There's two ways you can see this anime. Most people love it, some people think its overhyped. I'm one of the people who think this anime is pretty amazing, although, I will say at one point I didn't think of it that way.

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu is quite a masterpiece to me. To explain, I have seen it in its original order (which was not chronological and scrambled in order) and it in chronological order. Whether I overanalyzed the anime too much, that's up for debate, but for each order I saw a different theme. And the theme was awesome. But don't let me tell you that, watch it and devolop your own opinions. It is worth watching although, you might need to rewatch it a second time to get the full value of the series.

The characters are good, but their personalities make this series quite attractive. The plot and value comes with the understanding of the story which is quite subtle, but amazing when the finally get it.

There's a lot you can take away from this anime and the major details that make it great are very subtle. (Just a head-up for those who want to check the anime out.) There is a tendency to miss out on these details or just not see them at all without a rewatch. Some believe the plot for the series is weak, and I truly believed that the first time around too. Three months later, being forced to watch it a second time and then voluntarily a third time, the plot became very respectable.

All in all this is a very fun series that everyone should see. The voice actress (seiyuu) for the main female protagionst Aya Hirano rocks too and is a growing star in the industry.

This anime does bring something new to the table of anime. Most people might who watched the anime in non-chronological order might not like how time was distorted there, but it was done because it fit perfectly into the theme and plot. On top of that it provided another way to project a plot. As a film, it is complex but great. Watch it, enjoy it. Can't give a guarantee on enjoyment, but I truly believe in a few years, many people will see Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu as a "revolutionary" anime.

One last note, the American release from what I know has it in chronological order. While I'm not entirely sure whether you can get it in its original order, if you can get it in that order, I would recommend that one over the chronological order. After all the director of the anime must of made it that way for a reason, right? You might get more out of it that way.

Absolutely nothing I can criticize. Haruhi's character is wonderful -- it definitely stands out in the wasteland of blandness that is current anime. Even Kyon is relatively likeable, which is a major surprise, given the state of male protagonists.

There's a reason why everyone loves this anime. Give it a shot; you won't regret it.

This anime was famous, so I gave it a try. Being a comedy, I was expecting much more. Maybe that was because I watched Seto no Hanayome right before this, but I definately didn't find any of the "jokes" remotely funny. I gave an occasional chuckle every now and then. I wasn't particularly annoyed about the random unorthodox episode numbering, though some people do have strong complaints against it. I see it as an attempt to be different, and kudos to them for producing an anime with episode numbering equally as wierd as the characters.

Is it really necessary for me to describe to you why Haruhi Suzumiya is such a great series? You've probably alrady heard the hype about it. I mean, you'll either love it or it's really not your thing or your just pretending not to like it for one reason or another. I recommend everyone should at least try watching it and I almost guarantee you'll love it (even if you'll pretend you don't). As for my description, I'm just going to skip over the obvious and talk about my reflections on the series. I'll probably spoil some things for you so don't read beyond this is you haven't already seen the series.

Haruhi herself is definitely one of the best characters in anime. She is both the hero, whose actions drive the story, and the villain, who antagonizes the rest of the cast. A similar character would be Darth Vader. This is interesting to me because I've had a great deal of trouble finding a female villain on the level of Darth Vader or Captain Hook in terms of enjoyability. Haruhi embodies both the troubled teen and dark messiah character archetypes making her both flamboyant, unpredictable, and destructive. Interestingly, I think the only reason she is so likable is because her actual self-destructive nature is so perfectly concealed in her everyday character and only expressed through her subconscious actions. In short, Haruhi is a great villain because she makes us laugh.

On the other side, most of her cations are only reprehensible, not necessarily evil. She is eccentric, bossy, and abusive and this makes her an exiting and interesting character. Also, she is sympathetic as it is revealed in the end that all of her actions, even her attempt to destroy the universe, are motivated by her desire to please Kyon.

It is interesting to note that his feigned lack of interest in Haruhi could be blamed for nearly all of the strange occurrences in the series. Though it may very well be presumptuous to say so, this could be seen as an anallogy to the relationship between god and man. Haruhi loves Kyon and does everything imaginable to try to make his life better and is constantly and desperately hoping for a response. Kyon on the other hand has convinced himself of the insignificance of his existence and the ordinary nature of the universe, and despite all evidence to the contrary, he is determined to continue believing that. It is only once he wakes up and realizes that Haruhi is in love with him and that he loves her back that peace is restored to the universe.

Anyway, I could go on and on with my analysis of this series, like how Yuki and the data beings might represent the choirs of angels or the subtleties of Haruhi's behavior throughout the series. And that's what I love about it. It is ludicrously entertaining and at the same time gives one food for thought. It is a magnificent story. I only wish it was 26 eps long instead of 14 and that there were more and larger plot arcs. However, the light novels only told one major plot arc and so I guess this series had to be limited to that. Besides, I'm always complaining that series are too short so don't listen to me. Just go watch it for god's sake already.

So I'm a bit scared to actually write a review for this anime, but I guess I'll just do it.

