This anime is about the trials and travails of Kenichi, a weakling who through a series of events end up at the Rozanpaku dojo, where some of the mightiest masters of martials arts gather. He enrolls, wanting to become stronger, but soon find out that he's gotten alot more than he bargained for, as his new masters are not only the best, they're also rather... eccentric :P

This is one of the series that I've watched from beginning to end in one almost continous go. Ep after ep, i had to come back for more. Watching Kenichi improve in his martial arts was cool, but the real draw for me was the completely hilarious humour contrasted with the downright serious. The anime switches between these moods with precision, surprising you, and making you always want to come back for more. Sound and music fit well with most of the show, too. The story, however, is rather weak with a standard set of bad guy challenges that Kenichi needs to fight, however the strong characterization compensates for it. You cant help but feel for the main cast and even some of the bad guys, and thats a big plus. Even the "malicious" Neijima, with his demon ears and snake tounge, is actually really likable after a few eps, and in my eyes he's definitely one of the main attractions of this show.

The main villian, however, was a dissapointment. It could have been done alot better, but all we see of him is the usual glowing glasses evildoer whos disillusioned view of reality seems to be based on pure nonsense. The most fitting words i wanted to tell him once the exposition was out was, to put it in words of Luffy from One piece, "ahou ka" (you an idiot?).
I wont spoil it for you though, so lets summarize the anime on its own merits.
The story is bland, but the characters mostly excellent. The humour and gags are top notch. Overall, i really enjoyed this series and i would recommend it to anyone who either loves fighting animes or comedies. The show definitely shares some similarities in the aforementioned humour vs seriousness contrast with One Piece, so if you like that one you'll probably enjoy this one as well.

Shijo Saikyo no Deshi Kenichi/Kenichi the Mightiest Disciple. Kenichi starts off as a boy who can barely stand on two legs (given the nickname "weak legs"), but all things change the day he meets Miu Furinji and the rest of the dojo. From there he's given many choices and chances to fight, learn and grow or to run away. Strength is not always in the fist, but in the power of the heart.

Note: This review is based on umai-Doremi and Kuro-Hana subs, both of which possess average quality without wide-screen support and below-average translation. However, since I don't see anyone else doing this show you have little to choose from.

Quote:
It seems that indeed all of my attacks are useless... Then how about someone else's attacks? The traditions of all martial arts start with imitation!

Originally created as manga by Matsuena Shun and directed by Kamegaki Hajime (Naruto Shippuuden Movie, Air Gear) History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi is your everyday martial arts inspired shounen which follows the life of a complete wimp Kenichi who decides to take up martial arts to protect himself and his friends from the bullies. He gets accepted into a dojo where six different martial art experts live in and then, well, you know the drill, hard work, determination and lots of butt-kicking. I must say that the first impression this show leaves is simply horrendous. Broken production values accompanied by some of the most annoying character archetypes and plot which revolves around beating some sort of school bullies. Well, thankfully the show gets better the further it goes as the scale moves from school bullies to street gangs which conveniently rank their members by their power levels and give them exaggerated names from Norse mythology. But hell, though it's stupid, it's still quite cool to see the wimpy guy have showdowns with martial arts geniuses who call themselves Odin or Loki. Anyway, the main point of why this show is above the quality of floor-cleaning rags is that it actually presents an interesting idea of main character learning six different martial art types at the same time and though it never uses its full potential, it manages to implement it quite well in some of the climatic fights. It's not a good show, but it's fun, sometimes.

Conclusion: Suitable for anyone 13 years old or older History's Strongest Disciple Kenichi is your everyday stereotypical shounen show with few redeeming factors. I recommend not touching it unless you are a big fan of the genre and have already stormed through the truly good shows which include Rurouni Kenshin TV, Hunter x Hunter and Scryed. As a matter of fact I even find Naruto, Bleach and One Piece better than this show, even though I myself am not a big fan of them.

I was very interested in this concept initially, being a martial artist myself. I thought we could finally see an anime with realistic stuff instead of Ki Blasts.

Initially, I was very, very disappointed, but at the end of the pilot, I was bored and something urged me on.

Despite the fact I watched the first half of the season shaking my head and criticizing it, it aws very addictive and enjoyable nonetheless.

The second half of the series took a great turn for the better. It turned even more addictive, and there was less stuff I could be critical on, except that the original concept of realistic fighting seemed to be moving into a more typical form.

The 'comedy' side of this anime wasn't very funny in the first half in my opinion...being typical slapstick style, but the second half was hilarious at times. I haven't laughed that hard for a while.

Enjoyable, addictive, but not very serious. Worth watching nonetheless...but not amazing.

Moving right along, Kenichi and his training! I say this in earnest, because really, that`s all there is in this show. Training and fights. And some very slight ecchi. And parody, sattire, and plain comedy. Wow, wait. We`ve got all those out of a shounen/action/martial arts anime?! Wait.. he didn`t mention a tournament?! That`s right folks. I was rather surprised and hooked myself, but History`s Strongest Diciple Kenichi manages to sate all those shounen cravings, and still remain satisfying in terms of structure, character development, and plot.

