| I didn't know what to expect when I started this. There is no doubt that the series is from the 1970's. The animation is dated looking and the music and some of the sound effects are something else. This all needs to be put in perspective. Since it was just made in the late 1970s, this is all perfectly acceptable. Once you get used to it, its turns out to be quite enjoyable. Though some of the dialogue and seems a little bit forced, this series is able to capture your interest quickly. There are plenty of characters to love and hate, and plenty of content to justify it. It is easy to see where SEED got many of its ideas from. Though they are similar in different ways, the story is still very unique and definitely worth the time. I had alot of fun with this series and was on the edge of my seat towards the end of the series.

| While I did see this title over a year ago, it took me a while to work up the courage to watch it. How so? Well I saw Char's Counterattack in 2002 only after having read a few synopsis' of MSG and Zeta. With the aged animation and tacky looking mecha, it's no wonder why many Gundam fans have over-looked the great grand-daddy of all Gundam.
For something made nearly 30 years ago, it is incredibly good and really set the bar high for anime of its time and beyond. The characters have an incredible amount of depth to them, especially Char, and the theme war is hell rings out loud and clear throughout. Yes it had its flaws but it's very easy to forgive considering its age. If your not sure about the original series I suggest watching the 3 0079 movies which is what I did long before watching the series especially if you can't stand dubs since the movies were released in Japanese while the series is English only.
It really surprised me how remarkable this title was. You really can't call yourself a Gundam fan and not see the series that started it all and revolutionized the way we see anime as we know it now. Believe me, those who question this titles greatness and get around to seeing it will be saying 'this title is way too good to have been made in the 70's'. MSG set the bar high, high enough that not alot of current titles can compare to it.

| At first I was very thrilled to finally get to see the beginning of it all. The first Gundam show. I hadn't watched anything else than the latest series from Cosmic Era before this one, and my expectations weren't very high before I started. It's impressive how the tension and thrill is made, though the animation quality isn't much to brag of. However, it bears signs of being very old.
For all of the Gundam fans, like me this is something you just have to watch. The story is actually very good.

| Where it all began. The classic that revolutionized the genre. A must-see for any mecha fan and anyone calling themselves a Gundam fan. Standing alone, or when combined with Zeta Gundam and Char's Counterattack to complete the main story arc, its simply one of the most memorable and important anime in the genre. As compelling now as it was over 20 years ago.

| I have watched this along with Gundam Seed this year and this is the godfather of the greatest anime and mecha industry. Wow, watching two Gundam shows in different worlds, both the old and the new seems to be quite extreme. The animation is simple and does provide most of the latest innovations to make this series legendary for the next decade. The story is a fast-paced with episodes which are stress-free and the realistic elements like tragedies of the war and the hero's involvement of the war can be seen thoroughly. The musical background is classical with the heroic theme. Amuro Ray, the sensitive, but remarkably smart kid through Neotype abilities experience hardships through various characters from the Zeon soldier Ramba Ral to the Neotype Lalah Sun. The concept of Neotypes were explainde further in the Gundam alternative universe series, Gundam X. Char Aznable is the best character. Gundam villains always hide their pasts, ego and motives through a mask. Her sister, Sala Masu is the pacifist White Base crewmember secretly fighting against him. Their character development made even further into the alternate universe series, Gundam Wing as Zechs' Merquise ansd Relena Peaceraft. I would like everyone who does not know about the Gundam legend to watch this.

