| D. Gray-Man has been reviewed a lot of times also it gets a lot of media attention so I'm just gonna try to make this a short review. D. Gray-man is a great anime for all ages whether it's the Pokemon tykes or the more hardcore otaku, this show will entertain you on some level. I would say that this show is on the same level as Naruto or FullMetal Alchemist. I'm assuming there's gonna be a sequel, otherwise the ending leaves much to be desired.
The animation is also on the same level as Naruto or FMA, it is very good in some parts with a lot of attention to the graphics and special effects. Other times it's average or it gets simple [only when they get humorous, though]. There is no breath-taking scenery or anything, it's shounen anime so it's more action based; expect characters with cool weapons, freaky looking monsters, a lot of light shows and big explosions.
I watched the Japanese version created from a mixed bag of fansub groups, which was OK for the most part though some of the dialog appeared kinda cheeky and I'm not sure that those words were the true meaning behind the Japanese audio. But I'm still grateful for any work that a fansubber does. The soundtrack is also a mixed bag of goodies and not so goodies. I especially liked the last ED theme song because she hit that freaky, high-pitched Mariah Carey note, that was cool. The OST is worth getting because it has Pop, Rock, Techno and Rap.
Solid story though I do have issues with the ending...also it does drag on in some areas with some battles spanning a few episodes. This is typical of shounen anime so I should have expected as much but if you are new to shounen anime then it might annoy you and you just want the plot to move along. Even so it's still a great show worth watching because if you liked Naruto or FullMetal Alchemist then you are going to like this show! It's like Naruto because the exorcists are like the ninjas from Naruto, each has their own brand of majic skills, that the fights last a few episodes. It's like FMA because it is an epic adventure quest; FMA was looking for the Sorcerer's Stone and these guys are looking for a similar artifact. Plus the Noah people are very similar to the Homunculi from FMA. All three shows are very similar in the fact that they are a perfect mix of action, adventure and humor.
Lots and lots of characters! About 7 - 10 key characters and then there's an endless list of supporting characters: good guys, bad guys and bystanders. I will say this though, for all their globe-trotting and border-hopping and meeting new faces....you never see a brown face or a black face, not even Allen's childhood friend who was supposedly “Indian.” you did get to see that “token” Asian face but that's about it. So that to me was kind of a set back, I will take off a point or two. If it wasn't for Lavi, I might have scored lower but Lavi is by far the best guy in the series [IMHO]! He's cute, he's funny, optimistic and a major risk-taker....he gets major points in my book. But if Lavi's not your guy there are PLENTY of bishounen to choose from. Allen and Kanda are also very cute and therefore makes this show fun to watch for those who are into bishounen.
So yeah, may be a long show but it's definitely worth watching! You don't have to worry about it losing steam like so many of these long-ass, never-ending anime shows [i.e. InuYasha...anyone?]

| This is definitely one of the best animes I have ever seen and if you have not seen this I highly recommend it. But then again this is one of those animes that you would either love or hate.
At first the anime seemed like a copy of full metal alchemist mainly because of the main character but this is very inaccurate because this anime does have its own unique story to it.

| I didn't really think of this series being a Fullmetal Alchemist clone until I came read a few reviews, to be honest. And I wouldn't think that it is, it's just that the main character does bear a lot of similarities to Edward Elric.
But I digress. To be honest, this isn't a very bad series. It's a change of pace from the usual grind, but then again, that change of pace is probably what's getting to me at the moment. Fourty Episodes in and I can't think of a single extremely impressionable episode that I have marvelled at. The music is subpar, the characters seem extremely cookie cutter, and it feels like all the towns look the same!
However, the story seems to be the only saving grace of this, and I must say that it certainly seems interesting. But only at this point. I have to say that my favourite character is the Earl, however, he is also my most hated character. I would love it if his motives or his character would be more carefully explored, however at this point of time all of the enemies, Earl included, are either cannon fodder, or incredibly powerful, sadistic, and, one dimensional.
Makes no sense! This has so much potential, yet it feels like it's going to end up pretty bad unless something radical happens.
Also. If this is 18th century Europe... why the hell is there LCD displays, and .... robots. Oh, I give up.

| This is one of my favourite anime. So far I have watched 35 episodes, and I look forward to more. I cannot compare it to any other Anime in terms of plot or characters.
The plot description on animenfo.com describes the premise - that akuma (Japanese for devils/demons) are being created by an arch henchman of humanity. An order of powerful excorcists fight. The main character is Alan Walker, a young excorcist.
Most episodes involve fighting the Earl's latest plots and goons. The story unfolds and new characters are introduced.
I liked many things. The anime holds a nice balance between dark moments, light interludes, characterization, story progression. The dialogue doesn't have a scripted feel to it. The characters are original and interesting - Alan is an strong but unique hero; the earl and his goons, especially Camelot, are curious subjects.
I do not want to include spoilers. I will leave it that the creators of this anime made a masterpiece.
-- two other reviews mentioned a comparison to full metal alchemist, but I am not sure why; it does not seem similar to me.

