Mix the painfully boring (yet somewhat intriguing) .hack\\sign with the light and fluffy (yet still painfully boring) .hack\\Legend of the Twilight, and you will get .hack\\roots.

I watched this anime well after completing all 3 GU games, which helped the proceedings feel more logical and a bit less anti-climatic. On the other hand, the good things I got of this one could have easily been put into 10 great episode rather than 26 horrible ones...
With that in mund:

Animation sucks. It's slow, clunky and the characters who are not in the game look like generic heaps of, well, you know... It gets 4 for the beautiful lost grounds, though...

Sound is good. I like the music and the VAs seem to do their best with what's there...

The story is just. plain. horrid.
The horrible pacing is to blame for that low score, as in 26 episodes you get about 20 that are pure filler and you just won't care about. Not to mention that half way into the series, half the characters who appear in the opening sequence are gone, making you wonder why no one bothered to change it. On the same note, the characters from the games (minus Ovan and Haseo) only appear in the second half of the series, but since Haseo isn't supposed to meet them untill the games, they have nothing to do with him, and thus you're treated to boring sub plots of them "interacting" with the other survivors of the first half, namely the unbearable Tabby, but more on that, later. All the above result in an anime with a main character who isn't in the center of the action more often than he is, and sub-characters who are just not interesting enough to carry the plot...

Which brings us to Characters:
I like Haseo because he's an ass. Of course, being the main, he is bound to change his ways and learn to love *que dramatic music*, but for a good part of the series he's an ass, and is interesting. However, him being an ass, means the writers have to put in the extra effort to explain to me while the other characters are so interested in his unfriendly self. In the games, this is mostly a successful effort. Here- not so much. Exepct Ovan and his rival (whos name and character change during the course of the series), which you do ( if you played the game) know what drew them to Haseo, the rest just seem to take a liking to him for no reason other than him being the main character, which is stupid. Not to mention that the dialogue they spew is just idiotic. All characters in this anime talk in cryptic messages that were hard for me, who cleared the 3 games to follow, so I can just imagine what it sounds like to someone who didn't. Also, *major spoilers* if you played the game, you know that Ovan is evil, and thus you can, to a degree, understand some of the characters' actions and decisions, as well as their alignemt on the good/evil scale (Exept for Pi's multiple personalities and general evilness, which are a mystery to me) *end spoiler*

But if you haven't played the games, all the characters' actions seem stupid and illogical.

All this leads the value of this anime to be very very low, only worth it if you're a fan of the games, to explain some of the murky background to you, and even then, I'm not sure it's worth it...

Enjoyment is pretty low regardless of you playing the games, though, as the pace is just glacial, and nothing interesting will transpire for hours on end...

Overall, worth watching for some of the games back-story. But a horrible, horrible anime

The storyline is broken up into two different parts and seems as if each part was written by different people and then tossed together. .hack//Roots is anticlimactic with no resolution what so ever serving as the prelude to the .hack//GU video games for the Playstation 2. If you want to find out how the story ends then you will need to purchase the three subsequent games.

After I finished watching this whole series I came to the conclusion that this is one terrible Anime. The .hack// series is famous for being slow paced and a tad boring but Roots takes it to a whole new level.

The story dragged on for ages without any real developement and finally at the ending the anime wasnt concluded! They will probably make a game or another anime with the conclusion. Even so, I'd say that that's relly cheap.

There is no real goal in this anime. It seems like it's just about a bunch of people who hang out in a chat room and talk about random stuff that doesnt seem to be revelant to anything.

The characters in Roots arent anything special. We have the todays normal Emo hero who gets on your nerves and acts like he's the toughest kid in the block.
And we have an annoying cat girl who keeps on saying "I'll try my best" etc. without actually doing anything. Seems like they didnt think of anything better to add.

So, without a story and any good characters, there really isnt anything else to this anime. It's just a waste of time. Even if you are a .hack// series fan you might want to reconsider watching this. Out of all the other series, this is easily the worst.

While not the best anime, .Hack//Roots at least proves to be A LOT better than its' predecessor, .Hack//Signs.

