| Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie is a 100 minute action anime movie released in 1994. It is the first animated movie adaptation of the Street Fighter franchise, featuring characters from the Street Fighter II fighting games. The reason for its huge success at the time is visible throughout the movie, and has not failed to impress me for a single moment.
Released in 1994 as an action movie, Street Fighter II features some of the most impressive graphics and animation I have ever seen in an anime to date. Over a decade on, the character designs in the movie do not feel dated at all. Every scene in the movie is animated to the highest quality, which, when combined with the detailed designs, provide the best fight scenes. In addition to quality, Street Fighter II also features variety. Each fighting sequence is totally different, and animated in such a way that it is always exciting to watch. There are also a number of extremely cheesy scenes in Street Fighter II, which adds a pleasant moment of humour.
There are a number of different versions of Street Fighter II, some of which are heavily censored. Although I only watched the uncut UK Studio Manga release, I believe that censorship of any kind would greatly damage the flow and excitement of the movie. An action movie without detailed graphical unforgiving fight scenes would be comparable to a harem anime featuring only two characters, or a budget hentai release.
The UK Studio Manga release of Street Figther II only contained the English dub of the movie. As a result, I am unable to comment on the original Japanese dub. However, the English voice acting, although bland at times, is not bad in any way, since the emotionless dialogue fits in perfectly with the characters, making numerous action sequences only more enjoyable. The soundtrack of the movie is excellent. Featuring a mixture of Japanese and English songs complementing the action sequences, Street Fighter II is exciting to listen to.
As an action movie, Street Fighter II features a surprisingly well developed storyline. Although viewers who have never touched anything before in the Street Fighter franchise might not be aware of the events which lead up to the movie, it is still very easy to follow and interesting to watch. Granted, most of the movie consists of fighting sequences, leaving very little room for storytelling. But, a movie does not need to provide answers if there are no questions asked. Street Fighter II features a linear storyline, making it believable and easy to follow, without having to compromise on the lengthy action scenes.
As with the storyline, viewers with no prior experience in the Street Fighter franchise might not know most, if not all the characters. Furthermore, given the time spent fighting and developing the storyline, Street Fighter II ignores character development altogether. This might cause disappointment to new viewers looking for highly detailed characters, but for those who have followed the Street Fighter franchise, character development would not be an issue in any way.
Nevertheless, it is not all bad news for new viewers, since they will be awed by the unique fighting styles each character has. Street Fighter II features a highly impressive cast of characters, each with a totally different and well developed fighting style. Followers of Street Fighter would already be aware of these styles, but new viewers will no doubt be surprised by the various moves these characters pull off in different situations.
The major gripe in regards to characters would be the fact that most characters only make one single insignificant appearance, and do not contribute to the overall storyline in any way.
Street Fighter II is a top quality fighting anime movie for both new viewers and people familiar with the franchise. Given the high quality of animation, lengthy fighting scenes, exciting soundtrack, and fascinating characters, Street Fight II is an excellent watch for anyone looking for a good action anime. But, should you decide to watch this movie, make sure you get an uncensored and uncut version, otherwise you will be in for a disappointment.

| I came across this completely by chance (came with the Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, which was very nice) and considering that I thought this was going to suck badly, it was pretty good. In fact, even not considering that, it was pretty good.

| Not bad, but could‘ve been somewhat better. Usually it doesn't exceed with other type of movies, but it does have some passable areas on the storyline for a videogame type of anime. I can really see that it was a little better on the animation and music; compared with the V series. The story felt too much on being too attentive from the many other characters, and should’ve had some more good objective with Ryu. It did fine, until I saw the ending of it; which was pretty much what I thought it was going for seeing as it didn’t really show too much for whole general plot in the long run.

| This one is a classic! THinking it was made in 1993, really make it shine! If you want to watch 1 movie based on a fighting game, make sure it's this one! (and not SF-Alpha)
Animation was good for it's age, and actually better then SF ALpha.
Great sound, nice music and effects.
Story was quite good. In facts, i doubt they could've made it any better. Everycharacter had a motive, a reason for doing the stuff they were doing, and that's not very common in a movie like this.
Overall, i REALLY enjoyed this movie. Having seen SF-Alpha beforehand, i was not expecting much from this, but it surprised me in best way possible! Great movie!