| Again, it is a pity that this style is considered old, but truly, the art is remarkable. The background, mecha designs, diversity of character designs, and action choreography deserve a lot of mention.
The soundtrack was great, better than the theme songs in my opinion. Unfortunately, much of the original soundtrack was not in the butchered 3 movies that this series was shortened into.
The story is very serious. It is Gundam Seed without the over-dramatizations. It is realistic and the moments of ponderance are very artsy. The complex themes are many, focusing on victims of war in the first half and more intricate politics and newtype theory in the latter half. Again, these played out so well in the series more than the movie.
The characters were all rounded, from both sides Zeon and Earth. They all had complex issues from dealing with war, inferior complex, love, pride, selfishness, family... Within this category should also be the mecha designs. Gundam RX79, Guncannon and Guntank had their own terrain advantages. What's more, mecha movement is so much better than other subsequent Gundam series in that they are not overly flashy, and moved for a reason strategically to the plot development and action building. The evolution of Gundam's movement in the beginning to when Amuro becomes aware of his Newtype abilities really is different and observable.
Without a question, this is a classic that is worth collecting if all the tv episodes can be found. Back in my high school days, I rewatched the entire tv series on my betamax tapes every summer vacation, realizing new things every different time that I saw it. If you can get past the animation old-style, you'll have so much to gain from it.

| In 1979, Yoshiyuko Tomino revolutionized the anime industry with the definitive mecha show, "Mobile Suit Gundam". However, it wasn't until its re-broadcast that it became popular. Over the years it has spawned numerous sequels, side-stories, model kits, action figures, posters, manga, and such.
The story takes place in the Universal Century timeline. Other UC-timeline shows include Zeta Gundam, 08th MS Team, Gundam 00080, and Gundam 0083 to name a few. But the original is a true classic, with a somewhat tragic broadcasting story on American television.
When Cartoon Network first aired Mobile Suit Gundam, it was canceled near its final episodes, ostensibly because of the terrorist attacks on 9/11/01. It's second run stopped even shorter than the first, because of what I believe CN said was a result of poor ratings. Apparently, nobody has any taste. Then again, it was on very late.
Mobile Suit Gundam is the show that started the craze, and before viewing Zeta, I would have said it was far superior to the others. Now it's in sort of a tie with Zeta. Surely though, it's better than any alternative universe (AU) Gundam shows, such as Gundam Wing and Gundam SEED.
The characters in this show are unforgettable. The charasmatic Char Aznable, the stern Bright Noa, the honorable Ramba Ral. These are the archetypes for all the Gundam characters that came after.
The story is gripping and intelligent, far beyond its giant robot toy merchandising (an aspect of the show that irked Tomino). But it's not without its flaws.
The show is from the late 70s. The animation is obviously far below subpar when compared with today's works. Hell, even compared to those days the animation wasn't anything special. That itself is what prevents many people these days from enjoying it. In some way, I enjoy the grainy, shoddy 70s animation. I just can't give it a high score for it, though. The music is of course, retro as well. The original theme song (you won't find it on the American DVDs) is disco-esque. For some reason, I love it. Heh heh, go figure. There are some pieces of music that just go so well with the action.
The movie trilogy are made up of compilation movies that cram the forty-three episodes into three movies. They take leave out some of the more ridiculous vehicles, some filler side stories, and unfortunately, some more interesting aspects (like the White Base's participation at the battle of Odessa). A chunk of Mobile Suit Gundam animation was re-done for these movies, and I prefer their Japanese with subtitle format to the domestic DVDs' "dub only" situation.
Anyway, I'd recommend checking this out if you are a Gundam fan. Actually, I will make a generalization. If you haven't seen this, don't think that you know a damn thing about Gundam. Sieg Zeon!

| They made this series into three movies and that works much better than the series because the series is to choppy in places. (I.E. credits and opening and middle 5 second break were a waste after the first time) Overall I would recomend watching this if you are a friend of the classics or if you like mecha... otherwise its up to you. Go Red Comet!

| This review is based on the Gundam movie trilogy.
Mobile Suit Gundam is one of the most timeless, defining anime series ever made. Alongside shows like SDF Macross, this classic made anime what it is today. To say this has held up well over the years is an understatement. When compared to Gundam Seed, the original simply blows away the newest varation. The raw, honest emotional power behind this series is nearly unmatchable, with the story demanding your attention, and every character leaving a lasting impression. Gundam may take place in a ficticious future, but its views on war are still valid. A must see.

