| I think maybe if I'd seen this first I might not have bothered with the TV series, as quite honestly it was awful!
Having watched all 279 episodes of One Piece (as of this date), I can honestly say this bears no resemblence to what came after. It's a straight in your face 28 minute OVA that offers no insight into who the characters are, what they're doing out at sea in a small boat and why there's only 3 of them is anyones guess!
Having been made the year before, I can only surmise that the creators of this wanted to make a short OVA to celebrate the anniversary of the company who release the One Piece manga - Shounen Jump - but as a stand alone OVA without knowledge of the manga or the TV series, it really isn't worth your time watching.
If you want to watch One Piece try out the TV series and only watch this if you just have to know how bad it is!
Whatever you do, don't let this OVA cloud your vision of what the TV series is all about, as this pales into insignificance in comparison!!

| Maybe I just don't get One Piece. The actual series is really high on the top 200 chart, with people saying they've seen 300+ episodes and want more.
I've seen this horrid OAV and read the first 4 or 5 volumes of the manga and want no more. I'm just waiting to see the appearance of the cigarette guy in the manga, to see if he adds some life into this uninspired pirate story, but I'm doubting my ability to hold on.
Enough about the manga - this OAV was BAD, in only the way children's television can be. "Let's assume children a stupid, and make something like them!" seemed to be a running theme in this OAV. Well, I guess there were a few good messages and themes for children to follow, but I could've told you what was going to happen before the damn thing even started, and I'm easily surprised. Aside from being intelligence insulting, the whole thing was uninspired, with the typical heroes VS. villains plot you've seen in EVERY other good vs. bad TV show in existance, just done more lazily. I guess if you're a fan of One Piece, you'll be really excited over this, but this was just not for me.

| Es tut fast weh es zu sagen aber diese OVA ist mit Abstand das schlechteste was bisher in Sachen One Piece produziert wurde. Von Seiten des Inhalts und dem Unterhaltungswert her ist diese OVA-Episode irgendwo zwischen dem 1. Yu Yu Hakusho Movie und One Piece-Movie 1 anzusiedeln und besitzt obendrein nicht mehr als die Qualität einer der vielen langweiligen und unkreativen Fillerarcs der TV-Serie. Die Story kann man in 2 knappen Sätzen zusammenfassen: Böser Pirat macht Terror auf einer Insel. Ruffy und Co. kommen hinzu, verhauen ihn und alles ist wieder gut. Eben typischstes Shonen-Movie-Schema, ähnlich wie all die anderen Filme und Specials zu One Piece aber überdeutlich einfallsloser. Auch was die Charaktere angeht wirkt diese OVA stark unpolliert denn diese besitzen irgendwie nicht den Charme den man von ihnen gewohnt ist (und das liegt nicht nur an den anderen Synchronstimmen, die qualitativ übrigens weit entfernt von denen der heutigen Seiyuus sind). Der Bösewicht ist auch nur ein Opfer und völlig Klischee und das kleine Mädel mit der Rüstung ist dumm und nervig. Insgesamt ist diese OVA das erste was ich in punkto One Piece nicht wirklich weiter empfehlen kann. Wenn man wert darauf legt sich den tollen Eindruck der Serie nicht kaputt zu machen sollte man sich lieber von diesem Werk distanzieren.
