Perfect Blue centers around a small pop star's transition into the film business. Her life is turned upside down by her new, less innocent work, a stalker, and several murders that occur around her. Much like Millennium Actress and Paprika, this is another Satoshi Kon film that blurs the lines between reality and delusion, only to a more suspenseful effect in Perfect Blue. Mima, the ex-pop star turned actress is filming a TV drama but throughout most of the movie, it's often unclear if certain events are taking place on the filming set or in reality. The drama being filmed is a murder drama, and it eerily mirrors the murders surrounding Mima. Then there's the nagging question throughout of whether the entire scenario that plays out, Mima going into the film business, has even an ounce of reality to it.

While it's never outright confusing and open ended because reality comes crashing down every time you hear the word "Cut" from the director, indicating that the previous scene was just acting and not real, Mima's psychotic, and delusional nature constantly keeps the viewer on his toes about just how deep her fantasies go.

Perfect Blue doesn't go the route of many thriller novels or movies by giving its batcrap crazy characters the unnerving ounce of "normal" humanity that makes us wonder if these crazy characters are really so far from ourselves. Mima is not a character that will draw much empathy, as she is quite simply, just insane. The suspense from this film comes from the anticipation at every curtain drawn, every dream mima awakens from, and every scene that's being shot for the drama that the already vague reality that the film follows will be completely turned on its head. That, and the visceral nature of all the violence.

Satoshi Kon has always done beautiful running animation, but nowhere is it more appreciated than in Perfect Blue. The way the characters stumble a little every now and then, or run full sprint into a wall and push off to round a corner rather than just slowing down and making a turn, coupled with spectacular voice performances by the cast, most notably when they're screaming for help or begging for forgiveness does wonders at conveying the sheer terror these characters are experiencing during the more violent scenes. From eye stabbing to rape, some of these scenes seem like they're too disgusting to watch, and there was always a part of me that wanted to turn away, but the fear bleeds through the screen in such a way that I found my eyes glued, and myself actually praying for the characters' safety. In this sense, even though Perfect Blue doesn't establish the easiest characters to empathize with, the shockingly realistic way they convey horror (relative to other Anime at the very least) awakens the kind of primal empathy or concern you may feel when seeing someone in distress.

The twist at the end is skin crawlingly creepy, and at a happy medium between predictable and out of the blue. It's hinted at a few times throughout the film, but with all the reality bending and psychotic delusions going on, it certainly isn't the only outcome I suspected. Too bad it so clearly distinguishes the previously hazy borders between what is real and what isn't that it's a little unsatisfying. Such an ambiguous movie should retain a little bit of its ambiguity to the end, but instead the climax brings reality down fast and hard. I can see how some people may find the straightforward ending more satisfying than if questions were left unanswered though.

There's no arguing that the climax is spectacular. The whole movie makes beautiful use of tension without any gimmicky camera angles that zoom in on boggling eyes or some other such junk that many psychothriller anime titles use to create unease when the scenario itself isn't enough to accomplish it. Perfect Blue is creepiness in its purest form.

Perfect Blue is one movie that I have a difficult time coming back to considering its very graphic murder-mystery premise, yet it's hard to deny how unique it is in execution, and granted the number of few Kon movies I've seen, each has impressed me in its overall seamless form of storytelling and ability to draw me into the movie as the respective events unravel.

The story revolves around singer turned actress Mima Kiragoe, as she pursues her newfound career despite the lack of agreement among some of her most devoted fans. The most disturbing realization of this disgruntlement earns Mimi a very brutal stalker, responsible for a number of death threats among other threatening acts in deterring Mimi from pursuing her acting ambitions. The movie seems to add to this rather disturbing problem by blurring the lines between reality and fantasy for Mimi, as she becomes wrapped in deluding and fleeting conceptions of reality in the midst of fear blending with a number of deaths, strange occurences and threats that seem to mix within the realm of their proposed movie.