So, the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya / Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu is about some girl named Haruhi Suzumiya that is a God...except she doesn't actually know it and you find out later in the story.
Now, the one big irk I have with this entire anime is the fact that the episodes ARE NOT IN ORDER. When I first watched episode 1, I was wondering if I actually bought the right anime. I kept looking at the box, I inspected it to make sure I had it correct and everything. I was even going to call the company and tell them they gave me the wrong anime - but nonetheless, I trudged forward and continued until I found out that the story is in a mixed time line...it isn't in order. The anime is supposed to be like that.
Well, ok, I guess that's fine, but why would you make it so it becomes horribly confusing? Like on episode 4 (?) if I remember correctly, they introduce a new character whom I have no idea who he is or what he does, only to find out that he is Itsuki Kozumi...which I found out 3 episodes later. The whole mixed time line thing would be fine IF they just made it so you actually knew the characters first then did the time line. I can see they were going for the "Let the viewers guess until they figure it out" angle, but this is just ridiculous.
This anime is quite hyped about and I really don't know why. The animation and the sound are great, I'll give it that, but the story and the development of the characters was almost nil.
The opening episode to the series was quite dumb and the ending was horribly anti-climactic.

Overall, I enjoyed the series. I watched it on a day off and I didn't feel very bad that I kind of disliked the anime - overall, I actually liked it, it's just that I just wish there were more episodes and that they change the outline and the time line so that it is in order and maybe have a few changes here and there but not as to how they did it.

This anime has a lot of potential and I'm quite sad that there isn't any OVAs or anything. Hopefully they do make a second season or something and expand the story because the 14 episodes don't do justice.

They say that spoiling your kid is a form of abuse. If that's the case, all the characters in this show are guilty of severe child-abuse.
What is Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu all about? Basically it's about a girl, who when she gets upset, or bored, or angry, the whole world is about to fall apart. I know what you're thinking, just your average teenager, right? Not the case here. So what do the characters around this girl do when she's starting to get upset? They do backflips to keep her happy. God forbid they actually tell her to grow up. No, She has powers.Or something... Of course, all this is happening without her awareness, to make this even more fun. So This is basically the story. Add very little romance flavor, And you got Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu. I wasn't thrilled.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is the tale of a young woman going to a Japanese high school. She is interested in ESPers, Time travelers and aliens. Together with a classmate, she establishes a club known as the SOS brigade. Together they set off on a series of adventures.

I think much of the hype of this anime came from how much of a "hot babe" Asahina Mikuru was. Fangirls also seem to like Kyon and Itsuki as well. Cosplay groups doing the Haruhi Suzumiya dance (that appears in the closing credits) seem to have sprouted up like weeds at anime conventions.

Okay so after having read all the reviews here, I'm still puzzled at why this anime is so highly rated. I've watched in only in chronological order so let's start off with the story; the first 4 episodes had potential but then decidedly takes a turn for the worst. I mean the episodes from 5-13 were basically fillers. Seriously. I mean they have no relation to the show at all; no new plot no new characters no new nothing except mabye a bit of character in depth.

Now what puzzles me is the totally complicated starting and the totally simple ending. Let's see theres the talk of time travellers, espers, aliens and thier organisations. But NOT once in the anime were they specified about and explained about. There is literally no "antagonist" (except mabye Ryoko) and nothing seriously bad happens. This anime is just a happy go lucky show.

Animation and sound were the best parts of it but seriously, if the story is not good, then animation doesn't really matter.

Enjoyment and value to me is lowest because nothing, and i mean nothing, is worth watching or liking in this show.

All that said, I still don't know why this show is so highly rated but to me this has got to be in my worst 10 animes.

I started watching this anime as a lot of people said it's brilliant, pointing out in particular the appeal of episodes being shown out of order. However, since I recently finished watching "Baccano", "Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu"'s out of order episode appeal is child's play compared to "Baccano". In actuality, some of the episodes don't give enough clues to help me place the time of the episode within the anime, hence at times, I found myself floundering, wondering whether the episode took place in the past or in some future time.

The idea that the world's reality is based on Haruhi's wishes and how the group of characters strives to keep her from unconsciously altering/eliminating the current world is original and entertaining. But, we don't see much of the characters doing anything particular to prevent Haruhi's ability from awakening. We do see that at times, but not a lot. Mostly the characters do nothing, that is, they follow Haruhi's order, whether the order is unreasonable or sensible (with the former topping the list). The story has great potential if it exploits the reality changing consequence of Haruhi, but instead, it focuses more on her forceful character and comedy moments.

In terms of characters, although they certainly play the essential part of keeping the anime entertaining and pull viewers through all 13 episodes, I don't find them particularly striking: bar Haruhi. Haruhi is probably one of the most impressive characters ever created in anime history. I also enjoy Kyon's monologue.

But: there's little character development except in Kyon, yet, even Kyon's development is somewhat lacking. Why does he like Haruhi? even though the entire story moves through his monologue, the turning point in which Kyon realises he likes Haruhi is still foggy. In addition, his realisation is early in the story (even though it is the last episode). There's little build up to justify his attraction, not to mention, realisation! that he likes her.

