| The first episode that I watched in this series is when Ataru and the rest of the gang are having a vacation in the beach. And I asked my self "what the heck is this anime"? It was full of nonsense to be honest, it was so weird that my brain couldn't comprehend the things that are happening. And so I throw this into the garbage, then after sometime, while surfing the net for some info on Ranma 1/2's author, I found out that this was the first creation of the famous Rumiko Takahashi, and its quite shocking, so then I decided to watch this. And I find it to be quite lovable. There I knew that one MUST watch the series from the beginning so that you will understand everything, it was my fatal flaw to start watching at episode 6 (bad idea). Enough about Grandma's bedtime stories. Lets get on with the discussion of Urusei Yatsura.
The story is about Lum, an alien from palnet Uru, this beautiful lady falls in love with the pathetic loser Ataru Moroboshi, and she lives with him and his family together with her brat cousin Jariten. In order to watch Ataru's every move, she also enrolled in Tomobiki high so that he can't cheat with her. But no matter how hard she tries, Ataru will always look for a chance to flirt with other girls, though the girls don't like him and that's where the main story revolves.
But here's the biggest question, what in the world did Lum see in Ataru? Why does she loves him so much when there are lots of men out there much better than that fool? I really couldn't think of a good reason as to why she loves him, could you? maybe Lum's taste in men is screwed? That's the question I want to ask Rumiko Takahashi if I have a chance to talk to her.

| Urusei Yatsura is a classic among classics in anime, it can be easily traced as the origin to a ton of genres and series, as well as the framework for many future Takahashi works.
It's funny that it's actually a relatively new experience for me, and it's not the first of Takahashi i've seen, since i became aware of her because of Ranma and Inuyasha which i've enjoyed years prior to seeing this show.
But after watching Urusei Yatsura, it has not only overpowered every other Takahashi series out there in my list, it also has scalted into my Top 3 series of all time, and has established it's characters close to my heart as if they're long time friends and i've known them for many years.
It's funny I fell in love with this series since its actually older than me, but then again i do like older women :).
This series fascinates me in a lot ways, for example, the animation.
Yes, it's dated, but it's still excellent and I find it very interesting that as you watch more and moreof the series, the style slowly changed and gets better and better and it's staggering to me to compare the first few episodes to the middle ones (i've "only" watched about 100 of the 195), the changes are radical and fun to watch.
The music is typical 80s japanese music but it fits the series perfectly and there's quite a few catchy tunes, especially the OP and ED songs.
The story is pretty simple; An alien race named the "Oni" decides to invade the planet and decides it will cease the invation if an earthling can defeat an Oni in a game of tag (which is japanese is related to the oni, a mythical kinda of ogre), and their computer chooses Aturu Moroboshi (which means to get hit by a star) the single most unlucky AND lecherous man in the universe.
He at first refuses but after seeing Lum, a beutiful tiger-bikini clad alien, he accepts with the illusion of groping her.
I the end Aturu cheats to win, but wins in the end, and Earth is saved, but due to a misunderstanig, Lum thinks Ataru want to marry her and decides to stick with Ataru and become his wife!! Bad luck for Ataru since she's jealous and can(and will) give him electric shocks everytime he goes chasing after other women.
Well, that's the setup and most episodesare standalone from each other, mostly based on japanese floklore, and the daily hijinks of the cast, but still, you'd think there's no story but as the show progresses tons of recurring characters are introduced, and there are some benchmark episodes that deal with a bit more serious character development.
Still most episodes will have you smiling through and have well tought out jokes and are superbly written.
The characters are what really drive this show forward, and they are the super personable, charming, crazy and fun!
The cast is very diverse, you'll find everything from crazy monks, to hot nurses, schoolgirls, aliens, giant cats, gossipy housewives, you name it! EVERYONE has their own quirks and personality very well presented and developed, so their almost like real people, only crazier!
Also as the show progresses the characters mature and change, tough it's not noticable sometimes, since it's quite long term, almost like real people when you don't notice the gradual change and suddenly realize they've changed, though everyone still retains their quirks and charm.
One thing that puzzles me about Urusei Yatsura it's it's timelessnes.
I can't exactly pinpoint why, but this show's jokes, humour and the characters' personalities don' t feel outdated, and sometimes the dialogues amaze me since they could be in a 2006 anime or normal tv show, and still feel edgy and funny.
I guess it's because the characters themselves have modern attitudes and the lots of jokes are about universal and timeless situations and things, also it helps that the people who write the scripts are geniuises, so the show doesn't loose it's sparkle and spunk.
One thing some people may not like, it's that many of the jokes are very japanese in nature and sometimes you'll need to read the liner notes before hand to get a clearer idea of a pun or joke, this doesn't bother me one bit since it think it's great to learn more about other cultures but some people may find it bothersome.
In the end all i can say this is really a classic, timeless show, that handles a variety of humor (slapstick, basic, intelligent, wordplay, sexual) and also a variety of genres since it has also romance, drama, adventure as parts of the whole, as well as the comedy, and it's a forefather of many many anime show of the present, but in difference with many of them, this one doesn't loose it's edge with time, since it's THE original!!

