| This is a real treat for people who are into vintage anime! Wings of Honneamise [WoH] is very much like a Miyazawa anime [Nausicaa, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Castle] except instead of dealing with fantasy WoH is sci-fi.

| This sure as hell isn't for everyone. In fact, I was pretty sure it was the most boring thing I had ever seen until I heard the dub. Still, it is a slow paced, lengthy film which relies on character interspection to achieve its impact, something which doesn't appeal to many. If you can deal with the length and give it a chance however, you will be rewarded with a solid anime all round.

| (a4e rip with Jap/Eng language, watched it only in Japanese)
I didnt know that this was the most expensive anime movie of the 80's. But all the money they put in was worth, since they made a movie that should perhaps be considered a classic, along with Studio Ghibili movies of the 80's.
Every ingredient that makes a serious movie succesfull is available. Realistic characters (good voice acting, expressions and animation), detailed settings that mix the 60's with futuristic ones, an alternative earth with artificial countries and a completely different geographical map and some intense action in the end (perhaps the most agonizing count-down ever). Also some politics, diplomacy and warfare are thrown in and only in the end does this really become effective.
A two hour length is perfect to develop the story and the characters, though the chase scene in the end wasnt that necessary. The characters are mostly funny and very few movies have such good and refreshing characters. The main character is an average idealistic guy to whom a life opportunity is presented, namely to be the first astronaut. He overcomes many hesitations and obstacles, especially in the end, preferring to die rather than abandon his cause. His noble ideals really made me watch the very good and touching ending, that only the later staff of Evangelion could create. The direction is perfect since the enthusiasm of the staff's first major work played an influence
In my opinion this is better than Evangelion and should be more widely known to the anime community. A necessary watch for every animation fan, considering this is an old title. 1987 had truly some amazing animes (Robot Carnival was another one)

| Ok i have to say i'm really dissapointed by this movie since i had such high hopes.
Animation:
For the year it was made in the detail and fluidity of the animation is really really good... but still i can't give it a high grade since the ideas and art behind the background design of this alternate world they live in are very uggly... everything looks so missplaced and uggly, i mean come on, men in ballerina skirts?... i don't know, maybe it's just me, but the style of the alternate world just didn't appeal to me at all, aldough it's clear they did put a huge ammount of effort in it.
Sound:
This is the worst part of the anime... voice acting might be bad, but the background music is horrible beyond description, i just couldn't bare with it, and for some strange reason the BG music's volume was to high and i could hardly understand the voice acting.. it was a real nightmare... that's why this is the first anime that i'm gonna give the lowest score possibile in the sound departament.... note that i've seen the english dubbed version.
Story:
Ok the basic plot of the story was promissing, the first steps of humankind into space, politic intrigues, moral issues, religion and the complexity of the world they live in... But for some reason it gets really really boring, so boring that i just kept watching the Media Player bar to se how much i had to go on watching this cose it felt like 4 hours even dough it's about half of that... Ok so even dough it's boring we still get some pretty great lines from the guys that surround the main hero and provide most of the fun... the other thing that salvaged this story was the ending with it's beautifull message about humankind, civilization. peace and war.
Characters:
Well i don't even remember their names, and i watched it yesterday, maybe it's because they weren't interesting, but most likley because the english voices keps screwing up the names... Well it has a collorful cast, mostly because of the main hero's work friends. I also enjoyed the main hero who changed a lot in it's ambitions, mentality and way of seeing things durring the movie... however i didn't understand that damn kid with that sad face, man i hate him....
Value and Enjoyement:
boring Boring Boring.. has some nice ideas behind it, and you can se the Gainax influence in it since in the end the story is about humankind and it's relations with humans and God... but still watch it ONLY ONLY if you aren't the kinda guy who gets bored fast.

| Old-school at its finest. So much fine detail and great music to set a moment off. If you can make it past the slow movement of the story and pay attention to those fine details I think this can be appreciated on a higher level. This should be on a top list to be seen although its not action packed or mind stimulating.

