The even more epic sequel to Crest of the Stars, Banner of Stars lives up to its predecessor's expectations, even managing to go a bit beyond. If you loved CotS, you will love BotS, there's simply no other way to put it.

Animation wise there is only one real change, and fortunately it is for the better. Of the three installments, BotS has the best animation, most likely because of its heavier emphasis on action. The space battles are gorgeous to watch and, despite a little bit of scene repetition, do not cheat one bit. Character designs still leave a bit to be desired, but there are no steps backward. All in all, top of the line animation.

As with all three installments, the sound rating remains pretty fixed. Again, same opening and ending theme, outstanding Seiyuu, and background music that establishes moods well.

I think what makes me most fascinated about the CotS series is that we are presented the story entirely from the Abh perspective. This makes the battles very intense, as the viewer learns of the battlefield events right as the Abh admirals and generals do. Not only this, we also are given the battle from the perspective from Lafiel and Jinto's ship, a mere drop of water admist an ocean of Abh fleets. The combination of these two perspectives within the Abh point of view make the story incredibly exciting to watch. Everything comes together beautifully.

Jinto and Lafiel are still of the highest character standards. Their growth, maturity, and understanding of both themselves and each other continues to blossom. In addition, however, we are introduced to the fabulous caste of Abh admirals who, while not possessing the depth given to Jinto and Lafiel, are still remarkably well designed. Each are given distinct personalities and approaches to the battlefield, keeping the viewer on edge the entire time. Each admiral is faced with enormously important decisions that impact the lives of all those they command, and seeing each of the personalities handle these situations is fascinating. Not only this, each understands the weight and gravity of war and are not brainwashed with the idealistic pacifist crap that has become dominant in many modern anime. Just when you thought Crest of the Stars couldn't get any better, it just did.

Banner of the Stars is, in my opinion, the most amazing installment of the trilogy; definitely one of my favorite series I have ever watched. As to not sound redundant in continually spurting out priase, I shall stop now. For its greatest effect, I suggest watching Crest of the Stars first.

Very highly recommended.

Banner of the Stars I, the sequel to Crest of the Stars, takes place 3 years later and places our heroes in the midst of a growing war. Defending the Abh's new-found territory is their job, and Jinto and Lafiel are set to do what they do best. A wide array of side characters also gets introduced, arranged in weird relationships and put forth their personalities onto the battlefield.

In CotS, the story was more adventure-oriented, with several stop-points for Jinto and Lafiel (also the main focuses) to develop one of the best relationships in anime history. Now, in BotS, the story turns into a more action-oriented show (I feel a little disappointed) with more seat-edging space battles and suspenseful character dialogues. This time around, there are a LOT more characters (I had a very hard time keeping track of them all), each with their own interesting quirks that sparks life into the plunge that is the space battle - a reality of life and death and epic struggle. While Jinto and Lafiel further their dynamic relationship, the side characters get an equal amount of spotlight as well, from revealing dialogues to their loyalty to one another. Even from the turning from an adventure to the actual battle, BotSI never lets down on it's relentless pacing and coverage of everything to do with the battle. (Though I found the long talks of strategy/bridge conversations they had a little uneventful, but at least the ratio of talk:battle is very nice.)

However, we never get to see the "Human"'s point of view, so the slaughter came off less epic than it should be. I hope that some Human coverage can be shown (HUGE foreshadowing with that once scene in one of the later episodes, but I can't recall it...) in II.

Though I miss the adventureous part of this series, Banner of the Stars I is still very enjoyable, with high-tension battle scenes and the ever ongoing dynamic growth between Jinto and Lafiel. Onwards to Banner of the Stars II!

A truly epic space adventure with deep characters and intruiging character dynamics, "Banner of the Stars" will keep you in its' grip from beggining to end. Every episode of this series will leave you wanting to watch this next one right away.

(Also, let me preface this by saying that I watched Banner of the Stars before Crest of the Stars, and until I looked on the reviews here, I did not even know BotS was a sequel)

The animation is good; I enjoyed watching the character models. Facial expressions were especially detailed, and the use of minute changes in the facial expressions served as a realistic way of transmitting emotions; this really allows the emotions of the characters to come to the forefront.

