I had to admit, putting a hiatus on a series in my case could mean the following reasons: I have no time, lost interest or I just feel like it. The third applies to the series of Sokyu no Fafner, but the prequel that supplememented it made me want to pull it off my waiting list.

The story starts when the graduates of Tatsumiyajima start of to go to the real world, but the world they knew is a facade and they're plunged into circumstances that may break or solidify themselves.

Animation could've never been better. Impressive visuals and effects, fluid movements and CG that complements well with the hand-drawn animation. Another plus would be its blue-theme of water. Almost every aspect of water are both beautiful and realistic from the crashes of waves to the tranquil lights of the sea. Character designs are almost the same as the series itself, but the quality is up a notch, but I do have some complaints as to why some characters look the same. As if they were related somehow, I'll probably never know. This is a very aesthetic-inclined show overall.

The music theme compose mostly of orchestra and some pop at the end of the movie. The battles are made intense because of the music that goes along with it while the peaceful conversations are amplified by depressing, but elegant tunes. The voice acting can be flat, especially for the adults in the cast, but this isn't exactly an easy-going watch.

The plot had reminded me too much of EVA that it convinced me to take off some points. Festums can be synonymous to Angels while Fafners could be compared to EVA units. Execution's too fast-paced. Battles and deaths happen when you least expect it. So transition isn't all that good here jumping from certain events to the other. It could've been better, but it did serve its purpose as a prequel.

Characters didn't flesh out too much. I know that some of them have appeared in the series and will still have the opportunity for the audience to get to know them, but for those that don't, don't. Lots of questions are unanswered to the viewer leaving you clueless as to why some guy is like that or why he/she must do what they do. Development was thin and swift, you wouldn't care much.

I recommend viewing this at least once even if you haven't seen the series at all. This is even a better starting point than the first episode of its own series, IMO. Watching this after finishing the series also works just as well.

Even though, there are so many rights as there are wrongs in Right of Left, I was mildly intrigue, mostly about how good-looking it is though, lol. If it becomes licensed, this is worth a rent.

This OVA or special caught me completely off guard. Seeing that Fafner in the Azure's ending was quite open-ended, I was expecting to see some follow-up sequel of the anime, but what we get is quite the opposite...

The story of Right of Left brings viewers to the recent past of Tatsumiya Island, allowing us to empathize with a new set of young pilots who were chosen to fight for the island's peace.

Right of Left, though actually set in the time before the anime, latches on perfectly as a suitable sequel. It omits all the confusing aspects of Fafner in the Azure and incorporates the emotional tales of the character's lives instead. I felt that a lot of unexplained things about Soushi's behavior and the appearance of Karin in the first episode of the series became lucid after this OVA/Special.
Having the will and bravery to fight for and protect those you love is a major theme in this anime, and this emotional jolt is conveyed very well through the use of character dialogue. You find that a lot of the time, Soushi or Ryou (the main character) will question the true meaning of protecting those you love.
Everything just suddenly seemed to fit into place and made a lot of sense, all thanks to the wonderful storytelling and plot - a mixture of hopefulness and tragedy.

The graphics were excellent and in most cases (especially at the beginning) the scenes were convincingly 3D. I applaud XEBEC's continual use of excellent animation to create a very realistic environment that is scary but hauntingly beautiful.

More great OP/ED songs from Angela add to the great Fafner-ish-feeling of Right of Left. The bgm was usually quiet but hardly omitted because this is an emotional anime. Tears streamed down my face as I watched the last moments of Right of Left! You cannot miss the powerful emotional punch of the music!

The first thing I noticed about the characters was that Ryou and Kazuki look extremely similar but the way they perceive things is completely dissimilar. Unique personalities were a great plus in Right of Left and Ryou was very lovable as a strong-willed character fighting an unwanted illness.
Because this is a prequel, it was very cool to see old characters from the Fafner series popping up here and there, like Shouko and Karin, for example. Even in just a short OVA/Special XEBEC has created a network of intertwining characters and convincing relationships.

