Miyazaki is called the Walt Disney of Japan, and for a while I didn't really understand why, but now I do. This is childish, yet charming fare which I am almost ashamed to admit I enjoyed a lot.

My Neighbour Totoro is a ground breaking and magnificent anime movie made by Studio Ghibli in 1988, which revealed the high standard all Studio Ghibli productions would follow for decades to come.

The graphics and animation is nothing short of perfect. The degree of detail is immense, and even the smallest of motions is animated to its fullest. In addition, the character designs and emotions are extremely fun to look at, and the facial exaggerations fit in very well. My Neighbour Totoro is an amazing animated feature, made even more impressive given its age.

The theme songs in My Neighbour Totoro are pleasant to listen to, not to mention catchy to quite an extent. The voice acting and background music are also extremely impressive, but does contain some errors in the sound effects. Nevertheless, the sound effects do suit their associated animation, making the audio in this movie very satisfactory.

The storyline of My Neighbour Totoro is a wonderful fairy tale which will capture the imagination of both children and adults alike. It remains pleasant from start to finish, and is set in a relatively realistic environment. Combined with the excellent graphics and animation, My Neighbour Totoro will make viewers long for it to become reality.

The cast of characters in My Neighbour Totoro have excellent personalities, making them very enjoyable to watch. Although they are not extensively developed, the development is sufficient, maintaining the satisfaction of the movie from start to finish. Half of the cast does not utter a single comprehensible word, but their designs and the way they are animated makes them just as brilliant, if not better.

My Neighbour Totoro is an anime movie that would satisfy viewers of all ages. A definite must watch for all families, this anime movie rivals even the latest products licensed by its producer Disney. A pleasant masterpiece from start to finish, it is no surprise that Totoro has become Studio Ghibli's mascot for all these decades.

Probably my least favorite Ghilbi movie and most over-rated.

It was slow/boring mostly and obviously aimed at kids.

Only recommended to kids who can watch a slow movie or just wants to stare at totoro for 2 hours prertty much.

I suppose this is only a good film for children, because children won't bother criticizing everything, and aren't desensitized to violence. They take in atmosphere very well, love animation and will easily be able to relate to the two main characters and find their little adventures interesting. In order to get an accurate review of this film you need to get 5 year olds to watch it, and then ask them what they think, because that's the audience the film was made for.

This film didn't do anything for me. It didn't have any comedy, action, romance or anything remotely fantasy-like, dark or beautifully moving- like Spirited Away. It focused on family, happy times, and children discovering the world around them. I can't think of any other film like this, and in its uniqueness, it can be considered a good film. But I only enjoyed the last part of the movie, and when I re-watched it I was incredibly bored.

Tonari no Totoro is a movie targeted to younger audiences, and thus is explained its slow pace and sense of sweetness.

Lot of subjects in a very deep story, loved by most of the people. Although probably not the best of Ghibli Movies, it remains a masterpiece.

This movie is something unique. I havent seen any other movie like this. The only thing I can compare this is some fairy tales (either pure animation or clay and puppet stop-motion animation) I watched when I was 5-6 years old. In the story aspect it is that simplistic. But even a simple story can be appreciated if the rest of the film manages to convey it appropriately. There's where the film succeeds and becomes enjoyable.

This is a story and animation that contains good doses of warmth, humour, and magic that I feel have been missing from the latest offerings of disney. No wonder they had to buy into Studio Ghibli. There are moments in this film that linger in your mind once you've seen it. The moment the two sisters are waiting in the rain at the bus stop with Totoro and the humor Totoro has with the umbrella is a magical picture I can't take out of my head and how did Miyazaki think of the Nekobus is totally infathomable. If you take it for what it is, a film for young persons, it should be among the top five.