What I loved about Perfect Blue was its ability to wrap the viewer within that blur between fantasy (the movie) and the actual events occurring within reality, so that those following Mimi could be cloaked within the confusion and paranoia she experiences. It's really an ingenious form of storytelling and allows one to be "in medias res" with the action and plot progression. While the movie does tend to slack in some places, once it picks up momentum, it keeps the viewer on their toes and progressive holds until the very end. Also, it's definitely a mystery that you don't see the resolution coming until the very end of the movie, and while this mounting anticipation and unexpectancy is refreshing, it also left some expansion to be desired considering a few plot threads laid bare.

What I didn't like was the lack of expansion behind some of the characters. It almost would have been a lot better if Perfect Blue had been developed as a progressive OVA series to really allow the viewer to get inside the heads of those around Mimi as well. Mimi's character isn't as throughly explored as it could have been, but decent enough considering she's the character we follow through most of the movie. I also found certain characters a bit cliche and tacked on in the moment, i couldn't find myself really connecting with them, even Mimi, who seemed shortchanged developmentally, but again, considering this is more action/event oriented with that blend of fantasy/reality, it may not deter some viewers as much as others who look for a character centric and driven plotline (the latter inclusive of yours truly).

I disagree with most of the people who say that Perfect Blue's animation is stellar...not by a long shot. Even Paprika and Millenium Actress had much better animation than Perfect Blue. There are times the eyes of the characters are haphazardly drawn, inconsistent movements and character design all by the wayside here. It's hard not to take notice at how choppy it appears. The backdrops and dark feel of the movie, however, make up for most of these inconsistencies if you're willing to look past them, and admittingly, the mood of paranoia the movie sets does work well with the animation at times, but surprisingly, the inconsistencies lie in scenes that weren't intentionally coupled with the mood set by the events.

Music is definitely enjoyable, I liked the J-pop themes featured within the coat of the movie when Mimi was showcased in her pop-idol status. The BGM works very well also, particularly in the more climatic scenarios. Voice acting in both the English and Japanese versions are very well done, and are quite appropriate given the thematic of the movie.

Now, I'm going to be very firm about Perfect Blue when it comes to recommendations, because I feel this needs to be stated succinctly where some might have neglected to say it. THIS IS NOT AN ANIME FOR ALL AUDIENCES. It contains some graphic (detailed nudity, blood) and violent scenes including a graphic rape scene (which even made me feel quite uncomfortable, despite going into the movie with an open mind). If you're a young viewer under the age of 18 or a sensitive viewer who cannot stomach the above, this is not the movie for you. I think it does take a more mature perspective to be able to "get" and appreciate what Perfect Blue has to offer, but by no means is it a movie that executes all of the points well. It's unique, and certainly for those who can appreciate good murder mysteries/suspense/psychological thriller, but take it with a grain of salt. It may require watching more than once for those who find the story convoluted and confusing on the first watch, while on the contrary, those who might love it on the first watch may not be taken with it on subsequent views because of what the storyline may lack in further expansion.

I would give a recommendation for it to audiences who appreciate the genres noted above, however. It's an engaging movie and very unique among the majority of anime movies I've seen.

Perfect Blue is a 80 minute long psychological horror anime movie containing a nice twist in storyline, despite leaving a number of plotholes.

The animation is smooth, and the graphics look very sharp, despite the design being a bit outdated. Perfect Blue tries to look realistic, and it succeeds quite well.

The audio is decent, and the singing well done. The voice acting fits the characters well and of very high quality. Perfect Blue is quite impressive on the sound side, with the exception of the background music, which is understandable given the genre of this movie.

The storyline of Perfect Blue consists of a mixture of dream and reality, resulting in an interesting psychological horror movie, which can be quite confusing at times. The storyline seems realistic with the exception of the mental connection between some characters, and the ending contains a nice twist. The storyline does clear a large amount of confusion as it progrsses, but still leaves a number of explained plotholes at the end.

The characters in Perfect Blue do lack development, but they fit in well with the storyline and their actions are realistic, and only confusing a small number of times. A high number of character motives and thoughts will be speculative due to the lack of development, but that does not damage the storyline too much.

Overall, Perfect Blue is an entertaining psychological horror with a nice degree of realism. It is quite unique as an anime, as there aren't many other anime of the same genre, and therefore is worth checking out for both veteran viewers and fans of the psychological horror genre. Personally, Perfect Blue was a nice change and had an interesting storyline. It would be highly unlikely for me to rewatch it, however.

