| Based on the popular Ps1 game, Star Ocean Ex follows the familiar storyline. With monsters to fight and a world to explore this anime follows the in-game storyline, but that's also one of its pitfalls as well. Prepared to be dazzled, this is Star Ocean EX.

| I remember that i started watching star ocean ex five years ago but never came over the fifth episode. This time i got to episode 10 and i can see where star ocean ex is leading. To the land of boredom, stupidity and unimaginativeness.
At first sight SOex might appear as very deep anime where the strong father stands in his sons way. But this will not be discussed any further and they start their stupid travel and stupid talk. why do they travel together in the beginning. the witch has absolutely no reason. and rena´s parents would never let her go on journey together with an alien man to a very dangerous place that even some soldier dont come back from. but hey let the girl have her own impressions of life. perhaps the parents knew she is traveling alongside the main character and that she would never die because this is one of the most transparent stories i have seen for a while. the climax is reached in episode 9 when they talk about friendship and ashton decides to not kill the dragons on his back. how should he gon on living with these things on his back. okay i have to say the dragons are the only likeable characters in ths anime but thats just because they hardly talk.
the animation is very good for the year 1990. but hey it was done in 2001!!!! where the hell did they live the last few years. the fighting scenes consist of solely pictures with sound. dont misunderstand. you see a picture for five seconds and hear someone shout very loud in voice you come to hate after some time. i would compare the animation to the first slayers series which was probably the model for star ocean ex. but if you saw slayers you know that the strongest point wasnt the animation by far. it was the fine humour of lina inverse that is totally missing in this one.
the op was (i forgot how it sounded one moment please) nothing special. the ed was quite okay but did not really suit the whole plot. the voice acting was probably the downer that ruined this anime. they all sound so similar. i sometimes didnt know who was even talking.
overall once you have seen star ocean ex your memory will destory itself after some time. so it is highly rewatchable but not really worth it. what annoyed me the most were the dialogues that seem to me as childish and unrealistic as the behaviour of the charactres in the whole.
STAY AWAY FROM STAR OCEAN EX!!! you can do many better things like watching the grass grow or simply looking out of the window.

| The animation is decent with regards to the actual graphics/drawings however you will notice several repeated frame sets, especially the attacks. If your looking for action then look elsewhere because the most you get is one or two moves repeated several times with a couple of odd slashes here and there. If you decide you want to give this a try due to the fact that you enjoyed the game then I think you should reconsider. It is nowhere near as good as the game, and to top it all off as many of the other reviewers have said you will be bitterly dissapointed at the open ending. If you have the anime and havn't seen it you could watch it just for the sake of it. However I don't sugguest obtaining this anime by buying a copy/borrowing etc. There are pleanty other anime series that are much more worth a try.

| Like some reviewers before this one, I played the PS1 game obsessively for the action and its item creation system. The story was something I completely ignored, however, because it was so weak. Then I ordered the manga version in Japanese and figured that the story was improved upon, but barely anything to shake the heavens. Now entering into the anime, I had some doubts, and some of those doubts were realized.
I'll say first that the animation was clear and vibrant, although some characters look like they took a dip in the Fountain of Youth for too long. Unfortunately, most of the characters were dumbed down from their game counterparts, mostly the main four. Some characters did remain similar, like Dias Flac, and some were even improved upon, like Opera Vectra. But the majority were dumbed down, which disappointed me. Claude did nothing but whine about his self-worth while using the same attack for 90% of the series, Rena was just a walking romance novel, and Ashton was reduced to comic relief when in the game, he was just a nice guy down on his luck.
By nearly the end of the series, I was pretty much forcing myself to watch until the end to see what would happen... or to discover what DOESN'T happen would be more appropriate. The number of changes and omissions they make from the game version was enough to make my skin crawl, although someone who didn't play the game might like it because they aren't dosed with the original storyline and thus are ignorant to the changes.
Feel free to give this a try, but if you stop halfway through, I won't blame you.

