*WARNING! A SPOILER LURKS IN THIS REVIEW*

Revolutionary Girl Utena is confusing and entertaining at the same time. This is a movie that should be watched over and over again in order to understand the metaphors and strange visuals. Viewers who have seen the entire series may have a better grasp of the movie than first-timers. Although it is not as epic as the series itself and offers more fanservice, you should give this movie at least one run in your dvd player.

Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Adolescence of Utena is a retelling of the story as portrayed in the series. Some aspects of this version are better, but for the most part the the plot seemed hurried and the characters underdeveloped. I would tell you not to watch this movie until you see the series or read the manga, and then only if you liked what you saw.

Immediately after finishing the series I watched the movie. Initially I thought it'd be mainly recaps with only the ending slightly changed but fortunately it was something completely new. Not recommended if you havent watched the series or read the more mature manga, but even then it isnt certain that you'll grasp that much.

Here almost every scene is surreal and every detail was put in animation and visuals with help of computers. They used a supercomputer specially designed for such complex scenes. On the other hand what the movie gains in visuals it loses in characters. All of them are flat. Better watch the series or read the manga. Only Anthy is an OK character and better designed than the series too. Some more mature elements of her character omitted in the anime are included here. The same goes with Utena. After watching the movie I undestand that a lot of such kissing scenes were also in the manga and werent adapted to the anime series due to the target viewers. If they were the series would turn even better.

Also the final car chasing scene may be spectacular but a lot of Utena fans werent that satisfied. Since I'm no Utena fan I dont mind but perhaps they overdid it a little with symbolism.

I wouldnt watch this again soon. Except the visuals and the last action scene it is uninteresting. I'll try reading the manga for the real Utena.

As my first actual Yuri movie, hey I kinda like it. I mean I'm a really hard-core shonen-ai/yaoi fan, but this movie was cute. The kissing and the "sorta sex scenes" were fine, I didn't mind it at all, and I find it adorable. Comparing this to Utena the anime, it's awesome. I mean I think the anime sucked XD. I only liked it cuz of the humor and a few stories out of the 39 were decent to hear. But I didn't like the fact that there were no kiss scenes between the girls and only straight sex XD. Also I disliked the ending of the anime, but the movie's ending was incredible. You might have to watch the anime if you want to get some BG information of the characters like Miki and Juri.

The animation was so much shinier, and the drawings were better done. Anthy looked way better in the movie than she did in the anime. Also the arms aren't pointy and the bodies aren't terribly long.

Story was really... I can't describe how much I liked it ^^. I really like the background of the school, and like how everything was like floating somehow, it was a different world. And the ending was great, about them escaping.

Characters: There weren’t really characters you'd dislike. I mean, if you hate bad guys but they were all greatly drawn and the personalities were so hidden but somehow you know how they are, like what the act like.

Overall, as my first yuri movie is was really cool. (Utena the anime does not count, there was only handholding, I mean what is that! Where's the sex!?)

Ah, I was sooo close starting to cry my eyes out while watching the end.
This is a beautiful masterpiece that should be watched by all anime fans! However, it's very confusing at times and can be hard to understand for some people. Especialy if you have not seen the series, that would just leave you as a big question mark after watching this as you need to know the deeper stories that are only explained in the series. And you also have to be open minded, of course. This IS a shoujo-ai/yuri movie for mature audience. If you can't stand seeing naked girls, entangling their naked bodies while kissing, you should go watch something a little tamer like Sailor Moon.
I'm in love with this movie.
It's a real masterpiece.

Only attempt to watch this after seeing RGU series as it seeing it without prior knowledge of RGU will not make you understand it at all. Even the jokes in here would not be understandable without watching the anime. This is just an alternative version or a summary of the entire series with slightly different adjustments made to it.

I expected a LOT more from this anime! I heard a lost of good things about this movie but it wasn't that great.

The animation is not that bad but the characters look really weird. There's a lot of detail put into the backgrounds but it can be hard to interpret exactly what's happening at times. Some scenes look really cheap in the car chase scene, I’d give examples but I don't want to give away spoilers.

The sound is definitely the worst thing about this movie. I absolutely hate the voice acting in the dub and all the tunes. They are so so so annoying!