Talk about milking a frandchise for all its worth. This is starting to feel a lot like DBZ, Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc. etc.

Animation - Good. Nothing outstanding. If you have seen other .hack animations. This one is pretty much the same.

Sound - Not a fan of the music in this one. The VO sounds decent. But heck like I know what they're saying.

Story - Well after like so many different .hack, you would think they found out what the Legend of the Twilight is all about. Well anways, now a new group of characters take over to try and figure out the mystery. As all the reviewers before me mentioned... the story is slow. Yes it is, way too slow for my taste. I'm an action type of guy and the slow progression got a tad on my nerve.

Character - The characters fell rather dated. As a matter of fact, you can find traits that carried over from the previous series. Anyways, I did not find anything memorable about the characters.

In conclusion, this anime will doubtfully appeal to anyone except to those who are fans of the .hack series. The story progression are slow and lacks action (a lot of it is conversations). So if you're the type seeking for action search elsewhere.

After watching each episode I'm left more and more confused...

Based on episodes 1-13 though, since the episodes beyond it is beyond my grasp.

While this had elements of .hack that we all know and love, this seriously fails in comparison. Only thing that kept me watching the next episode was the hope of the next episode atleast giving clues to wtf is going on.

Reading beyond may include spoilers.

Pros
- Nice animation, pretty smooth
- Picks up the style of former .hack and leads into the mystery of the world.
- Pretty interesting.

Cons oh boy....
- By the end of each episodes, it seems atleast one or more characters leaves.
- After each episode only more questions comes, while no answers.
- Theres a strange evil Kite looking guy... whcih i have no fliping idea whether is a protagonist or antagonist.
- Original antagonists simply leaves after doing something to the guildmaster of the protagnist, what and why isnt realy explained... not even how he manages it.
- No Aura, or any familiar characters, while all the .hack before atleast had aura. She's mentioned though as leaving the world because she got bored of it or something.
- The main characters name isn't nice at all, and while his character look is pretty good, his weapons looks terrible.
- Everytime the anime gets you heated up for a major fightscene, it leaves you GREATLY disapointed.

Wow, talk about a slow moving anime. Gheez, even the ending credits are more exciting then the first 3 episodes of this anime. I have yet to watch the other episodes, but hopefully it picks up somewhat.
Though, it seems .hack//roots comes from the same writer as .hack//sign, along with the still frames of animation that are sprinkled within this story. As we all know from .hack//sign, the anime moved slow as hell. I would like to call .hack//roots the same as .hack//sign, a chat room.
Bottom line, if you didn't like .hack//sign too much you definately not enjoy this one. If you loved .hack//sign, you might be able to feel your way through this one. Otherwise, if you don't know what .hack//sign is... don't bother. There are plenty more anime out there with better story than this MMORP.

This edit is for the rest of the series:
What a letdown! I thought it would finally get started, some decent story, some action, some sense. What a mistake. The characters make no sense at all. Half of them are plain annoying and serve no purpose whatsoever.
The fighting animations are rather lame, many stills, nothing much happening.
The sound is ok, but not as good as in the previous .hack installations. There always were some songs that you would remember, not so in this one. The only reason I even got so far is because I hate to stop in the middle, even if it's bad. But I never have watched so many eps on fast forward as with this series...

This edit is to represent the changes for Ep. 6-8, the series has gotten significantly better! Finally the story is set into motion and the character start to develop. It took long but could be getting quite good!

Old:

This is based on episodes 1-5

I can basically second what the reviewer before me said. Except that, although the music is ok, I like the OST of the previous hack series a lot better.

The technical stuff is all ok, as was to be expected. But who wrote this "story"? There is basically NOTHING happening for the first 4 or 5 episodes. Just a ridiculously played out joining of a guild. Lets face it, in "real" MMORPG life it goes like this: "wanna join?" "sure" "/invite" thats it. It is not something you ponder over for weeks and make a philosophical question out of.

So, while I like the FX and sound, I have a beef with the storyline so far. Lets hope it gets better. Its not yet bad enough to stop me from watching it though :)
