I was looking for an anime that was similar to Darker Than Black and this one filled the bill nicely. Interesting story line and a good show to watch if you're looking for something new.
The plot line seems to drag on sometimes despite Noein being a only 24 episodes. A little more background on the characters or the story line would have been nice instead of covering some generally irrelevant stuff or re-using scenes over and over again. Don't get me wrong though, it was still a great show and I wouldn't mind watching it again if a friend hadn't seen it.

Potential wasted. Alternate selves from alternate dimensions shouldn't be this 'meh'. Neat art in the first coupla episodes. I managed to watch to the end, so it's not complete trash.

Noein is... well, a pretty original show, telling a tale about thousands of different dimensions, which all exist beside each other, however, are not bound by the same time-line. Therefore while travel to past or future is theoretically possible, it doesn't really effect the world you are living in in any way.

Even though the plot and setting of Noein are certainly extraordinary and well thought of, the slow pace of the anime itself and characters, which are way too young to really convey the real feeling of a complex plot drag everything down. I mean seriously, we have a story about an inter-dimensional travel, post apocalyptic parallel dimension and unidentified "things" which are laying waste to the futures of the world, yet our main character is a girl, who has not even finished her elementary school yet, geez. Oh well, either way, even though the elementary school cast blocks many ways of possible plot development, the story of this show is still pretty good, if you are able to overlook some of the more annoying childish outbursts of the characters, that is.

Hm, Noein is a pretty hard anime to recommend, I mean, who the hell is the target audience here? Adults, teens, kids? For kids the plot is too complex, for teens, well, too little fanservice, for adults the characters are too young. Ah, whatever, even with all these weaknesses the show is still pretty interesting to watch so... err, if you do not have a rock breaker ultimate anime in your watch list, like Death Note or Berserk for example, then go for this show. While you might not hold it as one of the best shows in the history of mankind, it might make you entertained for awhile and maybe think a bit.

Plot: 8.5/10

Rich in detail and very complex. The idea of different universes existing for every choice, with the you in that universe going down a different path, is truly fascinating.

I have to mark it down a little because of the slow pacing and unexplained elements of the story. However, I'm sure someone who has a better understanding of quantum physics would add 0.5 to this rating.

Characters: 9.7/10

Watching the main characters develop in Noein is different than in any other anime I've watched. You see how they *possibly* look and act in the future throughout the show (sometimes even more than one possible future version), which creates thoughts and shows the characters from different angles.

My favourite characters were not the main two (Haruka and Yuu), my favourites instead being Ai and Isami. It's both funny and cute seeing them try to hide their feelings for each other as the series progresses, Ai being a fiery red/orange-head and Isami being your average male - Unable to pick-up on signals. Isami's character is probably my favourite due to the future versions of him shown.

The only real bad character point I can think of is Yuu's character - He gets quite annoying with his attitude. The annoyance is worsened by slow plot progression.

Art: 9.5/10
Animation: 9.5/10

I can't rate art and animation accurately since I know nothing about it.

Noein looked amazing and fairly unique to me from the moment I first saw it. The start of the show showed that it obviously had quite a big budget, combining CG with excellent art and animation. The show kept up the high quality visuals until the end, although the less important episodes didn't get the attention the more important ones did.

Sound: 9/10

I'm probably being quite harsh here - The soundtrack is outstanding. The the choral battle/action music really gets you excited, the dramatic music does its job, the cute/funny music is fun to listen to... It's all great. My only reason for not rating higher is because there aren't too many tracks I'd want to listen to when not watching the series.

Total: 9.2/10

All in all, an amazing series. This is a series every anime fan should watch.

This is something of a mixed bag for me. Nothing really stand out, but there is also some good moment in it. At some time, this anime really try to be a scientific iteration about quantom but simply fail miserably to imply anything of value except theories without any background.

If you want a clearer picture, imagine Chrono Cross concept of different dimension into a new script. There you got Noein. In fact, a lot of the strong points of Noein are coming from Square Soft Chrono Cross script. Only for this, maybe it's worth taking a glimpse to Noein, but be aware that it will take a while before you see the link.

