| In all of the 3 Maison Ikkoku installment (series, movie & ova), this is the first I watched. And like in the movie, I was quite disappointed, that is because ep 1 is too short while ep 2 is long, but it's just a recap of some of the important events in the series. I thought it's the continuation, but like in the movie (again) the events in ep 1 is a sort of fillers between the episodes on the series.
The story in ep 1 is similar to Ranma 1/2 movie 2, all of the characters are stranded in an island after the yatch was destroyed. Later, Godai and Mitaka went fishing and tries to make themselves look good in front of Kyoko while the others, Ichinose, Yotsuya and Akemi are like in a vacation spree.
The ep 1 of the OVA is like a regular tv episode, it is just 20 minutes. I wish it were longer or at least several episodes long, well, there's a second one but it's just a recap and I wonder what's the purpose of producing it for the OVA when they are all shown in the series. In short, I am disapponted with this OVA as I was with the movie.
The characters are still the same, Godai is a wimp, Mitaka is a show off, Kyoko is modest, Ichinose, Yotsuya, and Akemi are still drunkards and doesn't care if they don't have anything to eat just as long as they have something to drink. And because I watched this before the series, I was quite surprised by the character's personalities specially the 3 partygoers.
Not worth buying the DVD as it is not re-watchable, only ep 1 has a slight re-watch value but none for ep 2.
I would recommend the first ep, but it is not connected to the plot of the series so it is not necessary to watch.

| This contains two OVA episodes, of which one is a new material.
Ova 1 is a new episode in which the whole group gets stranded on an island, because their (Mitaka's) boat sinks. The animation here is practically same as in the tv series, and they recycled the first opening theme from the tv series as an ending song this time, but with the new footage clips. Mitaka still is Godais rival here and still has the fear of dogs. Will the group survive? (This episode is about 22 mins long) The characters were very cliche here-their behaviors were just as expected: Godai has stupid fights over Kyoko with Mitaka, Yotsuya and others get drunk as usual.
The second OVa is a compillation of all the tv episodes into the most important and romantic Kyoko and Godai moments. There is nothing new in that one. But I must say its a good way to rewatch the series without dealing with 96 episodes again.