| I'm a fan of Street Fighter 2 just as much as any other... I grew up in the arcades playing it, watching the crowds gather in front of me and behind me concerning the game, and learning more about the social aspects that video games can have on you. That said... onto this movie...
Even though I've been a tremendous SF2 fan, I will have to dismiss this as a great movie. The animation and fight scenes were great, but this movie makes the same mistakes that other video game-to-anime titles make... the biggest of them being "throwing every single character into the title, regardless of their place in the story." Characters like Zangief, Blanka, E. Honda, Dhalsim, Dee Jay, Fei Long, and T. Hawk were randomly thrown in having no significant impact whatsoever on the story.
Just as "SF Alpha," Ryu plays the prominent role in the story, but I figured it to be a little more involved with his rivalry with Sagat rather than some "terrorism plot" against M. Bison. It sounded so tremendously farfetched that a man of extraordinary power is just "looking for the greatest street fighters in the world in order to dominate it"... So you're telling me that this Ryu-guy, who likes to walk instead of catching a taxi, is the fighter that M. Bison is looking to center his plans around? It sounds well and good on paper... the story I mean... but after you throw every single game character in the mix (from Super SF2... sadly no Gouki), the story falls flat on its face and but still ranks a little higher than "Tekken" and "Night Warriors."

| I've watched just about all the street fighter anime, and THIS, I have to say, is the definitive one, the big daddy of them all.
The animation, for starters, is the best one of the lot by far. Admittedly, street fighter 2v series did have better action scenes *at times*, because the production techniques used such as inverting the colours every now and again, made the fighting scenes make so much more dynamic. What made the action sequences for this movie better is the lack of repeating scenes, which is a big plus in comparison to 2v.
The music works most of the time, but the does get a little distracting when it becomes too heavy - I'm not a big fan of heavy music :P The english voices are once again a let down, but not as bad as 2v.
The story... well, what can I say, it's the original story of street fighters, and is pretty much standard issue for an action anime, with the usual mad insane villain out to take over the world. The characters too, are consistent with the video games.
I like this anime, especially that fantastic fight between Chun Li and Vega which has gotta be the highlight of the anime, but it has to be said that, unless you are a fan of the video game or a fan of fighting anime, you might not "get" this. But as far as beat-em-up game converted into anime, this is probably as good as it'll get... it even features many of the characters special moves from the game!

| I'm an avid fan of the Street Fighter series, and as an anime for the game, it doesn't get better than this.
That said, the movie looks great for when it was made, though tiny bit dated now. The story is pretty pointless. The game was never meant to have a deep story, and it's only worth being there just to keep the show from being a brainless brawl fest.
A few of the characters are cool (Ryu, Bison, Vega, Chun-Li, Blanka) but a couple are just plain stupid. (Fei-Long, Honda, Balrog) but I guess that's a matter of opinion.
The action sequences are what you'd expect from a Street Fighter based anime, well done, and chalk full of each characters respective special techniques.
The best part of this movie is the soundtrack, which was full of hard hitting heavy metal/techno. Each song used seemed to fit each part of the movie it was used in, especially the bits by "KMFDM" and the ending theme by "KoRn". They probably spent more licensing the music for this than they did animating it.
This is an anime that would be best enjoyed by fans of the game series, other than that, there's definately better action animes out there.

| I changed my original review because I just watched the movie again and have a fresher opinion on the matter, while for the original review I hadn't watched the movie for years.
Well, the movie is pretty great. Many people consider it as the best beat'em-up game-to-movie adaptation (compared to Tekken for example).
It's story is not the best you'd expect out of a anime movie but it's still excellent if you consider the amount of characters (read further for who appears) included and their individual stories/backgrounds that had to be stuffed in a 90 minute movie.
Of course there is plenty of action to satisfy all Street Fighter fans (this is undoubtedly the best Streed Fighter anime around) and many characters from (where else?) the game appear merely tfight another character or to show off a move, including Hadoken, Shoryuken, Sonic Boom, Chun-Li's kicks and many others.
To sum it up, movie is nice and fun to watch, but don't expect an overly complicated plot or anything.
I mean, it's a beat'em-up game adaptation for chrissakes! It's all about the fights!
Highly Recommended.