The animations for the battle scenes were repetitive at times (same animations for exploding mines at times, for instance) but for the most part the battle animations were truly spectacular and well detailed with amazing backgrounds.

The soundtrack is one of the places this anime really shines. The opening theme sets the tone with an epic orchestral song with no words, only the song with beautiful pictures of space in the background. This anime even has its own made-up language which is spoken by the Abh. The voice actors did a tremendous job; side characters like the various Admirals, and the members of the Basroil crew all did a good job of acting. Lafiel and Jinto especially did a good job of acting their parts.

The story is probably the one place that the anime doesn't really shine; as the anime is focused mainly on the characters and has no real plot twists or developments. The story is focused mainly on the activities of Lafiel and Jinto's ship the Basroil and its' small part in "Operation Phantom Flame". And even though this is the main focus of the anime, throughout the entire series we get only through the first battle of the operation, and don't find out if it was successful or not (guess I have to watch the sequel).

However, showing the anime completely from the side of one of the combatants is incredibly unique and interesting; in most series the narration is omniscient and we find out the plans and strategies of both side, and are introduced to characters on both sides. But, in this anime we are shown everything from the side of the Abh, while the United Mankind is left mysterious and unkown. I really enjoyed this unique way of storytelling, as we know just as much about the battle plans of the United Mankind as the Abh Admirals do.

The characters are great; I love the interactions between the various Admirals and their Cheifs of Staff as they discuss strategies and other things. Also, the dynamics between the characters on the Basroil is extremely intriguing. The relationship between Jinto and Lafiel and Jinto and the others is also interesting as Jinto comforts and supports Lafiel in her struggles as captain of the Basroil.

This anime is incredibly interesting; the fast pace and intriguing characters allow me to reccomend this anime to anyone; I can't wait to watch the sequel.

Very worthy and highty addictive anime. Must have watched Crest of stars beforehand to funny enjoy the story however.

Actual proceedings in this anime are rather confusing at times. But superb direction and deep involving characters save the show.

Sounds are top-class but animation is a bit sketchy at times. However, considering this is 5years old it is absolutely beautiful.

Banner of the Stars I is the most difficult of the 3 series. It uses so much jargon, so many novel references and the Abh personel's background to those who havent read the novels remain unknown so that I'd say this part of the series is aimed exclusively at the novel readers. Even having watched Crest of the Stars prior to that it didnt help to clarify much. I've explained in the Crest of the Stars the series plot.

Here instead of the adventure of Ghintec and Lamhirh the setting changes completely and Operation Phantom Flame takes place, namely the war between Abh and United Mankind. Characters that made a short appearance in CoS like Painaich (one of the vilest and charming characters I've seen) and her assistant Sespir are given more screentime here. Also the Bibauth brothers Nefec and Nelaith appear, that take command of the Abh fleet. Their constant arguing makes the series funny and tense at some moments. Also the Crown Prince Dusanh and his assistant Cipair appear (his constant teasing of Cipair gets the deserved answer) as well as Loic, sister of Cluearh, a noble who had some matters to deal with Ghintec and Lamhirh in CoS. She has an interesting discussion with the two.

With so many characters I felt very confused. There was so much dialog and the battle proceedings were so many and tedious that I didnt enjoy it as much as the rest. But I'll give them credit for the direction. It needs to be rewatched many times, episode by episode to grasp the battles and their outcome. Perhaps it is one of the best animated sci-fi battles in terms of plot developement and strategy. It urges me to read the novel even more.

The ending of the series is similar to that of Crest of Stars and only in the final episodes the two main characters divert attention from the strategic mumbo-jumbo heard throughout the series.

Animation improves, sound and music are only fit for space battles and not much else

As part of the Seikai trilogy this is indeed the most challenging to watch. Recommended if you liked CoS and would like to go without plot holes to BoS II and III.

It's bloody amazing what you can do with a normal storyline and awesome direction. For if you see Seikai no Senki's plot - it is average at the minimum. It can be best compared to a galactic crusade (sounds like a cliche anime title). So what sets it apart from an otherwise hackneyed prospect? Firstly, it has fabulous direction and secondly, the characters and their interactions make it one of the most meorable anime I've seen.

