Though certainly not as well known or high-profiled as Otomo's previous work "Akira", "Roujin Z" definitely has some good qualities and is worth watching at least once. Especially if you've watched or plan to watch the third GITS movie, I'd recommend giving this title a look too since it deals with the matter of the care of the elderly in a much better and parodic manner.

Overall I found the first half of the movie much better and the moment the robot-bed takes the lead and runs amok I found the movie a little boring and common. The ending is very good and touching.

But one thing that makes this movie good are the characters and the characters design. Especially the female characters. Haruko is one of the best anime characters I've seen in a movie. And some of the elderly too. Also the robot-bed at some points is very funny. One of the best characterizations in anime. I havent watched the dub. Some moments are hilarious.

This movie can be enjoyed if you dont take it too seriously (it was made with comedy in mind) and if you like some witty humour and funny moments regarding the elderly and how they're treated by society.

I have enjoyed this movie and would rewatch it. I heard the English release was 6 minutes shorter than the Japanese.

I'm a little disappointed with myself that, after watching an anime with such a unique and promising premise like Roujin Z, I didn't really enjoy it. I can barely explain why, either. The three thoughts I had that stuck with me after the movie were, in order, "This is trying way too hard", "What the hell is going on?" and "...that's it?" This is the first time that I've never liked a movie and couldn't quantify the reasons in words. Maybe I was just disappointed in it, after reading a few generally positive reviews and then expecting a lot more than I got out of it. Who knows.

One of the average works of Otomo Katsuhiro. It had a lot of sci-fi action than the given storyline itself. The old man was hilarious, of how he is the cause of the trouble with a machine inclined as being one of the test subject on the Z-001 machine. Everything in that story was just so nuts afterwards, when the machine starts having a mind of its own. The animation and music were fine, as well as the story that kept progressing through time with the mech that had more moments than most of the characters. It was an alright movie, maybe for only seeing it once though.

This has to be one of the most quirky anime shows I've ever seen, and I'm glad that on a personal note- I'm not an Akira fan- otherwise this review would have gone completely downhill after being entranced by Akira. This is one of those movies that doesn't take itself seriously- and allows you to think- doesn't bombard you with too much at the same time like other fantastical animes. It looks more of like a return to morality- the moral being that it's better that humans take care of the elderly, not hi-tech robots.

Another good anime from Katsuhiro Otomo. He always mixes action with a message about society, just like Akira. I'm very proud to buy this movie on DVD. I enjoyed the action scene with great animation, as nice as Akira, in the same style but sometime, on some part, the animation become ugly because there is no detail on the characters and the buildings.

The story was good and sometime funny. It make me think about the future when I will be old, on how people should care about eldery. It's a bright one !

This is a strange movie. I found it to be kind of original to. When I saw it I actually got scared for a moment. We will all grow old some day. Today we allways see on the news, old people beeing misstreated in retirement homes. Will our society look like this in about 10-15 years? While the plot takes some scifi elements in to it the overal message of the anime is a warning. We are not imortal. Our body will soon begin to fade away and how will take care of us then? In Roujin Z these questions are beeing debated in a smart and serious way.

This movie is a intelligent and sad story. Beeing old is not a easy way of living. The missery of the older characters is sad and a real fact of life. Though many people that watch this movie may not see it the massage it is clear in my eyes. Take care of your elders the way you would like to be treated when you are old. Because if you dont we may have a future as the one in Roujin Z.
