| X is a pretty good Manga series. The movie tries to accomplish the whole series in one blow, and we all know how disastrous that can be. If you like a lot of gore and pretty good animation, then this is the anime for you. For when it was made, the animation is quite advanced. The plot gets a little bit confusing, and don't get attached to any of the characters. This, like many movies, tries to accomplish too much in too short of a time period. The result is that we do not get enough character development and the whole thing ends up being a little confusing. There are some really cool ideas in this. It is worth a watch.

| If you simply must see X, I would recommend the movie over the series. Sure, they both suck, and indeed they suck for the same reasons, but the movie won't waste as much of your time.
It is for this reason that this review is rather short; rather than waste my time writing the same things as I did for the series, I have my comments to a minimum. So, if you need to be convinced anymore that X is overrated garbage, please read my review of the series.

| I have seen many animes in my life, some brillint, some good, lots of mediocre and plenty of really crappy ones, but this one just takes the cherry of the cake for beeing the most idiotic storytelling I ever seen... why?
Well first of all the basic starting plot is mediocre at best, but the way the story is developed is ridiculous, whithout any meaning and logic at all, no reason for the course of action other than "destiny" and a battle that appears out of thin air and wants to convince us it's the battle for all earth and that only one guy (a very hateble guy in the series) can save it...
Ok, it's ok you can make a good story even out of a bad plot, but the story flows in such a meaningless way filled with splendid visual and sound surreal effects, that actually don't mean anything then visual, they actually have no meaning at all if you think of it... so we are driven from the start, which is very rushed to the end of the movie through an endless show-off of visual surreal special effects, superpowers, spectacular building explosions, blody scenes and grandious sounding but totally meaningless dialogues between the characters.
So as you would imagine, since the dialogues are meaningless all of the characters didn't have and depth at all, aldough all tried to look heroic there wasn't any reason behind it, and many of the dramatic love scenes were forced.
Overall this anime uses an epic atmosphere, of grandour nd bravure that wants to subliniate the world shaping events it represents with visually stunning animation, but as a plot, and especially story development and characters, it lacks any quallity and logic, and I would like to nominate it for the "Worst story ever made"
I hate it when a movie forces itself to look dramatic and epic without and substance behind it to hold that feeling, it's like an empty shell.
Maybe the movie was rushed and it cut off a lot of important parts of the anime, and that's why it makes no sence at all.
Dont watch this unless you're an X Tv fan or you highly value special effects over story, even if it's the worst one possibile.

| I must say that X the movie is pretty much overratted. T he movie was made in 1996 wich we can't really expect a graphical masterpeice as easily as the movies from today (wich are made with computers). However the thing that I hated the most of the movie was the ending, why? cause the Shinken breaks with a single swing!! thats just rediculous and insulting to the manga's creator. What I loved of the anime however is all of the great action going around with the end of the world, even though it lasts about 1-3 minutes tops each and lots of characters can't be appreaciated enough to really enjoy the movie. The series does a much better job at this. I recommend watching the anime and reading the manga instead.

| Compared to the excellent TV series, the 2 hour long X Movie is a disappointment, this does not mean that X is a bad movie by any stretch of the imagination. Compressing such a long and detailed manga into such a short time is never a good idea and the movie inevitably suffers as a result from an over compressed plot and under developed characters, which may confuse people not familiar with the original manga.
At heart X is an action movie, concentrating on the final battle and the conflict between Kamui and Fuuma. This inevitably means that the other characters are underdeveloped and generally ignored, but it does allow the movie to outline the key concepts and meanings within the manga. The rest is compressed to the degree where several scenes and key plot points are barely explained, if at all. The characters fare better. Even though they are pale imitations of the ones appearing in the TV series and manga, the viewer is introduced to them and sees a glimpse of their basic personality and allowed to identify with them. This compression applies to the action sequences too, most of which are far too short. Nevertheless the movie retains the epic atmosphere of the manga and TV series and the bare bones of the plot, which are enough to compensate for these weaknesses. Provided the viewer is willing to accept the lack of detail, X is a good movie, providing an apocalyptic action epic with deep philosophical undertones and a hefty dose of action, comparable to the likes of Akira. Much like Akira, however it bares only a passing resemblance to its source material and suffers as a consequence

| I watched both the movie and the series. To be honest I hated the series, it sucked. Sure more information, but the ending was so happy and crappy. Most of the relationships were totally different than the movie.
So I like the movie much better, mainly because of the ending, it had a feeling towards it, while in the series I was like "WTF!?", why is it all happy, it’s an Apocalyptical anime, there all supposed to die!
I also got more attached to the characters in the movie than in the series. The series kept on going on and on and on, made them all very hard to concentrate on, while in the movie, it was short and to the point (Which I love).
I really like the animation in the movie and the BG music was much more noticeable, so I found it nicer. The only reason I wanted to watch X the TV series was to find out more info, but it really didn't help, maybe a bit more background on the characters.
Overall, the movie was a lot better, and I enjoyed it. The only reason I gave the story a level 7 was because little info, but come on, they did a good job on fitting the whole TV series in 100 hours and still making it pretty good.