| The movie Oritsu Uchuugun was a stunning movie. Anyone who enjoys not only sci-fi anime, but for those who want something more in their variety of great anime experience. The animation was good and had some great scenes. The music was excellent, that coincided well with the soothing animation when they progressed though the story. The lead character himself was sincere and had a good sense in understanding his motives. The flaws were a few, but weren’t really noticeable. The story may start slow from the beginning of the movie, which gives more references to the characters. Quite a few exciting moments that made it lively, but probably wouldn’t be exciting for most action fans.
Shirotsugh was pretty much an easy going and average kind of guy. He was one of those characters who wasn't really as bright or had any incentive from his life that seems to go nowhere, even on his career as a space soldier. His inspiration was given by a girl who gave him that motivated will to become an astronaut. Many moments happened during the whole ordeal when everything starts to progress on their mission. He was given a chance to do something more than anything than he could ever imagine, but usually was involved with a lot of conflict of interest; due to the politicians, citizens and the other countries who are having thoughts on taking over the whole plan. There was an actual involvement from a religion aspect of when the girl was explaining on her philosophical views, which was then influenced on his understanding and having the certain good qualities within her of being a well-match person from the role that they both played, as well as being more spiritual on his faith as well. Most of all, having those innocence on her own self-control from not giving in without her own terms. The other characters, who were involved and are helping to create the whole ongoing project, had also great motive to take notice from when they're greatly considered to be with Shirotsugh. As from their presenting viewpoints from their own role and given their certain personal development. Some insightful theories are quite memorable to the whole plot on how these characters are being favored on constructing the ship, not only for the sakes of the main character; but for the things that are taken into a certain pride for something that can be satisfying for their own importance. As the ending gives it turn, which was highly cherishing and had its slow-moving radiance, it was just something always catches the eye whenever I just happen that one scene on how it made me think of how one person changed a lot of things during its journey of being someone he would never thought he would be. I would watch this again many years from now and it will still be a wonder for my take on this vast and prolonged storyline. If I were to give an advice for an anime movie with something more than a plot, I wouldn’t be hesitant to choose this one.

| The animation and the message was not bad. However, the pace of the movie was so slow. At least Ghost in the Shell had psycho babble for the intellectually-inclined. This anime successfully showed the many ills of the world through the protaganist's apathy. But that cost a lot of points in the entertaining department. It's got a message but it's slow. Again, I have a friend who considers this great. I beg to differ.

| This is a classic in every sense. It is a creation that shows the love placed in it, not needing to resort to constant action and one whose characters evoke empathy.
The art is sensational, with new takes on the world we know to create another world. This world is not too dissimilar to the one we know, but its unique creations, be they food or language, shine through.
The original Japanese voices match the storyline perfectly, with Shiro's slow tones reflecting the slow pace of the film. It is this single factor that will probably make you either love the film or hate it... Personally, the film's pace was perfect, and such an epic storyline needs good pacing. The music comes from a composer used to epic soundtracks: Ryuichi Sakamoto (Oscar winner for The Last Emperor).
If you can get hold of this, then please watch it. It stands the test of time well, and you may just fall in love with it.

| Wings of Honneamise is a deep, insightful and slow paced classic from Gainax. The film tells the story of a space race in an imaginary world similar to our own and of Shiro Lhadatt, the man who is chosen to be the first person in space. It subtly integrates it's pacifistic and religious themes into the storyline, putting them forward without being too obvious and without preaching. The highlight of the plot, however, is seeing Shiro's character grow and develop. The transformation in his character is especially remarkable given the believable and realistic manner in which it is conducted. Whilst the other charcters do not match Shiro in either how well rounded they are or in character progression, they are all realistic and do not lack in either department.
Despite it's age the film is remarkably well animated. Whilst old fashionned in style, it still holds it's own and is as good as any modern anime.
The sound is very good too, adding to the beauty of the film.
Wings of Honneamise is not for everyone. In particular, the more impatient will find it's slow pacing boring and should avoid it. However, for those who like slow and thoughtful movies Wings of Honneamise is a gem and a must see.

