At first I wasn't sure that I would be interested in an animated account of a famous 18th century transvestite but after watching the series I found that I actually enjoyed it quite a bit.

In the anime, rather than being a cross-dresser, D'Eon Chevalier is the vessel for his murdered sisters soul. This aspect of the show is handled surprisingly well and turned what I thought was going to be a weird plot device into great character development.

Don't let the fact that the main character wears a dress throw you off, its a great show and it makes sense.

Glory be to the King who is in Gods Grace*

This anime is about a knight, Deon, who is on an adventure with some fellow knights to uncover the secret of the Psalms and the mystery of the death of Deon's sister. In the attempt of discovering the truth of these things the group of knights go through some trials which include fighting those who can command the power of the Psalms, which can be best described as witch craft with powers drawn from God instead of demons. In other cases confrontations between good vs evil are settled with the sword. It is here where this series shines, the fencing styled sword fighting is spectacular and very entertaining to watch.

Getting back to the story one thing this anime stresses is the theme of chivalry, where the strongest are those who are most loyal to they're king and country. Another theme this anime expresses is a religious one, where the characters look to God for strength and guidance. Throw in a little romance and drama and you get Le Chevalier D'eon, what is to me the best anime of 2007 (in region one). My regards goes to ADV Films for doing a good job with this anime.

Well, this isn't the worst anime I've seen...but it certainly wasn't one of the best ones either. I dunno, I just didn't like this show, and as much as I am trying to search for something positive to say...I can't. I just didn't like it. It was too weird, the story was sloppy and convoluted. I'm left wondering “What did I just watch?” No really, someone needs to tell me what was it I just watched!!

Since this is from Production I.G., a studio which I like a lot, I had no doubt in collecting this. It is definitely a good quality anime but of course, its not perfect

This review is a bit special as it is the first one for this serie and that this story partly takes place in my native country, France.

Reviewed up to ep 10

Animation : Characters are well drawn. Landscapes are pretty nicely made. Very few movies and anime represent Paris in the 18th century, the obvious reason is that it is pretty difficult as Paris changed so much in 250 years. The graphic work of buildings and streets is very good, considering that this anime is japanese.
there are a few glitches like buildings or businesses that would exist 100 years later, but the overall documentation research is highly commandable.
Swordfights are very nicely done as well as clothes.

Sound : Fair sound effects and good soundtrack that support the anime well. unimpressive OP/ED

Story : a fight of good against evil, even though it is not always easy to distinguish one from the other. Scenario is pretty well built with a fair level of drama and demonic creatures. the historical background seems well put together. I appreciate the depth of the story in that characters are not confined in a small area but travel as far as abroad.

Characters distinguish themselves very well. They are rich and have quite some depth. These are more Japanese Characters than French ones, which is understandable somehow. The bad guys are far from stupid and the good guys even have weaknesses.

Value : definitely a collectible item, but I don't know which re-watch value it may have.

Enjoyment : Although interesting to watch, I am not hooked to this anime as much as some others.

In short, this anime should please those in search of a different anime with some beastly creatures without falling into the dungeon and Dragons caricature. Definitely worth a try.