The story in this movie is quite deep but boring at face value. It isn't interesting enough for me to look into it too much but it seems like there's a lot going on, at many different levels. Most of the movie seems really confusing, more so then End Of Evangelion (the greatest anime movie ever!)

The characters are pretty much how they are in the series; I don't want to go into any detail here. Since this is a movie, you can't expect the characters to develop much here.

The value of this movie depends on how much you liked it. I'd say if you like it, you'll definitely want to pwn it as you'll need to re-watch it to full comprehend it. If you didn't like it, don't bother.

This movie's enjoyment is kind of low for me because i found a lot of it to be quite boring. And I’m not that interested in lesbians that look like that :P

Overall, I would recommend this anime to anyone who likes the series but be warned, this is not a conclusion to the open ended series.

The best thing to compare this movie to is the Esclaflowne movie. Just like the Esclaflowne movie, it takes place parallel to the movie, almost as if in an alternate dimension. It follows an alternate path, or road.

The first thing to notice is the animation upgrade. It’s far more impressive than its series counterpart. Of course, the main drawback of the series is its vast amount of repetitive and reused scenes. The series still had a high amount of art in the animation. Sure, there might be better looking anime movies out there…but this was about three times as artistic as the series. It was splendid to watch and take it all in.

The sound was decent - probably above average. The voices were about the same from the show, and you could hear some of the operas in the movie as well. They were a little different which, of course, was a good thing. Still, wasn’t extremely impressed overall.

The story and characters were not as good as the series. Standing alone, everything was about average here. You’d be able to identify and make a few assumptions about some of the characters had you seen the series. There’s even a hilarious segment that takes some of the humor from the series (but wouldn’t make much sense otherwise). Still, by itself the characters are NOT as screwed up. They are a little different, but I don’t think that its much of an improvement. For example, nothing was made mention of Utena’s “prince encounter, but that she had some relationship with the head of the student council. Different in this case is not the issue, but compressing really awesome character personalities from a 39 episode series into a hour and a half movie just doesn’t work in this aspect. The only improvement was Himemeya, who ACTUALLY HAD A PERSONALITY this time around. The relationship (lesbianism) between Himemeya and Utena was the main focus this time around. There’s also only two duels. All in all, I think the movie was a step back in the opposite direction, even though the beautiful art more than makes up for it.

This movie truly is a masterpiece. No matter what way I look at it, there is always something new to see; which is exactly what a masterpiece should be. I have seen this movie about 11 times I think and there were still things I was noticing that I didn't before. The animation is simply gorgeous for this movie. It is even better than the TV series, which in my opinion was pretty amazing, the colours are vibrant, the backgrounds are amazing. The character design is amazing and gives the movie the get go it needs in establishing itself. There is a certain melancholy in everyone's eyes in this movie that I have not seen anywhere else before. Just a close up of a character's face tells you a lot about them and where they fit in. The sound is just amazing in keeping with all the things the movie wants to be, Toki Ni Ai Wa is just amazing with the motif of floating roses. Zettai Umnei Mokushiroku goes so well in the sequence it is and the story just flows by. The story, seemingly random, is the most complex one I have seen. It is even more complex than the series as so many elements are touched upon in such a short time period. All in all this is truly amazing. This anime has the most value and enjoyment as well since you have to see it more than once to get the full story and it is enjoyable no matter how many times it is seen. No one should miss it.

First, just let me say that this movie is down right beautiful. Not just in art, but in story, in symbolism, in direction... this movie is beautiful. If I were asked to define art itself using only anime, I would have this high on the list.

Now, before I scare away all the typical viewers like myself, don't get the wrong impression. Although this entire movie is art in motion to me, it's still the Utena we know and love. It still has the random comedy, the wonderfully creepy story, the great action, and amazing characters, and the fun of anime, in abundance.

The story of the movie blows away the series, mainly just because it cuts out much of the filler. But although the movie is great stand alone, it's subtly amplified many fold if you've watched and enjoyed the series first. It's more of a retelling than a sequel or prequel, so it's enjoyable no matter how many times you've seen the series.