The whole concept of time exploration could have been a stronger point for the character development. In fact, on the 24 episodes, only 4 really stand out as something of great value.

A very interesting anime, mostly because they simply accepted that quantum physics was true. Science, and its implications, that is generally ignored is taken head on. Basically I'd say this is a philosopher's take on quantum science. Note that it is not a quantum scientist's take on it, and thus does not have perfect scientific accuracy. Still for not being too professional they did a good job on their research.

Noein is a very difficult anime to describe and rate. From the beginning, both its story and presentation is very different than all other animes I've ever watched. In general, Noein bases its story on pseudo-science, inter-dimensional travel, and esoteric concepts such as causality and reverse-causality. However, that aside, I enjoyed Noein mostly for its drama and action. I really liked how they crafted the story with all the mysteries in each dimension. Essentially, this anime focuses on three dimensions 1) the current one where Haruka is the Dragon Torque 2) La'cryma and 3) Shangri-La. They each carry their own story. However, there's a very thin thread that runs parallel to all of them.

I did not really watch this anime with much scrutiny. I enjoyed it at face value. I liked the drama as it was presented. I accepted the tragic storylines as they came up. I enjoyed the action scenes as they fought. While it got pretty heavy at times, I really enjoyed watching Noein for its fresh new perspective on storytelling. Essentially, the over-arching plot is that everyone is after Haruka as the dragon torque in order to gain happiness and to overcome trouble in their own dimension. Meanwhile, the current dimension is developing technology to gain access to inter-dimensional travel while the potential future dimensions are trying to go back into the past to 'cure' their problems due to unhappiness with their current situation.

When it all comes down to it, Noein seems like another story that deals with 'existence' and what it means to be 'alive' and whether we have control over our own 'fates'. Nevertheless, it focuses very well on the individual stories of each dimension as they mingle. What was most riveting was how it focused on the same characters in each dimension. It truly felt like misfortune was inevitable... and it made me wonder how the story would end.

Due to the heavy nature of the storyline, I would definitely one day want to watch this again. Now that I understand what is going on, I can finally go back with a fine-toothed comb and pick out the details of each scene. This story really is made well and feels very thought out. When I watched Noein, I felt like I was truly in a different world. I was very captivated by all the characters, especially Haruka, and it truly was an emotional roller coaster. Another attribute of the story is that the essential concept is very simple and straightforward despite all the weird things that happen. But I really enjoyed it when all the pieces finally came together. There are a lot of things left open like... what exactly was the process that brought about the creation of Shangri-La, but since it isn't the central idea... it's fine.

There are a few weaknesses, but I feel like they're mostly pet peeves and personal preferences. Haruka is a strong enough central character that I felt that all the flaws and lack of focus of the other characters were because Haruka was so strong. The storyline may be a bit confusing and a bit excessive due to all the pseudo-science, but I feel that the heart of the story is very intriguing. The animation feels a bit alien and weird in the beginning, but I quickly adjusted. There's definitely a lot here to enjoy. Noein is definitely something to watch if you enjoy pseudo-science, inter-dimensional travel, questioning fate, and a little drama.

This is actually quite a good anime. It has lots of quantum physics in the episodes, and it might help if you understand that and particle accelerators before watching this, though the anime does give you some physics classes in it. This is more of back to the future movie but everything relies on one person, not a car like the delorion.

What really shocks me is that had Noein cut itself off at episode 12 and tacked on a brief ending at 13, I probably would have a fantastic review for it. But alas, despite Noein's incredibly promising first half, it really falls apart in ALL respects in the second half. It's sad, really. Noein had SO much potential (and I don't say that lightly -- it could have been one hell of a series) but it just ended up butchering itself.

In fact, one of my biggest bitches with Noein is it's animation. In the first few episodes we have some awesome, smooth CG that does not feel out of place. Immediately, however, the character designs jump out at you as not all that impressive. Not great but tolerable, and actually fit the anime fairly nicely. What really pissed me off, though, was the blatant amount of animation cheating toward the second half of the series. We literally have a guy who is supposed to be a villain who looks like a cartoon. There is absolutely no excuse for this aside from a horrid budget, and had they cut Noein back to 13 episodes and used the other 11 episodes worth of production to further the 13 it could have been much better. Definitely needed changes here, just didn't cut it.

