repairer training more than on actual fighting.
The animation and sound are average for recent animes, and the art isn't very original (you'll get this 'i already saw it somewhere' feeling)
The story is ... confusing. it starts out great with a lots of mysteries (what is this mysterious power called ex ? who are these victims ? what exactly are goddesses ? why the hell did humans only make five of them, baka !) but in the end it doesn't answer anything. The main plot event, Zero's dream of becoming a pilot, isn't even realized... The only evolution from the start if that they got gears now... (of course loosy one compared to the goddesses). You are left with an unfunished story and it's very frustrating. It the same feeling as when you take a 26 episode series and only watch the first 13. It's nothing like a real open-ending it's just a brutal stop.
I don't know if there is a manga to continue the story (like angel sanctuary, it could very well only be a preliminary) but i didn't find one, if anyone has it please tell it to me and i'll change my review.
Well anyway, if you want to laugh for a bit, watch it as it's kinda funny, but don't get too much in the story or you'll only be VERY disappointed it stops this way.

| The Story is nice but doesnt have enought time to develop, since IT ENDS IN THE RIGHT WHEN IT SHOULD GET INTERESTING.
I liked the two main charas, eventhou they are not very new.
They have nice superpowers called EX, but I wonder why we never get to know what it really is (people DO ask it in some episodes, but never get an answer) or see it in full effects.
The World is cool, mainly because mankind is almost on a lost position. Too bad we dont get to know why.
The enemy is pretty faceless, but it's not like nobody questions why they have to fight or who the enemy really is. A shame that the series ends before any conclusion is drawn.
Afterall, this COULD have become a nice series.

| Wannabe-cool. Wannabe-NGE. That where my first impressions. And i still think Megami K. isn't THAT great. But, anyway, i enjoyed watching it and would also recommend it to others.
I started watching this one because i saw a picture of Zero and what's-her-name on a magazin and i found what's-her-name kinda cute, so i wanted to see the whole thing and had no special expectations. And after watching it i have to say it's really so-so-la-la. Not good, not bad. Really average.
BTW: why the hell does everyone have to have such silly names?!

| What makes Megami so wonderful are the characters themselves their histories and how they interact and relate to each other. Unlike most anime, the main focus of the series is not on the heroes of the story, but the young students who are aspiring to be heroes, while the fight for survival is taking place elsewhere in space.
It's kind of hard to review the whole story since it didn't really finish, the manga is still going on I think, so their might be another series on it, or maybe it's just another "Legend of Basara"(just to let the public know about the manga).

| Fun to watch, but lacks a good ending.
It's not a high speed anime, but an anime which builds up the story. The story itself is very simple, just some guys doing training for the Goddesses. And you know after the first or second episode, that those 5 guys will go with their respective Goddess.
The only drawback i could find in the anime was the complete lack of an ending. Probably because this anime wasn't very popular (i'm guessing here though) in Japan, it didn't continue. Probably it's a story for about 26 episodes and i really would like to see the rest.