As others have previously stated, this is a story telling 'Space Opera.' This anime gives you a very broad overview of events that take place while still maintaining a focus on the main characters. The characters themselves are portrayed very well (as they were in Seikai no Monshou) and had good development. The animation of the series is the only thing with which I can find any fault, mediocre quality at times along with recycling scenes, though this hardly dampens the anime. Overall this is an anime not for those who are looking for action, but more of a drama/action combination.

The second part of the epic space opera. While Banner of the Stars is a worthy sequel to Crest of the Stars (you can find my review for Crest on my profile), it has some serious flaws as well.

The main flaw of Banner of the Stars is that the series wastes more than half of its overall length on massive space-fleet battles instead of story-progression or character development. At first the strategic planning and decision making during the heat of battle are exciting, but all too soon they become boring. Whereas Crest of the Stars suffered from too much source material for a mere 13 episodes, Banner of the Stars obviously didn't have enough material for the same length.

Even the main strength of the first part, the relationship between Jinto and Lafiel, gets overshadowed by the repetitive space-battles. A pity, really, as this time we are introduced to several interesting side-characters, and the best moments of the series are without a doubt those where our main duo interacts with the other crew-members of their ship. There's even a nice attempt at a love-triangle.

While the story goes downhill, the animation improves somewhat; the spaceships move smoothly and there are occasionally some very nice light/shadow effects on characters' faces. Banner obviously had a bigger budget than Crest (or perhaps they just spared a lot by reusing the same music). It is really too bad that this part just isn't as enjoyable as Crest of the Stars was.

The DVD-release by Bandai Entertainment is spread on just three discs this time and has some nice extras. Recommended to those who enjoyed Crest of the Stars but would have wanted more space-battles. Those who wanted a deeper storyline and more character development will have to wait until Banner of the Stars II.

Felt like an animated version of Star Trek, without as much of the Star Trek jargon, but just as confusing.

The story was complex, but you didn’t have to understand everything to enjoy this anime, however, I’d have liked to understood more. Thing was that during this anime, there wasn’t much history or background information of the conflict. There are places’ names said, squadrons mentioned and people referred, but a lot of them are hard to grasp, especially the places and squadrons without some sort of image and introduction.

Animation quality was okay for its time, but some people may feel it’s not that good due to the overuse of blue and darker colours. The ships were nicely designed but the characters are much simpler. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but when their characteristics aren’t too colourful either, you start to run into trouble. The lead male I hated, why? Well, because he reminded me of a younger version of Leonardo de Caprio. I know that’s a personal thing, but it was a stupid decision. The other characters were far more interesting in contrast.

Not something that I liked, the ending was an anticlimax and the only reason I didn’t hate this was that it vaguely reminded me of Tenchi. Too slow and too much complexity about politics and a whole range of fanciful battle tactics bombard your mind whilst watching this.

If you liked Crest of the Stars, then add up to 4 points onto my score.

I must first say that I highly recommend watching Crest of the Stars (Seikai no Monshou) before giving this one a try. Although Banner of the Stars (Seikai no Senki) is probably watchable without CotS, I would think most people will enjoy BotS more with some backstory, and BotS does make several references to the events in CotS. Keep in mind that this review will assume that you've watched Crest of the Stars already, so I may have spoilers for CotS.

That said, now on with the actual review.

Banner of the Stars continues the story of our favorite two protagonists, but widens the scope to include other people that takes part in the battle for a sord (basically, the natural object that allows travel between plane space and real space). This battle takes place 3 years after Jinto's and Lafiel's trip in Crest of the Stars.

Unfortunately for some, because the battle takes quite a bit of screen time, and several other people get some screen time, dialogue between our main protagonists is much more limited. It's not too bad, since the dialog between the other characters (especially between the commanders and their first mates) are quite good, entertaining, and fun, though some of it kindof distracts away from the main story. The main story is about a battle for a star system, and I find the scenes to be quite intense.

But don't get the impression that Jinto and Lafiel get swept aside. The Supply Officer and the Captian, and their ship and crew take center stage in this series, despite only having a small role in the battle. And we still get further development of the gripping relationship between the Count and the Princess.

The sequel the Crest of the Stars does not disappoint. Its more of the same thing with slightly better animation. In this its more of a space wars anime, and clearly aimed at those who like space anime. View this after CotS for more character depth and some background to the war.