| "The first true anime art-movie."
Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise is a captivating tale of a nation's race to space in an imaginative world that somewhat resembles the real world of 50/60's, but adds a lot of interesting dimensions to our history.
At the time of it's release back in 1987, Wings of Honneamise was the most expensive production in the history of anime-movies and it shows even today. Although the animation itself is slightly outdated by now, the amount of movement by the characters, objects in the background and everywhere else is outstanding. There's also heavy use of "special effects" like shadows and light in motion; and it all looks very good even now, more than 15 years later. The usage of sound-effects and music is no less impressive - they support the mood and enforce the emotions in nearly all the scenes perfectly. Only some of the voice-acting leaves me hoping for more, but the vast majority of the original Japanese cast are very good.
The movie is not a mere display of technical skills, however. It has a strong storyline, centering on the main character, who is the pilot of the world's first space-program. The movie starts rather light-hearted, but evolves into a deep and involving drama with difficult character-relations and mature dialogue. There's a fair amount of humour added, but it is always used very subtly, so that it never rises to compete with the serious themes, but rather lightens the otherwise heavy story whenever necessary. There are some action scenes as well, but they serve the same purpose - they take the audience away from the drama and give them something simple to enjoy for a moment.
The main character is a rather dreamy, almost philosophical lonely man who observes the situations and people well, but doesn't quite know how to affect the world around him in a way he would like. The world itself is extremely well-crafted, all the way to the unique costumes, vehicles, languages and measure-units. The technical equipment bear a resemblance to real equivalents from nearly half-a-century ago, but are distinctive enough to appear as genuine items of this imaginary culture. Overall it creates a magnificent illusion of a living, breathing world. Very few anime-movies have reached the same level of vividness.
The movie has some pacifistic and religious themes, but there's no preaching to the audience - rather we're allowed to observe and draw our own conclusions and opinions all through the movie. No simple answers are given, which adds to the already high level of realism this movie has.
Finally, I must say it is rather funny to see those famous names of the old Gainax (Hideaki Anno, Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, etc.) during the opening credits, as this is what many of them started with; young aspiring visionaires creating a piece of art without prejudices - and it almost resulted in a financial disaster. Luckily they continued on, creating more excellent anime, but had they been forced to stop their careers after this one, Wings of Honneamise would still remain a hallmark of creativity in the history of anime.
I'm sad movies like this are made no more.

| A classic movie and Gainax's first production I believe. Wings is an audio and visual marvel with the highest budget of any japanese animated film up to the point this was made. With that said, the movie didnt deliver in the entertainment division like i had hoped. Slow and boring to be honest with you =\

| i guess all titles that is created by gainax is really worth watching huh! eve though WOH is old, i still highly recommend it! yeah it doesnt have much action, but you can still enjoy this because of the characters! although there is a moment about nudity and attempted rape by the hero(is there any title from gainax that doesnt have nudity?), it is still worth watching!

| A classic from the 80's. A very original anime that dosen't follow the conventions of most modern anime (slapstick, fanservice, and all the other elements we know and love). That having been said Wings of Honneamise is not for every one. The pacing of the story is a bit slow but for me it just meant more time to enjoy the animation which was obviously painstakingly done to near perfection. Wings has a very realistic feel to it the characters are well written, Riqunni was especially refreshing. It was good seeing something different for a change, Wings ranks high among anime movies I've seen.

| Older anime, for me, has a nostalgic effect. Even though I would only be one when this came out, the style of art is what I remember from anime when I was four and five. Those detailled stills, like paintings. Those slow moving scenes of nothing major going on. Now days anime is often very simple with colors and objects drawn as simple as possible for a minimalist look. I really miss the days of detail.

| brilliant animation art and sound some of the scenes were drawn so well I actually thought I was looking at a photograph, better than a lot of the anime drawn more recently.
Unfortunatly the story lets it down, large parts of the film are just plain and uneventfull. I may have found it more interesting if it had not been dubbed (I don't like dubbed anime)

| A lot of impatient people, and hard to amuse. I sat down and watched this, and I was amazed with the animation quality, and sound. The story was very deep, and thoughtful. Im glad I had the patience to watch it, although, it was boring some times, but still worth seeing.

| An interesting Anime, with some interesting characters, though, this movie really did not live up to my expectations. It would have been a lot better if it was half as long becuse there was a lot of pointless, idle moments. Some of them were ok due to the character's evolution, but the reasons WHY he felt the way he did were shallow and unbelievable.
The addition to military sabotage was interesting, but this movie is only worth the watch if you are desperate.
Could have been a LOT better.

| I think Rikimaru is definitely wrong atleast in his assessment of the main character, Shirotsku Ladat. There is genuine development in him throughout the course of the plot, during which he sheds his apathy for a pure and courageous faith. This character development is as finely crafted as I have ever seen in a movie and is the center piece for a rich story set in an imaginatively created and believable land. This is a must watch film for anybody.
