| I started off this anime by reading it. I watch the real life movies, and then went to the anime. I liked this anime but it drags on way to long. I just wanted to know the ending finally. I even stopped watching it. I figured I would wait till the anime was finished to watch the rest of it. I very real life chick anime, but it was one of those anime that started off really well and hit the ground running, but then it gets a little soggy around the center.

| Based off of all 47 episodes:
Heavy, realistic, and never-ending.
NANA has three great strengths:
1) Ai Yazawa must have really done her research, because the feelings that go behind each character and relationship is so realistic and gripping. The emotions in this anime far surpass any other anime in its class, and remains safely away from the realm tear-jerking soap operas.
2) It has a beautiful combination of music and visuals. Character designs are lovely, and a lot of effort was put into creating the soundtrack. Certainly, there were times I got tired of NANA's same song over and over again, but the production quality is very high.
3) The pacing -- as the anime follows the manga almost panel by panel (and improves upon it with beautiful visuals, superb voice acting, and lovely music), there is absolutely no wasted space in this anime. Each moment is meticulously utilized to its full potential, and there were hardly moments where my attention drifted off. As each moment felt very real and immediate, my eyes were definitely glued to the screen during the entire episode.
The bad (or perhaps not so bad):
1) Not necessarily BAD per se, but this anime really feels so emotionally heavy without break that it is sometimes difficult to trudge on to the next episode without taking a few days break in-between. Because this anime is 'realistic' and oriented towards more sexually involved relationships, there are a lot of betrayals, cheating, confusions, jealous feelings, possessiveness, destructive habits, etc... While this is certainly why NANA is so appealing and fresh, it is also why NANA feels burdensome and not really the great anime to enjoy. Nevertheless, the fact that I'm still reading the manga as it comes out is testament to the fact that there is something worth following despite the seemingly serious overtones.
The ugly:
1) This anime feels never ending... and furthermore it is incomplete at episode 47(which corresponds to manga volume 11 or so). After episode upon episode, I felt like they went through all the possible permutations of possible character relationships. Turns out, that's not entirely true... because in the manga they explore more relationship permutations within the same characters. Ugh. Just LET someone be HAPPY!
Overall, from episode 1-9, I had doubts watching NANA because it felt so pessimistic. However, I marathoned episode 9-25 (or so) because I really wanted to see punk rock NANA be happy. Turns out that a swift resolution was impossible, as layers upon layers of relationships keep popping up (past, present and future). Nevertheless, I continued all the way to the end because I was very curious how things would unfold. In the end, I felt like NANA's great production quality in addition to the perfect pacing made this anime worth watching. There really is a lot here to discover, and I believe NANA is proof that anime can be a perfect medium to tell a story.

| Words cannot describe the levels of admiration I have for NANA. This is one very well crafted show which appeals very squarely to one's sense of drama and sentimentality. If you were to base anything from the art you might think the show is very feminine like “Peach Girl” and while I did like Peach Girl.....I don't think I could entertain the idea of sitting down and watching 40+ episodes of “Momo-chan” and all her antics. Luckily NANA is not that type of a show. But I still don't think a lot of guys will want to watch this show because it deals with a lot of emotions and introspection about different types of relationships.

