| I watched this after I finished with the series. So I was surprised with the darker and more violent tone.
This has not much to do with its sequels. Fortunately the creators of the series decided to make the Marionettes more adult. Had they been like kids as in R this would ruin the series.
But for a short OVA it doesnt get very boring and some of the battles are very nicely animated. They reminded me of Astro Boy in some point.
The ending is very predictable. The characters, despite being children, are OK since they're voiced by the same voice actresses as in the series.
Animation is dark, in constrast with the cute design of the dolls. If you like animes that mix childish innocence with sadism (Alien 9, Narutaru, Dokuro-chan), give this a try.

| Saber Marionette R does contain few nude scenes unsuitable for children. The first installment of the series has a very weak story line, with the best thing is only in the character design. For something this old, the animation is something similar with H-anime's of the 90s.

| I didn't like how this was planned out, it almost has the same setting as Saber Marionette J. The storyline should've had some connection with the OVA. The only good thing about it was it's animation, but they didn't need to change the all of main character’s look. And the relevance of watching it doesn't seem to have any interesting plots that tags along the way with it. I wouldn't watch this again; moreover recommended it. Watch the Saber Marionette J series, if you want to see a better viewing.

| Saber Marionette R, was a decent OVA in my opinion. I have never seen any of the other Saber shows so my review is based exclusively on this short OVA. The battle scenes in this show were well done. If you want to know more read my review.

| Well, first of all, this OVA was the first in the "Marionette's collection". It's story is slightly different from the plot of Saber Marionette J, or JtoX. So, although you have Lime, Cherry and Bloodberry, this has nothing to do with the series.
I thought the plot was fairly interesting... for an action anime, that is. You have action, escapes, life-threatening situations and REALLY mean baddies. Very standard, pretty normal. So one cannot award points to the story for being original, not only because of what I referred before, but also because there are some elements from the Marionette series as well, like the fact that the marionettes follow Otaru, and the villain also has three marionettes (this shouldn't really count, because this OVA came first, but...).
So you have a very common plot. To go with that, you also have lots of loose ends and some things are not properly explained (making it a bit confusing), like how did Otaru meet the marionettes.
Also, the characters didn't have a background (once more, how did Otaru meet the marionettes?). The evil marionettes are so idiot. Lime is quite cute, though. :)
The sound was also nothing spectacular. It was ok, but not..good.
The animation could have been better, but at least it wasn't too bright (I can never say it too many times, bright animation sucks).
Overall, this OVA is nothing to be awed about. It's a pretty average action anime, and I don't think it pretends to be anything else. From here all the other series only could go up. It's not that bad, for a 1995 anime though.

| I will be reviewing this in two ways – in the overall review as an anime of its own merit, which I based the scores off of, and in the in-depth review in comparison to Saber Marionette J. Although my overall rating places this OVA in the D range, make no mistake, I like the premise of Saber Marionette and enjoyed it.
But let’s face it: the animation looks pretty bad. At least the version I saw, which was either VHS-rips or TV-rips (from 1995…so it’s very dated). When/If the series is released on DVD here, I’m sure it looks a lot better, and if I ever catch it I’ll be sure to update my animation score if necessary. However despite the graininess and being somewhat dark and blurry, how they’ve drawn the series isn’t too bad. The fight scenes are well concocted, and the backgrounds and environments are well drawn and detailed. I don’t really like how the character’s eyes make up ¾ of their faces though.
There is no OP and Lime’s voice borders on cute/annoying. The one ED that the OVA had used sucked. The rest of the sound was acceptable, but I’ve heard much better.
For the story… by the way, where the heck IN the story was the description on the main page explained? It wasn’t. Although I already know about the world due to Saber Marionette J, if this was my first saber series I would be lost. They never say that there are no women, (and there actually might be in this time period, since one of the characters mentioned marriage). This would have improved my score in this category… back-story of a world is important. There were also a few plot holes (such as, if Face was locked up for a long time, how did his army get created and come to attack the city? Especially with such advanced weaponry.) Otherwise, the story revolving the takeover of the nation and rescue mission was okay (for a series of this length).
Other than that, the story was about the characters, which were somewhat interesting. Some of them could have been developed a little more, like Face. He had a little back-story, but because of the lack of explanation of the world, the clone thing seemed a little hokey. By the way, these are some pretty terrible names… Face? Sexadolls? Jeez. Lime was a simple but sweet character, as well as Cherry. Junior was a wuss for nearly the entire series, but, I give him credit for keeping with his ideal to never harm another person. The protagonists were all likeable.
I enjoyed this short OVA. The overall feel of the series was good and the length was appropriate to watch all in one sitting – as if you were watching a movie. Because of the movie-like length and the enjoyable fight scenes, I could probably stand to watch it again (hence the value score). But I’d only SERIOUSLY recommend it to fans of the Saber Marionette saga... since they are sure to like it more.

| This anime is way DARKER than SM J. At least, what I've seen of SM J. Don't expect the same thing from this. Of course, its still good and the characters are the same... well, sort of. We learn how/why Lime, Cherry, and Bloodberry were made.
Oh, and don't be fooled... this was made and happens BEFORE SM J. Some people who have reviewed this were a little confused about that, I think.

| Well I don't know why they completly made a new Marionette series, what made it worst was that the Marionette's are completly boring and seem to be a combination of the six Marionette's from the J season. Personally it's not worth wacthing, watch the other Marionette season instead of this OVA. One word describes it: Pointless.

| Cool little OVA... very very different from SMJ and its other 'sequels'.
