This is one of the best anime movies ever made. Princess Mononoke has the whole package. There are enjoyable characters, beautiful animation, and an excellent storyline. There is also a great soundtrack. Not only is this anime enjoyable, but it relates a message about nature which people try to overlook. You can watch the movie just for the nice outdoor scenes, or you can watch it for the extensive plot. One of Miyazaki's finest movies.

One of the older productions by Studio Ghibli, but can still be considered as one that does not fail to live up to today's audiences. Another great work by Studio Ghibli, you'll find plenty of things about this anime. Please read on for full review!

I think my favorite part about this movie is how Ashataki uses the pendant he gets from the girl in his home village to win over San's heart. Not only is he a savior of man and nature, but he's also a player, and a pretty damn sly one at that. What else could you ask for in your ideal hero?

For a 1997 production, the animation in Mononoke Hime is impressive. The entire movie flows together very well with fluid flamerates and has few, if any, places where it cheats with repeated frames. My only gripe with character designs is that they all look somewhat similar, most especially the women at the ironworks. Aside from this, we've got a lot of well-drawn scenery to top it all off, so there's really not much to complain about; high quality all the way around. It's sad to think that something like came out ten years ago and still has better animation that more recent series (since I feel like taking a cheap shot...Aishiteru Baby, for instance).

The insert music is fantastic as well. Like many movies of similar type, the music gives the anime a somewhat epic feel to it, which definitely fits it quite well. The basic premise follows that ou hero is cursed and must leave home on a journey to lift his curse and save the world -- certainly nothing original, but the dramatic music makes it feel a lot less cliche and a lot more involving. The Seiyuu wasn't bad either, but Mono had the voice of an elderly man despite supposedly being the mother of the wolves; that never did settle with me. Ashitaku and San's voice actors both did a great job, though, which is where it really counts. Overall a good job in this department, as you definitely feel as if you're part of Ashitaku's heroic journey yourself; immersiveness always is a good sign.

Not much to say about the story, really. It's a typical movie plot, as I mentioned before, where a boy sets out from his village to free his curse and ends up saving the world. I paid little heed to the whole attempted seriousness of the nature versus man conflict and just enjoyed it for what it is. At times it could be surprisingly graphic, though, and that certainly was a shock; just about every arrow shot in the movie takes off an arm (or two) or a head. Aside from this, you won't be shocked or left with mouth agape at any point throughout the movie. Like all epics, the interest is in how the story is told, not how depthful it might be.

Oh yeah, as far as characters go, despite saying "hatred breeds more hatred!" quite a few times, Ashitaku, thankfully, wasn't a pansy who refused to lift a finger in fear of breaking a nail. Many series should take lessons from him for the lame-pacifistic moron archetype, as here we actually have a hero who strives for peace but realizes it doesn't come free of bloodshed. He made a likable and believable hero, which is absolutely essential in shaping movies like this into successes. I'm not quite sure why the movie is named after San and not Ashitaku, though, since San's role in the movie is relatively minimal compared to his; we aren't even really introduced to San until halfway through. Aside from Ashitaku, though, nobody else really worthy of mention. Before I wrap this up, one more thing to note about characters: the deer god looks absolutely retarded...just had to get that out there. It's important to go into a movie mentally prepared if demented deer gods are present, so make sure you take such precautions here. They are known for causing seizures from time to time...

Ultimately, one of those "must see" anime movies. That pretty much sums it up. It's a fantastic production that went above my expectations and definitely is worth a watch. Quite deserving of its popularity.

Recommended.

Princess Mononoke is a 2 hour long Studio Ghibli movie made in 1997 with an interesting and exciting cast and storyline.

The animation is once again top class. The incredible detail of the backgrounds and smooth animation of even the tiniest of movements make Princess Mononoke a pure pleasure to watch. For 1997, Studio Ghibli, once again, produced a movie of the highest quality.

The quality of the soundtrack and sound effects are also quite high in this movie. The voice actors do a good job, making the movie as impressive to listen to as it is to watch.

The storyline of Princess Mononoke is fast paced and exciting. Although the general feel of the storyline might be a bit short, and it does get quite contradictory, if not confusing, at the end, the rest of the movie is very enjoyable to watch. Some parts of the movie might not be suited for very young viewers, but then again, viewers of that age probably won't understand the story anyway.

The cast of characters is interesting and their actions are fun to watch. Although the abilities of some characters seem to make not much sense at some points in the movie, and some characters lack development, it by no means deteriorates the enjoyment of Princess Mononoke.