| At the moment I thought Japanese animation couldn’t impress me anymore, I discover the producer of Paradise Kiss who is also the producer behind NANA. I was not sure what I would encounter with this anime and I must admit that it took me 4 months before watching the first episode. In fact, I have seen Paradise Kiss before watching NANA and the main reason I did watch NANA at all was because I have felled in love with Paradise Kiss… but NANA is by far superior in term of quality.
What you will witness in this huge anime, 47 episodes, is one of the main themes I like about Japanese animation. The characters are so real that you might even believe they are real. NANA got a complex psychological background about problems of everyday life and human relationship. I must say that the last point is really well done. At certain point, you notice that the bad peoples are anyone and the victims are everyone. There is no real good choice in life and NANA largely explores this idea. You understand that love cannot bring everything and friendship can be stronger than everything. True friendship doesn’t involve any kind of exchanges, the opposite of love. At certain points, the choices facing the characters through out the story are so involving that you fall in the universe of this story of 2 girls with opposite life who cannot fight their destiny or deny their friendship.
There is some interesting analogy in NANA mostly around everyday life and everyday worries. Some of them, mostly the ones coming from Osaki NANA, really define me well. I was scared of knowing what was going on between NANA and Hachiko (the other NANA) because I understood the sense of many things during the whole show. At every beginning, we got what seem to be some letter passages between both NANA. I understood that this context can only be a tragedy, and I was right. Osaki just lose herself more and more at the passing of time, and the same goes for Hachiko. Life is heavier to carry at each moment and you understand this by watching NANA. “You need someone who can help you to carry this weight”, NANA is full of these little line that make you wonder how much you can go forward.
Another line from Osaki NANA I like is “I used to go contrary of the current until I couldn’t do it anymore. I understand now that being carried by it is not a bad thing either.” This line is one of mine and I was shocked seeing someone else using it. Another line from Osaki was “I used to hate everyone.” or “I could do anything for my dreams even if it means I will lose everything.” These kinds of thing remind me of who I am and this is the most powerful way to show important stuffs to people.
But the most important thing for me is that Osaki NANA brought back my love for music. I know now that it will never leave me anymore. As the same as her, I feel that a part of myself is missing and that the weak part of me will always be there. We cannot fight who we are because if we do, it will be the same as destroying what we are trying to build.
In Short, NANA changed my life and helped to bring back what I thought was lost forever, my unconditional love for music.