I really liked the sound in Noein, however. The BGM gave the pseudo-epic feel to the whole time jumping theme which is a definite plus. I loved the opening theme and the ending was fairly good as well. I would have rated the Seiyuu a point higher (the main characters have very good voice actors) but the caste of side characters was done very poorly. I felt like burning Miho alive. All in all, however, done well.

I really cringe at how bad the story turned in the second half. The beginning of Noein, however, is brilliant. While the parallels between the past and the future are nothing new, the way the characters react to what happens is certainly very interesting. I really like the exploration of the idea of looking back at the past, as initially La'Cryma's dragonknights have no qualms about recovering the Dragon Torque. When they find out that is it Haruka, however, their gung-ho idealism quickly falters. Is it right to destroy your past and relive your pain in order to preserve the future? The answers Noein explores are certainly fascinating and I took a great fondness toward right off the bat.

However, the creators didn't know when to quit. Just when things were getting good they decided to turn the last 8 episodes into some Buddhist philosophical BS. What really annoyed me about this is that suddenly all the 3 dimensional characters become flat. I fast forwarded most of the last 2 episodes because I couldn't take it anymore. I had high hopes for what the possibilities of Shangri'la might be despite my early fears (there are many eastern religious symbols early on...I tried not to make too much of them) but in the end I was utterly disappointed.

I really liked Haruka as a heroine, however. She retained her depth from beginning to end and I really was able to connect with her character. Yuu and Karasu were also very well designed. The problem is, as I briefly mentioned before, is that as well as these two characters are developed, they ultimately fall apart. I swear they just had one recording for Karasu that said "I will protect Haruka!" in the last batch of episodes. Yuu became shallow (and pedantic!) and I was turned off by his stupidity. It felt like his character went through a bell curve, regressing back to dumb by the end.

The caste of side characters are my biggest gripe, though. I don't feel like saying much other than I hated Miho more than I hated Haruhi from Melancholy of Suzumiya. And seriously, what the hell was up with Atori?

Despite all my complaints, however, Noein is overall a decent series. It's beginning half to two-thirds are oustanding, I just hate when such good shows degrade so quickly. You wouldn't go wrong in checking it out.

Recommended.

Noein is hard file under any particular genre. It's got romance, horror, action and a unique setting based on the many-worlds interpretation of quantum theory that also makes this series an exploration of our own reality.
All in all, Noein is an extremely well balanced series that shines in pretty much all of it's aspects, be it the story, the graphics or the sound.
Highly recommended.

i began this series with average hopes. overall, it seemed to be one of those 'above average' animes with nothing really special in particular. it was true up to about episode 12, the anime so far, although not bad, wasn't anything super special. that was until afterwards...then things started to speed up

i can imagine a few people that would be turned off by Noein because of the begining slow start. i almost became one of these unfortunate people; the thing is, everything that happens is happening for a REASON. all the little 'confusing' bits will, i promise you, tie together IN the end. of course, no one realizes this until more towards the end, but just believe me.

the animation is probably the weakest part of the series. still, because of the beautiful backgrounds and CGs, everything is made up. also, the down times are really not that bothering.

the sound is above average, but nothing spectacular. what makes this anime truly above above average is the story and execution. honestly, the reason why this anime is so amazing is the way the story flows so naturally throughout the series. also, i love animes with dark themes and thought provoking materials.

the ending was amazing. i think the last 4-5 episodes of the series really made up for any possible letdown towards the beginning. i truly enjoyed the multiple dimensions and theories of making choices in your life.

essentially: a combination of sci fi and drama. if you can stick all the way to the end, i'm sure you'll see why this is a winner. not exactly one of the best animes of the year, but i have absolutely no regrets investing time into this one (and keep in mind, i'm not exactly a science fiction fan)

This is an incredible anime series that is very thought provoking as it is full of depth, and accentuated by some great action sequences.

Noein borders on hard sci-fi, but is more user friendly, and as such I highly recommend it to you other anime fans.

