Oh! Edo Rocket - The story of a young fireworks enthusiast boy with great dreams and a beautiful girl to chase after. Mix in some anachronistic references, chaos ensues. Sadly, chaos is all it is.
I have to say, I really tried my best to watch this. In the beginning, I was moved by the OP, and found the first few episodes to be different than the usual anime molds. However, over time, the comedy remained unchanged, the plot line felt predictable, and there was no exciting progression within sight. While this anime is far from a complete disaster, there are just so many better things out there to watch.
If a great anime only needed to be different, Oh! Edo Rocket would be successful. Unlike Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei, which carried a dark sense of comedy within its unique shell, Oh! Edo Rocket is a simple anime aimed for the younger audience. Plagued by a cast of one-dimensional characters, deep down Oh! Edo Rocket is nothing more than an unsophisticated story about a young boy fighting opposition to reach his dreams.
Story/plot: While I understand how anachronistic references may be a cause for humor in this Edo-based anime, Oh! ER relies too much on these gags to carry its story along. Is it really that interesting to have transforming alien beauties, transforming warriors with names like Cpt Belly Button, or residents who can transform a villager into a cat/bird? Is it that interesting to have grotesquely drawn characters do odd things? Is it that fun to see buckets of waste explode like fireworks and then chasing away the towns people? If so, then just ignore my warning to stay away from this. Also, while I admire the tenacity of all the residents to follow their dreams, the fact that Seikichi gets his inspirations in the most unintellectual way just irks me. He is essentially given all the answers to developing his firework-turned-rocket, and this just does not do for me.
Characters: As varied as the number of different types of stationery supplies, and just about as interesting, too.
Good: They succeeded in emitting the passions of Seikichi in getting Sora to the moon. As this was this was only the reason I could keep watching, I admit they did a good job here. However, aside from their passion, the characters have nothing going for them. With no other purpose than to serve a supporting role and to fill up space, the side characters just take too much time away from this anime. While I'm sure there will be more meaningful interactions between Sora x Seikichi in the future, I'm not patient enough to wait to see the obvious happen.
Sorry, Oh! Edo Rocket, I wish I had seen the ending and find out whether Sora goes or stays, but due to the lack of a strong driving force in this series, I really don't care anymore.

| I've seen up to ep 17, and I might edit this review later on.
For an anime fan myself who has been bored to death by the mediocre animes recycling the same old plots again and again, Oh Edo Rocket makes for a refreshing change - so I have to give it a 10/10. :)
The anime is basically about firework maker (Tamaya) who takes on a girl's order to make firework that can reach the moon. The trick besides the sheer difficulty is the fact that in this time of Edo, any form of extravagance is prohibited, that includes making firework, entertaining and most forms of technology. Tamaya runs the risk of being arrested over his work.
The anime has a large cast of characters who all live in the same poor area that seems to breed all kinds of "extravagance". The anime at first starts out to be silly, but as it advances, it reveals the secrets held by various characters, the hardship they have to overcome and the unity and relationship between the characters.
What I like about the anime is everything. Its plot is vastly different from the typically hero-type plot line. In "Edo Rocket", Tamaya is simply a firework maker who defies the law. He can't fight, but is instead always protected.
The contrast in animation between the background and the characters is catching. This does not make anything less hard to stomach, but instead makes the characters sharper and more real, since they were drawn in the modern version. In occasion, you'll find animation that shouldn't appear in the Edo era appears, such as helicopters. You'll also find game-boy version anime in a scene of one episode, characters uttering the wrong script and referring to the studio. All these make the anime very different and a crazy jumbo from others.
It's absolutely hilarious and funny to watch, yet at the same time, you fear for Tamaya's safety when the police digs for evidence against him, and you root for him as he tests his rockets.
This anime is adapted from a play. I don't know whether the playwright had any message specifically embedded in the comedy when he/she wrote the play, but regardless, Oh Edo Rocket is one heck of a gem.
Definitely worth watching, especially if you're tired of the crap that pervades mainstream anime so much.

| Very unusual anime. Very entertaining. Good change of pace from the usual wet-dream high-school romance anime or animes designed just to sell toys. Feels like a cross between Naruto + Samurai Champloo and Hiraku no Go + Yakitate Japan. Very polished visuals and sound. All the backgrounds are in Sumi-E style (like the video game Okami). Soundtrack is much like Samurai Champloo. The story isn't that predictable, but the characters are pretty one dimensional (target audience is kids). Lots of puns and other parody bits. I love how TVs, helicopters, notebook computers, steampunk and anime production references make it into the Edo-period backdrop.