| This one's though to review..
first let me tell you that prior to seeing this movie i saw the TV show ( which is amazing BTW) so i did get a lot of details and had some background info on some characters that many people that haven't seen the tv show won't get.
but evaluating this as a stand alone and not as a complement or "extra" to the newer tv show this isn't such a great movie.
the story is an alternate retelling of the x story, albiet a very BASIC retelling, it only keeps some key concepts and then screws everything around, you don't get to know almost anything about the main characters which IMHO is one of the strongest points in the X universe because the characters are very complex, and something i found VERY stupid is that every main character dies like a fly, they just decided to kill them all !! though not one death will matter to you since you barely see each character...i can understand the lack of story and character development, since the plot in X is very detailed and has many naunces and subplots, ad you can only tell so much in 90 min...but there could've been better ways to tell a the basic plot.
Also, what happens in most of the movie, except for the basic elements is pretty much very differen from the manga and TV show, so it won't "spoil" you what happens if you happen to see the movie prior to the show or manga.
One thing i did love about the movie was the animation and style....like everything in the X family, it's very elegant and epic, and the action scenes were great eye candy even though there was no heart in them.
the music was HORRIBLE....almost no music...this IMHO could've saved the movie and give it more excitement but it was very very bad.
In the end, this movies fault is that it's very BASIC - bare bones plot, charactet development and music, and the only saving grace is the eye candy and ambience of the movie.
It's nice to compare it to the grandiose TV show which is top notch in every aspect, and if you choose to see one, by all means check the TV show, it's a masterpiece.
If you're a fan of X, you'll probably pass an ok time watching it, like me, but only because you kinda know what's going on....if you didn't you'd be pretty bored.

| Yuck. It’s certainly believable that this anime sat collecting dust on my shelf for over a year. With an average score of about 5 for 90+ reviews on this site, you KNOW that it’s going to be horrible. I knew this, and watched the TV version first.
As it stands, the TV version remains one of my favorite animes…in the top 10 series anyway, due to it’s doing just about everything right. In X TV, just about every character was fully fleshed out…each given a personality and a backstory as well as change and development so you can actually care about what happens to them. The story is complex and full of themes and, despite a simple and excellent plotline, it had multiple side stories running along with it as well as enough surprises. The animation was tremendous, and the dub was actually well done! I can honestly say I saw X-TV dubbed and proud of it. The soundtrack of the series was also simply amazing, some of my favorite anime soundtracks. Lastly the ending of X TV was superb in my opinion, both in execution and emotional effect.
Why am I going into so much detail about the series? Well, to be honest, X: The movie is like the series deadbeat father – it didn’t do anything right. In fact, of everything I listed above, it did just about the complete opposite.
The animation for 1996 was alright, I suppose. It certainly had enough style and pizzazz (although the fight scenes could have been a lot better, actually). The sound as far as voices was ok (I saw the Jap version this time), but the music was awful.
The story was convoluted and hard to understand (from the standpoint of not seeing the series first), but it was different in followthrough and ending than the series. Not good. Characters had little screentime and were more like cannon fodder as one after the other died anticlimactically; every battle ended really horribly. Even the final, supposedly most climactic one was over in 10 seconds once Kamui decided to fight back…sad. Then, it just ends. Bah, what a horrible waste of time!
Despite that, I felt as though I had to watch it, seeing as the series is one of my favorites. That, and, although its been sitting on my shelf for about a year, the DVD isn’t mine. Although I wonder how thrilled my friend will be to get this trash back…

| I guess people didn't really like this anime very much, but guess what, I did. It makes me say "Time to watch X (TV)." But seriously, beautiful dream imagery and a good concept (as far as those go).
Yes, they tried to pack a lot of story into this short film, it lacks in character development. But, it keeps you interested gives you some beautiful things to look at it. It also has some rather intense parts.
To hear it in full, check out the rest of my review.

| I was so endeared to Subaru... I loved him so so much in Tokyo Babylon, the manga, so when I saw the X movie, I forked out £20 to buy it...
And I was disappointed.
There were no explanations. It just was a battle scene, and that's it. THe movie is just one long extension of the series, with only a basic look at what drives the characters, and some major characters bypassed completely.
I suppose CLAMP thought it would be easier simply just to kill off Subaru and Seishirou as fast as possible, as they might make the complex story even harder to understand. However, how they do it leaves little sense in it's wake. A battle between the two for "personal reasons" is all you understand of it. There is no explanation to why certain things happen the way they do and they have obviously glossed over the shounen-ai simply to try to apply to a different audience...
Or perhaps they got rid of Subaru simply because he and Kamui look so alike? *shrugs*
I respected CLAMP up until this movie...
That said, I would say that, despite the animation being somewhat lacking a special something, they definitely made it very artistic.
Trying to analyse the dream sequences and finding the significance of all the different events can be mildly entertaining, especially if you're bored as you listen to the bad voice acting...
Well... That's it from me. I'm going to watch something decent... Like Naruto... Yeah... something decent...

