| A fantasy anime with a healthy dose of comedy, Slayers is a story about Lina Inverse, a sorceress. However, she is not your typical anime heroine; Lina isn't interested in justice or doing the "right" thing: she just wants food, money, and treasure. Her exploits have earned her a reputation as a fearsome bandit killer and made her an infamous villian around the world, even though she is only 15.
Lina is probably one of the most entertaining female leads I have seen, but I wish the series had given her a bit of background; we have no idea how she became so proficient at magic, where she learned her spells, why she started killing bandits for money, and though there is a passing reference to her sister we find out nothing about her family beyond that.
In fact, lack of background is probably one of the most problematic things with this series. Goury, the airheaded swordsman, is also given a bit of background, but we never really find out why he was travelling, who he is exactly, how he became such a good swordsman, and where he is from.
As for the side characters like Zelgadus, Amelia, Phil, and Syphial: I found them all a bit annoying, though it was amusing to see the contrast between Amelia and Lina at times.
The villians were fairly silly just like the main characters (if theres one pet peeve I have it is silly and mood-ruining villians) though the ultimate villians were fairly good.
There is little character development; Lina, Goury, and the gang are the same characters at the end of the series that they are when we first meet them. There isn't even much development in the relationships between the characters, despite the time and hardships they went through.
As for the story: there were WAY too many filler-type episodes which served little purpose in advancing the main storyline. While some were amusing and interesting, most weren't as entertaining as the rest of the episodes. Also, there is fairly huge break between the first serious storyline and the beggining of the new one.
There were some interesting and surprising plot twists in the story, and the spells and items were all very original and interesting as well.
The animation was fairly mediocre; rehashed animation for most spells many times throughout the anime, especially Lina's "Fireball" spell, and Goury's sword effect. Also, the 2D backgrounds lacked detail. The fight scene effects were decent but not spectacular, though the last episode's fight was pretty exciting.
The soundtrack wasn't too great either; I didn't really notice much about it during the series and the OP/ED weren't too great. The voice actors did a good job, however, and the sound effects for the spells and action sequences were well done.
This isn't for people who want a completely serious fantasy experience (Watch 12 Kingdoms or something similar for that) this anime is more of a comedy than a fantasy. I enjoyed the anime, but I did get a bit bored during some of the non-storyline oriented episodes.
Overall, a mediocre anime that had potential but had too much filler and not enough story or character development.

| This is where it all starts, not my favorite slayers season but I like it. This is just a fun fantasy anime with humor, adventure and it does get more serioues towards the end.
I WOULD RECOMMEND slayers NEXT even if you didn't like this series because I felt slayers next is a great improvement in EVERYTHING!

| Slayers is a show about lina invers who is a "fat" girl who goes around righting wrongs.. kindof. she steals from thieves because its not really stealing if its alredy stolen is it?
anyway shes a scorceror
the story was actually pretty good, but they made it childish through the animation and through the humor, if it werent for that I think i would have liked this story a lot more.
lina is a funny character because while she is probably the greatest scorcer ever, shes still a little kid in most respects. goury (however thats spelled) is a good character. prettymuch hes just in there for the comic relif tho cause hes a dumbass.
the animation reminded me of pokemon because of how they tryed to make the enemies colorfull and the backgrounds cartoony. I dont know, for some reason i just didnt like the animation that much.
its deffinately worth watching some time. I liked it and want to watch it again.

| After Escaflowne and the twelve Kindgoms, I began Slayers in order to fulfill my looooooooong quest of fantasy animes.
Three fantasy animes, three female lead. After the annoying schoolgirl, and the quite less annoying schoolgirl, a more common character for a fantasy anime : a sorceress.
And what a sorceress ! I mean despite a very rude behavior, her way of throwing fireball (you know, when she blinks this right eye of her) and faces expressions are too much to stand. It's like they have done by mistake the dream of every anime director : the ultimate cute character.
Lina Inverse for the win I might say.
Slayers is fun, has a good story (yes! there is a slight variation on the classical "villain"...incredible but true) and various spells.
However Slayers has been written in a "parodic" mood. Some people will be (and have been) depited by poor characters treatment, but it's like in any good DD games. When someone died, you roll again the dices (it's better if they have 20 sides) and go on with the story.

| A great series with a lot of action and most of all SPELLS. If you want to have some fun watching a great sorcery genius in action you should see this. Lina Inverse, the best there is, sets on a quest for...hmm...well...food and fun mostly but manages to get in a LOT of trouble. So for unlimited fun watch Slayers...all of them !