This is now one of my all time favorite anime. Noein is absolutely amazing in every category except for animation, just because the style really didn't appeal to me much.

As for sound, once again, amazing. A lot of effort was put into the episodic songs as well as the OP and ED (even though I didn't feel as if the ED really fit that well with the anime). However, all of the other good songs in the anime quickly countered that small fact. I immediately got the OST after I finished watching the series (Lol).

The story, surprisingly, delves into the very complicated study of quantum physics, which is usually a bad thing for anime, because the creators don't put much research into complex subject matter. Noein's makers did their homework though, and even though they really just scratched the surface of the science (and they threw in a bit of super-natural stuff), so that most audiences would be able to understand, almost everything fit together, so by the end, Noein had a near-perfect story.

In the character department, Noein does not falter whatsoever. The only main character that doesn't get much background (but still has depth, of course) is Miho, but her history is completely irrelevant to the story. Everyone, has much depth and can really be noticed as people, and not just drawings on a screen.

Value is very good. There are many things I wish to catch on my second time around on this series, including some points in the story as well as some VERY entertaining and suspenseful fights and clashes between characters.

Finally, as you can see enjoyment is a perfect 10 because I absolutely love this anime.

I will most definitely recommend this to anybody who watches anime and (except for maybe a couple of annoyances with the animation) I promise you will not be disappointed.

Just as a note, episode 22 is an utter masterpiece. The episode brought me to tears. This is one of very few anime that has done that.

I had enjoyed myself very much watching this anime. It featured a storyline that I found extremely fascinating and not to mention unique. Despite the fact that the art style did not appeal much to me, it captured my attention right to the end of the series.

For those who lament that many animes do not have a decent storyline, this is a must watch.

Animation
----
The drawing style of this anime had not appealed to me. It's fightning scenes varied from bold lines to American comic styled drawings in its fighting scenes. While the ships of the enemies had been in detail, I found it lacked severly. It seemed to me that the artist of the anime had been tired drawing and while the drawing of characters had improved, certain parts of the presentation had been a let down.

It combines a mixture of 3d and drawings which seemed strange at first but it blended very well.

Sound
----
The soundtrack of this anime was pleasant to listen to by itself. It was able to convey emotions without much support from the animation. This helped the anime to convey the emotions it could not achieve.

Character
----
As for character development wise, this anime had not clearly or may not even have development some of its main characters. However this is pretty common for most animes. It did however make an effort to develop some of its characters which in the end result makes the characters more likable and more realistic. I even found myself liking a character that I had disliked in the first half.

Character Design wise, it had been overall simplistic, allowing its plot and unique storyline to shine.

Story
----
Noein's storyline is fantastic. Its depth of research is obvious. On first impressions, it was hard to understand the theories that brought the story about, but the anime slowed down to explain repeatedly in easy terms for its viewers to swallow making the anime easy to watch. The base line of the story is matchless even when compared to other Sci-Fi animes.

While general plot, save the world, exists, it is hidden by its many subplots, making the anime appearingly less cliche than others. The story twists and turns unexpectedly making you constantly wonder what would happen next and making you get shocked at an unexpected twist.

A general amount of anime has cliche, lame, bad or <insert descriptive word here> endings. However for Noein I found the ending was pretty decent. It was not fantastic but definitely above average. The only lamentable thing is that the ending was too aburpt. The end effect nevertheless makes you crave to know more and possibly the effect the creators had tried to create.

Value
-----
Its enjoyable to watch and re-watching. However after its plot is revealed, it leaves you wanting to know more.

If i was younger I would simply LOVE this anime. I rated it how I would rate if I was younger, because this show is ultimately aimed towards the 14-18 year olds. It's got a handful of cliches but the orginal storyline and likeable characters more then make up for it.

It is an anime for the relatively younger 'thinking' anime fan. It touches on a lot of more serious topics. From quantum physics, death, family, passage of time to the unavoidable friendship and love. Not to say it's philosophical series, it still contains a lot of action scenes. Maybe that's the only problem with the series, it tried to be everything.