| The animation, sound, characters are all technically good. However, this movie was meant for Japanese fans of X. Those fans had read the manga and watched the movie which serves as a finale. Because the movie came out this way, American fans without any knowledge of X watched the movie, which doesn't explain anything, but shows the final battle. So without plot and character explanation, the American fans could not really enjoy it.
I watched it in this way. So story is almost non-existing in the movie. And hence, points dropped for the enjoyment level. However, the collecting value is high. The manga, TV and OVAs are now coming out and the depth of this modern supernatural apocalyptic story is revealing its true face.

| The animation and music for X was beautiful, the only problem was the story line and character development. They tried to compact to much in 90 minutes. After watching the movie, I was very skeptical on the TV series. Fortunately the TV series was one of the best anime series I had seen and made up for the underdeveloped movie.
This last statement is for HappiJai, yes you stupid shit, the theme is very easy to understand but the that doesn't mean the story line doesn't fucking suck. At the begining of the movie when Subaru is fighting Seishiro. They never mention Subaru again after that fight. The anime series hadn't come out yet when I watched the movie, so naturally I was going wtf who the hell was that. And as for the other characters they don't explain shit for any of them. They just give name and kinda show what their power is and thats it. And the only story they give is between Fuma and Kamui. So don't act like you some smart mother fucker. If you liked this anime fine, keep it to yourself. I thought the movie fucking blew and you can suck my dick.

| X is a very interesting and worthwile anime movie. It is obviously more rushed then the T.V. series but, overall a great movie. This movie came out before the T.V. series so I saw it first. If you would like to know more read my review.

| This one really bites... the TV series remake is much better than this sorry excuse for an OVA.
The animation is of about average quality for a movie; the sound is not up to mark - even the explosions and collapses fail to sound convincing. The endtitle song is nice, though.
The story actually has great potential, but here it was not developed properly - plot progress is confusing, as many points are not well explained. Characters are not explored in sufficient depth, and almost just flit in and out of the story... too short lived. Truly, a 90+ min movie is not enough to properly develop such an epic plot... this is corrected in the TV series, which takes this story and its characters to its full potential.
Not very much worth watching, since the TV remake is a better option. Probably only of value to collectors.

| Overall.. if you don't have it you aren't missing anything. If you do then enjoy it for what it is.
Believe it or not, behind all the fighting there is a message in this anime. One that is very real and which I find very entertaining in real life. How two people can see the same thing and perceive it two totally different ways.

| This movie qualify for the TURKEY of the decade. I watched this before I got into the TV series or the manga. After 98 minutes, I found myself repeating "WTF?! WTF?!".
Okay. The animation was good. Too bad the storyline and character development were rushed to the point someone who's not familiar with the series will go away disgusted and utterly confused.
Blood, gore and lavish application of the Shinken on friends and foes alike courtesy of the psychotic Fuuma Manou seemed to be the sole attraction of this otherwise dreadful movie. If you love flying limbs, decapitated heads, spineless boy hero (Kamui has NO spine, no sword handling skill, no direction whatsoever in X movie) and psychotic sinister bad boy -- then you might like this movie.
The ending is utterly lame.
I'd recommend this movie if you have nothing better to do and don't mind wasting electricity for 98 minutes. Otherwise, buy a condom, grab your partner and spend that 98 minutes shagging. You'll be a happier person at the end of the 98 minutes. Trust me.

| Rather than think of it as a stand-alone movie, I believe CLAMP intended the anime version of "X" as a bonus for fans already familiar with the manga, its characters, and the storyline. Due to the success and even higher potential success this movie showed, a TV series was created to those unfamiliar with the manga. As a movie itself, X impresses its audience with lush visual animation and sound, but little room for character development or story explanation. If you're already familiar with X (in either manga or TV seris form), it's worth it at least to see this movie, even if it's radically condensed.

| I've never seen the series so this is purely judged based on this movie alone.
This movie had GREAT potential until about 75% of the way where any and all real motive or plot has been destroyed or ruined. The character development was never complete for most characters and especially the main bad guy. At first his judgement seemed fine and understandable; however, it quickly disolved as he revealed no reasons for his actions as well as development that leads to his actions.
The animation and sound were indeed grand, but other than that, the story/plot, character development, and overall enjoyment was very dissapointing. It has great potential to be an amazing movie at first, but it just kills itself in so many ways...

if you need a story to go with your violence then stay away from this and go watch the tv series