| This was the FIRST anime I had ever seen. Way back in '94 living in a place where no one even knows what Anime is, this opened up a new world for me. I got a hold of this because even uptil now I'm a HUGE fan of Street Fighter. If you love SF games then you cant miss this. Granted the plot isnt great but it is VERY true to the game and covers the major signature moves of many characters not to mention tonnes of cameo appearances throughout.
The animation for it's time is top notch with lightening fast actions scenes. The dubbed version was also good with it's Hard Rock music. And being a rock fan too I loved the soundtrack and fitted well with the movie. Truly one of a kind

| If you're a fan of the Street Fighter games, this movie is your best chance of actually enjoying an anime based on it. While the storyline is sort of weak, the characters are very true to what you would expect based on the games.
The action scenes are very fun to watch. The version I saw was uncensored (and had a funny little, "Not for kids," sticker on the side of it), and might have been a bit too gory for some audiences. The animation was decent and the character art varied in detail throughout the movie. My friend claimed that two different artists worked on this movie, and that he could tell whether the Ryu on screen was drawn by one artist or the other. =_=;
Anyway, this is a fun anime to watch, and certainly isn't a waste of time. Worth a rental at the least.

| Would it be of any surprise if i told you that this anime is the first anime i actually rate perfect? And to tell you the truth, i never rate ANY anime perfect unless they really deserve.
I explain in full detail on MORE INFORMATION.
Anyway, the movie is amazing. Considering the fight between Vega and Chun Li to be the greatest. At first, i thought that part was TOO overrated, until i actually watched it and thought, hey, maybe this is not the only good part, maybe there may be more, but unfortunately, the last battle didnt top it, and this anime movie made its mark as a classic. Well, street fighter was a classic at birth, so is it of any surprise to why this movie had so much ariplay at its time?
I thought the finale fight was going to be the one where Ken and Ryu dont take care of Bison as i heard from many other people, but guess what, that is not true, and i couldnt wish for an even better ending. Most of the important characters are shown here and there (including Akuma) and to everyones laughter and probably MIsc taste, there is a truck witht eh Capcom logo on it.
The downside? characters like Sagat, Cammy and Dhalsim dont get their RETURN, like you only see them ONCE in action but are just there for good balacnce and for the well of the movie, the thing is, we would had wished for lots more.
Worse comes to good, and the ending is amazing.
Keep an eye of this movie, even if youre not a fan of the series (theres no excuse on "I never heard of these series before" you could only say that if you have been living in a cage)

| If you just had to endure Tekken, this will help you out of your fear. It's a nice anime, and a pretty good one for it's genre. Enough to keep the SF fans excited and the rest entertained.
Most importantly, anime like this only have one expectation to live up to: Fight Scenes. And SFII has plenty of them, making it a succes in its genre.

| A medicore attempt at making a SF II anime.
Though still better than the American live action movie (not hard to be better than that trash), this movie still leaves a lot to be desired.
I didn't think this movie was bad, but certainly not great. Ryu and Vega were very cool, the only consistanly cool characters in the movie.
The worst part was Bison's "Psyco Power" that made him practically invincible. Making me wonder how he was ever defeated at the end...