After watching Noein I have to say that it could have been much better if it had more serious characters and was less action-oriented. The story was most apropriate for a hit.

Unfortunately while it features a very original story (considering this is one of the hundreds commercial anime series out there), at the same time it falls into the cliches that would make this anime unwatchable to me if it hadnt that kind of story. Were I a little younger I'd be impressed by the cliche scenes and would rate it higher.

Of course an original story doesnt mean that it isnt absurd, considering it deals with quanta theory. While I have only very basic knowledge about that matter it suffices to convince me that the way this is depicted in the anime from a realistic point of view is completely absurd. But if you watched movies like ''Butterfly Effect'' and ''P'' (Greek letter) such stories can be very exciting. In Noein I dont see why the rest of the timespaces and multiple universes should have any similarity to the current one. And how is it feasible for the characters to meet the versions of their future selves. But ignoring this (among the many, even within the quanta theory itself) absurdity the story works well and guarantees some unexpected twists. Though it could have been used better but they wanted to make an anime for teens and not more mature viewers. If you ignore the quanta theory you'll have the typical anti-hero who wants to save the girl of his childhood, the typical bad guy turned to good guy, the detective with his female partner, the childhood friend turned to enemy, the final typical encounter , all of this seen in many animes today (especially shounen).Only episode 23 was good. Generally the anime started well and quickly got one-sided. In every episode the Dragon Torque activates till something happens and deactivates. They overdid it.

The characters were typical for a teens anime and werent worth remembering and if they were they were given too little screen time. With the exception of Haruka and Tobi who had very good voice actresses, the rest were average, cliched and not well used. With better characters the anime could have been much better.

The animation reminded me of experimental anime and was unique. In fact it gave the anime enjoyment a few boosts, even making the action scenes good. It is just that I'm not fond of action scenes to be used in an excessive rate.
Except the CGI that were too much for me to like. Watchable OP and ED for a few episodes too.

I found that the music they chose was inappropriate. All that vocal ruckus could have been replaced with techno or something similar, especially in the battle scenes. Despite that the music and sfx production value was high

Now overall I'd recommend this title for watching once at least and it is worth buying the DVDs that could increase the enjoyment rate instead of the low-quality fansubs. One thing that makes this stand above the rest is the animation (very few 24 episode animes use that style) and the story. Quanta theory found a representative in anime, though I wish some other similar titles would follow that corrected the mistakes of this title. But dont feel so anxious if you cant watch it right away

It took Noein 30 seconds capture my attention. The first sight of Shangri La's ship was enough to convince me that it would a cool series.

That's a good starting point. The design of Shangri-La's ships is amazing. They look very original as does the whole series. Character designs look very unusual and maybe not as attractive as in your usual anime series but they really bring out the personality and feelings of the characters. There is also much great effects, for example the shift in colors when time stops in the series. Adding to this some gorgeous animation, especially when there's fighting going on. Only minus comes from "standard animation" that sometimes look very rushed. But the fascinating look compensates for this nicely.

So what's happening in this great world? Basically Noein is story of paraller universes (time-spaces) and their inhabitants meeting while fighting a mysterious Shangri-La that is trying to merge all time-spaces together. At the center of all this a girl from our world, Haruka, who has the ability to control reality and change it. She and her friends play a critical role in every time-space. I liked the story a lot. It has people questioning their destinies and what they really are. Mixed with this is a lot of quantum physics that they use explore these questions. I know some quantum physics and I could follow most of the conversations. I don't know how solid the theories were but I do love this idea of an observer setting the reality to what it is. Because if there is no one to observe, how can there be anything certain? Or something. I was really lost to this question pondering it over and over again and never reaching a conclusion. Boggles the mind. Anyhow the story is sometimes a bit jumpy as action orientated episodes switch with character development but as a whole it's a good balanced show that makes you want to see the next episode as fast as possible (note: fansubs are never fast enough). Okay, the ending wasn't as grand as I hoped it to be but it served its purpose.