A purely innocent and a light-hearted segment, which was known to be more than touching for this aged film. For everything would be seen from the storyline, it highly depicts and revisits the wonders of the cherishing occurrences from a youthful viewpoint. Playful and imaginative though its journey within the two girls, who were the main characters that were highly felt, mainly focused on these colorful events as the storyline which was so magnanimous, serene and believable. This story can be found on something simple, yet clearly shown their own age on what was believed from their own over-given curiosity. Totoro was a certain character who was made for the eyes of Mei and Satsuke on seeking the playful image from having it settled in during the time of what was spent as part of their engaging experience on being just children. Sometimes stories just don’t need to be all that complicated to hold and prove a point. Such films given from Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, truly beholds a form in these ideals and values that would give their objective with the rehashing youth. Whether it came from Grave of the Fireflies or Nausicaa, everything was earnestly done for a reason; while not just for the sorrows, the awes and joys. The idea that it was created was done quite well with its valued inspiration of what lies on being caring on those people who we think that are really important, and how it affect from those who are involved on what is percieved of their personal benevolence towards them. This movie shows those elements and does what it needed to do. Most of all, making it enjoyable for anybody; not only for the children and for adults that is purposely given, but for those who want to see something that is actually worthwhile.

true ghibli classic! animation and music are top notch, even for something from the late 80's.

not much of a story, but very whimsical and imaginative. i really liked how totoro or some other magical creature appeared whenever the girls were stressed out, worried, or depressed. it captured the essence of children and how they deal with problems by evoking their imagination.
characters were lovable, with more concentration on the girls and just enough background on the parents (ie not too much). this way, the film revolved around the children of the movie, and made it that much better.

this is one of those must-see movies, for young and old. one classic that i doubt will ever die. =)

The animation is pretty good for somthing that is draw in 1988, the animation is really similar to The chat returns, which was draw in 2002, which is kind of a bad animation for The cat Returns. The sound is pretty good, no annoying characters and the music is pretty good for something created in 1988.

The story is just about Totoro, the spirit of the forest in how he befriend two girls that are hoping their mother will get better and come back home. This is pretty much how they get to meet Totoro and live next to this Spirit of the forest. The characters are really well developed because there are only a few characters.

Overall, i still think this is a really good anime the first time i watched it when i was really young and the second time that i watched it. I recommend it to everyone to watch it because is a great fantasy story about Totoro.

OMG This was just so cute... I mean I never watched it until 2002 and this just blew me away. I felt like a little boy who would've wanted to cuddle up to totoro, silly smile plastered on his face, umbrella in hand. Man I wish I could ride the plush Neko Bus Express...

Yet whilst its probably easy to assume that its for kids cos its so cute and all, I think again in Miyazaki's films, children tend to be the mature ones rather than the other way around. Sometimes, we lose the innocence and optimism we had as children and miss out on all the wonderful things around us.

Watching this reminds me of Marry Poppins+Alice in Wonderland. Really its a little bizzare/imaginative, but the story is quite easy to understand, not that nice compared to Grave of the fireflies, Howls moving castle or Mononoke, but its enjoyable I have to admit that.

Tonari no Totoro, one of the classic anime movies that almost every has heard of. The problem is... I wonder if everybody who has heard of it has bothered watching it.

Totoro is one of those "must be seen at least once if you hope to be a connoisseur in anime". However, in reality the target audience is not for those who want to be grossly engaged in their media. In other words, definitely not for the teenager population (unless he or she loves cute little animals and spiders running around). My impression is that it is meant for little children. All the themes are simple and 'fun' and innocent. Perhaps thats the charm to it.

Another possibility of Totoro is that it allows adults to reflect upon their youthful days and to temporarily create a moment of the "good old days where life was so simple". Since I'm not yet adult, nor am I a young child, Totoro was very boring for me.

Satsuki is a "noble" character. A possible children's role model. The main actor of this show. However, there is absolutely no story, which leads to a very difficult plow through for those who don't fit the audience range.

Overall, I wouldn't really recommend this to just anyone. The lack of any action, drama, or a plain storyline makes Totoro boring. Totoro himself is very overrated and although some of his actions may evoke small laughs, he's just some oversized rat...

Simply delightful. This is an execellent children's anime. The character are the best part of this anime. Totoro's such a loveable, fluffy character lol. The little girl Mei is also an excellent character, she's like the little sister that everyone would want hehe. Stoy's incredibly imaginative like you'd expect. I don't know how he keeps coming up with these ideas. One thing that seems to be common with all the Miyazaki movies that I've seen though, is that it always seem to feature a tomboyish girl as main character and there's always a boy in there somewhere who tries to make friends with her. I'm starting to get just a bit tired of seeing that same theme over and over again. The animation of the scenary is simply amazing. The clouds, the trees, OMG, it's just so good. The character designs are as good. I've never been that big a fan of the style of characters of miyazaki, it has to be said. In this one it they seem a little more off than usual, especially the mother character. Surprisingly, the sound isn't as great as usual Miyazaki material. I mean, it's still good, but it was more than just good in the other Miyazaaki that I've seen. Having said all that, I think this is my favourite out of the Miyazaki movies that I've seen.