Why is "Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu" so intensely popular?

No idea.

The story has potential, but it's underdeveloped. The characters are lacking in development. The story has nothing special to convey - bar the only point of god vs freewill, which is never explored.

Entertaining, but certainly not anything superb.

In my own opinion, I rate this a very very good anime show. It was put together very well and provided an overwhelming amount of entertainment for such a little 13/14 episode show. This show has a little bit of something for everyone: comedy, drama, action, great music and very good animation.
My caveat for those not knowing what they are getting into and/or wondering what the buzz is all about...I'll say this much, if you are looking for a show that will follow a traditional narrative format or have an overall plot and conclusion...then this is not for you. If you have not read the manga or perhaps are unable to think in the abstract or “outside of the box”, then this may also not be for you.

It is no surprise that this didn't live up to the hype, as the hype made this seem like the second coming of Jesus, not just another school life anime. Yet, even with my expectations lowered, this still has some problems with it, making me wonder just what people see in it.

"Not only was I just one little person in that sea of people in that stadium, but that sea of people was merely a drop in the ocean."

To tell you the truth I have no idea where the hype for Suzumya Haruhi no Yuutsu came from. If not a good show, I was expecting to see something completely different. But I didn't. While Haruhi is original in a way, it's not groundbreaking. It has interesting new ideas, but in the end it doesn't show or teach you anything new, other anime have never tried before. Original, yet realistic and deep characters is probably the only strong point, which secludes Haruhi from other, barely funny, comedy shows.

Well it's worth seeing either way, check if you are one of the hype people or not, Haruhi is not groundbreaking, but entertaining nonetheless.

A spendid anime that got a spot on my personal top 10 list, the minute i finished it. A must see for anyone who likes anime. It's got a little bit of every genre at certain points in the series. Not to mention it isn't a long one (14 episodes) so it has some nice room for re-watch ability. An instant gem, if i do say so myself. I have nothing but good things to say about this one.

It only took a few episodes for this to usurp the title of my favorite anime. The fact that the episodes are shown out of order is something that a lot of people might not like, but I think that it increases the enjoyability of the title, the episodes that take place before the ending slowly reveal to you the circumstances leading up to it, and those that take place afterwards hint at it cryptically. The lively animation, fun and interesting characters, and intriguing storyline make this a must-watch.

Another great anime from Kyoto Animation. More or less, you'll find this as either a hate-it-or-love-it anime; there's no in between for this. Not a lot of people will appreciate the thought of purposely airing the episodes out of order, which I thought was great. Anyway, for the full review please read on!

While hearing a lot of good things from this anime, it to me appears to rather be quite average. The idea to making the animes in non-chronological order with two plots therefore makes this anime a little unique and more interesting but never the less other than being a general fantasy that has minor unqiue qualities to put over average, The Melacholy of Haruhi Suzumiya is a water-downed plot with fanfare.

Despite the hype from the net and among my friends, I really have yet to see the "greatness" of this anime. Most obvious that this is a comedy, but most jokes are not really that funny, and their parodies are weak and a bit pointless. You say it's a sci-fi anime with the references to aliens and espers with their "creation" theories, but that are poorly constructed and with plot holes if you're to even look at them semi-seriously.

As always, Kyoto Animation is the best in terms of their artwork, detailed character expressions and a somewhat fitting characters to background contrasts (interesting characters to a somewhat "normal" background) is what make the theme of the whole series sticks.

Seiyuu casting is also excellent, Aya Hirano made Haruhi and herself famous with this anime, and Tomokazu Sugita's voice fits the sceptic role of Kyon perfectly.

The story is then a love it or hate it type. KyoAni decided to chop up the stories and put them in "random" order, this might seems to work at first, but if you're to look at it closely, this is only to cover up the surprisingly weak storyline. If you're to watch it in the "real" order, you would find that the main plot is quite weak and that a lot of things haven't been explained well at all. All the surreal scientific things that happened between the time-travel (casuality?), esper (closed space), and the alien (manipulating "reality") might be fine if they are standalone, but surprisingly they never actually crossed each other in the story, as they actually would confused the story even further. Have you even wondered why Koizumi never questioned the disappearance of a certain classmate, or how Nagata never even care about the properties of the closed space?

And continuing so, and you will be surprised how weak the characters are. Basically only Kyon and Haruhi carries about 90% of the story, with the rest of the supporting cast falling flat on the ground. Nagata was never developed at all, especially given such an interesting circumstance and character. Koizumi is developed as a flat and unintersting character that is only used to help move the plot along. And the presence of Mikuru is just for the fan service.

I tried hard to be entertained by this anime. It did, to a certain extent. But just as I was to be mildly amused by their jokes, it gets all serious with their theories on what's going on with their world, and when I finally was trying to be serious with their explanations, they don't go into much detail and become stupid and light-hearted all over again.

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu is certainly not a bad anime, but there is too much hype more that anything. And I'll bet the novel series would actually explain everything that I have questioned in the anime.