Princess Mononoke is an excellent anime movie, and no doubt the best at its time. Despite the slightly disappointing ending, it will probably be greatly enjoyed by almost everyone.

Princess Mononoke is a tale of modern man vs. nature. In this movie you get some good action, decent animation and music, and a well scripted storyline. I recomend this anime to everyone, even those that don't usually like or watch anime.

When I first saw this movie, I was so inspired. This movie has many deep meanings (that I am sure could be debated by many people) and it caused me to think about our world today.

The main theme seems to be: hatred only causes destruction. This movie is set in ancient times when Gods and demons walked the earth. It focuses on the struggle between the Gods, whose purpose is to protect the forests and wild life, and the humans, who are developing new technology that destroys the environment. Some Gods have become enraged and turn into demons, weapons of hatred inflicting destruction on anything in their path. Ashitaka is caught between this battle between the Gods and humans when he is cursed by a demon. He remains unbiased and chooses to "see with eyes unclouded by hate."

This movie really made me think about the lifestyle of developed countries (for example, Canada, the United States, Austrailia, Japan, etc). How have the recent developments in technology affected our lives? (Considering how long humans have been around, depending on your beliefs of course, I would say this is recent.) We have designed computers and other electronic devices to do our work for us. This can affect our vision and motor function (carpel tunnel syndrome) and reduces our need for exercise. The concept of "fast-food" started taking foot when women entered the work force. This has its own health implications. Just within recent years, obesity has grown rapidly and cardiovascular disease rates one of the most common causes of death in Canada. Our technology allows us to live longer, but are we really living better? The way we live does impact the environment as well. Just look at the Global warming issues and you will see that our CO2 production is causing many complications on our planet.

I am sorry if this offends anyone or if people find this annoying. This really isn't meant to be preachy. I just wrote what I felt about this movie and the world. This is only what I feel is important and is not meant to be a lecture.

The first truly magnificent anime movie I had ever watched, Princess Mononoke is a must-see for all movie fans, whether they are anime fans or not.

The animation is very well done, and for the time it was spectacular. You won't find any flaws in either the character designs or backgrounds, and the detail is amazing.

The sound is a grea part of this anime, with the orchestral soundtrack and hauntingly beautiful almost surreal songs really enhancing the epic nature of this anime.

The story was amazing; Princess Mononoke did a great job of emphasizing both sides of the conflict between man and nature, rather than picking one side. The story is as complex as the real life issues of man vs. nature are, and every aspect of the story, from Ashitaka's journies to the tribulations of the people of iron town and Mononoke herself are explored.

The line between good and evil is blurred in this anime; the movie takes a stance on neither the side of man nor the side of nature as the flaws in both are revealed and the story progresses.

The characters are amazing. Ashitaka is a very deep and complex character who attempts to take a neutral stance regarding the war between man and nature, and above all these concerns is the factor of his own mortality due to the nature of his curse. Mononoke is also a very interesting and complex character, representing the nature side of the war as a girl adopted by wolves who can not forgive the humans for their trespasses against nature, but respects Ashitaka for his beliefs.

Other supporting characters like the strong-willed leader of Iron Town, Lady Eboshi, and the wolf-God mother of Princess Mononoke are also well developed and interesting.

I truly enjoyed this anime, and have rewatched it dozens of times; this is an emotionally gripping and dramatic anime that is easily one of the top 5 best anime movies of all time, and probably among the top 50 or 100 movies in general of all time.

Princess Mononoke was my first anime predating Naruto by 3 years or so. And it blew my mind away. From the very minute it starts Miyazaki Hayao's masterpiece had me in glued to the screen till the very last minute. Only Studio Ghibli's works can actually entrance you and take you to another world - In this case, the world of Princess Mononoke.

Animation
As expected from Studi Ghibli (as I learnt later, all their works are brilliantly animated.) The sceneries had me entranced. And the characters were also drawn with a unique smootheness. Top notch stuff.

Story
Enchanting, captivating, enthralling (add other adjectives you can think of and you you would have described the story.)

The story of Princess Mononoke differs from other Miyazaki's works in the sense of being more dark and more adultlike. The theme is similar to that of Nausicaa but dealt with a much more serious tone. The plot deals with the incompatibility of the humans with nature. Mononoke also differs from other films in the sense that there is no bad guy, all the characters are good - they just do not get along. This makes the film very effective in putting it's message through.
There is also a sizeable amount of action and gore in the movie as well.

Sound
Beautiful does'nt even get close to decribing it. The music is splendid, and the few songs in between are enchanting.
My only regret was that I saw the enghlish dubbed version. Don't be fooled though, The coice actors include a splendid starcast of Claire Daines, Billy Bob Thronton, gillian Anderson etc. And they have done a marvellous job. Still wish I had seen the subbed version though....