The art is far improved from the series already great animation. The budget was obviously higher, and they were willing to take a lot more risks. In other words, nudity and more suggestive themes abound. Everything from the characters, to background locations, to the fight animations are just plain gorgeous.

Like the series before it, this is a must see by any hardcore anime fan. If you've only seen the series and not the movie, you don't know what you're missing. As with the series, some unconventional and possibly uncomfortable topics are covered, so I'd recommend this only to adult fans with an open mind.

Great Animation, and a wonderful retelling of the series. I hate to spend the whole review comparing the movie to the series, but really, the series is pretty much required viewing before you watch the movie, so the comparisons are going to be made.

I loved the new character designs, overall artwork in the movie, the movie goes so fast, you really have to hold on, all the characters are quite different excpet Utena and Himemiya and while it's kinda annoying, the new characters work well, except perhaps Himemiya's brother.

The movie kinda gets a bit weird in the end, well, a bit weirder, and it may be jarring to some, but the whole series and movie is so symbolic, the ending is just taking it to the next level.

The only thing I didn't like is the far more overt sexual overtones, it wasn't needed and added nothing to the movie.

If you liked the series at all, see the movie. if you haven't seen the series, then you should think about watching it, and then watch the movie.

Now this has definite lesbian motifs! Not the series. The series lightly hints at lesbianism. This one is quite open about it, and yet no one talk about it in the movie but people won't shut up about it in the series. Okay, review time.

Animation is much better in this. Even the long hair looks better, but Saionji's hair still looks like a wax mold and he still looks like a dumbass. And the Utena car looks really weird. The music's the mostly the same as in the series, which is bad cuz they recycled. The story is just as vague as the series but is less developed (duh!). I was really confused about the whole car wash thing and why they had to race out (although it was probably the most interesting part of the story). The characters are fine for an anime movie (meaning they are underdevloped but at least you know why things are happening for the most part). If you liked the series, this is a decent alternate parallel world to it (like Rayearth OVA).

I don't know - after first having seen the complete series and then watching this movie, it all made sense... but I don't think that watching this anime alone make alot of sense.
It is quite easy to understand it all as they deal with quite obvious symbolism in this movie (unlike the series). It is simply a story about a girl who is rebelling against the system where girls should be girls and boys should be boys. Not wanting to be a cute princess - but instead she want to be a prince. She does not want to live the made up pretended so called "real world". Kind of like all teenagers, huh?
And the best thing about it: an anime with real and visual shoujo ai(lesbian romance). The only thing I dislike is the censour where nude people do not have nipples - I mean... if they don't want to show nipples there are always ways to hide it... to simply erace them is just silly.

I watched this movie after watching the Utena TV series which had left me confused. So much information was thrown at the viewer in just a couple episodes, not giving an opportunity to sort out and makes sense of it, and then before I knew it it was over. The movie, while a sort of alternate storyline, takes elements of the TV show and explains it better. By the end aspects of the TV series made more sense. It brings good closure to the Utena series.
Whoever told me you can watch this one without seeing the TV series was crazy. It won't make any sense without seeing the show all the way through to the last episode and if you're planning on seeing the TV series anyway (which I highly recommend) the movie has some spoilers for the TV.

Apart from its stunning visuals and superb music, SKU: Adolescence Mokushiroku turns out to be even more impressive than the TV series. Subversive and rich in metaphorical possibilities, this is not the kind of movie you want to watch for fanservice or mindless entertainment. On the other hand, for those who have come to appreciate the Utena TV anime/manga or simply want to watch something with content that goes beyond what we typically know of anime, give this movie a try. All in all, SKU again proves that the highly under-represented shoujo genre in anime is not what it seems: In the case of Utena, its magnificent art, unique plot, and the unusual relationships between its characters, among others, are just examples of what makes it tick.

Adolescence isn't just another anime movie you can pick up and watch without any background or knowledge about Utena. The Utena movie is like a revamped version of the series twisted a little bit and crammed into an hour and a half. Watch the series, love it, and then take on the movie. This truly is a piece only for fans. But if you can understand the concept of it, it really is an amazing film. Don't expect to understand everything right away. The wonder of Utena is that it goes beyond that.