!!!!This Anime is so UNDERRATED. This anime is much better anime than crap like KGNE or SCRAPPED PRINCESS (not to mention other crappy ones).!!!!

Another Thrilling part of the Stars series. I picked this anime up right after i finished watching the crest of the stars, and i can confidently say that i'm not disappointed at all. With even higher excitement than the prequel this anime turns out to be a worthy sequel to the Stars series, which i think in my opinion, is among the best in all space themed animes if not in all anime.

Crest of the stars was more focus on the adventure of Jinto and Lafiel. Banner concentrates on the war. With it you can expect lots of explosions and space action with high quality animation. I love the spaceship designs and all the battle scenes. they are very entertaining to say the least.

Music unfortunately stays exactly the same except the crappy ending song. Expecting a whole new set of music would be too much but i did expect some variation, which there isn't much. the ending song did chang but it's really bad.

The story is rather simple. There is an umcoming and decisive battle between the Abe Empire and the Alliance and some minor events are thrown to keep things entertaining till the final showdown. No real plot twist or anything like that. this obviously makes things very obvious for us to predict.

Character interactions however are very nicely done here especially with the introduction of the sister of the Baron Febdash as the commander. Crew members are also very nice addition to provide different personalities in this anime. Jinto and Lafiels personality stays exactly the same from the Crest, and there's little progress in their relationship which i was a bit disappointed about.

But the main strength of this anime is drama. Even with linear storyline, it's characters and intense action sequences are enough to keep us on the edge of our seats. Our main characters already have been explored thus we are ready to root for them in their battles.

I loved this anime. I loved Crest of the Stars also. And i really hope the Banner of the Stars 2 keeps things going. this series is turning out to be the best thing i've seen in a long time. If you get a chance to watch Crest of the Stars this one is a absolute must.

!!!!This Anime is so UNDERRATED. This anime is much better anime than crap like KGNE or SCRAPPED PRINCESS (not to mention other crappy ones).!!!!

In case You haven't seen Crest of the Stars I strongly suggest You to. You may watch Banner first, but You will loose a great dose of enjoyment if You won't see it as a second part, which it is.

This is the second installment of the trilogy, based on novels by Morioka Hiroyuki. Banner I follows right when Crest has ended. The same set of characters, excluding those who died, including some new ones - main stage still is occupied by our amazing duo, Jinto and Lafiel. Main change in Banner to other parts of the trilogy is more action. Banner I has amazing battle taking place and some people who are watching it for the dialogues (which are simply splendid, nothing less) will be dissapointed by it. I love those dialogues, yet the battle was also well
done. Most of the ratings are the same, because the anime (which is a rarity!!) maintained the incredibly high level it's prequel had. There is very little bad things to say about this unique and original show. It has Abh language, music greatly similar to it's predecessor, animation done in the same way (and battle scenes are longer here, so it's joy for the eyes!) and - what's it's greatest strength - characters...

How many times have you watched a show that looked as if you spent more time tying your shoes than the creators did with the show? Plenty, I’m sure. I know I have. If there’s one thing I criticize half-season anime for it’s the time wasting that is so characteristic of the length. Creators don’t seem to understand that thirteen episodes are just not the same as twenty-six. Therefore, half the anime would be exasperating and tedious filler and the other half will be half-way decent in the hope that the viewer will forget his suffering in the other half. Then they are a select few that manage to do something quite rare: be shitty throughout its entire running time. But then there are anime even rarer than that, the thirteen episode anime that is able to hold the viewer’s attention for its entirety; the half-season that doesn’t dally around and dips right into its story. Crest of the Stars has a world so complete- an admirable care to detail- that it puts most anime much longer to utter shame. It does what Twelve Kingdoms did but in a much shorter time. Filled with meaningful dialogue, outstanding characters, and a carefully structured world, Crest of the Stars is an epic, a masterpiece of its genre.