Character
As with Miyazaki Hayao's work all the characters are like rock solid. The Iron lady, Ashitaka etc. are all brilliant with each of their characters only bolstering the splendid story.

Value
One of the gems in Japanese anime, this will go down with Perfect Blue, Spirited Away, Akira etc.

Enjoyment
I want to give it a 20 - alas that option is not available.

I remember when I wanted to watch Princess Mononoke on cinema while I was in London 3 years ago. It would be better on cinema. Unfortunately all tickets were sold since there was only one screening. And the majority of the viewers were children. So I guess they wouldnt have minded the scenes of decapitation and cut limbs. Thats why I missed the opportunity and I saw it on my PC screen. But this doesnt do the anime justice. This is meant for cinema. Just like Spirited Away. The magic is lost on DVD.

Anyway in technical aspects this is perhaps on of the best movies of the 90's. Now for the meaning and the philosophical substance of this anime I still hold my reservations. In order to understand it it is usefull to add two quotes of Mr Miyazaki I found on a web page dedicated to this anime. Namely:

"We are not trying to solve [modern] global problems. There cannot be a happy ending in the fight between raging gods and humans. However, in the middle of the hatred and killings, there are things worth living for. A wonderful meeting or a beautiful thing can exist."

and
"The world is profound, manifold and beautiful... Although the world is beset with lots of seemingly intractable problems such as population explosion and environmental disruptions, making it difficult to entertain hope, it is nevertheless a wonderful thing to live."

from http://lavender.fortunecity.com/attenborough/487/

so that sums up Princess Mononoke and Nausicaa as well. It is that simple. Nothing is forced on the viewers by this anime. I guess the anime tries to present the arguments of both sides. In the anime of Nausicaa not so much but in the manga of Nausicaa and the anime of Mononoke certainly. I guess I'll just watch without taking sides. Rather I'd take the best elements of both and try to keep the balance.

Thats why all the characters arent that freely developed. Each one represents a different view and they act like that view's mouthpiece. The story isnt that fluid. After the visual and musical impression branded on my memory I really have to ponder if the story should really be this way. In the manga of Nausicaa I didnt mind since there was plenty of room for many other things. But in the two hours of this anime they should have left some more room for character developement (whether humans or animals) and not just the astounding animated sequences.

But despite this it leaves its mark. But maybe not the way I was used to in other Ghibili films.

What first drew me to this anime is Hayao Miyazaki's epic manga work 'Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind'. It is there that I have got the sense of what Mr.Miyazaki is trying to tell us, that there is no distinct definition of good and evil, that everything is relative, upside down even in terms of differing perspectives, and of course, in pure Miyazaki brand of subtlety of fingernails to a chalkboard, nature is great and will no longer tolerate the foolish encroaching humans...someday it will unleash a horde of giant literate insect-looking creatures to trample us all!

All joking aside, Prince Mononoke clearly shows what some obstinate mind can achieve in deliberately milking his agenda set against every little last bit of setting that could be conceived.

There is no 'evil' to relinquish to save the day; there is no clear achievement on the part of the protagonist. There is no clear resolution, and left me with a sense of bewilderment and being mildly perturbed enough to maybe to try probing what Miyazaki was possibly thinking before I resigned that it was not worth the effort. Particularly because there was absolutely no way for me to even 'imagine' any means of a definite conclusion within the world envisioned by Mr.Miyazaki’s mind. It is almost akin to try understanding a new language.

Perhaps as with the ilk of the movie such as 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon', this anime clearly piqued the audience on this side of the pond by purporting it to have a sense of novelty. Quite some novelty indeed, as it seems that Mr. Miyazaki needlessly went for the gore, showing some destructive power of how a decapitated head can be lopped off and the like, sometimes showing his artful rendition of what the famous tentacle rape transpires in his creative domain. Quite a dark turn for him, but does this make the quintessential message be any poignant or lasting? No. The film garnered the most revenue next to 'Titanic' in Japan, by the way. That is the difference of culture, in which the Japanese regard animation as a very serious medium that remains to be profitable without peddling it merely as some puerile entertainment.

