| i gotta say i wasnt expecting anything good from this anime at all. it was very surprising. i was expecting the show to be one of those anime that is pure fan service with no substance. i was quite wrong.
i dont know why i have always been a fan of old school animation, especially the kind used in TERRA (which is the best anime of 2007). 0091 uses the old school style to the fullest just like they did in giant robo. i liked it alot, it fits the time in which the story takes place too. its like a futuristic past in which the cold war is still going on.
the soundtrack i loved because my favorite genre of music is jazz... and all the music here is all jazz baby. and the dub was very well done. nothing is held back and nothing is lost in translation.
the weakest point of this anime is in the story. each episode focuses on a specific case or mystery. which i believe was also the weak point of mushishi In my own opinion. however what really blew my mind was the dvd only episode called rhythm and blues and i have to say it is one of the best episodes i`ve seen all year. this episode was about how we find love where we least expect it, and how frail it is. when we find it we are swept up in the moment and we have to treasure those moments, because as soon as it comes, it can also be lost as easily. the episode was beautiful and painful.
in regards to character, it was very different because each episode gives us insight on who mylene really is, and sometimes we cant tell if she`s a good person, or just a cold hearted bitch to the core. but that is what makes it interesting. we are forced to contemplate on out preconceptions on what makes a person good or evil.
i enjoyed the anime quite alot, and i have to say it has some of the best music i have heard all year. and the action scenes were quite spectacular.
i told myself i would only write reviews about shows i absolutely fell in love with, shows that rate a 9 or higher, but now im compelled to put some of my word out there when im done with a series.

| A nice agent series with the unique premise of a neverending cold war. Based on some very old manga, it looks different from all the other anime of the day, but surprisingly feels fresh and interesting. It tells about a female agent called Mylene who is a killer cyborg. If there were a bit more action scenes it would be perfect, but it's very good never the less and gets even better near the end. It's a pity how short the series is, only thirteen episodes, there should be a sequel.
The Good:
+ Great animation with fluid movements and sharp contrasts.
+ Mylene has a very interesting background and personality, plus strong character development throughout the series.
+ Good music that fits the setting well.
+ The final storyline is very good.
+ Fight scenes, few as they are, look amazing.
+ Sexy chicks, all the female character designs are very nice.
The Bad:
- Some of the early episodes are a bit weak, too much time wasted on character development at the cost of a storyline.
- There should be more action overall.
- Too short.
The Ugly:
- The designs of most male characters are, indeed, ugly.

| Ooh baby! Did I ever fall in love with an anime character. Mylene has got to be the prettiest, smartest and hottest anime heroine ever! She may have a cybernetic body and guns for tits, but she's also a living breathing young girl in a world of lies and evil secrets. She's a very multidimensional character, who can be confident or unsure, lustful or cold, and strong or vulnerable depending on the situation. Many of her reactions are acted and fake, due to her job as a spy, but deep down she's a little lost girl who's trying to find her place and purpose.
As another reviewer pointed out, the anime is all about her. But it doesn't mean the rest is bad, though. The storylines are exciting. The artstyle is original. The fights look impressive. The music and sounds are great. Even all the other characters are very well developed. This anime would be a solid 9 well without Mylene.
But with her as the main character, this anime is perfect! Sexy retro sci-fi spy action anime starring a wonderful lady!