| Been Craving for a POWERFUL, Dramatic Anime. Came across NANA, & It Has DEFINITELY Satisfied What I've Been Searching For... Yes, It is POWERFUL, Dramatic, Emotionally Heart-TEARING As Much As Impact of the Cruelty of Reality in the Storyline... NANA would Make Any Shojo Anime Lover Laugh, Cry, Frustrated, Touched, Emotional, & CRY EVEN MORE~!!!
To Start off With... The Animation is Pretty... It's Nothing Extremely Spectacular, however, Everything Works Welll & Looks Beautiful... The Sceneries, The Designs of the Buildings... The Character Designs & Outfits are All Very Well Done Too... Thus, Animation is Very Well Done...
About the Music? At First, I couldn't really stand the punk rock music, being a j-pop lover... But After Watching NANA, my interests have broadened & I Like the Songs that have been Performed by both Anna Tsuchiya & OLIVIA... They're Great Songs & They Fit Well in the Anime... =) The Seiyuus Did a SPECTACULAR JOB As Well. The Whole Experience was Great in my opinion, and nothing seemed flawed to me... =/
The Storyline... With a Very Unique Coincidence Occuring Right from the Very Beginning, NANA is started off as Komatsu Nana sounds like she's reminiscing their first meeting in the future... Komatsu Nana meets Osaki Nana and they both are polar opposites of each other, however their friendship surpasses friendship... & Seems like the Most Powerful Bond Between Any Friend could Have...
NANA Starts off by bringing its viewers to view the backgrounds of both of the Nana's... Then the story goes on as though it was everyday life where nothing special happens... However, these peaceful days were necessary for the viewers to be able to explore the personalities of both Nana's further, and watch them enjoy their daily lives, the funny comedy, the development of their relationships as we meet more and more characters...
After That, NANA Starts Climbing to Reach a Strong Climax which further develops the relationship of both Nana's.... This was when it had seemed as though the characters from Komatsu Nana's Old Life were disappearing from her current life as Komatsu Nana starts getting involved with Osaki Nana's Band... & Then The Storyline Started Building Up Again from there... yet still not fully recovering from the previous climax...
Not Wanting to spoil the story, this is all i can say... But The Conflicts & Dillemas just kept Piling Up... & This was where the Characters WERE EXTREMELY NECESSARY To Be Able Bring Out The Emotions of The Viewers... Thus... I believe that The Characters and Story go hand-in-hand with each other as both Characters & Story are Needed to bring out the Best In Each Other...
Both Nana's might at first, seem like those normal, typical energetic, girly Komatsu Nana & Cool, tomboy, punk rocker Osaki Nana... However, If you thought that? Prepare to be proven Wrong, Cause They AREN'T That Shallow & They're Personalities are Deeper & Stronger than You Think. & Thus, I Think the Presentation was very well done in Bringing out Their Characteristics, Thoughts & Opinions...
The Relationship Both Nana's Share goes through Ups & Downs as well... But Overall, The Relationship is Strong & a Really Beautiful Bond to View... I'm Happy that The Anime Bothered to Venture MORE into The Lives of the Other Supporting Characters & Even Developed them quite some bit & Explored Them More... Instead of just using them and throwing them away... NANA sort of reuses them even though they might seem a bit distant... But At the End... The Past Still has a Major Impact on Both Nana's Overall Character Development & Storyline...
Like I Said, Every Character is Developed Well, All of the Black Stones, & EVEN The Rival's Band, Trapnest, which seems totally unnecessary, however, NANA actually bothered to venture to their side... & Thus, I have to Say a Very Well Done Job... =)
With All This Said... My Overall Impression of NANA is that... I'm REALLY Attached to the Characters of This Series, & I Believe that's What Makes an Anime Series Great... Its Characters, & If They're Developed So Well, You Can Imagine That They're REAL... Those Animes are Definitely Better than the Usual Average ones around... Personally, I myself can Relate to the Selfish, Sensitive side of Osaki Nana, though i don't share similar tastes in the way she dresses...
Throughout the Progress of the Series, I Kept Finding Myself Crying & Calling Komatsu Nana Stupid For Constantly Choosing the Wrong Choice... 2 Choices and 1 of them Leads to the Truest Happines Anyone Can Have, she Just HAD To Pick the WRONG ONE?! WHY?! I Would have Hated The Series, but NANA had Explained Both Sides Well, & Thus, I Am Able to Accept the Storyline as it is now... However, I REALLY WISHED FOR THE OTHER ONE!!!
Well, Firstly, It is because of the Cruelty of Reality... I Guess, if you are able to look at it through Komatsu Nana's Point of View, When you have no one to lean on, you will rely on the first help you can get... & Thus... This would Hurt Most of The Viewers... Thus, If you don't Share Komatsu Nana's Point of View... You would then Agree with Osaki Nana's Point of View, which i share as well... However, at the end of the series... I Feel that, Reality's Cruel, But If this is how Life Is... then Let it Be. We Truly Do Not Have Any Control over Someone Else's Choices & Decisions in Life...
Hence... NANA is a DRamatic, Powerful & an EMOTIONALLY HEART-RIPPING Series!!! Yet REALISTICALLY CRUEL~!!! T_T If you're the kind of viewer like Me Who Prefers a Happy Ending Rather than a Cruel, Realistic Ending... You Won't Be Able to Fully Enjoy nor be Fully Satisfied with NANA... But Then Again... The Final Ending of NANA... I have to Say that It was a Really Nice Ending, a nice Way to End such a Climatic Series... Or Maybe It's Just Me... =/
But Yet Again... I Won't Forget NANA for being One of the Most Powerful Animes of 2006 Out There... If they're going to Make a Second Season, I'll DEFINITELY WATCH IT!!!
Of Course, I Only Recommend this Anime for those viewers who are interested in a really dramatic, slice-of-life, powerful anime that will make you cry... about love and life...