| my first impression was that d-gray-man is a good copy of full metal alchemist. everything seems similar and also familiar. it does not take much time to feel comfortable in the story because you think ou have already seen it. sounds bad but i thought it is a good thing. if the story would have followed the good beginning i could have recommended this anime to all of you. but now i have to tell you stay away from this. d-gray-man is like naruto fillers. you want to see how it goes on because there is a very good main story but its getting boring after the 5th or 6th filler. i will probably go on watching it because i want to see if there will be some developement but right now i wouldnt tell someone to start watching this.

| This Review is based upon the first 13 episodes, which is all that I have found fansubbed so far.
While this anime has a great premise and much potential (a mysterious main character with even more mysterious abilities fighting demons which are working at the hands of a mysterious "Millenium Earl") it seems to have devolved into a kid's show in the vein of Yu-Gi-Oh and shows of that ilk which play on Sunday mornings.
The setting of this story is in the late 19th century of Britain. The story is compelling: a battle between good (the Dark Order and its' exorcists, including the main character) and evil ( The Millenium Earl and his demons) over the control of the mysterious force of "Innocence". Each of the Dark Order's exorcists has a different ability and work to collect the fragments of Innocence before the Millenium Earl does. Also, the mysterious past of the main protagonist, Allen Walker, and his connection to the Dark Order through his even more mysterious master is very interesting.
However, the plot lines for the various episodes are so far exceedingly simple: fight the demon and after a long battle involving a bit of drama about death and the soul inside the demon, etc, the hero comes out victorious, but a bit sorrowful.
The characters are what make this show mediocre thus far in the series. Every character is either 12-15 years old, or acts like they are 12-15 years old. Thus, lots of childish name-calling, antics, and cutesy-humor. Also, the characters are all a bit cookie-cutter and, except for Allen Walker, lack depth. The cold and calculating sword-wielding exorcist and the outgoing and cute girl exorcist are both extremely cookie-cutter Sunday morning cartoon characters, and even Allen Walker falls prey to the "very nice/outgoing Trigun/Rurouni Kenshin-esque main character with a tragic, mysterious past" cutout character model.
So far, we have only been introduced to two main villians, and I won't comment too much as of yet on them because we haven't been given much time to examine them, but so far they are interesting.
The animation for this anime also lends the impression of a childish early-morning cartoon show. Lots of outrageous antics and faces, the absolutely huge hand-weapon of Allen Walkers that looks entirely disproportional and very poor most of the time, and the childish evil-clown-like villians. The battle scenes are also getting a bit repetitive in their nature, with Walker and the other exorcists doing the same attack against the demons every time. There is little strategy or complexity in the various battles, and that is one of the reasons I am not enjoying this anime as much as I could be.
The soundtrack is average at best so far, and the voice actors arn't too great. Allen Walker's voice is particularly annoying (as most "outgoing heroes with tragic pasts" seem to have) but it is early in the series yet, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt by giving them an avergae score, hoping they will do more later.
I'm not going to make a value judgement at this early juncture, but expect one after a few more episodes.

| i dont really know if i like this anime or not. i just decided that it has a lot of potential and through the similarities to full metal alchemist i expect a very deep story.
the similarities to full metal alchemist can not be denied. there is the main character allen walker. he is a grey-haired boy who was cursed and can see demons with his left eye. you dont have to be a genius to see the edward elric in him, except he is fighting without his brother :-).
then there are the demons i already mentioned. they are called akuma. akuma are created when a human loses a dear person. then the human can reanimate that deceased person and give it a new body. the power for that transfer is given from the earl of the millenium, an old guy that reminds me alot of that funny clown in cowboy bebop. when that transfer is completed, the body with the deceased soul in it eats the body of the human that gave him back his life. now the akuma is living into that human disguise and is used as tool and weapon of the earl of millenium.
akuma remind me alot of homunculi. do you remember. homunculi are born when someone tires to revive a dear person through alchemy. and an akuma is born the same way.
so these akuma are trying to collect "INNOCENCE". that is the power given to the exorcists that hunt the akuma. innocence is spread all over the world and allen walkers first mission for the religious order he entered is to go to italy and get a hold of it. there are 109 pieces of innocence spread all over the world and if they are all collected the earl of millenium can be defeated. this already happened once in the past but when the earl was defeated the world became chaos. and a prophecy says that allen walker will lead this world into this chaos again.
full metal alchemist can be said to be one of the 5 best anime overall. and because of the similarities shown in d.gray-man i think i can get to like this one as well. its a lot darker than FMA but also has its funny moments. the animation is routinely done but nothing too special. i dont know how long d.g-m is gonna be so i might change my oppinion again but for now i can just say that everyone that liked FMA should watch this and shouldnt be to upset to get a full metal alchemist reloaded series.