| Great Series! I really enjoyed it, but it leaves you totally hanging at the end. I really despise how they just left you with nothing after, and ditched plans to finish it. It may have been finished in a game however, but I wouldnt know as I havent played it yet.
I would recommend this for a fan of the genre of RPG and magic style anime, or anyone that likes a fantasy style series. If they had ended it properly or finished the story I'd say it would be a must watch.

| I really cannot understand that this anime only got a 7.3/10.0 as a its total user rating.
This anime is really great, even though the end is rather open, then I still think it was a satisfying end (Even if they did plan to create a second season), the characters are very unique and well developed, the story is also pretty good (With the exception of a few episodes which could just be considered 'fillers').
The graphics could have been better, and that is the weakest point of Star Ocean EX I guess, but overall I think it's a really good anime.

| The animation is awful. There are hardly any moving pictures. Not only do they skimp on fight scenes, they even go cheap when animating people talking. You will just see a still face and hear the words. The character designs are okay, not overly original. The story is not too in-depth, hero must save the world, yada yada yada. The characters are the one saving grace of this anime. They are all fairly likable and interesting, especially Ashton, the guy with dragons on his back. This anime is okay if you have absolutely nothing else to watch.

| Ok as we all know the game is much better. But for an anime to spawn from a video game I say this title is ok. It does have its ups and downs but every show has that. If you play the game you get more enjoyment from the anime and the ending wont have you wondering what just happened. I like this title and thats all I have to say and the people that think it sucks well your loss.

| I liked it a lot, except there is no ending.
The animation is pretty good, nice character designs and everything. I love game settings.......
Good songs.
The story, well there were quite a lot of fillers, but i didn't mind them too much. I would've given it full marks if there is an ending.
Character development and everything were great. Characters themselves were mostly kool, I didn't like Precis.
Enjoyable, but don't watch it unless you're ok them stopping at midstory, or if they make a season two. The game has an ending too.

| If your a fan of the game, you'll probably love this anime (I am and did). It takes the story and characters you already loved and gives them life. Ashton, my favorite character from the game is both adorable and absolutely hilarious in the anime. The downside of course is unlike the game you don't get to choose your characters and if you haven't played the game the ending leaves you hanging. In the end I think this anime is a testament to just how good a game Star Ocean Second Story was that you could remove the rgp elements, and any interaction, and the story and characters still keep you watching. I don't think you NEED to have played the game to enjoy this anime, but I think nostaligia probably played a large part in why my score is so high.

| This was a pretty good anime. The story revolves around the game with little differences here and there just to make it unique from its origin. Nice characters with good character development. It gets nostalgic when you see all the characters from the game and they are doing all those recognizable attacks. Good animation and sound, but I've seen better. Overall very enjoyable. I would recommend this if you enjoyed the game.

| well i have mixed feelings about this anime. the characters weren't developed very well throughout and claude was animated very awkwardly to top it off :S. as for the story, it seemed quite lacking throughout; at times it would get quite exciting but only briefly. oddly enough, by the time the end came, i REALLY wanted to see more because the plot got really good...then they ruined it with a horrible horrible ending...hmm i don't know what to say really
just wish they hadn't cancelled star ocean en (season 2)

| Star Ocean EX is based on the PS game by the name. Having played the game before, I'd say that I'm somewhat disappointed by the anime. Overall, it's still enjoyable but definitely not great or even good either.
Animation - 7/10
The animation itself is decent, but not great. The character designs in the anime is actually better than the game, but a few characters looked a few years younger.
Sound - 6/10
Overall not very impressive sound, but not terrible either.
Story - 5/10
Although I loved the game (mainly because it was an action RPG), the original story itself wasn't that good to begin with. I think the anime manages to make it somewhat worse by putting in some sub-plots that was not inline with the game.
Overall, it's an average story at best.
Character - 6/10
This isn't really a fault of the anime, but because the game itself doesn't really have that good cast of characters to begin with.
I liked how they re-design some of the characters, as they look better in the anime than the game.
Value - 6/10
I think I stopped watching this anime about 16 or so episodes into it.
Enjoyment - 6/10
I actually sort of enjoyed this anime, mainly because I've finished the game before and Ashton was a pretty funny character. I don't know if people who haven't played the game would enjoy it though.