Now I would like to call MADHOUSE movie production as second fiddle to Ghibli Studio and it trully is still. Even though Paprika came out and made a very bold statement, this movie is not really something I would like to say spectacular as
1. It has few gross scenes
2. The theme is only for those 18+ and even then not all will want to see it even though it can be depicting something real.

This is an anime about when fans start to engross themselves with the pop idol thinking themselves as being the pop idol and inflicting misery and pain and dementia to the pop idol too.

After watching this, I kind of feel like I wasted 81 minutes of my time. 81 minutes I could have spent watching a couple of GOOD anime episodes. The biggest complaint I have is that this movie lacked of everything. It wasn't thrilling, it wasn't scary, it doesn't have any likable characters as any story should have, and it definitely doesn't grab your attention too much.

There were some scenes where I felt like they were thrown in just to make it long enough to be a movie. Like the boring running scenes, or the long still shots. There was a bit of nudity thrown in too.

The basic story, in my opinion, is great...but upon reading other reviews I see that this is based on a novel. So there that goes. I'm also positive that the novel would have been a much better option instead of this wacky anime movie. The only part that redeemed Perfect Blue was the ending. It was nice to finally know what was going on. But was it worth watching the entire 81 minutes? Not really.

Perfect blue is the first major work of Satoshi Kon which established him as an anime movie director. The movie focuses on an idol star, Mima Kiragoe aka Mimarin who decides to become a full time actress. However this doesn't go down well with many of her fans. Particularly one fan called "Me-Mania" takes it upon himself to get her back. On top of this she stumbles upon a website which is confirms her suspicions that she is being stalked and getting death threats. If this wasn't enough she is now having delusions where she is seeing herself as her old self. Mima is thus going in a downward spiral. The film is a gripping edge of the seat thriller from its beginning to end.

Having seen Millennium Actress before this, I thought I knew what I was getting into, however evidently Satoshi Kon has another side to him. Clearly exhibiting the same visual style as MA, Perfect Blue is a far more controversial, visually confronting piece, one in which I enjoyed immensely.

Excuse Me. . . Who are you?

I always liked the occult anime, and this feature is no exception. I had my speculations as to whether or not this movie would actually be frightening. But it was more than I had anticipated. Not only was it frightening, it was disturbing and sickening. Perfect Blue truly is a well-done horror anime.

What is reality? What you see, hear, touch or smell is that reality? But you can feel all of those feelings in a dream or illusion. Then how are they different? If suddenly your dreams would become as real as reality and your reality would become as unreal as dreams. How would you know, what is true and what is not?

This is the first time I've seen Satoshi Kon's work, even though I heard a lot about him before, yet just after seeing this I can definitely affirm: that person is a genius. Not long ago I thought that movie format simply doesn't go with anime well, either characters don't develop enough, or story is so simple, that boring, like most of the scenic movies. Even though I've seen Ghibli's works like Nausicaa or Howl's Moving Castle before, it took Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue to destroy that opinion.

Not only the story is intense and nerve-wrecking, but it is highly intelligent as well. Furthermore it is dark, gross, terrifying, yet brilliant, similar to my beloved Monster and Boogiepop Phantom. What's even more surprising is that characters are realistic to the bone, I loved each character practically from the first sight of them, though loved doesn't necessary mean I liked them. Characters in this show like in Neon Genesis Evangelion are not likeable and that's a great thing.

If in the past you enjoyed shows like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Serial Experiments Lain, Monster or Boogiepop Phantom, then for gods sakes, watch Perfect Blue! I was lucky enough to have all of these shows as my all time favourites, now being joined by this movie. While this is not necessary the best anime out here, I have doubts there is a better anime movie, for people who are into dark and psychological things like me.

In case such as Perfect Blue, if a thriller with a mediocre plot is going to fare better on TV with real actors, then make it a movie. At least cliches in movies dont turn out that bad as they turn in animes. One of the most mediocre titles I came across.