| Despite the many positive opinions the series gets here and elsewhere, it didnt appeal to me. Do not mind my denunciating review. I write it to focus mainly in the negative aspects in the series.
From the first episode I thought this series would turn into one of the better ones for 2006. But unfortunately the rest of the series didnt meet my expectations.
Probably it had to do with the way of presentation. Instead of the usual romance titles the series takes a different approach and presents the characters rather realistically, without using any of the
qualities that would romanticize them as it occurs usually in shoujo. I agree too that this is intended for the audience who like drama and soap operas. Even if I dont watch such series I really wouldnt mind if
Nana was a live-action series instead of an animated one. Really what is the point in making animated something that could have turned much better into live-action? I try to avoid such kind of animated series. Though I find that the animators did a decent job im presenting the world of the manga, of which I havent read.
Thats my major gripe with the series. There is so much chatter about trivialities, so much worry about mostly useless reasons for worry, that unless you really care about the life of music celebrities, I am afraid this series will not appeal to you. The story drags on and one and only a couple of episodes had some redeeming qualities. It appears that the series was made with the manga readers in mind or those obsessed enough to buy the merchandise or visit the places the anime and manga depict. After every episode there was an introduction of goods related to the series. I understand that most of Japanimation is commercial but this was too much for me to handle, watching advertisements after every episode.
As for the characters, the fact that they were animated ruined it. While characters like the shy Nana and Leila were good in some episodes, they had to fall in the same level with the rest. I havent seen any worse characters. It doesnt have to do with the fact that most of them dressed eccentrically and used their mobile phones in a way that played with my patience. The fact is most of them were real assholes. While series like Honey and Clover, despite the flaws, used more subtlety in presenting the characters, here they were some of the most shallow I ever watched and the music they played was even shallower. A pity because there was a chance to play some decent songs.
Overall one of the worst and most dissapointing series I watched. I felt I had more to gain if I flipped through a girl's magazine than watching Nana. I guess the manga characters were better.