When Slayers was released 10 years ago (7 years ago where I live) it skipped my attention. It had also horrible dubs. There were some OVAs prior to that or during the production but they were made by another studio. Hence the difference in animation and visual style with the TV serues. But only the TV series of SOFTX are the best versions of Slayers on TV and managed to get my attention.

| I had high expectations for Slayers because it's a show i've heard so much since i was, like, 12, now 7 years later i finally got it, and I can say it's really a great show !!
It's a comedy-fantasy show, and it's quite old, dating back to 1995.
There's tons of thing to like about the show, but everything boils down to one aspect : Lina Inverse, the Dragoon Spooker-Bandit Killer-enemy of all living things-sorceress !! she's a really hilarious, cheap, sharp tongued, flat-chested, glutton girl, who happens to be one of the most bad-ass magicians of her time !
Just seeing her do her stupid antics is enough to make watching the show worth it, but she's not alone ! the whole cast of Slayers is really fun and are what make you want to watch more of it.
Lina's friends include jellyfish-brained swordsman Gourry, Zelgadis and poor guy cursed with looking like a chimera, Amelia the heroine of justice on crack, and Sylphiel the sweet white magician.
The story is pretty simple, but it's actually good, so you won't be bored by it.
Music is ok, with a catchy intro-tune and standard fare BGMs.
Animation is totally unimpressive, even for 1995 standards with the expections of some of the spells and more importante fights in the show.
As you can see, Slayers would be an ok show by itself, but add the spicy Lina and Co. and you have a classic that shouldn't be missed, just because of the stupid situations and personality of all the loony main characters in the show.

| Slayers is the ultimate "fantasy" anime! You can't ask for much more, comedy, wonderful characters, pretty decent and intriguing storyline, wonderful voice acting, great theme tunes, great ending, and that all adds up to 26 episodes of pure enjoyment pleasure!

| Slayers is by far my favorite anime series. Lina Inverse is unlike any other female leads you'll find. She's bossy, loud-mouthed, flat-chested, and powerful. Team her up with a dense swordman and you got the fantasy comedy that makes the Slayers. If that's your bag then you're in for one hell of a ride.

| A quite old anime, though still quite good. In terms of production quality, for 1995, it already wasn't really spectacular. Considering the quality of anime now, presentation is really off the hook. Sound wasn't particularly interesting, as well as the story, which is simple. However, it does reach a peak towards the end of the story. Character development is poor. Overall, this is a very normal anime, there is a potential for you watch again, since the flashy magic and battles towards the end do make up for the slow beginning.

| Quite an enjoyable magical setting with a variety of monsters, magic types, sorcerers, magical items and such. It all starts out with firey Lina Inverse going around looting stuff from bandits in order to make a living. Then along the way she meets up this mercenary swordsman Gourry, who mistakes her for a little girl because of her looks. But being the person that she is, she doesn't mind his company and together they set off to the nearest city. However, one of the most recent magical items that Lina stole is the key to resurrecting the Dark Lord and both Lina and Gourry are chased after by villains of all different shapes, sizes and forms.
Essentially, this is a fantasy world adventure anime. The setting consists of medieval style villages, elemental sorcerers, dragons, castles and the like. Lina Inverse is quite the interesting character - she isn't purely energetic and annoying like many others, but she has her witty and caring side as well which makes for a more interesting watch. Gourry is quite simple minded and not too bright, but he has his down to earth and noble side as well. Together, they tough all their various challenges out just living one day after another - and eating a crazy amount of food as wel - quite the fun duo.
Storywise, things never really get too serious and dramatic. The biggest enemies are actual physical beings that are completely evil and it is a clear battle between good and evil. In other words, there is not much drama. But there are quite diverse types of both good and bad characters, which make for a more interesting viewing depsite the lack of the typical drama. The historical story background is quite basic with epic battles of God-level monsters - but nevertheless there are still various impending events that makes the current storyline more interesting including various characters that they encounter because of the journey they are on.
Overall, for an anime that doesn't really have intense character interactions or deep storylines, The Slayers is quite fun and enjoyable. It gets all the basics down well and has a lovable set of characters that makes viewing all the more fun. Although the action/magic fight scenes are a bit outdated and furthermore for some people, the lack of a deep storyline is an auto-deterrant, The Slayers does pretty well in keeping the interest level up to some level until the end.

| Yay, I really like this anime! It just has this little something that captivates you and then never lets go :) Well, maybe I exaggerated a little, but most people enjoy it.
It's just a good mix of great, great comedy, made of the real, funny humour and not something that seems to be popular lately and isn't hilarious at all, and even drama and romance, and of course lots of action! The plot is interesting and has some nice twists, and the characters are simply AWESOME! In both meanings :) But you should see for yourself, I think you won't regret!