It was interesting the first 10 minutes but then it turned boring and predictable. So what did the producers do to fight this boredom? Add some rape scenes, nude photos, violent murders, blood etc.

But the main problem is with the plot. Since it is based on a novel, I'm sure it would be much better to read the novel. Because here it is a mess. Such stories about split personalities, mysteries and confusing reality with imagination are very difficult to transfer to an anime.

On the other hand since the creator did an excellent job with Tokyo Godfathers and Millenium Actress (havent seen the latter yet) I'd advise the viewers to watch these instead.

Fortunately I rented this title or else I might have regretted it a lot.

Hmm kinda lame... I have to say it really dissapointed me.

I'll start with the story since it's the thing that bothered me the most... The story is actually very empty and lacks logic and the hole wierd and confusing atmosphere, plus the excess nudity and violence are all there to hide the lack of a coherent plot in a very cheap way in my opinion... Yes the story doesn't have any logic, it is very weak if you look it from an objective point of view as we aren't given any clue of who the murderer is, and the ending just pops up in the stupidest way possible... And NO, THIS ISN"T A PSYCHOLOGICAL movie, because it doesn't deal with people's inner feelings like NGE did for example, It's just a twisted, sadistic story with no real depth.

The characters weren't to marvelous either as only the main hero gets developed, but in a really unrealistic way. and then again we're not given any explanation about the killer's real motif and why he/she flipped out.

The animation was similar to that of Millennium Actress, but actually turned out ugly and wierd... As for the sound? well mediocre?

Don't watch it.. unless you like to get confused without any real motif behind it, and you like to see blood and nudity.

One of the better murder mystery stories out there whether talking about anime and nonanime stuff. The animation was adequate for its time, but seems slightly aged by todays standards, the same goes for the sound, the seiyuu were great but nothing memorable stuck in my mind wether the opening or ending themes nor the background music. The characters were the main point along with the story that add to the overall enjoyment and value of this title, The story was amazing but the whole sexual exploitation and the depiction made me feel somewhat uncomfortable and sorry for the main character as to what she had to go through in her new chosen industry--I don't want to spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet. This one is definately worth having in any anime collection.

I've been watching Satoshi Kon movies in un-chronologial order - I started with Tokyo Godfathers and have finally ended with Perfect Blue. That's also the order of my preference, from favourite to least favourite. That's not saying Perfect Blue is a BAD film, because that's not the case at all, not by a long shot. I'd say it's flawed. It has a good plot, good characterization, even good animation, but the direction is off. When a scene of the main character waking up is repeated three times, there's a problem. Although he insists he didn't go out of his way to confuse the viewer, there is evidence to the contrary present.

Although I must say, Perfect Blue had the most heart-stopping climax of his three films so far. This is definetly worth seeing, but I must warn it is definetly only for mature viewers. As well, this is the only Kon film I own on DVD, so I guess that says something...

This movie was a good thriller, on which I really enjoyed when I had the chance to view this a long time ago. The story was based on being a stand-alone murder mystery, with a few drama scenes on it as well. Anime movies that are involved suspense are not often too enjoyable to watch and aren’t well developed compared to this one. However, as I progressed on watching this, I thought it had some really disturbing issues on being the usual obsessive fanatic that just keeps their own cynical and warped mind on what is justified as focusing being a firm zealot within their own terms of living. These things are basically are percieved on a psychological level, more on what people are just taken things for granted as that main character whose been sympathized as being the “victim”, or the vice-versa. For that matter, these things are made to find out what makes her life worthwhile whether it is being the ideal candidate as a singer/actress, making those impressions of making her audiences inspired to those people who adored her, and most of all by what she wants, as an individual, that can be worth satisfying of making a change by finding her own personal growth. This is what I thought that had its flair in the movie, on the terms from the way people are, instead of forcing on them of what these certain people would want them to be, their own perfect world. Is our world actually perfect? Do we always think that our own views are perfect? Maybe whether if it is based on subjectivity or the fact of a certain sympathy, what can one person do to make that difference would be a lot harder than most people think. Those things that we can just cherish from the memories on what were good and had that certain bewilderment on these experiences, are the times that we can only trust within the feelings that share from our confident values. For believing everything that is just seen with one picture, which can be so easily done and be presumed of their own actions. Preferably from the idea that blindly assumes on those conditions that made something that was given worthwhile to their meaning with their lives; furthermore, convincingly making that one picture is merely an abstracted way of looking at it. As from leading itself to the misdirection on how the main character Mima, could've made herself too frantic in the long run.