Kenichi starts off a weak, pathetic little thing that is picked on by everyone. We don`t see any of his moral values at first -- infact, we don`t see anything! But then.. he`s challenged to a Karate fight by some punk (a big one). What can he do? Please remember.. the characters don`t know how to say "no" in a action/martial arts genre. This remains a constant. If someone challenges a nerd to a fight, the nerd must agree. So, Kenichi, of course, is feeling a little down, because he is going to be murdered by the end of the week. This is where Miu comes in. Miu just happens to be this babe (why, WHY, must they always be babes?) who decides to help Kenichi out. Why? Well... I don`t want to spoil anything.

In anycase, Kenichi gets introduced to the dojo of Ryozampaku, the craziest, scariest, and most unrealistic dojo there is. There he endures harsh training (highly comedic, as well), and scary teachers in order to become stronger. All for the sake of.. -- (it`s a shonen, remember) -- you guessed it! Protecting those close to him.

I guess I`ve babbled on enough. To all those faint of heart, and those who really are doubtful.. let me tell you here. Watch it. If you don`t like it at the end, you can send me hate mail, and add bad comments, and swear at me online. These will be ignored, but feel free to do it anyway. However, I almost guarantee that you`ll like this anime.

my personal favorite

Animation - is really good especially when you consider consistency and the reflection of the character development. The physical changes experienced by the main character are clearly reflected in the design changes (i.e. muscles). However, while the animation itself is good, the picture quality could be better (it could be at least widescreen, not to mention HD). (If it is just the release problem, I will edit this review)

Sound - The voice cast is impeccable as is the music (which is used to reflect on what is happening on the screen), but the sound effects can be slightly oversimplified.

Story - One of the best aspects of this anime is the story. Specifically - the story progression. Unlike some other action animes (*ahem*Naruto*ahem*) the fights last no more than 2 episodes (normally just one) and the story doesn`t take months to progress. Although there is one big story arc ("Ragnarok") that is there from start to finish the internal minor arcs give you satisfaction and resolution that in some other animes you have to for months (Naruto, BLEACH come to mind). The ending does leave way for another season and leaves you with a sense that not all the stories have been told. (The manga is still ongoing if anyone is interested.)

Characters For an action anime the characters are quite unique as it draws on the usual clichés but with refreshing changes. For starters the main character (Kenichi) is not an orphan but rather a part of a fully functional nuclear family while his love interest (Miu) is in fact much more powerful than him and tends to treat him... well... not as a guy that`s for sure! The supporting cast are there for a reason, especially the masters who switch from insightful to just plain weird within moments. Oh, yeah, and how about this for a change: Kenichi is neither stupid (Naruto) nor stubborn and impulsive to the point of stupidity (Ichigo from BLEACH)! He actually behaves like a sane person most of the time...

Value - I truly believe that with slightly better sound effects for the fighting scenes and better picture quality this would be the best action/martial arts anime out there.

Enjoyment - I am big fan of action and martial arts and this anime for me was a joy to watch. I really hope that they continue the story with a second season in a year or two. I sure as hell will be there to watch it. This is one great show.

A nice anime, although somewhat typical, it made you generally feel good the whole way through. I also like how it, for the most part, avoided "ki" clashes, and stuck to well animated, fast moving, rather realistic fighting. There were many good characters, and I didn't really dislike any of them.

My sister watches this but sometimes I give a glance or two. I never really liked it and I actually dislike it. First, Miu: Her boobs are way too unnatural and given that cleave in the middle. It makes it look like bouncing balls that I can punch out of her. She really looks like a dairy cow, no kiddin'. Second, Kenichi is sexist and never wanted to seriously fight Kisara. That really bothered me because just because their gender is different, should you consider everything based on it? And I mean, she wanted to fight, why not do that? It's nice and polite, whatever to not hit girls, but I think that shouldn't be applied to situations like that. Irritating and annoying. Third; his hair (and other characters that have the same hair as him) , it goes horizontal in the back and down in the front. Noooot so fond of that....

I would like to see Miu fight more, and Kenichi stop ******** for her to run away or flee or stand back. I'm sure she's capable of handling these if she's stronger than him.

PS: A girl's boobs bigger than her face? Not something you could find in real life... In fact, it's so big, I don't even know how she can even fight. Could she handle that much fat on her body?

i really liked this anime cuz the characters are little more original than your usual martial art anime. The comedy part was not bad at all, had some original lines/actions on that part. Kenichi had some funky sound tracks but not much you gonna pay attention to.

Based on 21 episodes.

Kenichi is a rather common anime, it's so common and cliché that some can find it boring. It's a retelling of the story of an underdog going strong!

However I find Kenichi very fun to watch

Unlike other underdogs, he is not a "unpolished diamond", he goes thru several training and hell.

However, he has only lost 1 fight on 21 episodes so...

Main gripe with this one it's he lack of fights, and the excesive ammount of fanservice. Miu, the main girl, has really really really really big bouncy boobs everywhere showing them on every chapter.