| Ah, the good old times when hip super-agents sneaked in the shadows of the Cold War and anime characters looked just as cheesy as they were. 009-1 is a tribute to those times, aimed at us who still remember such TV-classics as The Avengers and Danger Man or early anime by Tezuka & co. And a magnificent tribute it is, oozing 60s spy-charm and dry humour aplenty!
Who cares if the plotlines are absurd or if the villains are cheesier than the French cuisine, as long as there's this much sense and style to it all! Starring a sexy cyborg agent with big guns and an extravagant wardrobe, 009-1 is the paragon of 'guilty pleasure', filled with skimpy clothing, bloody deaths and abundant nudity. This is the kind of series you'd rather show to your old uncle than your little kids.
And yet the series has more than just sex and violence going for it. There's a variety of moral questions, eerily reminiscent of today's existing military-political dilemmas (how far can a government go to protect its citizens?), plus the main heroine's mental issues about hurting people as part of her job. There's also that brooding atmosphere of living under the threat of a nuclear holocaust, forgotten by most of us living today. And above all, there's that odd mixture of psychedelic 60s fashion design and 21st Century visual treatment.
There is a delicate camp element to it all, but unlike most campy Japanese films, it's not that tasteless or all over the place. In fact, this is very much a series that could've been done in the good old US of A in the late 60s, sans the shiny animation. Of course, they would've downplayed the sexual aspects and replaced the grayscale moral ambiquity with a simple black-and-white 'west bloc good, east bloc bad' triteness, but the fundamental qualities of 009-1 are akin to the American / British 'spy-fi' series of the era.
There's no reason to go into detail over the storylines, for they are, despite a few smart moments, only excuses to present our heroine in numerous different settings. The show relies fully on her character - her peculiar style, her snappy personality and her lascivious body. As long as she's in the focus, the series entertains tremendously.
Alas, the series does a major disservice to itself by relegating her to a post of a passive observer in a few early episodes. I wouldn't be surprised if those stories bored most of the viewers to death and made them quit watching 009-1 after the first disc. However, those who stick with the series shall be rewarded, as towards the end of its run 009-1 becomes more coherent, climaxing on a surprisingly strong three-parter that leaves many wishing for more.
Perchance not a masterpiece of any kind, yet 009-1 has certainly enough going for it to please a select audience of older fans who can appreciate its merits without prejudice. The DVD release is more than solid, which is unexpected for such a marginal series. In the age of disgusting lolicon-series and endless shonen-clones, it feels refreshing to find an anime that borrows its influences from somewhere else - indeed, from a different era of TV-entertainment altogether.
If you want another Naruto-esque shonen-series or some moe-loli-fun, don't come near this. But if you're looking for an old-school 'spy-fi' anime for adults, you can't go wrong with 009-1. It's better than LSD, that's for sure!

| 009-1 is the story of Mylene Hoffman, a secret agent in a world where the cold war didn't end in 1990, but has kept going for over 150 years. She is the top agent in the 009 division, lead by a man named Zero. The stories show how she goes around, and begins to doubt that she is on the right side.

| I didn't like 009-1 much. Don't get me wrong, I think its a good series in a way, but its just not my type. So I try to be objective here. My first review wasn't too good, so I'll try to do better than that here.
Firstly, I didn't like the way the characters were drawn. Everything else was so well animated, colors, costumes, moves, etc. But almost all the male characters looked so ugly to my eyes. I suppose you could say they looked that way for a purpose, to make the series more unique, and I give them that, but I just didn't like it. Although some of them looked so stupid it was funny.
What's more, I didn't like how casually the main character had sex with strangers or killed them. I think she was a bit too coldhearted sometimes, although she could be very kind to children and the like. My boyfriend liked her, but that's probably just because of her boobs, hah! I didn't mind her 'guns' a lot, only rolled my eyes a couple of times. At first I thought they'd show her shooting with her boobs all the time, but it was good they didn't go that route.
I must admit some of the stories I liked, because they showed a lot of normal people and their worries, not just these agents and mad scientists and the like. I suppose you could say there was a very human side to the series, even though it was sometimes quite dark and evil. That was nice. I also liked how they didn't try to stretch the series too long, but stopped when they had told enough.
The musics were all good, the OP was great even. I can't say much about the acting, but I gues it was good. I think the musics were the best part of the series for me. I might even buy the soundtrack.
So overall the series wasn't that bad, but somehow I just didn't like it much. I gues it was made more for men with all the sex and fights and stuff like that. I liked some of the romantic moments, but there were too few of them. I think 009-1 is too dark and sad for me as a girl. I might rewatch some episodes, like the extra episode (why's it called that?) because its the most romantic, but I don't think I'll want to watch the whole series again.
So, if you are male and like sexy agent girls who can kill without emotion, I could recommend this series to you. But if you are a girl like me who wants to see happy stories about pretty boys, then don't watch this, its not for you.

| hehe, this is a fun little series. or i dont know if its that fun really, but for sure its good, much better than what i thought. you know, theres this sexy spy woman who kills enemies with the guns hidden in her freakin tits!! i mean can you get any more stupid than that??? well thats what i thought first.
but in all actuality she doesnt even use those titguns that often, like only in a couple episodes. most of the times she just kicks them to the face or shoots them to the head with her pistol. so its not really as stupid as what you might think if you only saw the trailer.
moreover theres alot of other things going on in this series, like politics and robots and mutants and whatnot. so its like many other great anime in a way in that it has these plots and stories telling about different things so its not always just the same things over and over(like dragon ball z and other kid stuff)
oh bytheway that reminded me...
WARNING: this series is not for kids! theres some sex and bloody violense(people getting shot to pieces and so on)
you know this spy woman goes and has sex with her enemies to get some information and then kills them later. but shes really a good person whos just doing her work and she someties feels bad for what she does. shes supposed to be on the good side, but they kind of keep screwing her up with those kind of missions. i think the whole point of the series is that even the good guys must do some pretty evil stuff sometimes. or perhaps not, i dunno.
anyways this is a great series that not much people have seen. if you like this kind of spy stuff for grownups then you should check this out for sure.