The characters are a solid bunch too. The main character Haruka isn't really the focus of the show. She isn't that much developed but she's gathers everyone else around with her kindness. She the friend everyone should have. The other kids aren't developed that much either but we get a good look at how they think and work with different problems. I think the development goes mostly on with adults, especially the ones from different worlds (not to forget Yuu's mom). Their attitudes and behaviour changes greatly during the series as they have contact with our world and their relationships aren't simple either. These characters really bring out really dramatic moments and managed to touch me quite a bit. There are a lot of different motivations for what the characters do and even if their actions seem unreasonable, their reasons never are. Brightest example of the drama is the end of episode 12. Did that blew me away or what? Answer: yes.

One thing is left to mention and that's the music. It's used sparingly but when it's on it fits the mood perfectly making drama more dramatic and action more intense. Good voice acting tops the cake.

Noein is a very enjoyable series. The characters are very nice and even if the story loses its direction from time to time and doesn't end with true satisfaction, it's still very captivating. Combining this with interesting animation and great music makes Noein something of must-watch for anime fans into scifi.

Here is an anime series that seriously got snubbed under the radar in 2005. Noein deserves much attention from any and all anime lovers. Even with its bad ending and slightly annoying usage of characters, this anime really should be considered along with one of the best animes. Although not good enough to be truly great, this anime comes very close to doing something truly special.

The discussion of this anime has to start with animation. It's unique, vibrant, smooth, exciting, and a lot more. Although character designs were not really to my taste, this anime have so much style I love glaring at this anime the whole time. Actions scenes are feast for the eyes! Flying things with bursting light and al those things sometimes are overwhelming, but that doesn't stop the fight scenes from being fun. CG works are overall very well used and itnegrated superbly except for the shots where they show houses. I thought all the CG house shot were a bit over done. Sometimes just quite still shot is just as good as fancy CG.

Add to the animation, this anime have great music. OP was decent and ED was also decent. What really is good ar ethe background music. The action scene music is perfect and awesome in making this anime so much more exciting. Music really is central part of this anime's presentation. its classical pieces are just fantastic to the overall mood of this anime.

But even with great presentation it would be hard for a series to be good without good story and characters. This anime does have both. The story line uses quantum theory to build its mystery and suspence. I'm no scientist and I have to say I got confused when they babbled about technological stuff. But when you get passed that this is wonderful story about people futures, destinies, and one freedom to explore their own future. Future is insecure and it may unknown, but that's what make future so exciting. All these character are struggling with that insecurities of the future.

that the theme and the theme works really well overall. But pacing really is not. It starts out great. and then slow down a little bit. It back up but it slows down again. And it rushes WAY TOO MUCH in the end. Why couldn't they managa it a little better? Why couldn't they have couple more episodes? I don't know obviously but the pacing clearly needed more work.

Characters are mixture of good and bad. I really like all the side characters. From the Shangri'la's masked man, to all the dragon knights, there is no lack of interesting characters. However to me Yuu came out a bit annoying. I mean the guy is a main character but he never really assumes any real important role. Karasu takes up way to much importance in comparison to Yuu who really just stand by and do nothing. He does have a great episodes that relate to his mother, but that's about it. Haruka is always very very positive. For some reason her optimism came out a bit fake to me, and couldn't really get myself to like her.

Now this is just personal analysis of the plot and characters and there gonna be a bit of spoiler so don't read if you don't want spoilers. The very central conflict between the scientific aspect and the characters kind of ruin the solidarity of this anime. Because the anime is set on multi-universe settine. there are many worlds along side the world that the characters live it. There are variety of futures that can happen. Haruka clearly falls in love with Karasu who is future Yuu. but she does not fall in love with Yuu of the present. But she think fifteen years after Yuu would be Karasu. Which means Haruka never truly had a feeling for Yuu, but only Karasu of a specific possible future. all the people in the different universes are not the same, but this anime forces the idea that it is towards the very end with Karasu and Yuu. It kind of contradicts itself. Watch it and think about this... I just felt bad for Yuu.

This anime really good. Even with its bad ending and some annoying character uses I think this anime is entertaining and fun to watch. Its mystery works superbly well throughout and the the plot is exciting enough to hook you in for 24 episodes. This anime got snubbed under big time. Make sure you pick this one up and watch it.