The animation was reasonable for its time and had Satoshi Kon's charm that it was heavily portrayed, which I always liked. I noticed that it gave some improvements on the later movies he created. The music was not bad, but not the greatest on either way it can be given. The Seiyuu on the characters however, were greatly done that fits well with them and had some tripped out moments that were quite memorable. As for the value, I'd might watch it just for fun, and would come around with some friends and see it with a laugh or two, while seeing the obvious clues it gave throughout the whole story.

If you want to expect something more than a thriller in this movie, than just leave it. Otherwise, just take it the way it is. I thought it had some great merits on Satoshi Kon's previous works.

Whoa, tripppy....
Such a thin line between reality and fantasy, I truly was confused and I had a lot of questions. For example, during the movie
What did she make up? Which part is real? Which part was the movie? Is that creepy stalker real? What is the point of that pop idol image of herself?

This movie is definitely very engaging. I watched this whole movie in suspense as I wondered what unexpected event would happen next.

I don't really understand what the conflict is. What is the difference between being a pop idol and an actress. Does this have to do with something about the life of the stars at all? Is it a criticism of what the spotlight makes one do?

Or is there absolutely no point to this... just some random mess of some guy's imagination?

After thinking about the ending, and understanding what the whole thing was about, I thought it made this movie really dumb and worthless. Read more to see what I thought this movie was about.

EDITED REVIEW. I rewatched Perfect Blue and it was nothing like when I watched it first time. I marked all changes here, one after another. There is change in every section of More from... except sound and story. Here just enjoyment fall down by two. First time was great, now it was not, so I guess that knowing the thing makes it weaker. Also there are very small hints for You to play detective... Enjoyment 8. It's not so original also, and there are other things as well that changed since last time. Go check More...
---- end EDIT ------------------
I was watching it with a friend, who said to me: I have a thriller anime. I of course replied with all my oh! so amazing (at that time ;P) anime knowledge: That is impossible, anime is about one guy who is always wanted by all the girls there are.

So we started watching to see if a thriller genre can be adapted to anime.
And You know what? IT CAN. We enojoyed it intensely (10), there were some flaws but the whole thing is VERY original and fresh - I recommend it truly - still be warned - animation is at best decent and the style of drawing can make You back off - like my other friend did.

I had wanted to see Perfect Blue for a while now. I always had some interest in this movie; when I entered a shop I would sometimes read the synopsis on the DVD cover. Well, one day I decided I should buy it, see it and get over with it.

Unfortunately I was a bit disappointed. I'm a big fan of the thriller genre, so maybe I was expecting too much from this movie. The thing is that while it was enjoyable, I felt it lacked... something. The story was pretty simple, and it didn't make me jump or whatever it is thrillers are supposed to do. It wasn't scary, mind-blowing, or impressive. It was...ok, I guess.

I can't tell, exactly what is wrong with Perfect Blue, but I can tell it's definitely not 'perfect'. Maybe it was the music, that didn't suit the type of story, or maybe it was the characters that weren't very likable. The story itself was ok, but not the extraordinary or complex... it appeared to be, but you just have to pay a bit of attention to realize it's quite simple.

Overall, this movie was not bad. But, like I said before, it lacked something. Could have been better. It's just a standard thriller movie. But I guess, watching wouldn't harm anyone. ^^

A case of pop-singer fans resorting to extremes in response to their idol's career direction change. You don't own your career, your fans do.

This is definitely a dark twisted psycho-thriller. If you want something to keep you warm and fuzzy on a rainy day or cool and sweet on a hot day, then this is NOT for you.

The story is well executed and delivered, keeping the suspense up till the end. The story is also fairly real, as there are no bounds on how twisted some people can get.

Highly recommended if you want to stay at the edge of your seat for a couple of hours.