Although not as good as its prequel, Banner of the Stars is a worthy chapter to a great trilogy. Banner continues to further develop its story by giving a more detailed insight on the war between the Abh and the Aptic empire. And this is where the problem with Banner lies. The first nine episodes of this series are excellent. The dialogue is central to this show and is probably the most important aspect of the anime. However, from episode ten and on, Banner dedicates its time to a long, drawn out battle in space. Banner definitely has more action that its prequel, but ironically, it is during this very battle that I fell asleep. This tells me that this anime is not meant to have such things in it. It’s a major compliment that the most exciting things that happen in this work come not from explosions and battle scenes, but from mere conversation. I missed the dialogue in the last few episodes, and it’s just unfortunate that the battles are a necessary evil. Fortunately, by the final episode, the story returns to what makes it great in the first place- Lafiel, Jinto and good ole monologues. There’s not much else I can say about this that hasn’t already been said in my Crest review…..other than I didn’t like the ending theme and you’re not spectacularly insane if you KNOW you’re spectacularly insane. :)

Before, I had not watched the first 13 episodes of this series and that was a huge mistake. Watching Banner of the Stars first is definitely not worth it, because all the main character development and story introduction is unclear. Therefore, watch Crest of the Stars first!

Banner of the Stars can be broken down into two segments. 1) The focus of Lafiel's assault ship (a very weak ship, within a very large squadron of ships) and her crew. The highest this interaction goes is on the level of unit commander and it focuses more on individual ship fighting as viewed from Lafiel's officers. 2) The grand picture of battleship war with key figure heads on the level of admirals and chief commander. Here, overall tactics of all ships are discussed.

As a continuation to Crest, Banner does a good job of maintaining consistency. The only potential problem is that it focuses exclusively on war time battles with everything taking place in some battleship or battlefield. Gone is the familiar and heart-warming situations between Jinto and Lafiel as they try to escape being captured. Of course, you can't forever focus on initial impressions and when you consider how Lafiel's life has to progress in some way or another, you can appreciate Banner's story more. However, Banner lacks intensity. Battleship fights are extremely methodical and straight up strategic. Considering how half of this series focuses on battlefield tactics, politics and strategic discussions, this can be potentially problematic.

Supplementing the large amounts of time on war fighting are the 'break time' cafe-style conversations we have between the soldiers. Here, the focus is on the individual: what they dream about, their past and personal histories as well as their worries. Through these causal talks, we get to know more about the characters themselves- although not much about what they feel about the war. In general, this style of character development enriches the whole fictional world and allows the viewer to become more a part of the actors rather than a 3rd party audience. If it wasn't for this 'get-to-know-you' aspect, it would have been truly hard to enjoy Banner of the Stars.

As a whole, Banner is mediocre. Blessed with a great first 13 episodes (Crest), Banner of the Stars is enjoyable as a continuation of an epic tale. However, by itself, Banner is somewhat lacking. Although the story pacing is well done and it does its job in story progression, it just isn't all that intense or engaging. The dialogue between this characters saves this anime from being a complete bore, however, and I appreciated the characters much. Watch it if you've seen Crest of the Stars. Otherwise, it won't be as interesting by itself.

This is a very good series.

I'm currently watching Gundam Seed, which in the same space-drama category I am finding to be many multiples better, but I am still trying not to underrate this one.

There's quite a good bit of depth in the well-developed plot here, making this an easy anime to recommend to fans.

It's tragic that this excellent series is not more popular. There are so many good things to say about, I don't know where to start.

The animation is top-notch. The best animation Bandai has ever done. Even minor actions, like someone turning their head, are animated beautifully.

The sound is so good... no bad sci-fi synth music here. It's all orchestral, and not just any orchestral. Grand, sweeping music that gives you an impression of how vast the series is. Just listen to the main theme and find out.

Characters... oh my, the characters. The characters are so good in this series - they drive the series forward. The main plot revolves around two of them, but each secondary character also has a small plot regarding him/her.

Basically, if you haven't tried this anime, try it out before judging it as 'another scifi anime'.

The story take place 3 years after crest of the stars. Banner of the stars is almost only space battle and tactics. The two main characters are still here and I love to watch them. Still great characters but didnt develop that much. Still the battles are nice to watch but little predictable. One other bad thing is that you will only see the side of the Star Force and not the United Mankind forces. But then again that doesnt stop me to watch this brillant anime.
Watch how the Abh princess Lafiel and count Jinto and their crew fight their battle. They made this anime just brillant and fun to watch.