| Yahooo! This series is insane/crazy but pack with fun times and a lot of spunky characters.
Good old adventure, fantasy, RPG never bore me. The story is not really interesting or anything but char is good. You get one 15 years old girl who pretty much the strongest blackmage in town. Then you got this stupid warrior who can forgot everything that ever happen in 3 min. Don't underestimate him thou, he got this "Ultra-Cool" sword of light to chopp bad guy to pieces. 2 Chars start off the show, then more ppl join in. BUT WAIT! it's not like other RPG where all people just join in the first 3 ep. then they all go have together THIS IS DIFFERENT! Char spread out through the series very well, not too crown and not too stupid. You know like other anime you have to work team work and combine shit. This is not like that. Character is still in early stage to combine power and shit(you see it coming at very end), althou there's touching moments from time to time. The way they put scenes together is kinda weird and annoy me a bit. They made like the ep. gonna end, but it just end of the chapter(like on tv for commercial) then fade in/out and story goes on. I mistake a couple times thinking the ep. already end and go the next ep. and like "WTF" so i go back and found out I was missing the later-half of ep.
Anyway, it was a fun series I laugh it so many times and I'm on my way to getting Slayer try/next and the rest of the ova. Hope it doesn't dissapoint me

| As a fantasy nut I loved this so much and as such I found it to be more funny than my non-fantasy fan counterparts.
The characters were hilarious from the super greedy Lina to the Pacifist Prince Phil everyone was loveable. Each one has his or her own quirky qualities that you just can't bring yourself to hate. Almost all tradtional character classes are present, sorcerer, swordsman, cleric, and paladin.
The music was good, but not classic. Did that ruin the experience, no, but it could have been a little more traditional. Again no real complaints.
The story was not terribly great since you have them fighting the same villian twice. Despite this the fillers were great since almost all were packed with laughs. The most memeorable one for me were Prince Phil's oxymoronic attacks like "Pacifist Crush" and "Love Thy Fellow Man Kick."
Slayers is an excellent intorductory anime and even if this is not your first it is still worth watching. Very much entrecnhed in Fantasty and Comedy, and even if one is not predisposed to fantasy it is funny enough to mak a great watch.
-Comedy is an art form that has been with humanity since ancient times. Those who hate it see a genre that is strong and despise it as crude.

| The Slayers is a nice introduction into a fairly good anime. This series shows how Lina and Gourry meet as well as presents part of why Lina became so notorious. This series turned out much better then I expected in all facets and is a good comedy/fantasy show. If you want to know more read my review.

| Slayers has many features speaking for itself. Characters first, they are fun as hell. I just loved how Lina and Gourry played it together. They're personalities are not standard either for world savers, Lina being greedy and Gourry being stupid. They would have been enough but instead a whole bunch of other characters funny as them appear through the series. Thank you.
The second great thing is the humor. Genuinely funny, it is mostly based on character interactions and clever one-liners. It really made every episode easy to watch and enjoyable.
The third good thing is the fantasy world. I just love it. Dragons, golems, monsters, sorcerers, it just has every fantasy cliche there is. Because the series is so fun otherwise, this is not a problem but makes everything even funner.
The only bad side is the story. It is only something to support all the fun. Rather repetitive too as the same story is played twice during the series.
Despite the story being weak enough to deter me watching the series again, I think Slayers is a must-watch to any fantasy enthusiast, especially if one doesn't take everything seriously.

| One of the funniest animes i've ever seen. The characters are extremely well developed, and have great personalities. Also, this anime manages to keep a good story coherently, despite the humor, a feat rarely achieved by animes.

| This anime is a jack of all trades.
It has comedy thats actually funny (no fan service), a two part story that is actually pretty interesting (though the 2nd half is better), some really unique characters and action scenes that can be pretty tense and is always entertaining.
Animation was pretty bad at the first 9 eps but gets considerably better. The opening/ending songs were great but all the background music and special effects werent really anything exceptional. Even though most of the characters lack in development they are so original and are quite funny in their own ways.

| This was one of the first animes that I really liked. Slayers has humour, but can still feel serious at times with good action despite the basic animation and drawing quality & style, which I personally liked.
The characters are really good - Lina Inverse and Zelgadis are probably two of my favourite anime characters, and the other characters also have their quirks and personalities. Both the English and Japanese voices are very good, apart from the occasional dodgy English voice acting for some minor (one-scene) characters. Also, I actually quite liked the music for each Slayers series, despite not being much of a fan of that J-Pop stuff.
A lot of people might say that the storyline is cliched. but I think they did very well considered how the whole fantasy genre is like; it's practically impossible to make something totally lack cliched elements and still keep it recognisable as D&D-style fantasy, which I am a great fan of.
All-in-all, this is an essential series for people who like both D&D-style fantasy and anime. I also highly recommend Slayers to any anime fan.