I thoroughly enjoyed this OVA/special. It was a perfect length of around 45-50 minutes and the ending is a great reflection of how the pilots feel suppressed by the assimilation phenomenon but are encouraged by the sensation of inevitability.
The most melodramatic and depressing aspects/parts of Right of Left were Ryou's voice-recording, his feelings towards the Fafner machines and Yumi as well as the bond between him and his pet dog.
Right of Left is testimony that riding in a Fafner brings you beyond just a battle - it is a quest of the mind! I enjoyed every second of Right of Left. It was really worth watching! I wish to see a sequel for the series as well!

A very well done OVA. It's a prequel that takes place a few months prior to the series. It sheds some light on the impending situation at Tatsumiya Island. Having said that, it can certainly be viewed as a true prequel, I think there's no need to have seen the series to understand the overall story.

Much of the story is told from the point of view of Ryou. He's one of the Fafner pilots selected to 'graduate' from the island. He is partnered with Yumi, a friend who also graduated at the same time. There's some conflict in between them, but the similarities in their experiences help push them forward.

The prequel, like the series has a strong theme of 'protecting those we care for'. It serves to justify why these kids fight. Certainly some angsty moments arise when they question or wonder about their current situation. Personally I'm thankfull that it wasn't too angsty. There was just enough not to bog down the action.

Mecha design, I think the main Fafner model used in the OVA does not appear in the series (not 100% sure though). Much bulkier, but similar to the sharp-angded mechas from the series. Not a lot of fight scenes, when they do fight the Festums, it's done fairly straightforward. No special moves or clever ways to win the fight. One exception is the opening scene, lots of great choreography - oh and nicely done cel-shaded jets.

Overall, it's very story driven, a good story at that. Personally I would like to have seen more intense fight scenes. Fans of the series, definitely have to watch this. But if anything I recommend it for the story.

First I'll say this, if your looking for a SEQUAL or atleast an after episode of the original series then this isn't it. This takes place BEFORE the anime with a diffrent main character. However that doesn't mean that it isn't worth watching.

The animation like the series looks exactly like Gundam Seed, a lot of the characters resemble those in GS but thats by no means a flaw, unlike GS each character looks like they are actual people (not an anime style widely used) The mechs are well designed and far surpasses what I was suspecting.

The music is great like the series and the new op/ed by angela are as always, wonderful. The only flaw is that the background music doesn't feel that memorable.

The storyline takes place at least 4 months before the original series (it could be much father back for all I know) it tells the story of Yumi and Ryou who go on a mission for the island, basically to buy time for the main island. The story tells Ryou's tale which is bittersweet, but this is Fafner, you know this isn't all hugs and kisses.

I have to say I liked Ryou's character a lot (wish he had been in the first series) the only problem is that he looks EXACTLY like Kazuki, besides his hair being rather spiked out you really couldn't tell a diffrence unless you hear Ryou talking, or see both Ryou and Kazuki togeather (which you do in 1 scene), Yumi presents a very interesting heroine she seems like a cross of Sakura and Maya from the series, she and Ryou make a good pair, although I feel her motives were a bit underdeveloped, (of course it's a 40min OVA, I'm not expecting much). Soushi returns... or comes back... or something in the OVA and it helps to futher develop his character (not like he needed it XD) and the OVA also helps to show the lives of other people on the island.

I enjoyed this series although it wasn't what I expected. At first I thought it was taking place some time in the future, Ryou could easily pass as Kazuki's son (although Ryou is actually older XD), although the story itself is somewhat sad it does go to show and develop the whole situation behind the Island in the series as well as the lives of those on the island and what happens when they find out about Alvis (from Kazuki's perspective you don't see anything like the OVA shows you).

It's a watch for anyone who's a fan of the series, but I have to ask...

WHEN ARE WE GOING TO BE ABLE TO SEE MAYA AND KAZUKI KISS ALREADY!? Or just show them in an actual relationship, or SOMETHING IN THE FUTURE! The ending was so open-ended that I didn't see this type of OVA coming at all. Sure it's good... but I want the story to conclude. Maybe the manga goes better then the anime (does this even HAVE a manga?) guess I'll go look. (Sorry for the half rant, ENJOY!)