| NANA is a mature shoujo/jousei series that does something that not many shoujo series have done to date: portray the story of two very different characters who come together not only by their seemingly different personalities and lifestyles, but also intertwined by the threads of fate and their intertwining relationships. NANA is quite unapologetic in its presentation-it's a slice of life series that shows the characters are quite human, with factors one could relate with as well as stark character flaws. And to be honest, NANA is quite distinctly a character driven series, which ultimately drives the story along. Some of the characters one may come to love or love to hate, but all have a quality that stands out on their own, and it's one series that I was surprised to come out of with a distinct, memorable impression of each character.
Nana Oosaki and Nana Komatsu couldn't be any more different in their personalities, despite sharing the bond of having the same name. When they meet aboard a train one fateful, snowy night bound for Tokyo, they both had the same dream: to start life from a new perspective in the big city. Nana K wanted to start anew from a romantic standpoint, venturing to live with her boyfriend whom had been accepted to art school-while leaving behind a trail of a painful love interests and an insatiable desire to be loved. Nana O seeks the big city for the opportunities to hit it big as a punk rock lead singer, while leaving behind a town filled with bittersweet yet painful memories. Her goal: to lead her band Black Stones to success and aim beyond the success of a rival band: Trapnest, one which an old love (Ren) had joined long before.
It's quite interesting to see how Nana O and Nana K (affectionately known as Hachi ^^) meet and relate on a multitude of occasions-from having the same name to sharing the same apartment interests and eventually living together. Yet, as one watches the series, despite the characters' stark differences in personality and appearances, they are tied by much more than sharing the same name- and this is shown, almost poetically, through the people they know and relate with, through the emotional ups and downs and personal testimonies, and through the rather stark ironies that come to pass between the two.
Primary characters reach beyond Hachi and Nana O to the Black Stones (Nobu, Shin, Yasu) and Trapnest (Ren, Takumi, Reira), and even the secondary characters (i.e. Junko) exhibit strengths and personalities beyond what peer series may allot with the characters.
What might turn quite a few people off is the tendency for emotions to run high with this series-I know personally there were times I wanted to throw a book at some of the characters for the stupid decisions they made or the lamentations they had. At the same time, that's actually part of the point-they're distinctly human and shown almost tragically so. Hachi for example is a girl driven by adoration, and part of the reason for her nickname is that it's hard not to love her, she's like a little puppy XD But she's a jilted, flawed lover, continuously falling in and out of relationships-a flaw that comes across in the series quite distinctly. It's not until she's hit with a reality check that she starts to break from that cycle and gain some solidarity. Nana O is a tough-as-nails, funny girl, but inside her tough exterior is a sensitivity many don't see, and what ultimately starts to pull her apart. Among the Black Stones: Shin is a 15 year old boy who's too mature for his age, Yasu is a lawyer who laments times gone past, and Nobu is a young man who can be too sensitive/immature in the same manner as Hachi. Among Trapnest: Reira is a woman torn by her identity and loneliness who has singing as a sole since of solace, Takumi is at times cold and brute and guilty of showing less attention to those around him than himself, and Ren is a conflicted soul who tries to move on despite hiding his true self, similar to Nana O.
On the other hand, there are so many points of this series where I really liked the characters and genuinely laughed at their quirks and interactions. They feel human, and while the series does revolve around their ups and downs, it never fully forgets its ability to be lighthearted and show the bonds of love and friendships that are made within the course of the series-something refreshingly valid among other romance/slice of life series.
Moving to the other technical aspects of NANA (I know, I've talked a lot about the story/characters- but that's how expansive it is for an almost 50 episode series), Animation standards are very good for a 2006 series. There may be a few who might have qualms about the character design (characters looking stick thin, for example), but that's Ai Yazawa's art style- and in my opinion it's a great transition from the manga to an anime series.
NANA definitely gains high marks in the Sound aspect and earns its regards as a great music series (even better than BECK in my opinion), something I didn't make mention of when discussing the story/characters. I think Anna Tsuchiya made a nice Nana O from a musical standpoint, though many people debate it because the image of Nana O, particularly from the manga standpoint, is a punk rock singer. Anna's more pop/rock/grunge, but she fits the sleeve of the role well. She has a bite to her that carries the character well. "Rose" is arguably the best anime OP I've heard in a long time, coupled with visuals and an infectious sense of energy. Some of the other songs she contributed to the series ("Kuroi Namida"; "Lucy"; and insert "Zero") are also well noted, catchy and great rock songs. Reira's, leader of Trapnest, choice of singer, in my eyes was excellent with Olivia Lufkin. "Wish" is also one of the best anime OPs I've seen/heard in a long time, and her other contributions to the series ("A Little Pain"; "Winter Sleep"; "Starless Night" and insert "Shadow of Love", among many) are stellar.
Voice acting: all well done in the Japanese perspective. Paku Romi brings a light to Nana O quite like other characters she has portrayed. Kaori (who plays Nana K/Hachi) actually exceeded most of the other roles she's played in my eyes here. Other recognizable VA work include Aya Hirano (Reira...which surprised me quite a bit), Seki Tomakazu (Nobu); Kiuchi Hidenobu (plays Ren in the series, but most know him as Tenma from Monster), and Ishida Akira (Shin) among many.
The only other qualm I had regarding NANA overall was the way the ending was handled in some modes. While it leads into a potential second season, it did leave quite a few people confused, particularly if they weren't following the manga (which is something I did while watching the series). For me, though, I thought the ending was bittersweet, as it leads into another chapter of the story and leaves a strong tragic impression in some modes of things to come.
I would highly recommend NANA to own in an anime collection, and I'm certainly buying the series when it comes to DVD in the states. It is a lengthy series, but its one of the best series I've seen focusing on characters in a slice of life/drama/music series I've seen to date, and once you find the flow of the series, it's hard not to get drawn into it.

