| Disgaea anime DOOD
Upon finishing this series, I conclude that this "above average" show succeeds because it does what it was intended to do: present a quasi-accurate, enjoyable representation of the Disgaea game.
The Disgaea important story elements and quirky humor is excellently portrayed. In addition, they even chose the ending that I thought was most fit for the series. Animation is pretty decent, and best of all, the English voice acting was not bad at all. I was surprised (and very pleased) that the majority of the voice actors for the game were the same in the anime (no wonder they sounded similar...)
What is great about disgaea in general is that it doesn't take itself very seriously. It constantly pokes fun at over serious elements; I got such a kick out of Captain Gordon (his English voice actor is HILARIOUS). The thing is: there are many places where Disgaea could've gone wrong but it didn't. It could've done a bad representation of the story (nope). It could've had bad animation/inaccurate representation of the characters (nope/ yay for Etna). Also, it could've been overly lame and unfunny (also nope).
All these praises given, there are however the (expected) bad aspects. First off, I cannot really imagine people who have no idea what the game is to watch this series. They might enjoy it nonetheless, but enjoyment increases quite a bit if you at least know what Disgaea is to begin with (nostalgia). In addition, the biggest shortcoming of Disgaea can be summed up in that it wasn't made to be perfect. The storyline is rather linear, the character development not superb; Basically, Disgaea was just not meant to be more than an 'above average' anime. It's not particularly jaw-dropping or anything really special and there are, like most more-average anime, filler episodes that aren't important (I think about 2-3). In addition, quite frankly the fight scenes are mediocre (one of the true hurtings of the series). With this said, however, it's just that Disgaea does a GREAT job in delivering enjoyment to people who understand the inside jokes and know the show. It's funny, nostalgic, and devilishly quirky (no pun intended).
Disgaea is out of control; sometimes it feels like an anime for children. But then, it suddenly feels like it's for adults because of the foul language, sexual innuendos, and intelligent-humor. I applaud the 12 ep decision, as opposed to dragging it out into a 24 ep mistake. Like I said, this anime avoids a lot of pit traps it could've fallen into.
Although one might say "well.. how hard can it be to make a good game adaptation; you basically just copy the storyline". Well.... Look at Sonic X, the HORRENDOUS representation of sonic the hedgehog (video game). Game to Anime conversions aren't always the best, and Disgaea did not disappoint. It short, it did it's job rather well.

| Makai Senki Disgaea is a 12 episode series based off a popular strategy RPG game of the same title. While the storyline order of events have changed quite significantly, all the actual significant events and plot points remain consistent. The main appeal of this Disgaea show is the same reason why the game was so popular - the odd and quirky characters, whose personalities have been transferred and preserved from the game to here. Disgaea the anime's storyline is essentially Disgaea the game's storyline. Both share the same quirky humor, the odd and funny dialogues, the out-of-this-world situations, the unique characters, and the same 'chapter progressions'.
However, how will strangers to this game receive Disgaea? Well, I think the high degree of quirkiness takes a little time to get used to - and some may never like it at all. At first, everything feels a little over the top. Absolutely nothing makes sense in this Demon world and the characters are just a bit too silly. There is no long-term consequence to any character's actions, and each episode is almost independent to any other. Furthermore, the fact that nothing substantial ever happens (because that is just not the point of Disgaea) might turn some off. Well, it all depends on whether you find any of the main characters (Laharl, Etna, or Flonne) entertaining.
Personally, I didn't enjoy this animated series too much. Most likely because I already knew everything that was going to happen. Furthermore, Disgaea isn't a really complicated game/anime, and since I am already used to the characters, I didn't feel too impressed by this anime's 'bringing-to-life' of the characters. . I didn't play Disgaea for its storyline. It was a good intermission in-between the battles (which was the focus of the game) and I got a few chuckles here and there, but nothing too memorable. To those familiar with the game, there ARE quite a few new things here and there, so if you really liked Disgaea, this anime is not a pure copy of the game.
In the end, this series is a good adapation of the anime - it is extremely consistent in the humor as well as the character personalities and interactions. However, because the storyline really wasn't the focus of the game, and since I already knew what the characters were going to do (given the simplistic character development that would occur at the end), I personally felt kind of bored by it. It is kind of interesting which 'game ending' they chose to show - they didn't pick the best ending. Also, they didn't give away most of the more important storyline game spoilers, which is kind of annoying. Oh well. If you liked Disgaea, this is decent.
Edit: To those people who said that this anime has nothing to do with the game, they definitely did not watch it to the end. More characters? Yah right - like one person popped up in one episode. Totally different storyline? Yah right.

| Never played the game so I wasnt really affected by that watching the anime. I have to say I really enjoyed it. Its very light hearted and witty. Some great characters and it has a poke at some common sci-fi/fantasy elements.
Definately worth watching. And surprisingly enough for an anime series the ending didnt feel like a let down. Overall an enjoyable 6 hours spent watching the series and would recommend it.

| This anime only shares the same characters as the game which was released some 5 years now I guess. While the game was quite a good rip-off of Final Fantasy Tactics, the anime has nothing to do with the game, and has more characters in it.

| Temporary Review based off First Episode
I was a huge fan of the disgaea game so i was looking foward to the anime...
But the anime has NOTHING to do with the game at all except having the same characters..so far at least.
I've read somewhere that it was loosely based on the game and will go its own path, which is fine.
Why? Its still wonderfully executed. Cute and wicked funny. Do check it out.