Animation: Nothing special, but consistent
Sound: Nothing special, does the job
Story: The same underdog story
Character: Bunch of cliché characters and Hokuto no Ken ripoffs
Value: At least it has been fun

I really hate martial arts based fighting anime that is created by people with only as much knowledge about martial arts as a 60's kung fu movie. I mean you can tell by the animation itself. I'm not really sure what kind of techniques these characters use, but it's not martial arts because in many cases, it's not physically possible.

It's a really bland anime with that aside, racked with fanservice, and cliche, character-less heroes and villains. Heck...Even Tenjou Tenge is better. It at least has a slightly more fantastical atmosphere and doesn't try to claim any truths about martial arts.

A fundamental flaw with anime like Kenichi is this: it tries to claim truths about martial arts (which it fails at, in both the philsophical and physical elements) but because the creators actually know nothing, they come up with "duh" fundamentals like "You have to step in before the punch gets too close! That's the secret!" But anyone who's seen a boxing match would know just how difficult that is, and the "secret" would really be how one would go about doing that. These physical, along with some of the more philosophical aspects of martial arts (i.e. why it was created) that is elaborated on in the anime are either over dramatized even though they're completely common sense, or in some cases, they're downright wrong.

Tenjou Tenge is bad, yes, but I can forgive it because it doesn't have that pretentious lecturing tone that's often taken in Kenichi. Kenichi has jokes it tries to pass off as humor, crazy physically impossible moves (sometimes), D rate kung fu movie type training sequences, yet it still tries to pass knowledge about martial arts on to its viewers? That's pretentious and stupid at the same time.

For those interested in martial arts anime, it's really hard for me to recommend something, but if anything, I'd say IGPX captures more of the drama and excitement of martial arts than any other TV series i've seen.

to make it short ,this anime is very very simple. a weak guy who is bullied many times at school joins a dojo and becomes stronger. soon there are many delinquents who want to take revenge or just want to beat him up. but kenichi puts on the things he learned thorugh his inhuman training and saves the day.
anyone who compares this to hajime no ippo should just die. the humour is pretty much the same but the rest is far away from being similar.
historys strongest disciple kenichi has far too many characters and it reminds me of eyeshield 21 which has the same atmosphere around it. up till now you dont really know why they all live together in the dojo and why they dont have families like normal people their age. and i cant stand their dumb talk about how a man should be. woman shouldnt do this and that and men should do this and that. when some little girl is insanely strong by herself why should you risk you own health for her. my overall impression is that kenichi is a childish, simple and transparent anime. there is nothin yyou dont expect but still i enjoy it it somehow because io have an easy time watching it. the op and ed are nothing special, just forget about it.

This series is fun to watch. Period. If you want something deep, psychological, emotional, etc. then this ain't for you.

It is comical and dumb too, but both aspects combine into a hilarious anime with very good action scenes if I may be honest.

If you wanna know what this series is about, think of Karate Kid (weak bullied kid learns martial arts) with pretty cool, wise, and hilarious masters and with a rather serious approach to martial arts. After all that, add one of the funniest main characters for this role.

It's nice for good laughs, it contains very good action scenes (despite its poor animation), and it is meant to entertain, not stir up emotions or win an oscar.

So far this review is based on up to 9 episodes.

At first, when I saw the title, it gave me some goosebump. Anyway, due to a twist of fate, I got my hands on it and it ended with me wanting more of it. I even went to check out the manga abit.

The anime is way different from the manga version in terms of the sequence of events. So far, the anime version adopts a more believeable flow to its events.

The anime shows us a wimpy boy who is true to his character in every way. So one day, we see the turning point of his life as he is introduced to a dojo. Then, he got determined to change for the better. But, his lifelong wimpiness (includes physically weak and lack of confidence) isnt going to just disappear like that.

The training processes are funny to watch. But, the real gem in it are the values and concepts about martial arts that are brought up. But to avoid disappointment, I must say that these values being brought up arent rocket science but more of common sense or a certain reality associated to martial arts.

The storyline runs pretty much along the same vein as Hajime no Ippo judging from the first 6 episodes. You start out with a weak main character with latent abilities that filter in as he trains and gets stronger. His overall motivation is to strive to become stronger in order to protect those he cares about, and also the weak. Its a humorous conglomeration of action and decent animation. I was a huge fan of Ippo, and I can already say that I love this anime so far as well. So for those of you that enjoy fighting anime, this is a definite must-see.

kenichi is pretty much the usual. a weak guy is forced to fight with more muscular people but through hard work he beats him in the end.

the story begins with kenichi coming to late to school and meeting a girl named furinji miu. they decide to become friends all of a sudden. on his way home kenichi meets miu again but she is in a harsh situation. some bad guys beat up an old man and she defends him. kenichi puts all his courage together and fights for her but he is too weak and now miu shows her real ability. she kicks the asses of the bad guys and takes kenichi to her dojo. now the different characters are introduced. they all train in the dojo. there is kick boxer, a jijutsu fighter, a sword fighter and so on. from now on kenichi trains in the dojo to become a strong man.

to me the story has no suprises till now. sometimes it is a bit funny but i never really laughed. the characters are drawn in shaman king style what means pretty poor.

i hopethat this anime will show the different backgrounds of the dojo members, otherwise it will be just superficial stuff without worth.