I admit that Mr.Miyazaki's imagination can spin some vivid realization of pure enchantment, like he still has that child in him, full of stories that he cannot wait to unleash. The forest is drawn with stunning detail and the surroundings of Japanese mountainside and its geographical features seem to take a life of its own. But it is a bit hackneyed, as he seems to be retreating to a formulaic approach to character design (both storywise and graphically). Pricess Mononoke looks a bit like a cross between Nausicaa and Kushana (perhaps mirroring the said characters even in personality), and Ashitaka curiously resembles Asbel. And almost all the female bellow workers are rendered in a manner that seems to represent a cohesive and collective organism. Only Mr.Miyazaki’s creations get a benefit of doubt and even earn, at least from me, the introspection of some drawn out insight (might as well be a whole load of phooey) to buoy him. Oh that Miyazaki, he is utterly infallible!

If the viewers are not willing to partake in the vision that is defined with Miyazaki and view the animation with a stoic, grounded reality often familiar with Western audience, this anime will be nothing but a haphazard and silly tale of absurdist fantasy spun from some ridiculous agent of a PETA equivalent for a bunch of plants. Of course, the movie may confound some people who are averse to various Japanese mythos, a healthy serving of which are included in the anime to help Mr.Miyazaki's vision more resonating with his preliminary audiences (who may understand why the Hime’s hair is, like, green and why her teeth are not, like, black).

The biggest flaw in the anime would be that it is trying to enumerate almost everything that is Mr.Miyazaki's philosophy on life. If they don’t have the Miyazaki stamp of approval, they simply got to go. By the same token, one can only put so much definition in a two hour movie. Just like in his celebrated manga 'Nausicaa' and as mentioned already, Mr.Miyazaki dispenses with some definite references for evil and good. However, this approach cannot keep his characters in the movie from being horrendously static, with nary a room for development.

You just get that unfailing sense that, even after the entire ‘Tatara Ba’ is kaput, humans will forge another means of destroying the nature (as they did apparently if you look around you). It is bound to occur without fail and notice, this pointless conflict between humans and nature; after all, aren't we ourselves part of nature itself?. Here I go again attributing some needless thoughts of mine that may be totally irrelevant, but human history in and of itself has been rather pointless; Was Mr. Miyazaki suddenly pessimistic in this regard? Alas, even the relationship between San and Ashitaka ends in a blur of irrevocable end. The ending is deftly disposed of and without a doubt anti-climatic after all that transpired in the film of considerable scope.

Yeah, that was what has been bothering me about this anime. Princess Mononoke is without a certain resolution. It is a rather depressing or pointless story mired by hapless and static characters only rising up to the occasion to resolve a dilemma, however monumental it may be. Then they all go to sleep until reincarnated in one of future Miyazaki works; nothing would be changed in the least, so don’t hold your breath.

Ooo what is this? Miyazaki seem to have raised the age group of his targetted audience. If it wasn't the knowledge that I had before hand, I doubt I could have identified this as Miyazaki's work. In fact the only thing that might have given it away is design of the main character, who reminded me a bit of Haku from Spirited Away.

Compared to the other Miyazaki films I've seen, this is a rather gruesome piece of work. You could feel there was something different with this one from the explosive beginning. The sight of the demon boar charging through the forest covered in those... maggot like things was enough to make me shudder inwardly. From there on, brutality does not let up. People with their arms/head/<insert body part here> separated from the rest of the body; men and beast being slaughtered on the battlefield etc all contribute in giving this anime a rather "heavy" feel.

That's not the only difference either. Another thing that caught my attention is that it's not a typical Miyazaki main cast. First and formost, the main character is a boy, and the girl is the one taking the back seat in this anime. In fact, the Princess Mononoke's involvement in the anime isn't that great at all, so I don't know why the title is named after her.

Despite these differences, other elements that tend to come with Miyazaki works is also firmly embedded in this film. The titanic soundtrack that gives this work such an epic feel, the strange but wonderful "monster" disigns, and, of course that all important heavy magical element that runs through pretty much all his work. Interestingly enough, the sci-fi aspect is missing here. Instead, the story takes place during times when guns are only a newly developed weapon.

Another thing to note is the complexity of the storyline. I don't think I ever recall such complexity in a Miyazaki film - they always have a wonderful, imaginative adventure story, but I cannot really see much beyond that. However, THIS anime has more depth. This has often been compared with Nausicaa, but I didn't really get why until recently. Now I see the similarity in them - it's because the two have a common theme of humans vs nature. However, in Princess Mononoke, it's less clear cut who is the in wrong. Everyone is just basically doing their best to survive in the harsh enviroment, and it's hard to fault anyone for what they're doing, not the iron works people, rejects of society who finally found their place, and but have to cut down the forest in order to keep their place, nor the forest gods, who are only trying to prevent their home from being destroyed.