| Maybe a good thing to play the video games before watching. Some difference with the game and take a lot of liberty at the ending, making it open for a sequel but looks like it will never be continued.
Rena is even more cliché and predictable than in the game, I wish they could have put a more interresting personnality. Claude is always using the same technique over and over.
Celine and Ashton are truly the most interresting characters in the anime. Celine's magic incantations are well made and Ashton is just plain cool in this one!

| After watching all 26 eps, I just have a bad taste in my mouth. I don't know if it's because I've played the wonderful game Star Ocean: The Second Story obsessively a few years back, or the fact that I had just come off a Scrapped Princess marathon and was expecting another cliche-busting adventure, but this show is Not Good.
Ack! Takehito Koyasu, one of the best male voice actors in the business, cast as the generic monotone mysterious swordsman?! Bad casting choice! Any two-bit hack can play the wooden Dias. Mr. Koyasu's talent is wasted by his dialogue. For a good example of his talent when given good writing, see his role as Mwu La Fraga in Gundam Seed.
And oh my, the animation is bad. Stock footage galore, streaking backgrounds and far too many pan shots and stills. Claude's damned overused sword move combines all four of these cheap copouts! Just plain bad.
Unless you're a huge fan of the game, or can get ahold of the show with little to no effort from a friend, don't bother with this one. Definitely NOT a buy when/if it's licensed.

| Most game-to-anime spinoff usually would not do well, and star ocean ex suffered the same consequences in Japan(where's the second series of Star Ocean Ex?). I totally enjoyed this anime although there are some major flaws. Note that I didn't play the game and could still enjoy this anime.

| I played the game and I did not enjoy it very much despite being an excellent well made game.
When I started the watch the anime I was surprised to see how close the anime was following the game. This is definitely a good point.
Except Claude moves-thief, I like all the characters, specialy Ashton. I didn't even get him in the game, but for me ASHTON MADE THE SHOW. For real, Ahston is too funny.
I also really like Celine and Incantation spells.
Too bad that there is no second season for the second part of the game.
This anime got nothing special, so you might not like it. But everyone has something thah he like with no special reason.
It's definitely a excellent anime for me.

| First of all: I honestly do not like reviews that gives 10's too often. 10 to me is pure perfection, the idea that it can not possibly get any better. I am sorry to digress.
Now, this anime is, as you probably know, based on the game: Star Ocean the second story. The game is one of the best games I have ever played and I also liked this anime, much because of the game probably. Its biggest flaw is the fact that it is only half done. The story covers the first disc of the game and then it just ends without further explanation. If you have played the game you will know what happens later on, but for those who has not it will be very annoying, I'm sure.

| When I started watching it I didn't know it is based on a game. I would probably liked it more if I had played it.
Anyway I would expect from an anime which is based on RPG to be much more sophisticated.

| I usually rate anime a little stricter than most and 5 is usually average. Therefore such a low rating does not mean this anime is junk or crap. It just implies that it's below average.
Animation is nothing spectacular, just the average effects and character potrayal is a pretty standard kawaii form (seen in most anime).
I found the opening theme quite pleasing and attention catching, but bgms employed within the series is plain medicore.
Due to the fact this anime was an adaptation of a PS game, plot development is pretty much limited and you can still sense the "RPG' element on the anime. Your usual hero starting out on a journy and recuiting party members that are proficient in different forms of fighting - healer, swordsman, mage etc.. you get the idea ;-)