| One of the first of its kind. Look at the genres that it covers. This series has everything in it. It is the Japanese equivalent of the Saturday morning cartoon I would get up at 6 AM and snuggle uinder a blanket and watch. Old school at its best, its about an Alien girl who because of a misunderstanding betrothes herself to a lecherous high school student who ultimately has a good heart, but will never admit it. Every trademark Takahashi symbol is in this series (including the hand gesture). Comedy at the core, but plenty of doses of drama and adventure, coupled with a fantastic soundtrack (over 50 CDs if you include drama albums). Urusei Yatsura is anime history. The best of every world, right here. IMO, even Takahashi's venerable Ranma 1/2 cant topple the paradigm setting value of UY.

| It’s been fifty years since Tezuma first gave the world Astro Boy. Anime has grown since then, but there is one genre that has changed little since its first appearance: the harem genre. I have no doubt that Urusei Yatsura paved the way for its countless contemporaries. Maison Ikkoku (though it’s also by the same artist), Kimagure Orange Road and Touch almost immediately followed Urusei Yatsura. I repeat: I have no doubt that these shows wouldn’t exist had it not been for Rumiko Takahashi’s first work. However, I also have no doubt that this anime……
…..sucks the big one. Filled with unfunny jokes and puns, Urusei Yatsura is a self-assured work, an anime that thinks it’s funnier than it actually is. Despite this though, this anime is considered a “classic.” But folks, let me reveal a little secret. This is not a so-called classic because it’s good. It’s a classic because it was the first of its kind, the first of (allow me to repeat) the most mindless and hackneyed genre anime has to offer. Is that something to be commended? I think not. It’s a classic because it created the “original loser.” Ataru is his name is this case. He’s loud, obnoxious, annoying, and the classic pervert. I have no doubt that Keitaro is a carbon copy. Is that something to be commended? I think not. Last but certainly not least, there’s Lum. Lum was, if you will, the first anime babe. The poster-girl, the Marilyn Monroe of anime. But does this mean she was a good character? I think not. Lady Oscar, who appeared two years before anyone knew the word Lum, blows the ditz out of the water. Unfortunately, Oscar was an intelligent cross-dressing woman. That’s certainly not attractive. Lum, however, is a moron clad in a tiger-print bikini. Ah, male otaku can now shamelessly drool at their leisure. There you have it, folks. I have revealed the….ah….”merits” of this anime.
I have often complained that the term “classic” gets thrown around too often. When I think of classic, I think of an anime that has influenced the medium for the better (ahem, please read the last three words of that sentence.). Does this anime does this? Hell naw. When I think of classic, I think of anime that is actually, well, good (as opposed to popular). Is UY good? Nope. When I think of classic, I think of something that has not only stood the test of time, but will not be surpassed for a very long time. I am quite confident that there will never be another quite like Gundam, Yamato, or Sailor Moon. Considering this, then, it amuses me that Kimagure Orange Road (six years UY’s junior and more deserving of classic status) is heads and tails better than this classically abysmal schlock.

| Classic humor anime.
Silly anime piece that focuses a lot on perverted humor jokes. However, despite that, I found this anime to be quite enjoyable from time to time.
No serious nature around this at all. But that is its strong point (or it could be what you think is its weak point)
As for the quality of humor it does get repetitive at times and feels like nothing is going on. It is quite random at times too.
Animation is old but it doesn't bother me at all.. Sound too is old-fashioned but it serves a good purpose.
I wouldn't watch this episode after episodes, but I would recommend this over ranma for humor alone.

