I really didn't expect anything out of this one - knowing that it is loosely based on a game of long ago, I kind of expected an adventure anime with no coherent story. Nevertheless, Druaga managed to somewhat keep my attention until the end... until I realized that there would be a sequel that I know I will not bother touching.

The story of Druaga is very basic and RPG-like. Our main character, Jil, a hero wannabe, gathers a group of fellow Climbers to climb the Tower of Druaga, for the quest of the blue crystal rod - said to grant any single wish to the bearer. Along the way up the tall tower, we meet a bunch of interesting, funny situations as well as more dreary encounters. We have villains, monsters, beautiful team members, dragons, knights, and a bunch more that will not disappoint the JRPG fan. I must admit, there were some action scenes that were quite colorful and enjoyable, as well as some really funny challenges along the way.

Since I knew that this anime would be very light-hearted, follow an insubstantial plot, and is based off a game, I didn't have high expectations. However, in the end, Druaga is really a fluff anime that doesn't really leave the viewer with much. After watching the first season of 12 episodes, I can tell you almost nothing about this anime other than a very simple plot summary. Character motivations to climb this dreary tower are weak, and all that one is left with is an ephemeral sensation of decent action and magic scenes. I can guarantee you that by tomorrow, I will no longer remember any of the character's name, nor their presence. All in all, Druaga is a pretty unspectacular anime that is only saved by its decent animation and homage to RPG adventure games.

Summary: Only good for a time-waster.

Anime base on games are rather nice in my opinion, this one is no exception. Specially if it is developed as an animation with great pace and nice humor. Game was published in 80tis I think 84 to be precise. It was an arcade game for Nintendo - so it is based on typical 2D dimension engine. I wasn't present on Earth at that time - so...

Well enough of background to the story. Anime is about boy named Jil (his around 16 or 17 I think) and his great quest to defeat the evil God Druaga - living in a Tower. Along his journey he forms a party with a group of climbers (people climbing Druagas Tower - with is as big as a mountain). So along him there are Kaya (a priest), Melt and Coopa (a mage and his apprentice), Ahmey (fighter). But not only they are trying - a lot more people climb plus Jils brother - famous Neeba "the Dragon Killer" with his party. all of this is based on a game type quest - so nice to all familiar with RPG games. But thats not all, there is lot more.

No to the review if you allow... This anime is short only 12 episodes but nice in the end. Because of the number of episodes the pace is nice, the action is well done, there is no over waiting and monotony.
The animation is on good level, the movement of the camera, the way it is pointed at the characters is nice. Plus lines and colors as well as reflections in the water are vital advantages. There are minor mistakes but nothing other anime are better in.
Sound is well dosed. It makes a good vibration, it was also well placed if you are able to play it in a good environment. Music is anime style. OPEN and END songs aren't miracles in their kind. It is a good peace of work.
If you asc me about the story - it is one good compilation - but nothing not present in other titles. Quest is a typical 'go and kill the boss, take the treasure live happy rest of your life' but the reason I given 8/10 for story is the ending. It was a surprise for me and I think one of better ways of end, yet not end to make a continue. Plus I like when the author is not afraid of killing his heroes.
Characters are a little different story - it is one of the hell good peace of creation of personality. Each one is a separate and individual mind stricted to his desires and goal but able to develop a powerfull relationship with other.
In this material part Jil is rather a looser in the beginning - but in the end I was able to sense a diffraction in him, so it was a power of the main hero.
I adore Kaya - specially for her role in the end 12th episode. It was not hard to see that she is a critical puzzle - but I was shocked even knowing that.
Other are background but, well not counting Neeba, still there are no characters that I dislike or dull. They make a perfect anime.
Value of this series is good and high. It is quick, with humor and perfect timing of events as well as with the fabulous ending. If I was to find disadvantages it will be the lots of 'left unknown to the viewer' in the end as well as a group of thing I would like to be revealed before some critical episodes, like death of Jil's and Neeba's father, and more.
I enjoyed watching this show a lot - it was a well done in animation, well done with sound , a typical but not boring story and the plus of this series are characters - normal humans with goals and imperfections but heroes in the end. Definitely worth watching.

(Episode 9 of 13)

Druaga no to is a fantasy anime based o a 80' popular videogame, similar to a basic Zelda. Let's review it:

Animtaion: 7/10. Well, the animation is well done and correct, but it is no really especial.

Sound: 8/10. Liked the OP alot, but the sountrack is average at best.

Story: 6/10. Druaga no to tell us the story of a tower of many levels with dungeons and treasures, and a group of hunters who wants to reach the upper level to fight the Demon King Druaga. Not so a great history I think...

Enjoyment: 8/10. ... still I'm surprinsingly enjoying it. I found a couple of episodes really hillarious, and although the story is not so well, it is a pleasant anime.

Value: 7/10. Druaga no to it's in not the great anime of all times, but it has its points. If you are looking for a really good anime look elsewhere, but if you only want to have a good time, this anime is worth to watch.

Sorry for my english :P