At the end of the day, after all the bloody slaughter, nothing was solved. A solution isn't what this anime has to offer, only hope. The hope that the groups involved (or what's left of them) can find a way of living in harmony. I found the ending to be more of a realistic one than a fairy tale one in which everyone lives happily ever after, and I like it :)

Having made first contact with Studio Ghibli through Spirited Away and followed up with the likes of Kiki's Delivery service, my impressions of Miyazaki and Ghibly's work has always been good, but not amazing. I've never really been that drawn into these animes, and felt that, despite the flawlessness of the animes, they just "weren't my thing". However, the last few Ghiblis that I have watched (and also the rewatching of Grave of the Fireflies) all captivated my attention totally. This anime also shows that my impression that Miyazaki has gone into "safe mode" with his later works to be wrong, or at least not completely right. Cos this one is one of his later works, but I'd definitely put it in my top 3 Ghibli's. It's the 3rd one to break the magical 8/10 score barrier... good job!

the voices of minnie driver and gillian anderson give it a nice touch. the message is great. the weak link is that i found that the characters are sotr of cliche (japanese traditional). still great music, much better animation than in kiki's special delivery and quite a nice story

It's a desent anime and i don't regret watching it but i wouldn't do it again. But don't take me wrong it's worth watching at least once.

The whole story and ending mix together ok and you kind of get pissed at some characters for doing something to other characters so it is kind of gripping.

Definitely another great movie by Miyazaki-sensei. The story shows the conflict beween nature and humans, and how both must find a way to live peacefully together in order to keep from completly destroying everything. It's a strong and truthful kind of message that is delievered to its audience without making them feel like they're being accused or lectured.

I would definitely recommend this movie. However, I still believe that Spirited Away was far better.

Princess Mononoke really shocked me. Without spoiling things, the degree of violence was on par with a Quentin Tarantino film. Perhaps that is a quality of Anime/Japanese Cinema, as I have seen it before in Kurosawa films and Asian Cinema.

I enjoyed Princess Mononoke and recommend it. However, it didn't have the staying power that Grave of the Fireflies, Spirited Away, or Akira. Perhaps I had my expectations set to high, but I don't really remember wanting to sit down and talk about or go out and watch this Anime again.

However, I could still appreciate it for what it was. An immense and epic tale which never stops to entertain and even shocks the audience with its twists and turns.

If you haven't watched Princess Mononoke then you're missing out on something meaningful and enjoyable. Like some other of Miyazaki Hayao's movies, this one is also about the environment around us. It is meaningful because it is a good mirror image of what our world's olden days could have been like, portraying our olden attitudes and values (but more dramatized of course, with the addition of the forest spirits, making the battles all dramatic and cool).

The characters are nothing to be missed. Ashitaka's every movements are graceful and precise as he is portrayed as the Prince of the Emishi and an excellent fighter. He fulfills this role very well. All the characters are unique and their personalities are very realistic.

The storyline is of course the best part. This is a masterpiece with a plot that unfolds at exactly the right speed and a storyline that twists with many beautiful turns. The underlying meaning does not need to be noticed in order for this to be one of the greatest productions of all time, and the events just make everything lucid and simple enough for you to make your way through without any confusion at all. The music is just great, especially the song 'Mononoke Hime' with vocals.

The first time I watched Princess Mononoke, I wasn't even concentrating, but it gave me such a memorable image. When I watched it by myself the second time, I realized that I just couldn't stop. That was why I was crazy enough to watch it ten times more with my sister =)

One of the recent movies I've viewed awhile ago, this has been very impressive and fascinating for every time I have seen it. The animation on the design and landscapes were highly given as part of the Miyazaki touch for adding genuine familiarly to those setting, also granted to the musical composition of the pleasingly verses that fathoms to take account of a certain and intriguing atmosphere to it. When I realized that this was just another one of those newer types with the similar taste and concept which has less of a distinctive feature to the previous ones, it may have been more of an involvement to the adventure/drama type of its dilemma from mostly the two main characters. It puts forth many segments concerning Ashitaka’s curse that blames for the misuses of the natural land, whereas everything on that time was solely from the evolution on its historical era as well as making it a fictional setting through the Japanese era of when it was just an involvement of the early settlements. Mononoke would be known to be that firm protector, more of a leader to her surroundings, as she was one with nature and seeing land as a home, not only to herself; but to those who were the living creatures which are fictional and spiritual in essence with the whole mythical view from a higher being, known for controlling of the forces and was watching to their own unsuspecting eyes. One of the most cherishing films I have watched from most of the starting point to the valiant conclusion of it, this will be one of those movies that possibly would never be forgotten for its time.