| A fun story with an excessive amount of humorous characters, it consists as being a hilariously themed anime; as well as being an odd one at the most. Almost every single part of story never seems to have serious side, which doesn‘t have the purpose of doing it in the first place. The animation is rather outdated, but it still matches well with the humor and style. Music and the voices were quite good, especially on Aturu who was a comical main character. I'd also loved how these characters are always constantly bantering with him throughout the story. However, it tends to gets more tedious and repetitive from the idea that Lum can be too attentive to Ataru. The story could be a little better with a some serious relationship with Ataru and Lum as it progresses, although it does have a few good moments. A terrific recommendation as a stand-alone comedy genre. It will always be considered as a classic and a decently old one, even from my own usual trend of selected titles.

| This is one of Rumiko Takahashi's first romantic comedy even before Ranma One Half. As one may notice 5 remarkably good old time seiyuus from this series made their way into Ranma:
Ichiro Nagai (Cherry/Happosai), Kenichi Ogata (Ataru Morboshi's father/ Ranma Saotome's father Genma), Shigeru Chiba (Megane/Sasuke Sarugakure), Issei Futamata (Chibi/ Hikaru Gosunkugi) and Saeko Shimazu (Shinobu Miyake/Kodachi Kuno). Ataru Moroboshi is my favorite charecter for his daredevil and I mean despicable nature in general which of course attracts many monsters derived form Japanese mythology including his irrevocable lover, the oni Lum. I love lum and I would really like to be shocked by her electricity ('ucchi'). Lum's fire-breathing oni baby cousin, Ten, is a baby with a big mouth and a adult intelligence. However he is like Ataru Moroboshi's brother. Shinobu Miyake("Otoko ni nante" - I hate men.) is the physically strong character. Shutaro Mendo, wow the handsome Richie Rich guy whose attitude somewhat rivals with Ataru Moroboshi. Chery really makes my heart explode with laughter because of his creepiness and ninja like appearances out of nowhere ("Sadame ja" - it's karma). However, he is a good Buddhist monk with a profound knowledge of his field. His old fashioned beautiful niece, Sakura is the hearthrob of every boy in Tomobiki high school, (especially Ataru Moroboshi and Lum's fan club founded by Megane, Perm Chibi and Kakugari) but she rejects them for their perverted minds. She does not understand the youthfullness of other women and eats a lot with a beautiful body without any sign of explosion or fat. Megane the crazy, but highly philosophical loudmouthed friend of Ataru Moroboshi (that's why in the Masquerade party episode megane disguised himself as MS Gundam 0079's Char Aznable) and his always beaten up friend Chibi. What made this Urusei Yatsura really unique is East meets West and some of the episodes portray this aspect (Ultraman, Megane disguised as MS Gundam's Char Aznable, miscellaneous characters disguised as a Zaku, Aliens)

| Gah, this anime is totally crazy! I so love it! The story is just so funny, it's impossible NOT to like. The characters are positively hilarious and while the music is not the best there is, the voices are quite right as well.
It might even be a sucession of "chiches", from the story to the characters but considering how old this is I believe this anime was quite original... when it was made.
I think this anime it's worth watching if even just for the complete craziness. ^^

| The very first long series work of Takahashi Rumiko. Even, I am a fan of Rumiko work from Urusei Yatsura to Inuyasha. I am unable to give this anime perfect 10, comparing to my grading on Inuyasha or Maison Ikkoku. The reason is based on the early episodes of this series. The early episode did not have a good animation comparing to the later episodes. I admit that Manga is the same. As, the drawing on the first 10 books was not as good as the rest of the series. Especially, by the very end the drawing can compete with Ranma1/2, Maison Ikkoku or Inuyasha. The storyline is very original. The sound of this anime is perfect. The characters are unique and interesting. This is among the most hillarious anime of her day.
Animation 8 for her time as there are more products from 80 that surpass Urusei Yatsura. Music 6 but Seiyuu 10, which square it off at 8
Story is based on all fillers series and Japanese + European fairy tales. It is very enjoyable but I have to decrease it to 7 for the lame joke on some episodes. Also some points have to be cut due to their discontinuation of the story. Characters are unique in both personality and behavior, also they can change their behavior on different situation, which is very realistic. Therefore 10 would be fine for characters. Replay value down to 7 as some episodes are all non sense and lame (most of them are non sense but still funny). So, I have to put 7 (even I really want to give 10 as I love so many episodes). This is going to enjoyment as well as I said before in story and value. So, it is down to 8 respectively.