| This is the very first Gundam series, which started the 2+ decade saga of Gundams. The development of the Gundam History starts here. The Earth Federation vs. Zeon in the one year war. The legend was begun with the computer geek, Amuro, became the accidental Gundam pilot. The rivalry between Char and Amuro begin by just beating each other for glory. Amuro wants to defeat Char for acknowledgement of his skills, Char wants to defeat the Gundam for its interruptions. Things get more and more personnal as the battle progress. People they loved and respected had got involved in the battle, and died in battlefield, thus yielded to intense rivalry toward each other. Both Amuro and Char argued about human nature and newtypes at the later episodes, which made the rivalry even more intense.
Speaking of Char, his hidden agenda was shown at later episodes. His reason of vengeance didn’t make him as bad as any villain we expected to be. Compare to the Nazi-like Zeon, he was just a by-product of a political conflict. Since he is the first mask guy in Gundam series, he is the “grandpa for all other mask guys in other Gundam, such as Cronicle Asher in V Gundam, Zechs Merquise in Gundam Wing, Schwarz Bruder in G Gundam, Raw Le Kuruze in Gundam SEED, and Neo Lorrnoke in Gundam SEED Destiny.
Amuro grows from a nerdy boy to a man in battlefield. The characters who affected him the most, such as Ramba Ral (Andy Bartfirld is the copy), Machiruda, Lalah Sun...etc, made him grow and realizes the cruelty of war and conscience of human being, which are the major theme of this Gundam series. Even though Amuro had learned this variable lesson toward the One Year War, the result had been quite negative, that he has to bear all the suffering until he can actually become more mature.
Too bad, that's the fate decided by Tomino. Char and Amuro have to rip each other apart for 13 years. (Actually, they joined forces at 0087. After Char's realization of human nature, their rivalry becomes super intense in 0093.)
This One Year War is only the beginning. The star wars that people fighting against each other for different ideals had just started. As the UC calendar progresses, the bloodier the conflict can get. Since the first Gundam was only the first season, one may expect more conflict after it. Of course, Zeta Gundam is the next season of first Gundam, and things are even bloodier!!
Anyway, the two important things in this Gundam series, are the Earth Federation vs. Zeon, and Char vs. Amuro. Their rivalry had cause a mess of things.
In general, this series is very famous. I don't think anyone don't know about this series. (Maybe non-Gundam fans.)
This is a must watch for ALL Gundam fans because this is the first generation of this 24 years saga. Also recommeded to mecha fans. You can't call yourself a Gundam fan if you never watch this series!!

| The mother of all Gundams! Mobile Suit Gundam has created and transformed the whole mecha world of anime! Excellent storyline, realistic characters, and beautifully desigined Mobile Suits! This is the series that makes you feel sad even for the sake of the so called "bad guys", the Zeon Dukedom.
The only down side is that since it was made in 1979, the animation is not what most would've expected, more like Speed Racers quality. Mobile suits animation looked really awkward even when for a hardcore Gundam fan like me. The music is also downright corny at times, but some of the BGM at the end is really touching.
The story alone is well worth watching it as the realism and personal drama is beyond imgination! It is so rare that in a story where everything makes sense, the technical aspect of the MS, the characters, the conflict, all of them are extremely memorable!

| Wow, I was really an ass in my previous review of 0079...and I haven't the slightest clue why.
But anyway...here's the beginning of the Gundam franchise. It's quite a good beginning, setting up some major characters and plot points that will reappear in later series.
Animation isn't too bad, and the art is quite good. Music is good, the dub is acceptable.
Characters are classic but I really didn't understand some of them too well. Story is deep and well developed but it didn't touch me the way Gundam X's story did.
It's enjoyable, and a must see for mecha fans.