It is a bit old, and it is a children story. But the elements in this story are great and fun to watch. Do not watch action, violance or something. Watch this for the expieriance. This is outstanding Ghibli work/entertainment for young and old!

Miyazaki sensei's work is always full of surprises. This movie took me all the way back to my carefree, imaginative childhood and by the end it was like a trip to Neverland!

Totoro is so adorable and the characters' emotions (the famous bus stop scene) were illustrated in great detail by the fine artworks and enchanting OST. This anime does not contain as any serious themes like the other Miyazaki films so some people commented that it's childish. That was my thought too BEFORE i watched it, so let me assure you this is just as good as the others with a touch of pure enjoyment.

My Neighbour Totoro has been and always will be one of my favourite anime movies of all time.

The imagination of Miyazaki Hayao is simply astounding, and as always, very compelling. Music by Hisaishi Joe is also very memorable and fits the perfectly.

I've seen this movie several times throughout my life and every single time it seems to get only better. Like all Ghibli films, the experience is on a completely different level.

A magnificent animated movie! The epitome of anime films! I would recommend this anime to everyone, especially kids.

Totaro is wildly imaginative, the Cat with multiple legs bus, Totoro himself with a loud roar and his two sidekicks, the two sister Mei and Satsuki very well characterized. The music especially the bgm (Joe H does it again) adds to the entertainment and finally although it deals with a illness of their mother it also displays comedy, nature themes and the connection to the spirit world.

I've seen many Miyazaki films, and surprisingly I enjoyerd this one the most. This realization is somewhat out of character, since my favorite animes are GITS series, Ninja Scroll, VHD, Texhnolyze, and Berserk. I guess to keep it simple, it is the 'cutest' movie I've ever seen. Amazingly, i was able to stomach it all without finding it corny. Very few films embrace and embody the nuanced, genuine nature of 'family love', but this film soars where so many idealized, unrealistic American sitcoms and family classics have failed. Totoro did have some magical 'Disney moments' (both artistically and emotionally moving), like when Belle dances with the Beast, or Aladdin goes on the magic carpet ride. In tradition with other Miyazaki flicks you may have seen, the scenes are so zany & impossible to describe that I'll just let you see it for yourself. :) But when Mei first encounters the slumbering Totoro, and the girls witness the giant tree sprouting in their garden, my heart skipped a beat.

This film is a nostalgic masterpiece, and anyone of any culture can relate some aspects of the film to their own childhood. The granny reminded me so much of my own gentle grandmother, and I could almost feel her presence a decade after her passing. If your family has ever had to care for an infirmed loved one, you well know that the girls' latent tension that eventually erupts into frustrated sorrow, and the forced, uncomfortable optimism (like pretending everything is ok and they had to keep living normally waiting for mommy to get better) is very real.

The two girls display such a zest for life, enthusiasm for the simplest excitement, active imagination, and a tender affection for the other characters. We all remember feeling that way during moments of our youth. I sometimes wonder when those sentiments disappeared and the realities of modern life turned me into a mundane adult! Now I know why other reviewers admitted that they cried during this film, probably from the memory of a carefree, simpler time. I'm happy that Miyazaki's work was able to touch us so genuinely, and we are all very grateful to feel the splendor of childhood again, if only for a couple hours.

And hands-down, Totoro is the cutest, warmest animated character of all time. He puts Mickey, Barney, and Pokemon to shame.

It isn't as good as some of his other work, but Miyazaki still delivers reasonably well. It's a fun story, and Satsuki and Mei make some fine protagonists. A pity they don't really have any great secondary characters to back them up. Plus the animation seems rushed compared to other in terms of background, shadowing and other effects.

This story is a fun one about the beauty of youth and imagination and fairytales, and is clearly aimed for a younger audience than any of his other titles. Personally, it ain't my favourite, but it's still worth watching.