| (Update: Finalised the review)
Sophisticated, atmospheric and erotic show about intelligence agents.
When I ordered the first DVD I was expecting fast-paced action and simple Cold War spy stories with possibly some nice fan-service as a bonus. I got all that - and a lot more: there's plenty of atmospheric scenes to balance the bloody action, the stories have surprisingly mature political and moral aspects to them, and most of the time the fan-service is done very tastefully, almost eloquently. Which is quite an achievement.
The series has an outstanding audiovisual style that takes a while to get used to, but once you see beoynd the simplistic designs you start to appreciate how well that style fits the retro-futuristic mood of the series. The world of 009-1 is a dark and violent place, where the borders of good and evil are easily blurred, and a pretty face may hide a deadly intent. I'm usually not a big fan of vintage character designs, so I was surprised by how much I liked the look and feel of this series.
What surprised me the most, however, was how well the conventional, almost simplistic, storylines were executed. Largely thanks to the excellent cinematography, the episodes flow at a very natural pace, allowing even the most traditional plot-devices to feel clever and fitting. The majority of the episodes are independent from each other and could be seen in any order. This episodic nature would usually bother me a lot, but here it is just a minor annoyance.
In the end, it is very difficult to be objective when reviewing a series like 009-1. It is certainly not a perfect series (well, none really is), and despite all its qualities, it still offers mainly just basic entertainment, nothing more. Yet, it just happens to have that rare "vibe", which puts it so much above all the similar series that I might call 009-1 a masterpiece within its limited genre.

| I could sum this series up as: "Looks can be deceiving."
When I first saw the artwork, I was like WTF! How old is this series? I really hate all old anime and can't stand ugly characters, so I was immediately turned off. Anyways, as I had already started the first episode, I just watched it to the end. And to my surprise, I started really liking it!
The animation isn't really bad at all, actually it is GREAT. The moves and colors and everything look so good and the fights are great. The characters may look like they are from some stupid 80s show, but once I got used to them, they started looking great in my eyes, especially the girls who are all real beauties! They are secret agents who are ready to do anything to get their job done.
There's a lot of very sexy shots in this series, so it does not suit children, but they are not overdoing it like in some ecchi series like Agent Aika or Najica or whatever. Actually, this series is like those series MADE RIGHT without too many pantyshots, but still enough sexy girls that it is nice to watch.
As I said, looks can be deceiving, and so are these girls. They are very pretty, but they are also very smart and know how to fight and how to use all these gadgets and secret weapons they have. So this is quite a bit of "girl power" anime. I would say a bit like Charlie's Angels, but I didn't really like Charlie's Angels and I still love 009-1. The characters here are just much more interesting. They have very sexy voices as well, very well acted by the seiyuus.
There's a lot of other characters and they are also interesting, but I concentrated only on the girls. The plots are all great and very different from each other, they have all these different missions and everything can happen in them, I won't spoil them here though. I just say there are a lot of surprises and very fast fights, no endless talking and standing when you are supposed to fight here.
I know all tens reviews suck and I didn't want my first review to be one of those, but with everything so great in this series I have to give everything a 10. This series taught me that old looking doesn't always mean = ugly. Once you get used to it, you can see that the animation is some of the best ever. The musics are also great, and all the voices fit the characters very well. The stories are great and if I had the money I would buy this series on DVD so I could enjoy it always.
So all tens for my girls! I hope they make more of this series. I read in the other review that there's an extra episode, but sadly it hasn't been fansubbed. Someone told me the fansubs for this series aren't very good, like they have some translations wrong and such, but I don't speak any Japanese so it was all good to me.

| An excellent futuristic spy-action series. Super-sexy cybernetic female agents who make James Bond look like an amateur fight against the agents of the Eastern Bloc. 009-1 takes the best parts of Ghost in the Shell and Lupin III with a hint of Noir, but leaves out the boring parts of GitS and the crappy animation of Lupin.
There's a lot of brutal action as the girls of Western Bloc's elite "Zero Zero" intelligence organization take care of their enemies. Music is by Taku Iwasaki, who also did the musics for Kenshin OVA and ROD TV.
009-1 is easily the best new series of 2006/2007. Too bad it is not easily available on fansub, but luckily ADV Films are about to release the series on DVD in the US, see the official site here: www.009-1tv.com
There are 12 episodes for the series, plus one extra episode released on DVD only in Japan (to be included on ADV's 3rd and last DVD also).