| A powerful viewing experience. As real a portrait as one could ask for of what it means to be female, Nana poses an important question: "Is it possible for two women to sustain a friendship?" I think that this series is, in part, meant as a message to young Japanese women to "Snap out of it: Choose! or the choice will be made for you."
It is not for nothing that both female protagonists share the same name. They represent the two divergent roads facing all women, and Japanese women in particular: (1) try to make it on your own in a man's world, or (2) depend upon others to take care of/control you. The series masterfully depicts the impossibility of a pure choice either way, and the certainty of pain regardless of the route chosen.
The seemingly dominant and powerful Osaki Nana is deeply sensitive and thinks about others. Yet, she also realizes that she is a selfish control-freak. The series spends much more time inside this Nana's head than the other's. It's a more interesting place to be because Osaki Nana has her singing -- something to call her own, whereas the other Nana has nothing. Osaki Nana is more conscious. She chooses her pain.
The superficially innocent and saccharin Komatsu Nana is, because of her complete helplessness, the most selfish of all -- a lightning-rod for emotional disaster, moving from boyfriend to boyfriend, wreaking havoc in the lives of all who get close to her. She represents the typical Japanese girl -- still demurely wiping amniotic fluid off of her cheeks at age twenty, afraid to stand on her own two feet. Lacking Osaki Nana's artistic passion, Komatsu Nana's skills lie in the kitchen and the bedroom. She reaps the consequences of her passive life and lets her pain happen to her.
Let's imagine a huge painting of all of the series characters at a party. The point of this painting -- the source of all of its power -- would be the two Nanas, with Osaki Nana rendered the most clearly and sympathetically of all. Taken separately, the rest of the characters, some more interesting than others, would comprise a mere soft-focus soap opera -- a matrix supporting the two protagonists. The whole point of the party was for the two halves to meet -- to spy each other across the room. I've seen this before in real life, where the real relationship was between two women, their male escorts like disposable mates for some Queen Ant.
Yes, this series is about female sickness. I've only seen up to episode 34, so I'm hoping that it ends up showing a way to female wellness.

| Well, I've seen up until episode 30, full review to come.
Anyway, how I feel about this series. Aside from a TON of gushy stuff, it's a fun series! You have to be able to swallow a bit of gush to get to it though, but I like to compare this series to a less naive Full Moon wo Sagashite... with a dash of Beck ;p. If you want your Beck, your gonna have to swallow the Full Moon part.

| The best anime this year, and one of my over all favourites.
This review is based off the first 30 episodes. It will be updated upon the series completion.
The two girls, Nana and Nana (Hachi) are the opposite of personalities but still manage to build a strong and touching bond that may transcend what's commonly viewed as a "friends only" relationship, while they live together in the same apartment going though life and love.
The series got me interested from the first episode as it appeals to my age demographic, late teens or early twenties, trying to find a place in life and starting out on your own.
It shows the characters learning important life lessons while displaying very poignant emotions and asking some tough questions. It gives off a foreboding sense at times so it can be a little depressing, too.
Some have claimed it's too melodramatic, or not enough about the band and too much about relationships.
However, I find it more down to earth then most series, a realistic portrayal for a slice of life series without being boring, the extra zing of band members thrown in really adds something. I think some people are just too quick to label series as a soap opera material. I can't stand soap operas, this has believable actions and consequences through and through with a nice amount of well timed comedy for good measure. It also has amazing music, as it should for a series about a band.
Highly recommended!

| Since NANA has the same writer as Paradise Kiss (which I found out later. xD), I'm not surprised why it turned out so well. If you've watched Paradise Kiss and liked it, this is a must see. (or vice versa) NANA shows you the more dramatic way of life while still keeping it realistic. There are still episodes coming out, and it's very addicting...I can't wait. 8D
BTW. I will add more to this review later, so please check back.

| This review is based on the first 26 episodes. A shoujo anime about the friendship between two girl roomates who live together after moving to tokyo. Despite being a guy I found following the developing reltionship and storyline to be engrossing.

| I highly highly recommend Nana to most of you.
Few are the anime that realistically portray individuals in such a manner that we are intrigued with their lives as if they existed, and thus become anxious for the outcome of their story.
Though coincidence and fate lay the foundation for Nana, its primary goal seems to be the extremely well thought out portrayal focusing on two individuals as they live through some extraordinary circumstances.
The highlights of Nana are its well-scripted comedic and dramatic plot, an incredible soundtrack, and wonderful characters.
Its downsides are episode 6, which is exactly the same as episode 1 for some odd reason. And, it just won't appeal to some of you with its slightly sappy story as it develops.
Nana is about two women age 20, and follows the course of their lives as they pursue romance and life. It's obviously targetting a young female crowd, but this is such an exceptional anime (now at the end of season one... I really hope a season two is forthcoming!), that I personally rank Nana among the top anime I've seen.

| Nana is such an interesting anime because of the dynamic between the two girls. It's a story about 2 girls who are totally opposite to each other, but get along rather well and care for each other deeply.