| The soundtrack consists of metal/industrial bands from the mid 90s, most of it is pretty popular stuff, which can be a good thing or a bad thing, in my case its a good thing, and i liked most of the songs and what they added to the action. I've seen popular rock/punk songs used as soundtracks for DBZ movies and it just didn't work... but maybe that's cus DBZ movies gnerally suck. But this works pretty good.
Cammy - Kinda disappointing, even for one of the "new" characters she doesn't see much action. At one point in the film Bison told Sagat to go take out Cammy but maybe they removed that in the final cut because the rest of the movie doesn't feature Sagat at all.
DeeJay - Eh, the pimp daddy beats up some common thugs but at least he looks good doin it, not much expected from a character that has really nothing to do with the storyline.
T-Hawk - He gets beat by Ken from one Shouryuken (sp). At least Fei Long had a good fight.
Fei Long - Fei Long vs. Ryu is pretty good action
Blanka & Zangief - We see some moves from the game, not a very good fight, has nothing to do with the plot, but they fit it in anyway.
E. Honda - Kicks ass as comic relief.
Dhalsim - he does some psionic shit that isn't really true to the game. Then again neither is anything Bison does in the movie, but he still kicks ass now doesn't he.
Chun Li Vs. Vega - This fight is awesome , the highlights are when Chun Li throws the couch at Vega, and when she uses her turbo kicks. The KMFDM song is fitting. The one odd thing -- what kind of apartment has such a high ceiling that Vega and Chun Li can jump around all over the place?
Guile - He's kinda annoying if you ask me. Everything about Guile pisses me off for some reason.
Ken - Doesn't kick as much ass as Ryu but he's still kewl.
Ryu - He beats the crap out of everyone, no surprise there.
Balrog - Could they make him any BLACKER?
Sagat - We see him in the flashback of Ryu owning him. It's at the very beginning of the movie.
Bison - "Psycho Powers"? Well, sounds kinda lame but Bison still is kewl despite most of the stuff he's fighting with isn't in the game. We see the slide move, but not the Bison torpedo, wtf??? That's like his trademark move. Plus being the lame villain of a dubbed anime you have to expect him to have some pretty corny lines. All in all he's ok.

| The Movie is far superior to the crappy Street Fighter 2V series which drags out a fight and a summoning of the Ha-do-ken for about three episodes while you're pulling your hair and screaming..... Anyway, It's the perfect introduction to the characters of the game. They're all there, more or less, and they feel similar to those of the game. At least more than the hoodlum that Ryu appear to be in the beginning of Street Fighter 2V..
However, if your not to fond of Street Fighter 2, then you might not enjoy it as much. That's because the movie is driven mostly by the fact that you get to see your favourite characters move about in an anime. Still, the fight-sequences are decent, so those might entertain..

| Come on, it's based of Street Fighter. Like you need to know anymore. I can't think of any decent anime based on a fighting game. You know who all the characters are and what roles they'll be playing. You know you'll see all these characters doing they're special moves you've grown to love. You know the story is going to be crap, since it was made simply so fans could watch they're favorite characters fight it out on TV (or in a movie as is the case for this movie).
After all that, I can say I enjoyed the fights, but that's pretty much the only reason to watch the show, and that's simply not enough.

| It's an average anime for those who aren't very into the original StreetFighter II game, but for the real SFII fans I think it's a must see. The most interesting fights to me were Chun Li vs Vega, Ryu vs Fei Long and Blanka vs Zangief.
Almost all characters have a role in this movie, but luckily it's not done the way the real movie with JC van Damme went. It's nice to see characters like Dhalsim for a few secs without having him being a main character of the anime.

| If you're totally in to the game this anime will suit you just fine. You'll find it very cool during the fights between especially sagat and ryu, chun li and vega. I think this is personally better than the series. And because I'm an old fan of the game I thought this was pretty interresting THE FIRST TIME I saw it. But the second time I saw it it wasn't so special.

| This is the only street fighter anime I have seen so far. It was probably the worst I will probably see too. OrO -_- The only thing that was pretty cool was the fight with Vega ryu fights. Everything else was pretty crappy though besides that. The story is your normal terrorist story. I didn't enjoy this anime much at all, as well as I wouldn't value it a lot either. The only cool characters were Ryu, Vega, Bison, and Guile. Not really nice songs in the movie either, just wierd sounds and pretty crappy voice acting.

| Like the other reviews, if you are a true fan of the video game, you'll like the movie. However, this anime is really lacking in pretty much every aspect that is anime. I've only seen the dubbed, and for some reason, the voices don't really fit with the characters they play. The movie has pretty much EVERY character, which can be a high and low point depending on your view. It really has some nice action sequences (esp Chun-Li vs Vega) but overall, it's not really a very good anime film.