| Let me say this right now: I only give all 10's to the BEST of each genre. I have only given all 10's once before, and that was to Pita ten (for the best of the kawaii-magic genre). This is it people! The series that started the lust vs. love genre, where a single individual is lusted after by every individual they see. The difference between this and lets say Tenchi Muyo or Love Hina is that the main guy is:
1. After EVERY girl he sees and/or touches(you'll see)
2. Has one girl who is already attached to him for absolutly no apparent reason(for a current version of this, check Rizelmine)
3. Has the positive traits of a piece of s***(there aint any)
So why would anyone watch this? Because it started it all. The guy getting knocked into outer space, the parents intervening only to further agitate the main character, and lets not forget that the house is literally destroyed in about every freakin episode (^-^)
Watch a few episodes of this and you will recognize about a million cliches that originated from this series and have transacted into modern day love-comedy-death to guys animes.
Just TRY IT!!!

| Ah... the good ol days anime... =)
This anime is one of the first few anime I watch all those years ago... lol... (Old as Hell!!!)
This score would be base on back when I was a little kid first saw this when it was out. lol... =)
Now that I re-watch it, (parts of it) it doesn't look all that anymore... well maybe it's old, but old series like Macross still looks good all these yrs so I don't know... But either way, I just give a bad score to a old favorite from the past. For it was funny as hell. =)

| Urusei Yatsura is an anime classic--but be warned, the first 30 episodes or so had God-awful animation quality and were split into two stories per episode. After ep 30 or so, the animation got much better, the stories were lengthened to the normal 24 minutes an episode, and the series really picked up and got more interesting. The manga-ka who wrote the UY manga, Rumiko Takahashi, also wrote Inu Yasha, Ranma, and Maison Ikkoku, and it shows, with many similar characters and personalities. UY is mainly a comedy, and some episodes are hysterical while others aren't as much. Still, it's worth checking out, and I'll always have a special place for it since it got me into anime back in the day.

| One of the standard bearers of anime. The influence of it can be seen everywhere, especially in the romance/comedy genre. Anyone familiar with Rumiko Takahashi's work will instantly recognize their favorite characters from Ranma, Maison Ikkoku, etc. in UY. If you loved the characters from those anime, you'll love UY's cast. Lum is one of my favorite anime characters ever. Just like Ranma 1/2, this is a show with its up and downs. There are a lot of hilarious episodes, and then you've got episodes that borrow the same ole' themes from previous episodes. Even worse, episodes can simply be dull. And just like with Ranma 1/2, the earlier seasons are its best. The quality of the writing and animation take a drop as the series goes on. My recommendation here is to dig up a episode synopsis somewhere and find out what the best episodes are and just watch those. Good episodes are really easy to get into, even if you're unfamiliar with the show. Hard for me to compare the animation to contemporaries, because I didn't see much anime from the early 80s :P It is pretty crappy by today's standards but was probably good then. I didn't find any of the music particularly good (you won't find any of the opening themes or endings on my PC) but the voice actors have their characters down. I don't recommend anyone buy the entire show, but there is a lot of good stuff in there. Well deserving of its label as a comedy classic.

| Ehhh, well, UY is certainly part of the history of anime, and I enjoyed it while I watched it, but there's better out there.
The intro and ending songs are kinda catchy though. And Ataru IS the most lecherous man in the universe and there are some hilarious bits in here. The animation is simple and dated, but good. A rainy day anime I suppose.
On the other hand, if you're willing to take the plunge, let me point you to Urusei Yatsura Movie 2: Beautiful Dreamer, an absolutely brilliant movie. Course you'd have to watch some of UY first for background.

| Not as good as I had hoped. The animation is quite outdated, but that isn't one of its faults. The plot is basically nonexistant, and the fact that they cram 2 eps in each 25-minute spot doesn't help. Lum's character isn't anywhere near the legendary caliber that she supposedly commands.
The fact is there are so many others similar to it - but better - that you just might want to pass this up in favour of Rumiko Takahashi's later works... say, Ranma 1/2, or Inu Yasha.

| If there was one show that represented anime, this would be it. The predecessor to almost every comedy show, Urusei Yatsura is a staple watch for any anime fan. Crazy will never be done better and rarely will you ever see characters so well developed as these. Though the show starts to degrade after Director Mamoru Oshii leaves, it is well worth the watch. And after watching UY, you won't have to watch Takahashi's overly contrived shows in her later years, this one is definitely her best work.