| After watching Gundam Seed, which I really enjoyed, I wanted to know where all the hype about Gundam was coming.
Well I just finished watching the entire series. To be honest, I wish I watched it years ago. The animation, specially the opening theme were really a turn off AND I had to watch it dubbed (aarrrrgh).
I almost gave up after a couple of episodes but the story really picks up sometimes. Now I really have to admit that Gundam Seed sometimes really ripped off MSG.
By the way, what's the big deal with that Char? Why everyone loves him?
It was fairly enjoyable. I hoped Zeta Gundam is much better.
We'll see

| Note: I watched the 3 compilation films, but they dont have those for review for some reason
Animation: For 1979 it was good, ive seen a beter looking film from that year though but still preety good for the year, then again ive only seen one other show from that age i can compare it to.
Sound: Good public domain explosion and beam sounds, for one reason or another the sounds are often used throughout the gundam serieses
Story: Very good Story, especialy the fact that there are plenty of sequals around to continue it.
Character: Good characters nice devolopment.
Value: So-so, everyone knows about gundam by now, but sense its a very good show it has value
Enjoyment: Very enjoyable, fun show, good story and it will set you up for the rest of the gundams.

| I had seen quite a few Gundam series before seeing the original. As I was watching MSG 0079 I had a feeling I have already seen this anime. This is not MSG 0079's fault, but it is really dissapointing that only the soundtrack and animation improved in most of the other Gundam shows as the story remains generally the same, only the names of the characters change.
Most Gundam shows always have a mysterious masked character, also a young boy who finds himself in the cockpit of a prototype gundam and who quickly masters its controls and finds out that he is a newtype, colonies that eventually crash into Earth, satellite and colony based super weapons etc...
As for this anime, apart from the old school animation style and dull soundtrack it didn't leave anything to complain about. I highly recommend this anime as it will probably change your view on other Gundam series.

| Phew... Where to begin? To start off, let's just make it clear that THIS IS THE GREATEST GUNDAM SERIES IN THE HISTORY OF ANIME!!! There has yet to be a Gundam to out match this one. Probably because every other Gundam series branches off of Mobile Suit. Let's begin with MSG's best aspect: the storyline. The 'One Year War' is probably the most fascinating thing I've ever come across in a mech anime. The creator excellently portrayed a vast war between Earth and the colonies of space with plenty of intricate history and political perspective. The plot flows very fluidly from the first battle on Side 7 to the final showdown at A Bao Qu. Not only that, but the story itself always leaves you curious about what else happened during the war aside from White Base's expedition. The Mobile Suit designs are classic and the Zaku KICKS ASS! In fact, both armies' armada of mobile suits will keep you entertained throughout the entire series (however some of the Zeon ships get a little... wierd towards the end of the anime). One major flaw in design though, is the fact that the Zeon Zaku has a highly explosive fuel tank. I mean, in the show all they seemed to do was poke the bugger's back thrusters and BAM! The Zaku was up in smoke after the mushroom cloud cleared... But even so, this doesn't really have a huge effect on the series its just fun to point out. Anyway... Character design was excellent even though everyone seemed to have some quirky personal flaw. In the beginning Amuro's a crybaby, Char is a fruit, Garma is a closet gay, and Kai is an ass. And POOR FRAW BOW! Its bad enough that the poor girl has to put up with those snotty buck-toothed kids, but she can't even get it on with Amuro because the freak is too busy obsessing over Gundam parts! But don't let that scare you off! This series is excellent and is a MUST SEE! Replay value as you can probably guess is really high but taxing due to the length of MSG. Music is extremely awesome even though it is obviously from the 70's (Char's Theme is demonically catchy). Basically, you can't call yourself a true Gundam Fan (hell, not even a mech fan) if you don't watch and/or LIKE this series! Mobile Suit Gundam is a MUST and if that doesn't interest you right there, then at least consider it the doorway into the other 20,000 Gundam side stories out there.
